After several years of kicking a custom frame job down the road, I finally decided to buck up and get it done. I looked around my neighbourhood to find a place nearby since it looked like my regular store had shut down. I couldn't find *anything* nearby but Frame123 wasn't too far out and looked near where my previous store was. I texted the shop owner and while it took a few days to get an appointment set up, it was entirely reasonable and within the same week. I headed on down at the appointed time and imagine my surprise when I found that this new shop was located in the exact same spot as the previous shop I used to go to! When I walked in, I recognized the owner as the same guy (and he asked me if I'd been there before as well). Apparently this new shop is the same guy, same stock, everything as before, except new name! I was so happy because I've loved all his previous work before and the prices are good. I spent some time with the owner, working through different mat and frame options for the two pieces I brought in and between his opinion and my tastes, we got both of them worked out pretty quick. I'm still waiting to pick them up (but it's only been a week and well within the estimate I was given) but I trust that they'll look amazing. Definitely head here if you want some amazing custom framing done that's well worth the price. read more

The shopfront doesn't seem like it's open--but don't hesitate to text or e-mail the shop to arrange a time for drop off and pick up! Peter, the owner of Frame123, is a master craftsman who takes great pride in his work. He did a fantastic job on 6 paintings, 2 of which were half to three-fourths the length of a wall. These were floating frames around oil paintings. Peter was able to provide me the paintings on a rolling basis, approximately one to two every two weeks. At the very end, he was incredibly considerate and even helped deliver to me the largest paintings, which otherwise would have been difficult to transport in my personal vehicle. Would definitely return! read more

Peter Ong is a detail master! He has framed everything in our place and I won't go anywhere else to have something framed. He has a strong point of view on what looks best so it's both enlightening and reassuring to work collaboratively with him. His pricing is fair and he is a nut for details. He does all the work himself to ensure you get the best quality. Peter's ability to deliver is impressive too. He has turned things around for us in 24 hours and also taken on longer term projects. Most recently Peter took on a really challenging project for me. I collect Italian comic books and he custom built a frame to house my 72 favorite books. He dreamed up the structure of the frame and then built it to perfection. It was incredibly detailed work that involved sawing, sanding, painting, more painting, gluing, and mounting. He did a fabulous job and even came to our place to install it! I feel the final product is truly a work of art. I highly recommend Peter for your entire range of framing and installation needs. read more

Frame123 - The Books Installed - Framing Near Me - San Francisco, California

My wife and I wanted to get a large photograph professionally framed. We took it to 4 different frame stores in the city, asked about options, and got estimates. Peter Ong, the owner of The Great Frame Up, not only spent a huge amount of time being very patient with us while we picked through pretty much every frame he has in the store, but he outdid the competition in the following ways: 1. His prices were cheaper, for the exact same materials, by anywhere from 10-30% 2. Most places had only one type of high end glass, called museum glass, that had both anti-glare (looks like there is no glass there at all) and 98% UV protection. This glass is VERY expensive. At most places, the next step down is conservation glass, which still has UV protection but no anti-glare. If you want the anti-glare, you have to go with museum glass. Not with Peter. He has an amazingly clear anti-glare glass that isn't 98% UV protected. It has around 50-60%, the same as standard glass. But if you aren't going to hang your photo or painting in direct sunlight, you probably don't need the 98% protection. And if you do get some fading, as long as you took the photo, you can always just swap out the print for $10 or so. At the very least, it's nice to have this option. 3. Speed. Peter framed this large photo for us, with matte, glass, mounting, and frame, in LESS THAN ONE WEEK. No rush charge, in fact we didn't even ask him to do it quickly. But he said he'd try to get it done by father's day, and sure enough, he did. We will go back to Peter for sure the next time we need something framed, and you should too. read more

So, I'm sitting at work bored out of my mind on a Monday. How do I remedy this? I decide to enter an international photography contest just because I can, and what the hay, I get chosen. Now the gallery wants me to mat the photo and frame it in all these specific dimensions with no glass but maybe plexiglass or a plastic-acrylic hybrid and a certain shade of black wooden frame and all these other ridiculously specific demands. So what do I do? I Yelp. I Yelp my ass off. Peter really does live up to the hype of his perfect score. Not only is he the most competitively priced (I called A LOT of frame shops), but his relatively lower prices do not show up in the quality of work that he produces. Seriously. I have never seen a mat cut more perfectly. Immaculate. I should know - I went to architecture school. A lot of mat cutting in those places. Peter even gave me a few pointers on framing and art exhibit etiquette. If this whole photography stuff takes off, I am definitely looking forward to working with Peter exclusively just because he is honestly a good guy and I really do believe in the whole pay it forward and random acts of kindness stuff. Really, I do. read more

The Great Frame Up is AWESOME. Peter is really easy to work with. Here's some info about this place when compared to local competition. Price: This place is REALLY CHEAP. The local competition wanted to charge me hundreds more for the same job. Quality: The work I had done here looks AMAZING. The local competition? So bad I had them start over again. Speed: Each piece I brought here took approximately one week to complete. The local competition takes more than two weeks. Location: Right near Van Ness and Union. Really easy to get to with the 47 or 49 bus. Is it obvious yet? You should definitely take your framing jobs here. read more

We were looking to get a unique piece of art that we got from Nashville framed and because of the great reviews we checked out The Great Frame Up. When we arrived, the person there was very friendly and was easily able to walk us through the various options and offer his feedback as well. We had looked at a few other frame places but ended up to go here. The prices aren't cheap but the quality is good. Our frame took longer than the 3 weeks we were told and unfortunately no one ever called to tell us this. The frame was on back order and didn't come until after the three weeks which we were disappointed in. They gave us a bit of a discount and the work was done very well so they were able to redeem themselves. read more

I just collected #2 of 6 pieces that I am having framed here. What can I say, it may be January for everyone else, but it is Christmas every time I go in there. To start - picking out a custom frame for your priceless pieces of work is beyond fun. Peter is great - patient with your umming and ahhing - and helps you along to make your final choice. My first two pieces look amazing as a result. Price-wise, I can't comment, as I haven't framed work anywhere else, so I have no idea, but personally, with the service and the results, I say it is worth it worth it worth it. I did spend a hefty amount in total, but Peter was willing to work with my finances as well - which was incredibly helpful to me. Finally, when the framer gets as excited (or more) about framing a particular piece - it's simply enthralling. Said piece is now on my wall (what is it you ask? Well, it's a man carrying a whip in a sort of Legend kinda way - framed beautifully in this antiqued wooden frame which compliments the sepia tones of the print - the frame has signed and sealed the image entirely). My first piece was framed within a day or so (even though I was told it would take a week) - and I said that there was no rush on the last 5 pieces, as there really isn't - 2nd was completed within a week. I can't wait to see the next ones when they are ready! read more

I've had more than a dozen pieces framed by Peter at the Great Frameup for my home and several dozen awards, certificates, and photos framed for clients. I wouldn't take my pieces anywhere else. Pete is not only friendly, patient, and reliable, his prices can't be beat. If you're working within a specific budget, don't be afraid to tell him up front. He'll help you choose the mat and frame that work for your budget and complement your piece. Pete and TGFU are fantastic. read more

Mr. Ong was great to work with. No up selling here! I had a couple pieces of artwork framed to liven up and white walls and it was a breeze. Compared to his competitors, it's a bargain for the quality of work. He asked what kind of frame i was looking for and begin to allow me systematically see what they would look like framed. Being the typical bachelor that I am, i went with a simple rounded black frame (No matching black leather couch tho!). I can't wait to spot new pieces on etsy to frame :) read more

The Great Frame Up is a wonderful place to go for quality service at very reasonable rates. Peter Ong does a stellar job. I needed a picture fixed that had been hung in the bathroom and had fallen, cracking the glass. Mr. Ong offered to refit the picture with new glass, and even sealed the back side to prevent moisture from seeping in and onto the print. Grand Total: 23 bucks. He also set an unusually sized print (11"X26") on a very attractive black and gold frame for $70. Grand Total: less than $100 for 2 quality frames. The turn around time for the entire job was less than a week. Kudos to the TGFU staff; I'll definitely be back when I need something else done! read more

They are so helpful and do such great work! For my wedding I had a gift custom framed as a gift to my father and ended up having a fairly tight turnaround for the work. They knew how important it was to get done and made sure to meet the deadline. Will always come back here for any custom framing needs. read more

It was my first time having anything custom framed and I was surprised how expensive it was. I went to 4 different frame shops and received bids only to find Peter was not only the best in customer service but had a good price for the quality and service I received for my first custom framing experience. He was patient in showing me the different styles of frames and backings while other frame shops just kept asking me what I wanted without giving me suggestions that would compliment my piece. I also felt rushed with the other businesses where as Peter took his time showing me options and styles. He's a good artist! I will definitely be back for all my custom framing and would highly recommend if you're looking for quality, good price, and great customer service! read more

I've been going to Peter at The Great Frame Up for 5+ years. He's done about a dozen pieces for me. His quality is excellent -- he does the work himself. What's particularly helpful is that Peter helps you pick the best frame & mat combination for each piece. He's willing to sit with you for 20 minutes talking through the options, showing you exactly what it will look like. And he voices his opinion, gently-but-firmly. For a non-artistic person like me, this is incredibly helpful. He's really patient -- "Peter, can I see that mat again? What about with that color frame?" -- and most importantly, he's really *enthusiastic* about helping each piece shine. He's also very practical about pricing -- if adding that extra inch of mat is going to double the cost, he'll let you know and help you keep it on budget. Tips ==== - If you're hanging anything in the bathroom, Peter will add silicone gel sealant at no charge. This prevents humidity from getting into your art. Just remember to tell him since it's non-standard. - Non-reflective Museum glass is an option I always struggle with. It's about 5x the price of normal glass, but you can really see the art better. I've only selected it on the one piece of "nice" art I have. Regular anti-UV glass is fine for everything else. - If you need a piece done by a specific date (e.g. a birthday), let him know in advance, and he'll deliver. read more

Peter is the best, without question. I am borderline OCD with respect to details and the 2 framed pieces he worked on far exceeded expectations. Will be a return customer. read more

Dropped off three items to be framed and paid for them half up front. I was looking for a little help with all the frame options, since they do claim to have the largest selection in the city (and its a little overwheling). After a few suggestions I made my choice and now have to wait 2-3 weeks for my pieces to be framed. To be continued... read more

I went in based on the good Yelp reviews and was really impressed with how Ellen made some preservation suggestions for the drawing I brought it to replace the glass I had broken. The drawing was from 1922 and was done by my grandmother, so I was glad to learn about acid-free paper for the mat and ways to prevent the drawing from yellowing and eroding. The price was really fair at $46 for a new mat and glass and treating it. I look forward to picking it up. read more

I needed a quick and perfect frame and Peter came through in less than 24 hours. He educated me on plexi glass vs glass and helped me pick colors for the matting and frame. Great service and Great price! Plus, Peter offered me a couple Chinese restaurant suggestions as well....a true full service frame shop! read more

I've been a steady and good customer of Peter Ong's and agree with all the positive reviews regarding quality craftsmanship, good service and fair prices. I'm sorry to write that due to not discussing a critical decision Peter ruined a $12,000 photograph by cutting the artist's signature off the mat to better position it in the frame. Discuss all aspects of the job before leaving the shop, even things in your wildest dreams you couldn't imagine anyone doing. read more

The Great Frame Up is amazing. Peter is extremely knowledgeable, kind, helpful, and gracious. I had a large photo/poster matted and framed (my choice of both) a few months ago. I then decided I did not like the matt I had selected so took it back and selected another. When I went to pick it up, Peter said NO CHARGE. Who ever heard of such a think??? His response was "if you are not happy, I am not happy" and refused to take any payment. I have referred several friends to The Great Frame Up and will continue to do so. read more

This is a great place! Helped me to pick the frames, matting, and glass (while explaining the different costs to me so I could decide what was worth paying for and what wasn't). And he was also really helpful in getting the items framed within a deadline. He was easy to work with and friendly. I appreciated his quality work. I believe he's also a bit cheaper than other places (without losing quality--important!). read more

I picked Frame123 because of their perfect rating. So glad I did! Just picked up my painting today. Couldn't be happier with the job done. Pricing was very fair, selection was awesome. Highly recommend! read more

Peter has framed about 10 works of art for us so far and he has done a great job every time. Besides the fact that he's a master framer, he's also very good at helping you pick the kind of frame that goes with the work of art, the color of the mats that enhance the work of art etc... I know my framed artworks wouldn't look nearly as good if he hadn'd advised me. Gallery owners and collectors trust him with their pieces. He also hires and trains a very competent staff. I highly recommend this place. read more

I had recently framed a print before i moved to san francisco and had it shipped here by UPS. They heavily damaged my print during shipment and had to get it reframed. The print was in such disrepair that i was snubbed by a few other frame places before I walked into The Great Frame Up. I explained what happened, asked if it could be framed just for sentimental value. Not only was it framed beautifully and at a great price, but he restored the print as best he could with no extra charge! I would highly recommend getting anything framed here. read more

I just had about 8 pieces of art framed here and I loved the way they turned out! Peter was super helpful (spent over an hour with me, picking out the mats, the frames, the glass, etc etc) which was great because I've never really had things framed, so I was quite clueless. I just got them back and they look beautiful - each one! They took exactly as long as he said they would & I thought the price (for framing) was reasonable as well. I will totally come back! Thank you Peter! read more

Sometimes web sites make it 'look better than it is'. In this case - in person is better than the site and the site is pretty awesome! Peter was amazing as was his team mate (whose name I didn't get - I apologize). I brought in a pastel painting that I had unfortunately damaged the edges and another piece I just came home with from Paris. My place looks like a pied a terre, which is exactly the look I was going for. The museum glass on any piece - a must! The communication was incredible. The education amazing - I had no idea about the 'beading' or 'trim' that was available to put inside a frame to add depth and color. It was just an incredible experience and I had high hopes for when I returned - and was beyond impressed. And, as if there could possibly be more positives - they completed the pieces early so I could have them up on the walls for a NYE dinner party. Above and beyond. Worth every penny. It was an incredible experience. Thank you. I will be back shortly with my third piece and look forward to you working your magic TGFU team. read more

Peter was SO incredibly helpful and nice when I brought in my painting! He knew exactly what would look best for my charcoal painting, suggesting a floating look in a gorgeous frame and black matte for a sleek, simple and modern look. From now on I will bring all of my paintings to Peter - I wont go anywhere else ever again! read more

Peter at TGFUSF is a solid guy who delivers quality products and services at a very reasonable rate. Don't let the modest storefront fool you. I've used him for a few antique prints and tapestries and he's always met or exceeded my expectations. read more

I'm reviewing this so I can remember it for later =) I went here at least a couple years ago, but the service and price was top notch. Custom framing and matting for a longish hand-painted poster was very reasonable. For work I'll often go to an old Japanese man in the financial district. He does a great job, but I would say it's safe to say it's double the price of The Great Frame Up. read more

I'm still waiting for my piece but Peter the owner gave me confidence my large art piece was in good hands. He told me my options, didn't try to up-sell me, was very reasonably priced. They seem to high quality materials and I saw some finished product in the store and they looked superb. I will no doubt bring other framing projects here. read more

Nothing really new to add other than this is a great business and Peter is absolutely top notch. A total pro about his work and his customer service and just a real friendly guy. I've had a number of pieces framed here and every one of them has come back looking just downright fantastic. If you need to get something framed in the Bay Area, I wholeheartedly going to see Peter. You won't be sorry. read more

I can't thank Peter enough for his patience, advice, hard work, skill and speediness. About a month ago I had to get some pieces framed quickly for a show in New York. A certain disaster happened with my original pieces and I had to use older drawings of mine to show instead. Even with the microscopic time-frame, Peter still was able to frame and even pack them so they were ready for shipping. I went to the reception at the gallery just last weekend and was so happy to see how beautifully my works were framed. Thank you Peter! read more

Hands down best framing services in the city! Everywhere else is a total ripoff and doesn't use the same care that the owner of Frame 123 does... I needed a print framed that was a standard size, however, I couldn't find a frame that I liked online or at any retailers. I was surprised that so many other shops quoted me outrageous prices ($300+) for something you could buy at a retailer for under $100. The owner at Frame123 was a joy to work with and gave me a great price for such wonderful work. I'm already looking forward to getting more prints framed here! read more

I am delighted to inform all that read this that Customer Service is not dead after all. Having the need to address two pieces of hanging art that were atrociously framed, we ventured into Peter's shop. There we confronted a man that proved to be uncommonly knowledgeable and helpful. He knew his inventory. He listened to his customer's likes and dislikes. He quickly pulled together his recommendations based upon not only our input, but also his obviously experienced eye. In record time we had our solution. Within a few days we had our newly framed (and expertly so, I must add) art back in our hands. If you need good framing, see Peter. Anyone else is second best. read more

Peter is a godsend. He's more than a first-rate craftsman. You can rely completely on his recommendations for type of frame, color, treatment.
