What could be finer than a weekend in the country with your best gal ever? So, that's what we did. We load up the truck, stuffed some things in a bag or two and off we went to the Blisswood Ranch. Which was great, the folks their couldn't of treated us better. They respected our privacy. When my truck tire went flat, they were most helpful. All-n-all a 5 star + experience. But, this is not a tell about the Blisswood (which was great, except for being bitten by a kangaroo - another story). This is a story of The Cat Springs Social Club, also known as The Crossroad Tavern. They had a problem coming up with only one name, though it didn't warrant two names. The Cat Springs Social Club is an icehouse by the true definition of the word. Now, I know that some of you are from out of state (probably California - and let me say WELCOME) and may not know what an icehouse is. An icehouse is like a run-down corner store with a few tables, a bar, possibly a pool table. They were pretty prevalent in Texas when I was growing up. In my early days, the one I frequented was The Wrinkle Belly Lounge in San Antonio. Again, another story. Have a bottle of rum with us and no Coke, I decided to stop and get a bottle or two. Mistake one. Now being raised in Texas and having what some people consider long hair, I know better. Life long problem, I never follow my better sense. That's mistake two. Hearing the screen door close behind me, I pass a table with a woman in her late 60's sifting a beer through what teeth she had left. I headed to the cooler to get my cokes when I hear her long neck hit the table and say "What, you come all the way out hear to git' your haircut". This was something I experienced on several occasions in the 70's, but this is 2010. I headed to the bar to pay for my cokes, when she made another commit on my hair. I was not sure what those words were, I was busy listening for chairs scooting across the floor, footsteps heading my directions, and that oh-so familiar sound out a shotgun pump. At this point Catherine decides to suggest the cokes in the glass bottle, which is a much better choice for a weapon than the plastic bottles, I had got. But, it 12 was against 2 and the most I could do is piss them off. I paid, turned and we went straight to the door. How good I felt when I heard that screen door hit the jamb behind us. We jumped in the truck and away we went, never to return. I was proud of myself for not saying something stupid to the woman, since she was probably someones mother. I know that those local yokels would be obligated to defend her honor. This only goes to prove; Austin is a 100 square miles, surrounded by reality. Be careful whenever leaving Austin. I give The Cat Springs Social Club 5 stars for redneckness. But, I'm judging them on friendliness, which I feel they failed miserably.

Classic old Texas gas station turned ice house.
