I got the look that I wanted. Julian delivered. He even offered to come back if anything went wrong, but is confident of his work.
I worked with Julian six years ago on a deck and it was a great experience and the results exceeded expectations. It's great that almost a decade later, Julian is still doing stellar work and is an absolute pleasure to work with! Every time I work with him I find more and more projects I want to complete because he's so good. There are plenty on deck for the future and Julian is my go to for woodworking! Highly recommended (except for when I want to book a job, but totally ok beyond that haha)!
Having just bought a house that needed a lot of work done we had various contractors in and out of the house for the past couple months. The last thing to be done was put up a fence in the front yard, and Julian was by far the best and easiest person to work with out of anyone we used. After an initial text he stopped by the next morning to measure and give suggestions on type of wood to use, height, staining/weatherproofing, and anything else we asked about. We felt very comfortable in his ability and he executed by building a beautiful fence, drawing positive comments from many neighbors. He's a nice guy who cares about the quality of his work and it shows through. We will definitely be using his services again when it comes time to build a backyard pergola.
Julian and Hammerhead woodworking created the most amazing deck/stage for our preschool! Not only is the quality topnotch but he put it together so quickly and was more than patient with all our little friends who had questions for him. The stage has immediately become the best place for circle time, dramatic performances, and spontaneous dance parties! All of our families have commented on how beautiful and well done it is, and were touched when Julian saved some boards for all the children to sign. While the names won't be seen on the outside, it's a perfect little Time Capsule for future students to find many years down the road. We are so grateful for Julian and his company for the beautiful work and great experience for the children to be a part of! We highly recommend Julian and Hammerhead Woodworking!
Julian is a craftsman and accepts nothing short of the best. Julian hand selected all the lumber and made sure it was free of imperfections. He is stainless steel fasteners and redwood posts. He really is the best fence builder in Long Beach. All the lumber was provided by Ganahl Lumber in Los Al and they truly have the best lumber. Thanks Julian..... if you are still looking for jobs we have some one off stuff we are contemplating
Julian did an amazing job building my deck. He was east to work with and good with communication. His craftsmanship was spot on. He is very meticulous and has a good eye for detail. I would highly recommend him. He is also very friendly, personable and good with animals and babies.
We hired Julian to replace a rotting deck at the back of our house after seeing positive reviews about him here and on Nextdoor. He responded to my initial text promptly, and we scheduled an appointment for a look-see the very next day. He arrived to the appointment on time--which is important to us--and it was clear he knew his stuff. As we requested, he gave us three bids for three different scenarios, because we weren't sure we could afford all of the goodies we wanted. We thought his prices were more than fair, so we chose a plan, and we were off! Once Julian demolished the old deck, he told us which parts of the under-structure were sound, and which parts needed replacing. He also pointed out some things the previous builder hadn't done properly, but he very kindly did his best to correct what he could, so that our new deck would be done properly. He showed up every weekday at the appointed hour and worked hard until the job was done, and the deck looks GORGEOUS! We couldn't be happier. AND Julian is just a really nice fellow to have around. We liked him a lot. We're saving up for some more stuff, like a pergola and a fence, and Julian will be our go-to guy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for a competent, friendly woodworker. (Please note the attached picture is of our new deck in its current un-stained status. We're letting her settle in for a bit before adding stain.)
We are so happy to have found Julian on Yelp and can not say enough great things about his attention to detail and amazing demeanor. It took my wife and I several months to decide on what type of wall-topper to have built. The vinyl look did not appeal to us and my wife did not care much for the natural wood finish either. In the end, we agreed on a painted tongue and groove redwood. The end result is amazing and I highly recommend him.
We planned on fencing in our front yard for a couple of years. After many different quotes and proposals, we decided immediately, before even getting his official proposal, that Julian would be our guy. He is one of those authentically genuine guys that we instantly knew was honest. Which, can be hard to find! His quotes were the best and he delivered exactly as promised. We explained why we needed a fence (to keep our children, dogs, and garden contained). He gave us different ideas and we took his advice on the verticle fence. I originally thought the horizontal design would be better but I'm glad we decided against it. It's better than we imagined. It's transformed our front yard into being more than we expected. We get compliments all the time on our fence. He delivered exactly what we wanted (honestly, better!) and in the timeframe he quoted. There was no mess left behind and he was professional from start to finish. He was reliable and personable. We have zero complaints. We plan on hiring Julian for all of our future projects. He already gave us great ideas to replace our old pergolas in our backyard and I can't wait to get started on those.
Our decking was in very bad shape after many years and needing replacing. We hired Julian, of Hammerhead Woodworking, to rebuild the deck and couldn't be happier. Julian was able to save us money while creating beautiful results by using our original deck design and structure and hand selecting the redwood planking. He was meticulous in his work and left the worksite neat and cleaned up. We cannot say enough about the quality of Julian's work. Jane and Carol
I LOVE my fence!! Couldn't have asked for a better carpenter. He did the most incredible job creating a horizontal fence using tongue and groove to eliminate any gaps in the wood. 3 years later I still receive compliments that it's the most beautiful fence they've have ever seen. He nailed the idea I had on Pinterest for a Dutch door. A dream really. Planning on asking him to help with a deck next! Honest, reliable and creative. Hard to find! Highly recommend!!

We are so glad we went with Julian. He's not only a great guy but provided excellent craftsmanship on our new gates and fence toppers. We went with mangaris wood with a penofin ipe colored stain and couldn't be happier! We got about 6 different quotes and not only was Julian very reasonably priced, he also knew what he was talking about! Which is a big deal when you're spending money on a new project. Highly recommend. Thanks again! read more

We needed new porch railings and short fence in the front yard -- something that would follow the simplicity of the house & meet our expectations. Over the years of maintaining an old 1940 home, it's always been a problem to find good carpenters. Either they're over-priced, do shoddy work, or don't finish in a timely manner. Many that even had good reviews were a disappointment! After a friend recommended Julian of Hammerhead Home Improvement -- and checking the Yelp reviews, we decided to give Julian a try. We were told that Julian gets emails faster than phone messages, so we emailed him to schedule an appointment to get a estimate and run our ideas by him. Always skeptical about hiring someone new - in spite of good reviews, we were completely taken aback by Julian's professionalism. He helped us plan what we wanted -- quickly drawing up the plans after measuring the spaces. Julian helped us to choose the wood in our price range, itemized the amount of wood and came up with an estimate that was more than fair. Julian actually finished the whole project in two days, working tirelessly with few breaks. (In spite the fact that he has a teething toddler and a baby on the way!) He's definitely "project minded" as his work reflects perfectionism in every detail. He even made part of the railing to fit where the porch was uneven with the side of the house. He was quick to find solutions to any problems that came up. His "old school" work ethic is rare these days. Now we know why there were so many positive reviews. Julian's the only one we'll call again for future projects! read more

Julian did a great job. We had purchased a house and when the owner (who had leased it back for 1.5 years) finally moved out we looked at what had to be done. The side and rear steps were poorly constructed with large gaps between the wood and we either would have to replace or repair them. Julian came over and we discussed wood options as well as the look I was going for (colour had to be close to the hardwoods inside so that the wood looked like it would flow), etc. It would be easy for me to say I was being very picky about the look I was going for. In addition, the side step would need to be able to have handles potentially put on it so it would be "movable" to allow for RV parking if the tenant had an RV, and we had just run the water supply under the old wood in the back, so we had to maintain that as a feature. Yes, I was a pain in the butt in terms of how I envisioned the steps looking. And Julian was able to see what it was I was looking for, able to make suggestions based on his experiences with wood, and was exceptionally helpful at putting the whole thing together in a single package. Pricing was negotiated and was well within the budget I had put together, even considering the final wood choices. Julian came over and started working while I was doing landscaping in the back, and he worked basically along side me. I had the opportunity to see his work in progress (not because I was watching, but because I was working on the landscaping where he was working on the steps) and see his work ethic. Measure, not twice, but three and four times, making sure everything was squared and that it came together tight before a cut was made. He was putting just as much care into the work he was doing on my property as I was putting into the work I was doing on my property. Julian knows wood. He has a talent for bringing out the best of it in his construction. As we have been showing the house to prospective tenants they have all mentioned the high quality of the work that was performed throughout, and that does include the excellent work that Julian completed for us. Would we use Julian again? Well in fact we did. I had a 45" space that I wanted to hang a door on so it could be a pantry. Since you can't get a 45" door that meant that one would either have to be shaved down or built. I called Julian again and we discussed the project. We made the determination of the wood, and I decided to hang the panel using four cabinet hinges. Because of the size and weight of the wood we actually worked together on this with me being his apprentice and taking his direction (it was huge and heavy and really did take more than one person to align and hang). Once again working with Julian was a very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend Julian to anyone who is even thinking of working in wood. The man is a true talent, as well as being a gentleman and very easy to work with. read more

Julian did a great job on our extended fence. We went back and forth via text message. I showed him examples of work I would like. I sent him measurements. He gave me a quote. He came over to finalize the project and that was it. No gimmicks. No fine print. We agreed and we got a great finished product. Julian is a master at his craft. This review was long overdue. We will definitely be using Julian for future projects. Thank you sir. read more

My wife and I were looking into building a fence in our front yard. We came across Julian's Hammerhead Woodworking business and sent him a request for a proposal. Julian contacted as shortly after our initial request and maintained communication to set up a time to take measurements and discuss design options. My wife and I sent Julian photos to give him some ideas and Julian was extremely helpful in guiding us in the right direction. Within days of our communication and requests, Julian sent us a detailed quote which itemized materials and labor cost. My wife and I felt extremely confident in hiring him to implementing our fence. Julian came in and completely delivered a beautiful fence, used high grade lumber and paid attention to detail. We would highly recommend using his services. You will not be disappointed. I will include a photo of the completed work as well. Thank you Julian! read more

We had Julian recommended from a friend and are really happy. Julian was quick to respond and provide a competitive quote same day. He was also able to start right away which we needed due to our old fence practically falling over. He was able to accommodate some special requests and we were very happy with the quality of his work. He truly does deliver a custom job at an affordable price. We are already looking at other designs and plan to give him first refusal. We recommend him to anyone who is looking for quality work from a trustworthy, easy to work with expert. read more

Very professional from start to finish! We stopped watering our lawn in response to the drought. Tired of looking at the dead grass, I thought I could replace it with a deck. I found a few contractors on Yelp. I hired Julian from Hammerhead Home Improvement because he listened to what kind of project I had in mind, gave us his expert recommendations, and worked with our budget. He is reliable, honest, and finished this 14' X 14' wood deck in record time. He cleaned up after himself leaving our backyard nice and neat everyday that he worked. We painted it based on his recommendation and now we have this beautiful place to entertain instead of dirt and dead lawn. read more

This is a little late, but wanted to make sure I got the chance to say that Julian did an amazing job on my deck!!! I was off from work several weeks recouping from surgery and was tired of looking at my ugly backyard. Scouring the internet for ideas and pictures, I designed a simple looking, yet modern deck. I called several area designers and had awful experiences with everyone except Julian! Most quoted me in excess of $5,000 and that wasn't going to happen. I called Julian and up front I told him I am on a budget and needed something very simple yet durable. Over the phone, we discussed options and a price. It was amazing how he showed up, I discussed my design, and away he went! Guy was done in less than 2 days. Cleaned up after himself and even put up with my dogs "visiting" him while he worked. This guy was a class act and I feel I got exactly what I wanted at a price that was not even the slightest bit ridiculous. I am planning on having him back to do some other projects I discovered are necessary!!! Much appreciated Julian!! Thanks so much! read more
