    Before--rough skylight opening

Craig is a carpenter and retired general contractor who has a lot of knowledge in fixing just about everything. He has a particular style and makes sure it's going to be a good working relationship before signing onto a job, so be prepared to be interviewed! I hired him to finish my skylight interior as roofing companies won't do the interior portion. Craig problem solved with the imperfect situation at hand, was extremely meticulous and has a very steady hand when free handing cuts with different tools. These qualities make him skilled at any carpentry custom work. If you'd like to save money by being his assistant holding the ends of materials steady or handing up tools, be prepared to be a part of the work! Thank you Craig!

Craig did a great job hanging drywall and repairing patch of wood flooring where old wall heater used to be. Trust worthy and reliable!

Which that part initially seemed to be correct. Filed a claim on July 16, 2025 to have the interior staining removed. On July 17th, PermaPlate approved the claim and told me Fibrenew Long Beach South would be in contact with me and be out shortly to fulfill the claim. Chad made contact with me on July 23, 2025 and initially told me that he would probably be out the following week and asked my availability. On July 28th I reached back out because he never responded back with a day and time. His response was he doesn't make it to LA often and he has 60 days to fulfill the claim. He waited until September to reach back out. He didn't show up to fulfill the claim until the 58th day. Chad initially said he'd be here to fulfill the claim at 12:30pm, but had to push it back until 2:45pm because his car broke down. I tipped him because I felt bad because his car broke down and he seemed stressed and I have been in that situation before. But after he left, I noticed that Chad never returned my key back to me. First he said it was in the center console, then he said he wasn't sure if had walked off with it but would look. After I had to keep following up on him, 11:45 am the next day he confirmed he still had not looked for the key. This guy has been the worst experience I have had with someone purporting to be a professional. Either he is like this with all his PermaPlate clients or he has an inherent bias against people of my race and gender. Now I have to spend my Sunday in the Sheriff Dept filing a report.

I was asked to pay a deposit upfront of $1300 for materials which I agreed to. We arranged to have him come on Tuesday. He called the weekend before to see if he could come Monday. I said yes and he didn't show up until 4pm. He then never came back the next day although he said he would be there. He then showed up Wednesday mid day and I told him we could not go past 5pm. He asked to stay late to finish and I said that was fine. He then asked if I could pay him before he was finished. I said I want to see the final product before I pay so if you want to finish tonight, ok but I want to see it when I'm back in the morning or he could come back. He wanted to finish that night. He then texted me throughout the night asking me to pay him even though I had already said I want to see the final product. We were paying $2500 of which we had already paid half. He also told me he had to miss family time to finish, when I had already told him I was not available that night. The entire time he was flaky showing up and tried to guilt me into paying him the second half when I repeatedly said I wanted to see the final product. The next morning as promised, I looked at the leather and it was splotchy, with paint lines all over it and missed spots. He then came back after I called him to repair it. I paid him to be done with it, but the leather looks awful. It's dried out and feels like cardboard. The color is forest green instead of olive. The material is so hard that I now have puncture makes when the cat jumped up vs before, we had scratch marks but not tears. We now have puncture marks. On top of this he was asking how he was going to move the sofa and was asking me to help him move it. I expect that when someone comes to your house to do work, they have their own guys instead of relying on the customer to move things. I also have chemical stains on my new concrete driveway from where he spilled stains because he parked in our driveway. Terrible experience. Sofa will be donated and we lost $2500.

OH BOY, STUCCO BOY!…read more I met with Jereme (the owner of Stucco Boy/Builder Boy) to discuss an exterior refinishing project. We've got some TEX-COTE that the prior owners added that is failing and in need of repair. To their credit, Jereme is knowledgeable about TEX-COTE and the company even has a landing page on their website describing how to fix a failing application. They offer services to repair and re-apply, and Jereme mentioned this would be an option for us, in addition to a more involved re-plastering. Jereme said he'd break out different options for us. Despite Jereme's demeanor coming off a bit slick and salesy, them being a local company with experience with TEX-COTE gave me some confidence. I received a proposal that I felt was reasonably priced. Before selecting the company for my project, I had some follow-up questions I asked the office staff via email regarding coordinating the project with other work being done-namely a re-roof project that I'd be undertaking. After a little back-and-forth, Jereme called me directly. I was able to ask my questions about coordination with the roofing company, and he put my mind at ease. He described how the roofing company would handle tear-off and paper the roof, and then Stucco Boy would come in and water blast and prep. He was pretty specific about his recommendations and that fully addressed my questions. He said that I'd be able to put them into contact with the roofer to work out the specifics and "when roofing companies hear that, they are relieved"-indicating to me that there'd be a proactive direct coordination that would help streamline the process. WONDERFUL! After receiving HOA approval for the project, I reached out to Builder Boy and said I'd like to proceed with them. I followed up with a few questions including one about timing and order of operations to coordinate with the roofing and solar to take place (roughly, at this point) in January. The responses I got from the office staff to my questions were different than what Jereme had indicated; instead of coordinating with the roofers, they said that it would be better for them to do their work after the roofers had completed. There was some back-and-forth where I tried to reconcile the differences in the office staff's answers/recommendations of doing work after everything else was done and what Jereme had indicated to me on our earlier phone call. Two days after not hearing anything back, I received a phone call from Jereme. He indicated to me that he'd heard from his team that I was "frustrated" and that I had taken an "aggressive tone" with his staff and he hoped to understand my frustration but also see if there was a path forward. He indicated that he cares about his staff; the implication he was stepping in to shield them from unfair treatment. I told him that I was confused, and asked if he'd read the emails-my hope was to ensure we were on the same page about what my issue actually was and for me to understand what about my correspondence was "aggressive." He replied he'd "skimmed" the email-so I asked him if I'd be able to read it to him--much of my confusion stemmed from what the office staff was suggesting and how it was much different than what Jereme had indicated regarding coordinating steps with the roofing company. He responded "I get it, you're a good guy" as if my primary intent in reading him the email to was somehow clear my name, and he followed up with "I'd rather not live in the past and instead just move forward." Wait, seriously?! You imply I'm mistreating your staff, you're only vaguely aware of what my issue actually is and when I attempt to talk in specific terms about either of those things you suddenly want to "move forward"? I tried to explain to Jereme the disconnect, and how the staff's recommendation wasn't what he and I had discussed earlier, so I was confused. He said "it can be done either way" and "it's up to the customer"- but kept insisting that his staff was correct in their suggestion without acknowledging it was different than what he himself earlier had suggested, and that was the source of my confusion. The whole time it felt like Jereme was trying to gaslight me, and whenever I tried to be specific about our conversation or clarify what my issue actually was, he'd deflect and say dismissively "it's up to you; just tell us when to show up and we'll be there." I was pretty floored at this point and couldn't shake the feeling that I was getting hustled by this guy. I knew that as he kept insisting he wanted to "move forward" without actually talking about the nature of the problem, it was a sign that this wasn't the kind of company, and Jereme the kind of person, I could trust. So I calmly told him that it was clear to me it wouldn't be a good fit, he said "OK," and that was the extent of my experience with Builder Boy. Jereme: because you didn't bother reading the email exchange before, I posted it here for your convenience.

Unfortunately this was due to miscommunication as they thought I only wanted to replace 75% of the curb facing siding... not sure why anyone would do that but okay miscommunication happens. Installation: where it was straight shiplap across the front, turned out fine. The window was promised to have a symmetrical thin border across as I was sent photos from the James Hardy website... attached you will see instead it is geometrically cut out to avoid the flashing... could have been made thin and uniform throughout however I was told that it was not possible. Many neighbors have gone through other companies and have the same sized retrofitted window but had the siding all done in the same manner. Mine is the only one that looks like this. Even the installer said "I think it looks cool, we never see it cut like that..." but when it comes to housing clean cut and uniform works for us. I was told later, this couldn't have been known before hand until the old siding and window edges were taken down. However the installer knew it from day 1 and said so to me. I believe that whoever the sales rep is should always be forthcoming with the possibilities of outcomes and what it may look like vs showing examples from the company website yet delivering something else. When I went up on the roof to paint the fresh wood I found multiple spots that were not caulked properly or nailed down. (See attached photos). These were fixed later when they came out to install and fix the remaining portion of siding that I had to pay for as well that I thought was included in the original quote. Again pleased with most of it but a major focal point is the front window which did not come out to expectations of what was originally shown. Anyone can feel free to message me for more pics if needed.
