Having just bought a house that needed a lot of work done we had various contractors in and out of the house for the past couple months. We hired Julian to replace a rotting deck at the back of our house after seeing positive reviews about him here and on Nextdoor. He responded to my initial text promptly, and we scheduled an appointment for a look-see the very next day. He arrived to the appointment on time--which is important to us--and it was clear he knew his stuff. As we requested, he gave us three bids for three different scenarios, because we weren't sure we could afford all of the goodies we wanted. We thought his prices were more than fair, so we chose a plan, and we were off! Once Julian demolished the old deck, he told us which parts of the under-structure were sound, and which parts needed replacing. He also pointed out some things the previous builder hadn't done properly, but he very kindly did his best to correct what he could, so that our new deck would be done properly. He showed up every weekday at the appointed hour and worked hard until the job was done, and the deck looks GORGEOUS! We couldn't be happier. AND Julian is just a really nice fellow to have around. We liked him a lot. We're saving up for some more stuff, like a pergola and a fence, and Julian will be our go-to guy. We planned on fencing in our front yard for a couple of years. After many different quotes and proposals, we decided immediately, before even getting his official proposal, that Julian would be our guy. I contacted Julien(?) earlier (after work hours) to see if he was accepting new projects or even serviced my area and to my surprise he responded during his dinner time! He said he would contact me after dinner and he did! It was close to 10:30pm and he responded with the information that I had sent him. It's too bad timing didn't work out as we are in Nov and he will be out of town for the majority of the month which is when I would need for the fencing around my house to be up and completed. Julian did a great job. We had purchased a house and when the owner (who had leased it back for 1.5 years) finally moved out we looked at what had to be done. The side and rear steps were poorly constructed with large gaps between the wood and we either would have to replace or repair them. Julian came over and we discussed wood options as well as the look I was going for (colour had to be close to the hardwoods inside so that the wood looked like it would flow), etc. It would be easy for me to say I was being very picky about the look I was going for. In addition, the side step would need to be able to have handles potentially put on it so it would be "movable" to allow for RV parking if the tenant had an RV, and we had just run the water supply under the old wood in the back, so we had to maintain that as a feature. Yes, I was a pain in the butt in terms of how I envisioned the steps looking. And Julian was able to see what it was I was looking for, able to make suggestions based on his experiences with wood, and was exceptionally helpful at putting the whole thing together in a single package. Pricing was negotiated and was well within the budget I had put together, even considering the final wood choices. Julian came over and started working while I was doing landscaping in the back, and he worked basically along side me. I had the opportunity to see his work in progress (not because I was watching, but because I was working on the landscaping where he was working on the steps) and see his work ethic. Measure, not twice, but three and four times, making sure everything was squared and that it came together tight before a cut was made. He was putting just as much care into the work he was doing on my property as I was putting into the work I was doing on my property. Julian knows wood. He has a talent for bringing out the best of it in his construction. As we have been showing the house to prospective tenants they have all mentioned the high quality of the work that was performed throughout, and that does include the excellent work that Julian completed for us. Would we use Julian again? Well in fact we did. I had a 45" space that I wanted to hang a door on so it could be a pantry. Since you can't get a 45" door that meant that one would either have to be shaved down or built. I called Julian again and we discussed the project. We made the determination of the wood, and I decided to hang the panel using four cabinet hinges. Because of the size and weight of the wood we actually worked together on this with me being his apprentice and taking his direction (it was huge and heavy and really did take more than one person to align and hang). Once again working with Julian was a very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend Julian to anyone who is even thinking of working in wood. Julian is a "Jack of all trades". A couple of years ago he helped design and plant our native garden. He also built a huge garden box in the front that runs the width of our house. Oh, and he put in this gorgeous stone pathway leading up to our front porch that gets tons of compliments. Let's see...what else?
