I finally decided to bring in a Fillmore concert poster and another piece I wanted to get framed. The guy was really nice and carefully took out my rolled pieces out of their poster tubes, laid them out with soft weights, and measured them. Unfortunately, I didn't like the wood, finishes, or colors available for the standard Fillmore poster frames. They have a lot of options though. I was intrigued by by the floating frame for a painting but he seemed unwilling to give me a price estimate unless I was very serious about it. I think the prices posted for the non-custom frames aren't all that "cheap." I'll keep searching, but if money is no object to you then they have some nice custom options.

DO NOT waste your money here. Go to Michael's where it is 1/3 of the cost and the same quality of framing services. I've spent over $2000 at Cheap Pete's in the last 2 months alone (and much more over time). Most recent project was getting a custom frame for an old worn, but sentimental poster for a total of $826.64. There was a tear that it was unclear if they could fix during the process of mounting it on foam - instead of calling me during the process and letting me know that and asking if I wanted to proceed, they completed the frame with the tears very visible. Not only that, I called and spoke with Sonya -- the Manager -- simply to ask if they could help me take the piece out of the new frame so that I could touch up the tear with marker and put it back together. In spite of that hefty price tag, they have the audacity to charge me even more money to unframe it. Absolutely outrageous. For context, I had a similarly damaged print that I brought to them last year and they fixed it beautifully, which is why I believed the outcome would be different than what was given to me. At that time, they had even called me during the process to confirm how to proceed with the bends in the image. Very poor quality service. Very poor quality mounting to foam board. Very poor sense of loyalty to customers in the neighborhood who give consistent business. Very expensive and not worth it.

I received a nice poster of a lovely lady, and decided I go to Cheap Pete's to look for a huge frame. I'm sure it would look nicer if I let them mount it for me, but no.....I'll do it myself. Helpful staff, and I appreciate the tips. Nice selection, but I just wanted a plain black frame. End result, it looks nice.....at a fair price.

Helpful staff, however returning to drive 60 miles to request a trim of a $160 custom matting of a self made painting, was quoted to charge me another $160 on top of the $160 already paid. Not recommend.

The print I chose to have a custom frame made for. I'm In love with it!

One of the staff (an asian woman- didnt' get her name) was so nice to help me find the exact colors I needed and patiently explained the sales and discount pricing for the huge aisle of liquitex acrylic paints. Then when I got to the counter (albeit really overwhelmed by too many choices) Jayy was at the counter and smiled and was a calm beacon to my shopping anxiety and confusion - with only like 20? minutes left until closing time! She painstakingly helped me look at each of the colors my art teacher wanted me to get and helped me choose two paint sets that I could afford that met my criteria for both watercolor and for acrylics. Jayy sat there patiently scanning and calculating all the different permutations of paints and even gave me advice about what colors to get now vs maybe later when I save more money up! She even helped me maximize my discount and coupons. WOW. Jayy was so knowledgeable about the colors and types of paints I needed and this AMAZING experience was why I was SO GLAD I went iN PERSON to the store! thank you thank you Jayy for making my shopping experience so much less stressful!!!

The store was founded in 1968 and is the second oldest business in Japantown. Currently the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original co-founder, Nobuo Mihara, continue to run the store. [Parking]: There are two parking garages within a few blocks away from the store - The Main Garage (1610 Geary Boulevard) and The Fillmore Annex Garage (1650 Fillmore Street). Parking rate = $5 per hour from 12 PM to 6 PM and $3 per hour outside of those hours. I got lucky and was able to find metered parking spots near the intersection of Buchanan St and Sutter St (free on Sunday). [What to Expect]: The store has a really large selection of origami paper. In addition, it also carries 3D / 2D stickers, classic Japanese art prints, noshi envelopes, handcrafted pressed-flower cards, adult anime T-shirts, coloring / origami books, socks, stationery, fabrics for furoshiki, etc. There is also a sign stating "Beware of the Dog" with Moira (a 2-year old Irish Wolfhound) hanging out at the store. [Conclusion]: I am not sure if this shop is worth driving out of the way just to check it out unless you are a passionate origami enthusiast, but it is worth stopping by if you are already in San Francisco's Japantown. P.S. - Paper Tree used to have a sister store in Berkeley called Miki's Paper which focused on paper gallery and Japanese papers, but the shop closed after COVID.
