Custom frames are expensive, especially if you have art that you want to preserve (UV glass, etc.), so we were prepared for a bit of sticker shock. Based on an interaction I had today. I came in asking about a custom frame job for a large piece of original art. The front desk guy was cool, didn't know the answer, so brought out the manager. After waiting 10 mins, first words out of her mouth were 'What's up?' Told her what I was looking for and immediately quoted me $1500-2k. Somewhere along the way she burped, no joke. I asked the artist (whose work has shown at the Getty) and he agreed it should cost 1/4 of that. Not sure what's cheap about this place besides the customer service. read more

This is a great place. I have gone here a few times to pick up some pre-built frames. All the frames are great quality, and good value. Especially if you compare to ones online, yes they are a bit more expensive, but they are well built and local. This time, I went in with 4 different things to hang. I had I think, Ellie, help us out. She was the best, super friendly walked me through the options. Both expensive ones, and ones that are on cheaper side especially for posters. We got a custom mat for 2 posters, one was a 3 window cut out and one was just for one. It was just 30 mins and the mats were done and ready to pick up. This is my go to frame place. read more

As much as I used to be a fan of this framing establishment, I'm going to have to find someone else. When cutting a mat I asked if they could give me the scraps. I just needed two cuts to dimensionally float a poster in a frame. I didn't have a lot of time and although they have a policy I just don't agree with the policy. I've probably purchased thousands of dollars of frames here over the years. I have to say that's the final straw for me. They were very kind, there were no hostilities. I just don't want to do business with a policy I don't agree with. Think about it this way, if you purchase a 8x4 ft board at home Depot they will cut it for you. If you buy a custom cabinet your not going to get the wood scraps from the lumber that was purchased to make the cabinet. If I were purchasing a custom window mat for a frame that would be one thing. I was just trying to purchase a full mat board and have it cut to the dimensions I needed. The fact that they wouldn't give me the remaining portions of the mat that I purchased, that's ridiculous. I guess we all have to draw the line somewhere. For me personally, that line is feeling like I've been ripped off or stolen from. One caveat here for those who might read this and think that I'm being either aggressively pointed in my review. I've been shopping here for well over a decade. I also do my own custom framing so I can do what I need without them. If you need a frame and you're in a jam, this place might be of help to you. read more

If your policy is to stop taking custom framing customers 30 minutes before closing, perhaps it would be reasonable to indicate that somewhere on your website or somewhere in the store rather than have customers drive all the way down there for nothing. I finally decided to bring in a Fillmore concert poster and another piece I wanted to get framed. The guy was really nice and carefully took out my rolled pieces out of their poster tubes, laid them out with soft weights, and measured them. Unfortunately, I didn't like the wood, finishes, or colors available for the standard Fillmore poster frames. They have a lot of options though. I was intrigued by by the floating frame for a painting but he seemed unwilling to give me a price estimate unless I was very serious about it. I think the prices posted for the non-custom frames aren't all that "cheap." I'll keep searching, but if money is no object to you then they have some nice custom options. read more

DO NOT waste your money here. Go to Michael's where it is 1/3 of the cost and the same quality of framing services. I've spent over $2000 at Cheap Pete's in the last 2 months alone (and much more over time). Most recent project was getting a custom frame for an old worn, but sentimental poster for a total of $826.64. There was a tear that it was unclear if they could fix during the process of mounting it on foam - instead of calling me during the process and letting me know that and asking if I wanted to proceed, they completed the frame with the tears very visible. Not only that, I called and spoke with Sonya -- the Manager -- simply to ask if they could help me take the piece out of the new frame so that I could touch up the tear with marker and put it back together. In spite of that hefty price tag, they have the audacity to charge me even more money to unframe it. Absolutely outrageous. For context, I had a similarly damaged print that I brought to them last year and they fixed it beautifully, which is why I believed the outcome would be different than what was given to me. At that time, they had even called me during the process to confirm how to proceed with the bends in the image. Very poor quality service. Very poor quality mounting to foam board. Very poor sense of loyalty to customers in the neighborhood who give consistent business. Very expensive and not worth it. read more

Purchased a frame that had a thin paper picture behind the glass. Removed the cardboard backing then it took 30minutes of running hot water, scrubbing and scraping to remove the preinstalled picture. A small piece of scotch tape could have been used to hold pic in place resulting in a fast and easy installation of the picture I purchased the frame for. Why does Pete's use an abundance of super glue just to hold up a temporary pic?? Plain stupidity to place a paying customer through a time consuming scraping and scrubbing task just to prep a frame for use. The glass ended up cracking right down the middle just before I scraped off the last piece of glued on pic. A complete waste of my time, money, and energy on a small task that went downhill fast and ended up sucking big time! read more

Most of the staff was wonderful and friendly. There was one person (fem presenting but I don't want to assume gender) that was sort of abrupt and slightly rude in their demeanor. Aside from that.. we ordered a custom frame job which took three weeks (no big deal there) but unfortunately something went wrong when inputting the code into the computer for the warehouse or something because the frame wasn't the correct one. For over $200 I just couldn't accept anything less than a re-do with the frame swatch that I chose with a store clerk, and I felt bad with how firm I was being with the person helping me with the issue, but they agreed to fix the mistake at no charge (although they did not want to initially, they wanted me to pay for the more expensive frame that I had thought I was getting in the first place). I'm the end I got what I had ordered, but getting there wasn't super simple. I understand it wasn't their intention to mess anything up, but the extra time and inconvenience made me give this place four instead of five stars. These folks did an incredible job for me. First and foremost, they sell excellent frames at excellent prices--as well as all the accoutrements: quality nails, tapes, mounting materials, borders... all of it. But, for custom work, they are capable of amazing things. I have a one of a kind piece from Bob Pollard (GBV!) with more art and a signature on the back. They were able to photograph the artwork on the back and mountie on the back of the frame--then mount the work with a shadow that's brilliant. A phtoo is forthcoming, but the review has to come first. Last thing: the managers are amazing. If you have a concern, talk to them. Sometimes the staff--though they do their best--can make mistakes. But the mangers know their stuff and know for certain how to make mistakes correct. They've earned my loyalty. read more

I've been meaning to frame two prints that I've had for more than a year, but always felt like the whole process was cost-prohibitive. Last weekend, I walked my prints down to Cheap Pete's. He was nice, helpful, not too pushy, and very friendly, as was the rest of the staff working that night. Cheap Pete's has a number of policies that are unfriendly and unncecessarily strict. For example, I spent a few hundred dollars on frames and asked if I could use their paper cutter that no one was using for a few minutes to trim a photo that I was planning to put in one of the frames I purchased. I was informed that no, I was not allowed to use the paper cutter, because it is against their policies. I then asked if I could pay them to do the cutting that I had planned to do as I needed to get this task done asap. I was then told that they would charge me $40 to cut 1/2 inch of my picture and that it would be a two week wait. REALLY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! read more

Almost taken advantage of. Recently I went in to get a poster framed. I am out of my skill set and experience. Yet this store was highly recommended. I told the associate what I had desired and the bill came to be under $400. He said that wanted to provide high end, museum quality glass, two mattes, and a very basic black frame. This was hundreds of dollars over budget, yet I paid. I didn't feel peace, yet I knew that framing was expensive. That evening some close friends convinced me to retrieve my piece. That Monday I went to Cheap Pete's and retrieved my piece. Before hand, I asked why the project cost so much. Then I discovered that the glass alone was over $120 for a $12 poster print. This second associate broke down the costs, and I discovered that I was being charged with the high end options of the mattes and glass yet a fairly cheap frame. The next day I took my piece to a competitor. They did the following: (1) asked me what my budget was (2) asked me my vision of the piece (3) informed me of the principles utilized for mattes and frames and how they relate to the image of the poster (4) offered options and informed me how that would effect my budget. Bonus: in the first 30 seconds with this new associate, he gave me a solution that cost a mere 15% of Cheap Pete's project proposal. Two words: fresh meat. read more

I went in this store to buy to things a small frame for a picture and a large post frame. As I shuttled back and forth for 10 minutes between frame binds, first because I picked the wrong size poster frame and second becauseI could not translate the correct size from CM to inches for the picture frame. None of the 3 workers came to ask me if I needed any help. I decided that I would buy the poster frame and the workers were happy to take my money-one finally taking a break from her conversation about landlord tenant problems that had earlier consumed them . Cheap Pete's really came through post re-locating back to SF. My partner and I had a bunch of artwork that was not yet framed, and we were looking for a store that was not too distant from Lower Haight. A quick search on yelp yielded Cheap Pete's! Voila! Somehow I had never heard of Cheap Pete's, but after a little research learned it's actually a chain. This relieved my concerns a bit, because to be honest, you can't tell from the name what kind of experience you're actually in for. Arriving at the store, it's a simple, but well-organized presentation which was much appreciated. Frames are grouped by size, and they seem to have pretty much every size frame you would need. They even have the Fillmore poster sized frames! There are usually a few different styles to choose from for each size, though don't expect anything ultra fancy. When they say "factory outlet", that's certainly in line with the types of styles available. But we were pretty easily satisfied with some basic black and natural wood styles. If you have non-standard sizing needs, or want something a bit more unique, it looks like they also do custom framing. All in all, very nice to have this available in this part of the city, especially given the lack of Michael's in SF proper. read more

I went to this frame store thinking they would possibly have the frame I need. Having to ask someone for the type of Frame in mind was an absolute disappointment!!!! Not only he and she didn't see me to my eyes, didn't try to listen what my need was, but they kept an attitude of saying: get out! Why don't need your money!!! Sad that there are places like this one, they should improve or disappear! I went in there this week to find two frames that I needed. In my dealings with the staff, I found everyone to be friendly, knowledgeable about their stock, and courteous. As it turned out, one of the frames that I bought was not a good fit for the canvas I had, so I needed to return the following day. If you are an amateur just framing family pictures . . . you are crazy not to go here. Best deal in town. But if you are a pro . . . avoid. You might get sucked in by the great prices for large-format frames like 2' square or 20" x 30" But guess what you will not see beneath the packaging? The large-format frames at Pete's have no mounting backing. So you have to make your own, or bring the big frames back to Pete's where the staff will cut pieces of foam core to fit their pre-built frames -- for $23 each. And although Pete's has a commercial cutter beyond what most studios possess, Pete's staff can't even cut a piece to fit the large-format frames they sold you for $23 per frame. Please see the attached photos of how I had to mash their foam cores into their own frames because they were so sloppily cut. So after years of patronizing this location, I have not been back -- and do not plan to go back.
