You might think you're walking back in time when you step foot inside, what with all the nostalgic candy counters and throw-back displays. Even some of the offerings, like the egg creams, harken back to a different era. But don't let that fool you, this place has some incredible ice cream, including home-made options, and plenty of dairy free choices for those with certain dietary restrictions. We live a walkable distance, and nothing is more fun than walking down on a Summer Friday after work, getting a treat and taking it down to the lake. They even sell my favorite soda, Moxie, by the bottle! Because this is a small, locally owned and operated business, there is going to be a variation in the service. Understanding that you're about to get a huge dose of joy will help to give you a little extra patience, but as others have pointed out, it can be busy and your level of service can vary (and by proxy, the quality of the product). I really like the ambience of this place as it has a 1950's vibe and I like their choice of hard serve flavors, however, their soft serve ice cream is very low quality and every time I've ordered it, it seems like it's half melted right out of the machine - it's more of a liquid soft serve than anything else. Also, they need to prioritize orders better because if you want something simple and quick and there's one person in front of you that orders something complicated, you're going to be there a long time. When I go to other ice cream parlors, complicated orders don't seem to slow down the line because they have the staff to cover it. Here, it seems like there's no more than 2 people working at a time and there's many times I've been there and there was only one person serving a long line of people. They definitely need to be more efficient and do something about their soft serve ice cream machine because it's not working very well. read more

This might just be the new dessert place to go to whenever I'm in Wakefield! Cravings is a cute, spacious shop that sells a variety of sweets ranging from soft-serve to coffee. Its interior is very retro and gives off that old school-esque atmosphere I've only ever seen in movies (or diners). They also offer a variety of candies (such as sour straws, candy cigarettes) as well as fine chocolates and truffles. The service is nice and prompt- the workers greet you the moment you step through the door. There is plenty of seating, ranging from booths to tables. I'm hooked on their mocha soft-serve. The first time we visited, we shared a small cup ($4.50) and that was enough to satisfy our sweet tooths. Its flavor is quite concentrated and its consistency is creamy and smooth. The second time I visited, I had their mochacinno soft-serve, which tasted just like their mocha soft-serve, but upped up a notch, and had vanilla swirls in it. So, so good! What a delicious end to a great evening! We had dinner down the street and wanted a good local ice cream and found Cravings on Yelp. The selection is amazing and the flavors awesome! I had the Ultimate Coffee Frappe and it was just as named. Loss of flavor, good thickness, and just the right amount of coffee and sugar. They have soft serve and frozen yogurt also as well as several types of coffees and espresso drinks. As for the ice cream it's handmade on the premises. They make ice cream cakes and other specialties as well. They really take pride in their coffee although we didn't get any we were stuffed from our ice cream and candy I saw and heard the man behind the counter explaining the process they use in brewing the different types and he seemed pretty intense about it. For our ice creams I got a banana split 2 scoops bananas foster 1 scoop French Vanilla with marshmallow hot fudge and whipped cream my wife got a small Nestle Toll house cookie sundae with hot fudge and whipped cream both were delicious. After a nice visit at Wakefield lake , we took the kids for some ice cream at Cravings - only to be sitting there an see a Roach on the floor! When we told the staff the kid working there said " this is why I can't stand working here " and the young girl said " it's only a baby one " . Not that an apology would have fixed the fact that we were eating with a roach under our table but they didn't say anything they were laughing ! We left in a panic but should have taken a picture I was too shocked to even think of it . I will be calling the board of health tomorrow !!!! I opted for the cinnamon oatmeal cookie, which was good, but not fantastic. The parts with the oatmeal cookie were scrumptious but there weren't many. I got mostly vanilla flavored with cinnamon, with just a few cookie bites. My second flavor was peanut butter cup, which was softer and filled with yummy peanut butter flavor. I've only had the homemade ice cream and the frappes here (not the soft serve), but both are delicious. The ice cream is creamy and a little bit melty, which I prefer to over-frozen stuff. Everytime I go in, they have a handful of new flavors that sound delicious...the hardest part is figuring out which one to order. They have a lot of cone options, and candy all over the place to meet your sugar needs. The retro soda fountain and candy store vibe of this place is pretty cool and fits in great in the old-timey Main Street feel of Wakefield center (according to the Cravings website it's been open since the 1920s). I have no idea why people have been complaining about the service...I've always been served by friendly folks here. Another big upside with Cravings is that the place is open year-round, unlike many ice cream places in the suburbs. They have one of those blend in yogurt machines, so if you, like me dig weird combinations, reeses pieces-cheesecake-malt, or coffee-strawberry-graham cracker they will accomodate.
