I *want* to 5/5 this place as it was my introduction to small box, San Diego CrossFit. It use to be awesome. Now - The gym is always in new multiple ownership hands and has been a revolving door for owners since ~2021. Unfortunately this has caused a lot of growing pains. You can see they're trying but just keep missing the marks. The gym is typically unclean. Notifications - They will not cover all grounds... i.e. a text (that people have opted out on for a cancelled class), an instagram story post - when not everyone is on social media....etc. Hours - continuously changing & dwindling - 5am/9am/noon/430pm/530pm/sometimes a 630 could be olympic lifting, could be open gym, could not be a class time... depends on the season and day of the week, for ~$160/month Coaches - Most are friendly & enthusiastic with a knowledgable drive to help. Although once you've been around the gym long enough, most stop coaching you. They become tunnel focused on a few individuals in class. Have had owners & other coaches cop passive aggressive attitudes & comments for no reason. Owners & coaches have been known to discuss business or speak illy of drop-ins, members, previous members, or other owners during business hours & directly in front of the individual as if they are not present. Administrative owners will write notes & keep unprofessional tabs on clients via their Wodify (software program) account to include information about the client's personal life & the way that admin owner personally feels about that client. Owners watch cameras to a neurotic point & if you forget to check into a class...they'll go back, watch the camera tapes & reading the boards (both - because sometimes you might just be doing open gym & not have your name on the board) & then check you into the class(es) days/ a week later. read more

I discovered Crossfit Kivnon a little over 2 years ago. I had moved back to San Diego from Santa Barbara, and wanted to find a Crossfit gym. After dropping into a few other gyms, my first day at Kivnon was nothing but a welcoming experience. The class times range from 5am to 7pm, also offering extra classes such as Olympic Lifting, Mobility, and Gymnastics for members! Here are a few things that make Crossfit Kivnon my second home with my second family: 1. The Coaches- all at different levels of Crossfit. All coaches are welcoming, and help new members and seasoned members perfect their craft. The best part about the coaching staff at Kivnon is everyone comes from all walks of life, and each of them motivate each individual to become BETTER. 2. The Members- I remember my first class. During the start of class, I was introduced to the entire class, and had hello's flying at me left and right. I didn't feel intimidated, and that's a huge barrier as to why some people are afraid to start Crossfit. You won't be afraid here. Some of the members are now my best friends, and I couldn't imagine my life without them. 3. Crossfit Kids Classes- Parents: If your children want to work out too, Kivnon is the place to be! There are classes specifically for kids, and all of them look to always have tons of fun. 4. Great Social Atmosphere- Not only do we have the ability to become better athletes, Kivnon members are family. The Box hosts holiday parties, events within the community, (beach WOD's, attending concerts together, Spartan/Tough Mudder Races). All of the members take care of each other, as well as have fun together. 5. FREE CLASSES- Yes, FREE! Every Saturday at 9am, Kivnon gives the public the opportunity to come and work out for free. I've been a member for three months now. This place is amazing. The gym is always clean, the coaches are very knowledgeable and eager to assist with perfecting the mechanics of CrossFit training. When I first started CrossFit my mechanics needed serious help. However, I was unable to attend the Saturday classes specifically designed for beginners. One of the owners noticed me struggling and provided me with one-on-one coaching at a time that was more convenient for me. My initial plan was to join Kivnon for a limited time as I moved to La Mesa temporarily to help care for a relative. I have since moved back to La Jolla and now commute regularly to train at Kivnon. After four years of crossfitting at a CF affiliate I was forced to make a tough decision and look for an affiliate closer to home. Unsure of what to expect, I searched for affiliates near my home. I found several, but was a bit skeptical. I stopped in at a couple of boxes before stopping by CrossFit Kivnon. I met a couple of the coaches/owners at Kivnon and was offered a free one week trial. I did some research and found that the coaches were certified in CF Level 1, CF football, CF mobility and CF kids. One of the coaches is also a Doctor of Chiropractic. Now, were the coaches able to back up their certifications? Absolutely. Each coach I've interacted with seems to care about their client and in achieving your goals. They pay attention to the fundamentals of CF and correct your form when needed. They keep you pumped and encourage you to push yourself, but at the same they're not afraid to tell you to scale down your weight or modify your workout. I find it very important, when looking for a box, to make sure the CF affiliate has great coaches. I once dropped in on a box where they would give you the WOD and simply walk away. Another thing I noticed was the camaraderie between the members and the coaches. You'll find yourself working out with a group who will also encourage you and cheer you on during the workout. Everyone is very friendly and very supportive. Kivnon has a pretty good layout; I'd say about 2500 sq. ft. and soon to almost double in size. They have plenty of equipment to go around. Class size and program works great for me. They have an early morning class which works out great if I have to work late and also several classes in the evening for after work. Some people say CrossFit is too expensive compared to $20 or $30 per month at your local 24 Hour Fitness/LA Fitness gym. Think about this. How much do you pay for a personal trainer? I've heard of people paying anywhere from $240 to $500 for 8-12 sessions per month. You'll pay less than half of $240 doing Crossfit and it's exactly like having a personal trainer. The coaches are always there encouraging you, pushing you and watching your form the entire time. And you're not limited to the amount of sessions per month. This week will complete my month at CrossFit Kivnon and I can say I'm glad I decided to join the CF Kivnon family. read more

The week free pass is something I couldn't pass up and find excuses not to give this place a try. The instructors are very helpful and this place seems like a big family. It isn't all serious, they joke and they constantly lift one another up. Being that I'm not in shape, I was nervous I couldn't keep up but this is something u do at your own speed and own weight with no pressure to keep up with folks who have been doing this for years. Also I can bring my kids for free, which is a huge plus from the kid membership I would pay at a gym where they would scream and cry if they were locked in a strange room not being able to see me. When I joined Crossfit Kivnon, I got a well structured work out regiment with excellent coaching and support straight from the owners themselves. How often do the owners of Chuze and 24 hour fitness work out along with you? I have never felt one ounce of judgment at this place. I can only say good things about this box! I first found out about Kivnon the Summer of last year (2013), and I am so glad that I did! Prior to Kivnon, I worked out at another box downtown, but it was just too far, and too hard on my wallet after a while. I had recently moved to La Mesa, and so the stars aligned just right, and I joined Kivnon right away, when they first opened. The coaches are so encouraging and very motivating. They are always pushing me to challenge myself and work diligently along side me to perfect my form. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without them! For people who are new to CrossFit, the coaches are very attentive and they encourage new members to establish good form and scale down the work outs to avoid injury. I really respect that most about our coaches, that they prefer form and safety over anything else! This box is great with beginners so don't be timid! I've been a member here for over two years now and I love it now even more than I did at the beginning. This is an establishment run a group of talented, affable, and dedicated athletes. There are no fake tough guys or teachers making you feel stupid, every coach here cares deeply about the safety of their students and will push them to be a better version of themselves. When I began my training here I was a skinny, socially awkward person. They have turned me into a more muscular, more confident version of myself! Dropped in for a free week trial and overall a pretty decent gym. Pros: Upon stepping into the gym, one of the owners, who was coaching that day, gave me a quick tour of the place which I appreciated. The people were nice and encouraging. The facility itself has a nice layout, with a shower, cubbies, a fridge, etc. The programming was pretty good too; I enjoyed their Hero WOD Wednesday's. As for Cons: only 1 out of the 3 coaches I interacted with asked if I had previous CrossFit experience (I did), so they tended to assume I didn't and overexplained things which was a tad annoying. They also didn't have enough GHD's during one WOD and it was a little chaotic during the workout. The location is in an industrialized area and there are a lot of moving trucks so you have to be careful when driving into and out of the gym. Based on my experience, I would say it's not an amazing gym but not a bad gym, overall decent. read more

I started CrossFit about two years ago and have worked out at three different CrossFit gyms (two in the San Diego area). CrossFit Kivnon is by far the best of them. Not only is it the best deal in town, but the coaches are extremely down-to-earth, knowledgable, and have the ability to make anyone (no matter what their fitness level) feel comfortable. The facility is spacious and the equipment is clean and well taken care of... And there's always enough for the growing class sizes, which is great. The programming is great and accommodates members of all levels. I personally am stronger now than I ever have been; I had even been at another gym for almost a year and a half and have made the most progress at Kivnon. The people who workout there are so genuine and welcoming; there's never any judgment, just encouragement. Let me start off by saying that I never thought I'd be a fan of crossfit; nor be a paying member. I was the kind of guy that used to only work out his upper body at 24 hour fitness. Well, after a night of drinking, a friend of mine and I decided we were going to give it a try and go to one of Crossfit Kivnon's free classes. Fast-forward a year and a half, and I'm a "dedicated" participant in the 5:30am class. No matter how long you do this, the workouts never cease to kick your butt and be so varied at the same time. The coaches know exactly what they're doing and provide excellent wod reviews and feedback during the workout. I feel honored to be a part of this group of athletes. The camaraderie and energy in the morning class is what keeps me going. The beach wods are awesome, too. You won't know what it's like until you try it. My advice?
