Hands down the best restaurant in Jackson. The food NEVER disappoints and the service is amazing. The owner, Bob, even walks around checking on his customers and visits with them. He is one of the nicest, most welcoming people I've ever met. Now onto the food... you will never eat a more delicious fried jumbo shrimp anywhere. They are light crispy and not a hint of grease. The Snapper Lena will blow you away. The steaks are succulent and tender, I could go on and on. The comeback sauce?? It's what they serve on everything in Heaven. The atmosphere made me feel like I was in an old movie, and that a gangster or a politician might walk in at any minute with his/her entourage! It was so delightful! Please do yourself a favor and run, don't walk to Crechale's. The neighborhood might be a little sketchy but there's always a tough looking yet gentlemanly security officer keeping an eye on things. Overpriced and food was disappointing. Fried flounder had a slight fishy taste. Steak was thin (not thick like the ones in display case), chewy and cooked on a flat top, not charbroiled. There's no seasoning on the meat. Drink glasses so small my straw kept falling out. Toasted bread already out on all the tables (not sure how long it had been sitting out) was cold and stale. Fried soft shell crabs were doughy, undercooked in the center, again, no seasoning, just batter. $210.00 for 5 adult dinners and 2 children's plates. No appetizers, no alcohol, no desserts, no extras. The only good thing was the service. read more

Visited here on strength of yelp reviews. We were in the mood for some good seafood, but did not find it here. Started with onion rings as an appetizer, very good. The onion rings had our mouths watering for the seafood to come. We ordered flounder and the seafood platter. We are from the Texas gulf coast and love our seafood. This did not even come close. EVERYTHING on the seafood platter was fishy tasting, not fresh. THe flounder, while fresh, was the most blandly tasting piece of fish I have ever encountered, not even a hint salt or pepper. We were going to order their signature snapper dish but they were out of crab meat. The bill for this catastrophe was over $100. Stay away or you will regret it. read more

Other 5 star review are right on point. Can't really add much but to say: they do take out orders. I guess it is just so fun to go that in 30 years I just never thought about it, but recent necessities have us at home so I called in and we got the seafood plater with soft-shell crab and stuffed shrimp and onion rings. Dinner for 2 with 2 glasses of merlot - $84.00 (includes 20% tip). We have been hearing about Crechale's for years and decided to go see for ourselves since it has been in business since 1956. The interior looks as if nothing has been touched since 1956 too. The red snapper was tasteless. Fried shrimp were delicious. Great service from our delightful server and a very warm welcome by the owner were 4-5 star but the food didn't measure up to the prices. Salad is served on bread & butter plates. When you try to eat it, lettuce falls off the plate onto the table. Comeback sauce is the only salad dressing served. We were happy to give it a try and see the vintage interior everyone raves about, but we will not add it to our favorite Jackson area restaurants. read more

This place is the quintessential restaurant of Jackson. Even my father used to come here in the 50's when I was only a twinkle in his eye. My Dad used to raver about the broiled flounder which is still deboned at the table by hand, one of the many charms of this timeless establishment. I highly recommend the broiled flounder, but almost always get the soft shelled crab (always fried; the broiled just isn't as good). The snapper Lena is a wonderful third ok my all time list. Many rave for the steals here as well, and I'm sure they are excellent, but I can't pass on the incredibly good seafood. Nothing compares to broiled and/or fried seafood finished in butter with a touch of sherry. Incredibly delicious. The wine list is a bit restricted, but the King Estate Pinot Gris is a fine accompaniment to the seafood dishes and is at a price comparable to the liquor store, so I can't complain about that either! Bob Crechale has kept a timeless classic in Jackson for over 55 years and I highly recommend it if you are ever to visit the Capitol city; it's a definite 'must dine' in an, otherwise, sea of culinary mediocrity. read more

THIS IS A 2012 REVIEW: the food is horrible,,,Capt. D's is 2 doors down and would have been a better choice! The decor is OLD & DRAB! The food is BLAND! Tonight I took 1 bite of my entree (1 pc of fried red snapper for $19.95) and that was 1 bite too many! Alerted the waitress of our disappointment and she sent this big lady over and she wanted to know what was wrong....let her know we didn't like and she proceeded to charge 14$ for the salad...which I didn't really mind because that was impossible to mess up! but it wasn't a 14$ salad....Can't end w/out saying something good, so here goes: THE BREAD WAS WONDERFUL! read more

I love Crechales! It's hard to know where to start - from Bob (the effervescent owner who says, "good to see you!" the minute you walk in the door), to the classic jukebox (playing mostly country hits from the 50's), from singing "happy birthday" multiple times during your meal with everyone else in the place -"C'mon Everybody, Hail, Hail the Gang's all Here!" to the red snapper, comeback dressing and onion rings (my favorites) and the "hunk of butter" on your baked potato I could go on and on....... But trust me - It's worth the sometimes long wait for a table and it's worth a drive from anywhere. My relatives from Seattle, Oregon, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Atlanta beg to eat here when they're in town. This place is like no other and you will love it too! read more

The first time I visited Crechale's was in the late 50's, and I have been going ever since. My favorite menu item is the Prime Rib Extra Cut. Now called the "King's Cut". But the stuffed flounder is great and so is the ambience. A 1955 model dining room, virtually unchanged. Even the selections on the juke box are the same. And every night, somebody has a birthday! They play "Happy Birthday" on the Juke Box and the entire wait staff and crowd sings along. "Hail, hail, the gang's all here". Did I say the food is great? Worst place I have ever eaten in Jackson. I doubt you will keep this review up, but the service was great. The owners or managers we just a bad as the food. Chopped steaks were pile on a plate with some sort of watery brown grease. My shrimp brochette were cold served on a plate of cold butter with half cooked pieces of bacon fat. Worst entrees ever, I would not even take home to my dogs to eat. We did however have great salads and onion rings. I was way over charged for this horrible meal a total of $70.49 for 2 coke-colas, 2 iced teas, salads and an order of onion rings. Stay Away!! Save your paycheck! Go to Captain D's instead...the food there is MUCH better! We started with the onion rings which were good, BUT $9.00 for one onion's worth of onion rings? Come on! I had the fried stuffed shrimp....DO NOT ORDER! They were stuffed with the most disgusting, bland, frozen, Wal-Mart type stuffing i have ever tasted. I paid $25.00 for this privilege. My husband ordered the king rib-eye which made my dog very happy...she got to eat a $35.00 steak that night because my husband did not like it at all. The baked potatos were smaller than the size of your fist and came with just butter on them. Also, buyer beware.... a SINGLE can of soda costs $2.00!!!! Ridiculous. My grandparents used to take us to Crechale's for special occasions. It was always such a treat! I love how nothing has changed with the place, even in the 20 years I have been going. The service is always excellent and the food is wonderful. Seafood platter is delicious with a great variety - love the oysters and shrimp. The steak and salad are always good too. Its a trek for us to get to it now that we've moved, but its always worth the drive. read more

Agree with others that the inside reminds me of the 40's in a very good way, classic 40's lighting and table arrangement, etc. The owner/host was very accomodating and very friendly when we arrived at 8:30. The one poster that talked about a "high dollar" dive wasn't kidding; I'm not opposed to the high dollar part as long as the quality is superb, need a bit of quantity at a dive as well but wouldn't hold it against a superb meal, but this was very high dollar with (for the most part) very average. Total for 2 with tip was $82, here's the menu, 2 cokes, onion rings, ribeye, greek salad, 2 baked potatoes, lemon pie and 2 coffees. Dinner salad was the size of a saucer, $14 greek salad was full of capers and fishy smelling crab, no greek dressing(for the greek salad,,very confusing) just the house(1000 island) and for $14 the plate was the size of a break plate, maybe smaller but certainly not the size of a dinner plate, ribeye was very good, about 12 oz, done perfectly, baked potatos were smallish,,size of a small fist. Coffee was good and fresh, lemon pie was not really pie,,thought I was in for an awesome merangue but instead was treated to a bad pastry shell, not a pie crust,,it was a hard shell,,,with lemon pudding, that was runny and not set. Perhaps the greek salad was our fault but it was featured prominantly. The place is very cool, if I lived in Jackson I'm sure we would find a good entree to be the "go to" but this trip was unimpressive especially for the price. If you have many bites at the apple maybe you can find what you really like but I couldn't recommend if you're passing through. read more

Do not order the shrimp brochettes. They gave me small shrimp with small fatty pieces of bacon that was not cooked well. The shrimp reminded me of what people use as fish bait. Crechale's has been in business in Jackson over 50 years. Our waitress had worked there since 1967!!!! The atmosphere is great, with a very friendly staff and Mr. Crechale goes out of his way to visit with his guests and make them feel right at home. As far as the menu goes, I recommend the seafood options (the fried shrimp are as good as it gets) versus the steaks. The onion rings appetizer were excellent as well. read more

A very warm welcome from the owner and staff as we walked in... Very cozy place not a lot of tables...we sat down right away waitress asked if we wanted onion rings which we got and which I highly recommend, they are thin cut... I got the fried shrimp which were great not too big not too small.... My wife got a fillet and my father-in-law got a king cut ribeye, both are broiled and it gave the meat a very clean taste, it did not have a lot of seasoning type flavor so I do not recommend any kind of steaks at this place.... It looks like everybody else ordered seafood and I regretted I did not convince everyone to do so.... Also my kids got fried chicken strips and french fries these people know how to fry food so I highly recommend any kind of fried seafood at this place... Crechale's used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I fell in love with it on my honeymoon. My husband and I ate there the night we got married. I have always loved the atmosphere actually better than the food. Now that we live in Madison, we eat there about every two months. We are always greeted by Bob Crechale. He will even sit with us at our table and talk sometimes. Tonight when we went, we got to see the true Bob Crechale, not the happy greeter. We and everyone else in the restaurant witnessed him screaming and hollering at one of his bus boys or waiters for a good five minutes. After a while, I got up and went to the counter and said with tears in my eyes, "I can't eat here if you are going to scream and treat your employees like that." He said, "Mam, I hope you enjoy your evening." I turned around and went to get my coat, purse, and husband. He kept hollering at me to explain why he was screaming at his employees. Apparently, there were two different parties there that had similar names and he had told the kid 3 times. My husband gave the waitress $20.00 for my half a glass of wine and our 2 salads and we left. As we were walking out the door, he screamed, "Mam, it's for sale, buy it if you want to run it!" I think it's time to throw in the towel, Mr. Crechale! read more

As i read the reviews, I just don't get it. This is old school and great school ! Bob and his staff are the best on the planet at creating a one of a kind atmosphere. I had my first date there when I was 12. Mother drove.. and waited outside. The bill for two $12,78. A bargain then and now. For me, the whole broiled flounder de-boned at the table is tops. Would put it up against any fish dish..any where. But for starters... onion rings and home made croutons soaked in their comeback sauce is indescribable. My wife loves their famous fried shrimp... with there homemade ..tarter sauce. Steaks, especially the filet, are always cooked to perfection. Ribeyes are a touch fatty for me anywhere but full of flavor. Smoked chicken is a draw as well if thats your liking. The tarts with the fresh whipped cream offer a great finale to the evening.. cost with a drink and tip $75.00 now thats still a bargain ...!!! For 48 years... this is my favorite and will continue to as long as there is a tall Greek behind the counter.. a bit of a drive ...but well worth it ! "Old School Restaurant" is a nice way of putting it. Basically the decor is extremely outdated. Looking past the decor, I was determined to give this place a try, since I have heard many rave reviews.... Onion rings: pretty good. NY Strip steak: meh. I have definitely had much better food. The steak did not live up to the hype, the salad was chopped lettuce covered in comeback on a teacup saucer. I have no intentions of returning. Save your money! read more
