Came here to replace a bulb recently... it was not a standard socket but the staff at the shop were extremely helpful even with my inept description, because stupid me didn't bring the old bulb! I came here to get a key copied and they were very nice and friendly! I didn't have to take my key off the keychain and they copied it while I browsed the store. They have almost everything here - from kitchen sink drainers, Raid, and normal hardware stuff, to cleaning supplies and command strips. Note that the key copy is $3 but there's a $10 credit card minimum. I was trying to find something to meet that minimum and after the guy finished copying my key, he was ready and more than happy to help me find something I needed to hit the minimum. When a bag was stolen with both my ID and keys I had to change my lock cylinder in a hurry. Shawn at Aurora was recommended to me by a friend and instead of having to pay a locksmith hundreds of dollars to come do it, Shawn walked me through the process in store so I could do it myself. Top notch customer service! I needed a special key copy made for the storm door in the front of my apartment building, which they made but it didn't fit right. Lost my keys a few mornings ago and I had to be online for work in a couple hours so I was stressed. Walked into this neighborhood store and they were able to have someone at my place in about 30 mins for less than $200. Still a lot of money but I've heard of places charging $300+, especially to have someone there in such a short amount of time. Very easy to deal with during a less than ideal situation. read more

AWFUL. Buyer Beware. They do decent work, but lie to you. they installed two locks on our front door, which they said were the locks we needed. The initial estimate was these would cost about $600 (!) but the final bill including labor was $1742. He assured us that if anything went wrong, he'd cover and fix. Just 12 months later, the lock broke, leaving my wife and young daughter outside. They called an emergency locksmith who was available to get back in. The next day she called Aurora, because they promised to cover the exorbitant work they'd done, and he said "you called another locksmith so it's not my problem." We could probably win in small claims court, but we are two working parents, so don't have the time. Again, if you ever work with these people, lock them down on price ahead of time, and don't go to them for anything long term. Truly an awful experience. read more

This is a great local hardware store. I have gone a few times for different reasons and have always gotten great service and found what I needed. I went to buy something once, went to get keys copied, and most recently locked all of my keys in my car and needed a locksmith. They are always very knowledgeable, competent, fast, and reliable. On top of that, they are actually just really really nice and friendly people, which might not be the top thing people are looking for from a hardware and locksmith store, but for me it is the something extra that makes me go here over other places in the general area! Really can't recommend this place enough and feel like this store has helped me out in a pickle on multiple occasions. read more

These guys are great! Super helpful and though they seem tough, they are very friendly. I think what appears as a "tough face" is more of a "I-know-my-hardware face". I'm usually getting lightbulbs or screw/anchor combo packs, but sometimes I go in there with a specific art project objective that I don't quite know how to execute, like a "I need to do this with this and want it to look like this or be able to hold x amount of weight" and they are patient enough to listen to my babble and willing to make suggestions and brainstorm possible solutions. So suprised to see the good reviews here. 2 years ago, I made a key copied here, but I had to run to the store again to make a new copy because the first copy just couldn't open the door. Luckily the second version worked out - so they are able do a nice job but why not just do it in begining. And today, I wanted to make a new copy of the key because my mom is coming. Well, I went to the store there is one guy asked me if I need any help, he is very friendly. i said i just need to make a key copy. He told me to ask another guy who was stading at the cashier. Ok, I told that guy what I need then he made me TWO copies of the key....I was supried and asked why, he insisted that I said two copies, and kept asking me to think about what I really said.....He was so mean, and kept saying he is not a perfect person but he is perfect at his work.....seriously? what a joke. read more

Aurora is an example of a small enterprise that has flourished with gentrification instead of being shut down by it. Kudos to them and a blessing on their house. While some of their clerks speak Russian and Polish, they might benefit from a Spanish-speaker for clear reasons. This team was a helpful, knowledgeable, and communicative resource while I was working one of the construction projects from May to July 2019 in North Williamsburg, over by Kent Ave. Always happy to have a conversation about construction projects, and the talks can be humorous and light-hearted or realistically technical. Not every clerk is versed in all construction, so they can at least commiserate. Gentrification has caused a construction boom in those big buildings where I worked, and there's a steady renovation market for this company. This is the one of the hearts of Williamsburg's restaurant culture, so it would benefit the store to bone up on restaurant hardware and plumbing supplies. Likewise, hipster go-to's like gardening and houseplants can probably be expanded. Any sort of bicycle equipment and repairs could probably be subtly integrated, imo. They've already made these moves over the course of the last decade, so I might be late to the party on this one. read more

I am a little surprised to see what great ratings this place has. I have to say, I live right around the corner from this place and am now in search of a new hardware store to go to, even if that means getting on the subway. So far these guys usually can give me what I need but the service leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe I am going at all the wrong times, but 3 of 4 of the staff members I have asked for help, have given me one word, snarky answers. They don't seem to be able to leave their seat behind the desk and if I need help finding something, point in the general direction rather than assist me. I see them being rude to other customers, not only myself and are some of the least friendly people at a local business on Bedford I've met. That being said, there is one younger gentleman who always seems willing to help, and often jumps in when the other men behind the counter are too rude to assist. Noname young blonde man is very appreciated and if all the employees were as friendly and eager as him, or even half as helpful, I'd have a much different rating. read more

The one star is for the owner. Today I dropped off a UPS return package and I wanted a confirmation before I left. I had no problem waiting and I never have any issues with the staff (who deserve 5 stars). When I walk in the owner asked how he can help. I was holding my return package, I told him I want a confirmation email, he tells me to write down my email, I tell him I want it before I leave. He informs me this how they do it, basically they will input my info when every he feels like. I tell him I never have an issue and that they or myself always input my email while I'm there. He lets me know that he's the owner and the he only get 50cents per package. Human error happens which is why I want a confirmation that I dropped of my package when I am present. If you don't want to help or provide the service of accepting UPS packages then don't provide the service. I will no longer be dropping off my packages at this location nor supporting it in anyway. There was no reason for this kind of interaction. If the owner didn't want to deal with my drop off he could have easily told me to wait so that one of the 2 employees could have assisted me. If I'm dropping off a package I have a right to a confirmation, it's not too much to ask. And although the employee said my email was input for a confirmation, I have not received a confirmation email and it is the next day. I hope my return arrives to its destination. read more

I bought an outlet plug (so my kid wouldn't play with the outlet). I returned it within one hour because it din't fit the particular outlet. The guys at the store (where i have shopped many many times in the past) gave me a store credit that expires within two months. It's one thing to give store credit, but one that expires? Massive fail today. Will never return. And will gladly give my business to Amazon/ Home Depot etc. Like most reviews of this kip on here, I've experienced helpful staff and a good selection of product for a local joint (although, not entirely all that friendly for the most part - abrupt would come to mind). But today has prompted me to write my first review on Yelp coz all I needed today was a garden hose. They had a selection but they were stacked high so I could see the range of choice incl. length, price and other aspects that would help me pick a decent hose. In short, I cannot come to terms with the prick behind the counter and his attitude. I stated that I needed help - what you need help with? - choice, price, length etc. - tell me what you want - I want help! - the prick looks at me with the body language that says I don't give flying fcuk about you dude and I say, I don't know why this has to be this hard, I'm just looking for a little service - he responds by dismissively saying I'm busy I can't help you... what a massive prick. WAAAAAAAAY overpriced. Yes, just like everything else in the neighborhood. Specifically, here, they are gouging customers based on the fact most of their customers lack basic construction knowledge. Most recent example: Furniture Dolly @ Aurora $52. Furniture Dolly @ Crest $23. When i called their Owner out on their BS, he gave me this finky smile. Perhaps you've seen this smile before. The only alliteration that comes to mind is the smile you get when you hop in a some stank 3rd World taxi where the driver asks about your trip only so that he can find the right time to come back with some stooges and steal your internal organs with a hacksaw - that smile. Its that beady eye smile. Its that smirk the mouth muscles are forced to make as the venom sacs slowly fill. Fu*k this place! Fu*k their venom smirks. Awful!!! DO NOT GO HERE. I bought paint stripper from them and it was seriously ineffective. I've used it before and this stuff was less than standard. I went back to the store and explained that it wasn't working and the guy was A TOTAL JERK TO ME. I was polite and sincere about everything. As soon as I said I wanted to exchange it, he started talking back to me. So unbelievably rude. They refused to exchange the product and told me it was my loss.
