I was on Fulton street and walked into this store that I accidentally found while in the area. I walked in requesting a copy of my keys and the owner asked if I wanted him to make only a copy of my keys and why not the FOB, too? I told him that he couldn't do that and that only my building could. The owner reassured me that he had all the equipment in that store and he would be able to CLONE my FOB so I'd have an extra set of keys and a FOB just in case I lost my original ones. He was right! I live in Brooklyn and when I got home even the FOB worked. This place gave me great customer service and really came through. They certainly know what they are doing. I've probably come in nearly 10 times since moving to Bed Stuy less than a year ago and they've been lifesavers. From helping me select the correct sizes of screws for furniture building (and letting me exchange incorrect sizes on the house), to recommending plaster and sealants to showing me how to use wasp spray, the employees here really care about their customers and are just great overall. They have a large selection of screws and nails, different grains of sandpaper, buckets of plaster and lots of various home improvement tools. I look forward to my next home project and visit to Royal Hardware!

It's great that the "oldtimers" have a place, close by, to buy lightbulbs, flashlights, smoke/ carbon monoxide detectors/locks/ drill bits, (they are well stocked), small stuff ... And staff can be "helpful" for the most part... But they don't seem to "get" the "neighborhood". I worry about the cost/prices. You either get rude employees or employees that speak zero English and only Chinese or Mandarin. This is a neighborhood mom and pop $.99 store that is still fairly new and people in Howard Beach try to always support mom and pop establishments. Last week 2 women from the neighborhood came in to go shopping. a Chinese lady working there looked at one of the women who she recognized and said "Wow your face got so fat what happened, lol" Well what had happened was the woman has Cancer and her body is swollen from the medication. When they were kind enough to tell the Chinese lady what was wrong with her and why she had gained weight, her reply was "oh well, the older you get the harder that weight will be to lose" Are you kidding me! I went in looking for toothpaste the guy behind the counter had no clue what I was saying and the other guy just out loud answered no!, I'm assuming meaning no we don't have I was looking for. When I asked him where the items were that were similar he pointed down some aisle and walked away like he really couldn't be bothered. Which is greatly helpful for those that frequented Cedarhurst Paper across the street (the party-place that closed). I ALWAYS find some really pretty or unusual holiday items here too. Much better than the dollar store that used to be just off of 157th and Crossbay. I have also found some unusual things here at a really good deal - like these stacking containers I use for jewelry making. They were almost double the price on Amazon. That says something to me! From brooms to laundry baskets, from video game cables to tools, from party supplies to pet toys and beds, from ornaments to rugs, etc. They offer a bit of everything. Located on 14th between First & Second Avenues it was east to find. Amir, the owner was welcoming and made copies of my two keys. Here they specialize in Medeco keys which often cannot be copied in most other places including Home Depot. Amir is a man who speaks many languages (Hebrew, Korean, Persian, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, Marathi) to name a few as he has traveled around the world. A fascinating man who is charming and professional. $8 for two keys was reasonable and he put them in a key ring for me and gave me another ring free. Toda Amir. Highly recommended.

When she went to the store, there were two men, and the older one didn't hesitate to come over and fix the situation. It only took 20 minutes, and she didn't feel that it was expensive. A third time we got two different keys made. They specialize in Medeco keys which often cannot be properly copied. Although they warned us it might not work, our Medeco key turned out fine, and we didn't need to return.

So a different guy made new keys. Took them home. They don't work either. That was a couple months ago (I've been away). Today I brought them back, along with two different keys for the same lock, and asked if they could just check them against them in the machine, try cleaning them up. Not new keys, just try cleaning up the ones they already made. Lots more attitude, not to mention misinformation. I walked a few blocks up to Mega, got keys cut that work with no attitude (well, a friendly one.) Good thing I spent the $90 for other stuff I needed there. Screw Basics Plus. Fine, but why does your receipt say to bring back the original packaging if you mean it must be unopened? Limited selection and high prices are bad enough, but the consistently grouchy service really seals the deal for a solid two stars. At least the folks at the big box stores (if you can catch them) don't snarl.
