Pancakes larger than my head. I can't decide what I like more, the pancakes or the boy that took me to Crest Cafe. Let's say for now I like the boy better. for now. But back to the pancakes. Fluffy, mildly sweet, airy and HUGE. And you get three, with eggs and sausage links. All for cheaper than at ihop. I was pretty hungry and I finished less than 40% of the pancakes. Mike got a sandwich that was pretty tasty as well. Over all, I thought it was at least two notches above the usual diner fare and at decent prices. I just came here for lunch with coworkers because someone suggested this place. I've never been so I agreed. We arrived and were seated right away. The place was practically empty with only about 4 or 5 tables being occupied. It's a nice sized place with plenty of room yet they put is in the corner booth far away from the bar and televisions, the World Cup is on. Our server came to us promptly and took our drink order. I ordered a lemonade and got a pink lemonade that was really sweet. Too sweet for my taste, it wasn't bitter at all, it was sweet and it's not refreshing on a hot day. I ordered the BBQ bacon burger and my coworkers ordered the crunchy taco lunch special. Here is where it starts getting bad. We waited a pretty long time, about 15 minutes maybe for all of our food to get out to us. Granted it was lunch time, but this place was not busy at all. No one else walked in after us so there was no real reason to take so long with our food. We made it clear as well that we needed to be in a rush because we only had a certain amount of time for lunch. One of the taco orders came back with no meat in it. She brought it up and the server took it back so they could remake it. This meant that now two of us had food to eat in a rush and the third person had to wait for her food. Sucks to be her right. My burger was weird looking. It wasn't a burger in the traditional sense, like a delicious looking meat patty on a bun with other stuff on it and then another bun. It was like a huge patty that was too big for the bun on accident, semi cooked bacon, and melted shredded cheese on top with BBQ sauce splattered around like someone just held the BBQ sauce bottle up and hit the bottom of it to make the sauce come out. It didn't look good, and it didn't taste good. I barely ate half. The fries were okay, and the ranch sauce was like normal ranch, can't complain there. Then finally we had to leave, so we asked for a to go box for my coworker and the check. The box came but not the checks. When the checks finally came, the server didn't come by to pick them up. We got up to go pay at the front and she caught us halfway and took them from us. I decided to not give a tip and we finally came back to work, a few minutes late. Now here is where it went from a 2/3 star review to a 1 star. As soon as I got back to my desk, my stomach started telling me that something just showed up to hang out with it and it was not welcomed inside my body. After a few minutes of having hot flashes and thinking in my head if I could hold out until I got home or not, I gave in and found a restroom far away from where I normally am at so no one would recognize me. I now feel 5 pounds lighter so I guess that's good. Then I get the phone alert that I just spent money somewhere so I go check it to make sure everything matches up and of course, it doesn't. They charged me twice for different amounts. I called and spoke with the owner and he said he was sorry for our experience and that he would buy us all lunch next time we went. I spoke with the server who explained that she didn't charge my drink to my ticket so the second charge was the actual drink and that everything was correct in the end. Avoid this place unless you've been there before and you know what to get and what you like. Don't come here in a rush either cause you might not be out in time. And last but not least, if you aren't sure about this place, make sure you are within sprinting distance of a bathroom once you're done eating or else you're going to have elementary school flashbacks. read more

Since my In-Laws live pretty close by I've been here like 20 plus times over the years for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They always have a daily special but the menu has never changed, a little something for everyone though. Definitely pricey considering the OK to bad service and consistently just OK food. The last time I was here for breakfast about 6-8 weeks ago the hostess was downright rude but, I'm sure she doesn't even work there anymore. But in true yelp fashion I have decided to share it with the rest of the world. I go here at least 1-2 times a week. My friends and I can't get enough Crest Cafe! Here, avocados are as abundant as fish in the sea- they never charge you extra for extras. Even those pricey avocados. The menu here is grande. You can get anything from a sandwich to lemon butter halibut to the most juicy New York steak you could ever fork in your mouth. I like to think of Crest Cafe as the overachiever like you knew in high school-They excel in everything! Every single dish is perfect. They do not mess up. They never mix up your order. yes this is real. I recommend you go there and start with one of their appetizers. The bruschetta is bursting with flavor-not to mention tomatoes, garlic and olive oil! Everything here is homemade. Even the croutons. Sometimes you'll go and they say, "we can't put any croutons in your salad becuase they aren't finished being toasted". That my friend is true. If you don't try the balsamic vinegarette, I will make you by shoving it in your mouth because that is the best balsamic I have ever had in a salad (mimi's cafe has the second best). They have a healthy menu and an extensive breakfast menu. The omelette is big enough where you probably will be able to skip lunch that day and have only a small dinner. It is loaded with flavor too. Worst Service in the world! Went in last night with my friend and our kids we asked the guy that sat us for water and he quickly brought them, then maybe 10 minutes later a lady who had no interest in even pretending to be any kind of polite said "you ready now" we ordered, food took forever (it was dead) she brought food and never came back! My kid spilled juice everywhere and no one to be found to ask for napkins, went inside asked for a box and the check! Never once did she ask if everything was okay or if we needed anything! This place seems to have gone downhill since they merged with next-door neighbor Tortilla Grille. I had a lot of good memories of eating here regularly 5 years ago, my wife's work was just across the street and we visited Crest Cafe at least once a week. Back then, we enjoyed the quality of food, the service and the atmosphere. However, after a few recent visits, I feel like those are all lost to the past. I remember enjoying their variety of sandwiches, from beef-dips to clubs. In both of my recent visits, the sandwiches were very dry and partly stale, and the veggies were clearly mushy and not fresh. I tried a couple of times after, and the full meals were a bit better, but definitely not as good as they used to be. In my most recent visit, the floors and table were FILTHY. Food, napkins, just muck, all over the ground, and the tables weren't being bussed. I thought they were just too busy to clean, but no, we were the only customers in there, and there were two waitresses just watching the TV. They had to wipe down a table for us (and by wiping down, they took a rag and just pushed all the foodstuffs onto the ground next to us). The cold and mediocre food was sad enough. But it was far worse since there were bits of chewed meat and discarded food all around our table. I'm assuming the management here has gone downhill. The place looked pretty nice inside and besides.....they had Air Conditioning! *ahhh* The waitress was really nice and joked around with us a little. What a nice lady she was. Since it was 12pm I didn't want to go for breakfast so I went for the cold tuna sandwich and a cup of coffee. My parents are addicted to this place. It's really the only place they go out to eat anymore. With all of the new restaurants opening up in Riverside, they always end up back at Crest Cafe. I have to admit...their food is damn good. I've tried a LOT of different things from the menu and I am never disappointed. My mom adores the bruschetta. She orders it to-go for every family party or get-together we have. Even if I am just coming over for a random visit I have Crest Cafe bruschetta waiting for me. I know there are a lot of new chains opening in Riverside (hello PF Changs and Cheesecake Factory) and that's cool and all. But it makes you look a lot more cool to take a date somewhere off the beaten path that has freaking delicious food than some trendy you-can-find-it-anywhere chain restaurant. Crest Cafe rules. This restaurant seems like it is suffering from an identity crisis. The owners & managers must have no clue about branding a restaurant and you can see their major lack of direction. It's two restaurants in the same building. There is lite rock music playing but turned down so low you cannot hear more than a whisper. The interior is bland, mauve and dark mismatched woods. There are ugly botanical paintings on the walls that look like they were done by an old lady. There is a bar and tv area right when you walk in that almost looks like a sports bar type place. Red Starbucks style glass lanterns clash horribly with the walls and the flower paintings! The result of all this hodgepodge is it looks like the business isn't really ready to be open yet. Reminds me of places I've seen on shows where they give a restaurant a makeover for a better business model.... The table busser is just a guy wearing street clothes (jeans & a red sports team t-shirt) which really looks unprofessional and unhygienic. He could at least wear black slacks and a polo shirt with an apron. The menu is all over the place. There's Mexican food, bruschetta, salads, burgers and sandwiches, and more formal seafood or chicken type dinners around $18.99 a plate? We had the $6.99 lunch specials... Tacos & cheese enchiladas. They were just ok. Tastes like Alberto's tacos, and plate is 2/3rds bland beans and rice. A soda is $3!!! What the hell! Quite overpriced for quality you can get pretty much anywhere. The only reason I didn't give Crest Cafe one star is because of the very nice server at the end of the meal who comped our ticket and was truly apologetic and embarrassed about our experience. Our breakfast here a couple weeks ago was a downright disaster. My "omelette" was nothing more than SIX rubbery scrambled eggs smushed together with greasy veggies wedged in the middle. My potatoes were fine, but my hubby's were so burnt black that they were completely inedible. The biscuits and gravy came out stone cold, and their gravy was a thin chicken based gravy. I asked for my bacon crispy, and boy was that a mistake. It was so over burnt that it crumbled like dust. How could anyone do that to bacon? *shudder* The very nice waiter at the end of the meal (our waitress never came back after I politely told her the biscuits and gravy were cold), begged us to come back and give the place another shot. I really value Valerie M's opinions and reviews on places - and her review for The Crest Cafe has had me curious since the beginning. Couple that with some of the other Yelps I read about the place and it was just a matter of time before the wife and I decided to give it a try. And so a couple weeks ago, we did just that. In fact - we turned the visit to the Crest Cafe and the Canyon Crest Town Center its located in into a day trip. Overall, we were quite pleased! I read a review in the local newspaper stating that the Crest had moved to a larger location in the CCTC; so we never got a chance to experience its former locale. The newspaper seemed to think that the new location was too "airy and industrial-looking" and not cozy enough. I'm not sure I agree with that. There was an airy feeling to the place, yes - but not overly lofty and echoey. The first thing you see when you walk in is a gleaming bar with 2 flatscreen tv's. There is ample, comfortable seating all around. The food was quite good. I decided on an Ortega burger and the wife opted for breakfast (which is served all day!). Her's was called the "2, 2 and 2". Two French Toasts, 2 eggs and 2 bacon/sausage. The portions were generous and we were very pleased with our food. There were only two things that prompted me to not give it the 5th star. Firstly were the menu prices. Whereas the breakfast menu's prices were reasonable - I felt that the Lunch/Dinner menu was a tad pricey. Of course - this is without having sampled said menu at length yet. The second item was the service. It was a bit slow - especially at a time when the place didn't seem that busy. Still - this just gives the place room for improvement. However, the Crest Cafe is certainly worth a visit if your in the area and hungry for good food - especially breakfast! read more

Let them eat a HUGE slice of cake!!! For those of you with a sweet tooth, you are in luck here. I don't know how you can order a salad in this place since as soon as you walk in the cakes and pies stare you in the face. The cake slices are at least 3 layers, most are 4 or 5 layer cakes. and can feed a small family. My boyfriend and i usually get two different slices to bring home and eat on them for a couple of days. My personal favorites: either of the chocolate cakes and the lemon cake. Love this place, the staff is super friendly, never a long wait for food, and the grub is delicious. I just recently moved to Riverside for school and the daily consumption of fast food joints was catching up to me. Decided to stop by here and instantly fell in love. Came in around 4 so missed the lunch specials but too early for dinner so there were no other customers except us. If you have a particular craving, this is not the place to go. There is limited variety. I ordered the Chicken Club Burger last Sunday and it was somewhat unappetizing. I'm a big fan of breakfast. I love the greasy sides, the runny eggs and the buttery toast. However, brekkie at Crest didn't deliver. French toast tasted like a mildly sweet bread... I don't even think it was dipped in an egg batter to begin with. The potatoes and bacon were crisp but had no flavor whatsoever. They did give warm syrup which was a plus. Boyfriend had the gravy and biscuits. The gravy was creamy but tasted like it had too much milk and was not savory. Don't waste your time or money. First time trying this cafe this morning and definitely the last. After being seated and waiting 35-45 mins for our food; I noticed that parties that were seated after us were already finished with their food. The server was fine. She did what she could so I don't blame her. But, I asked her why is it that the other parties received their meals way before we did and she acknowledged that they had by saying "I know, the party behind you received theirs and are already done". Ok? Great glad she noticed but she didn't apologize or try to accommodate us or anything. Then when our food comes to our table the potatoes and sausage were cold. I didn't even touch the potatoes at that point. I then asked if the potatoes could be removed from the check. She removed them after I asked. I've previously worked in the restaurant business and typically the supervisor or manager has to approve discounts or removing items from the check. So I thinking this is not the place to work for, as a waitress. The busboy seemed to loitering around wiping empty tables already cleaned. The food was okay for $5.99 chicken taco with lettuce and tomato and rice and beans. Having to eat lots of Mexican food. This dish was mediocre and is comparable to any another fast food taco joint. The tacos were kind of greasy. The bottom of the taco I didn't eat. Not crispy, but oily. Rice and bean okay, but I thought the rice needed seasoning. Refried beans were okay, not too salty. As for the service it was okay, but it seems like the staff didn't want to be there. Total damage 4 beers and one taco place $29.00 with tax. and Ieft a $4 tip. On Taco Tuesdays we'd come here when we didn't want to drive all the way to Riverside Plaza. The deal is pretty good, $1 tacos but the crutch is you have to purchase a drink too. The staff doesn't know what they are doing, the manager doesn't know how to keep the kitchen stocked, and the food is rather bland and over priced. A salmon shouldn't need to be cut with knife and fork. It's no wonder half of this restaurant is closed down. Service was so bad. I got there and was seated outside. When seated I was offered a drink, and didn't get it until I physically went inside after 20 minutes to ask where my water was. Went to this place for breakfast for the first time, I figured since it was in Canyon Crest that it would be good but boy was I wrong. To start my wife had huevos ranchreos and did not look appealing at all and was not that hot and seems like it was sitting at the counter awhile before it came out. l ordered and basic French toast and eggs, to be honest for the price I paid I should have just made this at home. Now let's not leave out the service after we were seated it took some time before we ask about drinks and while eating our subpar breakfast our server hardly acknowledged us so it did reflect in the tip.
