Most dudes get their hair cut at places like Sport Clips or the Hair Cuttery, and their cut looks, well... cheap and generic. I think going to a salon is worth the money IF you can find the right stylist. Some do better with men's cuts than others. I've been getting my cuts done by Jocelyn for about two years now. She always has made my hair look great and doesn't get discouraged when I occasionally tell her "just make it shorter and make it look good." Granted, over the past couple years she knows what I like and what I typically go for. Only "fault" I can give is that I wish Jocelyn would hound me to come in more, as I typically put off haircuts until it's far too long. All joking aside, she's a great hairstylist and a lot of fun too. If you're a dude and looking to step up from the cookie-cutter places, give Salon Salome a try. read more

Love this place, I've been going there for 4yrs and won't let anyone but Yvette cut my hair. It's perfect everytime and a good prcie for guys. If your afraid to change the same haircut you had when you were in highschool or your prefer a frumpy look this probably isn't the place for you. These people are from the city and know what looks good. Been coming to this Salon since it's inception 18 years ago. The Salon never looks the same each time I go in, and they do a great job at keeping the space fresh. The vibe is non-pretentious, warm, welcoming and professional. Susie has been my stylist for decades, and as a performer in Chicago, I am constantly being complimented on my hair! Well, I'm not sure what a couple of the reviewers experienced when they wrote about their bad haircuts and the idea of paying too much. I really can't relate. I have been going to Salon Salome Yvette, the owner of the Salon cutting my hair and I pay less than $60. To me, that's a really reasonable price for a fantastic cut. I am constantly being asked where I go to get my hair done. Yvette is the first stylist to understand that my short to mid-length hair is on the finer side even though I have a lot of it, so using a razor DOES NOT WORK! It leaves my hair scraggly and damaged looking after a few weeks. She listens to what I want, too, and recreates it from either the pictures I show her or my verbal description, which can be confusing probably. Either way, she makes good things happen on my head! Two of my coworkers have already gone and loved their cuts. Aside from the fact that this salon offers quality cuts for a reasonable price, I absolutely love the vibe here. First of all, I was a little late to my appointment and they were totally understanding. Secondly, there is no pressure to buy anything although they do carry a full line of TIGI products out of England. The staff are all friendly and competent. The place has NONE of that shee-shee attitude that I really hate at certain salons. Here, you walk in, people remember you, you get to have interesting conversations, you get a great cut and then go. It really is like one reviewer described--that the place is like one of those salons old ladies go to for gabfests only without the old ladies. So, if you prefer to pay a lot of money, talk to no one, be treated rudely or coldly and feel pressured to buy some product before you leave, you probably should go to another place. read more

I didn't know about this salon until I walked past it one day on my way to a coffee shop in Lincoln Park, but since I really needed a haircut (my hair was down to my waist...), I decided to give it a try. I wrote down the name of the salon, looked it up online, and called to make an appointment. Alonso was the stylist that cut my hair. He's relatively new, but he did a great job. I know my hair is kind of difficult to deal with, it being so long and very heavy/thick, so I definitely appreciate the time and effort he took to cut my hair (it took about 2 hours). After he was finished, my hair was layered beautifully and was nice and straightened. The prices at this salon are very reasonable (I paid about $30 without tip, and tipped Alonso very well for the trouble that my hair was!) and I had a good experience my first time here. This was my first visit to Salon Salome. Susie O. was my stylist and she is wonderful. I explained what I wanted, and she did it better than I could have ever imagined. I had color and cut. It's hard when you go to a new stylist, usually it takes a few times to get it how you want it, and even then, it isn't 100% the way you want it. However, this is true perfection. Susie is the salon owner, and is so kind and friendly. I am very happy that I have found a place that I love. The prices are very reasonable. The salon is nice and clean. Two stars for haircut just an old plain basic layered haircut so blunt in the back. She's doesn't liked it at all going back to Annie 's hair design in Annandale little pricey but I guarantee you you love it and worth it every penny. Haircut cost almost the same without Groupon, oh well eventually her hair will grow out, no more Groupon for haircut. Stick with your old hairdresser. I brought my small child to the salon because it was the only option that day. It happens. It's not ideal for anyone but moms need haircuts too. The owner looked at me with an indescribable stare as we entered and when my daughter put her feet on the couch, the owner scowled and said, in a witchy tone, "Little girl, take your feet off of there please." I'm fine with people redirecting my kid but this woman was unnecessarily harsh. Like I said, I'm not naive that some places are not for children, but I was treated unfairly considering my child was well-behaved. We left without getting my hair dive because I felt so uncomfortable. I had come in other times and found the owner to be curmudgeonly and miserable, but it was the other stylists that kept me going and it wasn't until my child was disrespected that I decided to finally take my business elsewhere after almost 2 decades of haircuts. read more

I love this salon and have gone there for years. I was performing in N.Y. at a major opera house and the hair person wanted to work on my hair. Needless to say that person made such a disaster out of my hair that I told the company that I would be leaving for a day to go to Chicago and have my hair fixed. Yes, it was that bad. Yvette worked wonders with the disaster that happened to me. I had been with the salon for years and knew the only place I could go to get my hair fixed. After that time I made sure that any contract involving hair stated that I was allowed to get the company's input, but always flew to Chicago for Yvette to do my hair. This Salon is amazing; the people are great, welcoming, kind, and professional. They know their craft and listen to what a person wants done. They tell the truth and have saved me from making some crazy choices that would have made me look horrible. Often in the entertainment world it is best to have others look at your photos, hair, etc., and give advice because we don't see ourselves as others do. We see ourselves being as glamorous as a model and their hair. However, reality is that we don't all look like that, but thanks to Yvette and her team we can come close and look and feel just like the model in the magazine. I have always received complements on my hair and after many discussion with Yvette, who is a great leader and owner, I decided to let the gray come through. I have had more compliments and had people finally tell me the truth they have wanted to tell me for years; l should have let the gray through long ago. I kept up a good fight for the dark color and now I can see that was a battle I should have surrendered to long ago. It doesn't hurt to have many people compliment my hair quite often, which is what everyone should want and receive. Thanks to Yvette and her team I am happy when people give me a compliment on my hair and then I suggest they go to the salon too. The styling, explaining every question I have, knowing that I will never have to deal with a hair disaster again, the laughing, the sheer joy one feels when going into the salon and walking out feeling and looking great speaks volumes about the salon. This review is long overdue...Salon Salome is the best salon hands down in the city. Yvette (the owner) has been doing my hair for over 20 years now. I don't see her as often as I should and in between my visits I color my own hair with the cheap box stuff, get $5 haircuts and use cheap shampoo. And I always end up regreting that cheap haircut and boxed color. Beacuse let me tell you...how this woman manages to create the miracles she does with my hair is unbelievable! I will forever come to Yvette to work her miracles. And I trust her! The last time I went in, I told her I wanted something new and fresh and I really didn't care what color she did. I said "you are the stylist, you have complete control, just don't go chopping it all off LOL". So she took some time to think about it and said I've got the perfect thing for you. She ended up putting some highlights in my hair along with a shorter layered cut and red hair. I am in love with it! Four years ago, I happened to wander in for a haircut and ended up sitting in Nick Garcia's chair. I've always been very particular about my hair, but he did such an amazing job that I've been coming back regularly. I've convinced ten family members, close friends, people off the street to all come to him. And now they come regularly! He does my mom's hair, my best friend's hair- he even did her hair for her wedding. Waitresses ask me about my hair and then end up coming in. I have never, ever, ever, been disappointed after seeing Nick. The best part is that this salon feels like fam. All the other stylists are wonderful and welcoming and coming in for a haircut or color always feels like I'm checking in on friends. They just gave me a thank you gift because of the number of people I've sent in but honestly the glo up that Nick has given me has been more than enough. I am a generally a non-confrontational person, so throughout my experience at Salon Salome I bit my tongue. I wanted to believe that my cut would be ok because I was paying so much for it! So I left the salon thinking it looked o.k., but the next day I realized what a disaster lay atop my head. I'm all for friendly chat during a hair cut, but the whole time I was there she was yakking with the other stylists about what they were doing later, asking them (and me) for advice on what to do about a boyfriend and cutting my hair very distractedly. I had to finally tell her after 1.5 hours there that I needed to meet a friend (basically translating to "please stop talking and do your job". ) She just didn't seem to be into cutting or styling my hair at all. I asked to go back to my natural medium brown from my blondish highlights, and she put a single-process very dark brown on me. On the phone they said that I was getting a free highlight, not a single process. Then I asked for a sexy tousled bob with layers...and she gave me a very very blunt bob that looked so bad the next day. I basically looked like a Dutch schoolboy. One side was much longer than the other, and it was so bulky in the back. She didn't get that my hair was too wavy to take such a blunt cut. I ended up going to Blo the next day and the stylist fixed it, texturized it, and thankfully rescued my hair. I'm not trying to be mean here, but I felt the behavior exhibited toward a client was highly unprofessional. It was basically like walking into a girls' bathroom of high schoolers who didn't give a damn what they were doing to your hair. I know that some people like that kind of atmosphere, but I much preferred walking into a salon and knowing I didn't have to listen to the stylist's personal woes and I would be taken care of. read more

I had an okay experience with this salon. I simply wanted my hair curled on my b-day, and the lady had me wash it myself before I came in, so all she did was curl it. I should have looked at the prices before I came in, or asked how much before hand, because I thought paying $60 + tip was a little pricey for simply curling my hair. I cannot curl it myself, I have tried. My hair is sooo straight, and I only have it curled on special occasions. I may go back and try this place out again when I need a hair cut. Absolutely unacceptable service. I had gone here once before when it wasn't busy and had a relatively good experience. Nice stylists, decent haircut. I thought I would be a regular here since it's so close to home. It was during my second visit today that I saw the real side of the stylists here when it's a little more busy. Despite setting up an appointment and arriving on time, I waited over 30 minutes without being acknowledged ONCE by a single stylist/employee, as walk-ins received their cuts ahead of me. Not a single person welcomed me, asked if I had an appointment, even acknowledged my existence - I just sat there stupidly the whole time until I left in frustration. It's not my first time at a busy salon by a long shot - I would not have minded the wait, had they at least acknowledged that I was there or something. Are they too snobby and self-absorbed to acknowledge people? Are they too cheap to hire a secretary or desk person? Whatever the reason, I won't be coming back and I would discourage anyone else from coming here as well - unless you have a loooot of time to kill and a ton of patience. read more

I am new to the area and read reviews on this salon here on Yelp. All the reviews were great so I made an appointment with the owner, Susan. I showed her a few pictures of exactly the color I wanted. We talked through it back and forth, I thought she had a good understanding of what I wanted. After I got home and saw the results in the natural light, it was nothing like I had shown her in the pictures. I wanted an ombre and all she did was darken my roots an inch and put 4 highlights on each side of my head for $172. I called as soon and I got home and left a voicemail saying I wanted another appointment to fix it. They didn't call me back for 2 weeks. By then, I went to another salon to fix what she did. This was the worst service I have received. I also cannot believe the customer service of this salon! NO one answers the phone. read more
