Great great great place in Lander! Service at the bar was good, restaurant was very busy on a Tuesday night and unable to get a table but the bar was great and available. Atmosphere overall is very nice. Brussel sprouts and Ahi appetizers were amazing, definitely recommend. Steak was delicious and cooked perfectly but the side was disappointing sorry to say, was looking forward to wilted greens and instead was served with a hodge podge mix of soupy beans and various veggies. Only reason for 4 over 5 stars was the side and that they do not offer wine by the glass for the most part? By the bottle is certainly an option however by the glass consisted of whatever they already had opened, only able to choose from 2 reds that day and not good vineyards at that. Would be great if even a smattering of by the glass options were added to the menu.... read more

I had the rainbow trout and loved it. I also had a flight of beer which was fun with generous portions. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because my dad ordered a New York strip steak and was very disappointed. He admits to being fussy about steak, so not sure if this is a completely reliable opinion. Come here if you are in Lander! read more

We showed up with no reservations by the staff worked us in. Busy place! The food here is wonderful! The bread is hot and has a perfect crust. The pale cheese burger was cooked to perfection. The blue cheese dressing for the wedge salad Wes creamy and sharp. The ribs fell off of the bone. To finish off the carrot cake was outstanding. read more

We had an amazing lunch. Nice selection of greens for the salad that included roasted corn and pumpkin seeds. The marinated pork with red chile was an added bonus. We had chips and guacamole too. Everything was very fresh. Beer from lander brewing was very good. My daughter had watermelon lemonade which she went back for. Defiantly will return. read more

First of all this was a really good meal, and the service was pretty darn good as well. The food was seasoned perfectly, and the sides delicious. I have to kick on a couple of things though. One being that I have never cut more gristle from a New York strip steak in my life. A little more QC in the meat selection is needed, trim that and use it in the steak tips, or grind it, don't use it to represent the quality of your steaks. Secondly, my steak was underdone, and I like my meat on the rare side, so I am not one to whine. This was the "gunpowder" New York Strip, and was still very tasty and I enjoyed it. My wife's Salmon was also very underdone, which leads me to believe someone was rushing things in the kitchen. The place was pretty busy, so noisier than I prefer, but a good restaurant nonetheless and I would eat here again. So three stars on the strength of their sides, and originality, but not quite up to the fourth or fifth star due to cooking and meat quality not living up to the price charged. read more

I don't like to be the nay-sayer of the reviews, but I've lived in Lander for a long time and the Cowfish is not what it was. It still is a good choice, but their menu hasn't changed in a long time and some things that used to be included (small salad) are now extra. They've lost some of their innovation, although the decor is trendy and it's still a fun place to hang out. I just wish they introduced more new dishes like they did when they first opened. I've been back a number of times since my last review and was kind of hoping things would change, but no. I think they depend a lot on people who eat here infrequently or tourists just passing through. read more

When we came to this restaurant, we were on a road trip going to Salt Lake City. We were coming from Cody, and we were hungry!! The lady at the bar sat us down, and we ordered the strawberry mint lemonade for drinks. ABSOLUTELY REFRESHING!! For entrées, we ordered the chips and guacamole, beef tacos, a beef burrito, and a beef salad. The tortillas were home made, and excellent!!! However, the tacos, and the meat on the salad was a bit salty.. The burrito was good!! The size was right, and the attitude was nice!! Definitely give this restaurant a try whenever you are in Lander!! read more

I have been horribly frustrated by poor service and mediocre meals at restaurants for a long time. Today I realized why. I haven't eaten at Cowfish before. I had one of the very, very best meals I've ever had. I'm talkin' top 5 here. I had the Spicy Coffee Dry Rub Ribeye and it was Spot On Perfect! Add roasted fingerling potatoes, broccoli and crispy fried leeks and bring me a never-empty glass of fresh brewed iced tea and you just made my day. Our server, Tesla, was impressive with her ability to be there when needed and she was more impressive with her ability to "not be there" when not needed. Extraordinary service and a brilliantly prepared and presented meal. Home run, friends, outstanding meal and outstanding service made for a memorable meal. read more

I live in Lander, and while Cowfish is easily one of the best places to eat in town, I truly think it is not living up to it's potential. For the prices, I am disappointed in the quality and freshness of food, and the general details that are put into the establishment The food here is definitely not cheap, yet many dishes or elements of dishes are Sysco style (desserts especially, eggrolls, etc), and do not taste like they are made in house. In my opinion, a locally owned establishment where entrees are $22+ should be taking the extra time and effort to make all dishes by hand with as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. Plus, there are numerous good dishes, but I have never been blown away. Lastly, when I walk into a dining room of a (wyoming standards) upscale restaurant, I am not impressed to see multiple broken lamps hanging from the ceiling (isn't it dangerous to have broken glass face height?) If the owners of Cowfish put some love and care into what they are presenting, Cowfish could truly be a great local place. read more

A very pleasant meal with quick service. Coming from Portland I am used to very good pub food and cow fish did not disappoint. The beer cheese burger was delicious in the pub food. The cheese was mild and soft and went great with the bacon and quality beef on the burger. Would definitely go back! And this month they had a promotion on bogo breakfast. read more

We orders take out meals and while the food was good, it cost too much for what we got. Four meals with no drinks added up to $92 and the fries were chincy, skinny fries that were cold. The drive back to our hotel should not have cooled off our fries that much. If we had had time to complain we would have taken the food back and said something, but it was already late, we were starving and had an early morning. We were disappointed. read more

We are from near San Francisco so consider ourselves pretty savvy foodies. What a wonderful delight this place was! Totally one of the best wedge salads we'd ever had anywhere, and my Pork shank mole chile verde was an A+ and probably could have fed a family. Top this off with amazing brown ale from the Lander Brewing Co. and it was one of the best meals of our trip. read more

We ate here during our one night in Lander on our way to Yellowstone. We picked this place because of the proximity to our lodging for the night (Holiday Lodge within walking distance). The service was prompt and friendly. The portions were what you'd expect from a typical American establishment. There were lots of choices on the menu although not a lot for a vegetarian. However, this is Wyoming. We are not strictly vegetarians but we also don't eat meat often. I ordered the grilled Mahi Mahi tacos w/ Jasmine rice. My husband ordered the buffalo burger w/ blue cheese and my son ordered the kids burger & fries. My son decided he wanted cheese on his burger. Our waitress gladly went back to the kitchen to get him cheese. Our food was very good and filling. We were never w/o water or our beverage of choice. In this case it was a beer from the brewery for my husband and I. The beer is good. A good selection for light beer drinkers. The Rye is good but I preferred the Pale Ale. It has a hoppy smell but is not overpowering in hoppy flavor. This is a very nice place to eat & drink read more

From the start I had apprehension regarding this establishment. From the moment I walked in it was clear that I was not welcome in this restaurant. The hostess and servers acted if it was a chore to serve me and if it was May fault that they messed up my order. If that wasn't enough they had the audacity to imply that it was my fault that my order was wrong. Then they proceeded even more coldly after that point. I really enjoy the Cowfish but some things have changed. The food is, on the whole, good. The wait staff is not all as good and well trained as they used to be but they are trying. The special side veggies used to be prepared tastefully, asparagus or broccolini grilled with olive oil and garlic, etc. but they are totally tasteless now. If ordering a steak medium, better to opt for medium well. They are always under cooked and sending them back gives you the same result. Given all this, it is still the best place to eat in both Lander and Riverton and all places in between. One definite downer. The noise level can be terrible on a busy night, even in the dining room. Something should be done about the acoustics. read more

I love this place! I forgot to post my review the other day. My mom and I went in for her annual birthday dinner. It was Cowfishes annual March madness special(Bogo on entrees) we had a reservation and expected it to be packed and it was. We waited along with other couples for around 30 minutes. No biggie there wasn't an empty table in the house. The problem was there was no one at the front counter to acknowledge the customers for at least 15 minutes. So anyhow we got our table and had fabulous service! Alcohol came quickly from the bar appetizer (the mushrooms) which by the way are to die for came out hot and fast. I ordered that nights special which happened to be a stripped Sea Bass. It was beyond delicious! Cooked to absolute perfection! Mom had her usual beer battered shrimp which was also fabulously cooked to perfection! Now back to the service. So I can't help but notice a man in suite working here presumably the manager(?) walking around all night doing NOTHING. This is the same man that was absent from the front counter for 15minutes when we came in. There is probably 3 servers running their tails off giving great service maybe one busser cleaning tables (these ladies were rocking it) and here is this man standing behind this server watching her enter her order into the computer with a look on his face as if something she was doing was wrong. I watched this man stand in the hallway looking at a try full of drinks from the bar that need served. Clearly this man doesn't belong in the restaurant industry. What a surprise on "the main drag" in Lander -- that earlier we thought showed no promise of an interesting place to eat! Thank you Yelp! Brew-lover husband liked the beer taster -- & more of the one he liked the best. The Pub Menu was our choice & my Korean tacos were yummy. His burger and the brews made him a happy man. Passing through on the way to Yellowstone and didn't expect to find a 5-star meal in Lander. 8 oz,. filet as tender as we've ever had (and perfectly cooked, topped with a butter sauce and bleu cheese), flatiron steak with a chipotle-lime sauce and black-bean-and-corn relish (and I could have licked the plate), and a ginger-citrus crème brulee as good as that dessert can ever be. Do not show up early as they do not open for service until five and by ten they close and everyone goes home. As I was passing through today and wanted to get a growler refilled with one of their handmade craft brews I stopped by just after four. The front door was unlock and a few staff were inside. The first gal I came to was at the reception desk and I asked if I could get a growler refilled. She said we do not open until five. Again politely I pushed that i was just passing through town and inquired if she or one of the other staff could fill it up. She said I would need to wait for the bartender and he usually arrives just before five. My family and I had stopped in a few years earlier and got some wonderful food and service but clearly they have had some changes since then. read more

this establishment is way overpriced and overrated. i ordered the sirloin steak med rare, with the schrimp kabob and garlic mashed potatos. the steak was overcooked and cold, the schrimp were way over cooked and ice cold and i did not receive garlic mashed potatos but something else that was actually quite good. it seems the restaurant is trying to be a big city trendy eating establishment and it is still is run by small town folks. If they would loose the attitude, charge reasonable prices ($10-$15 for their entrees) and offer small town friendly service, it would be a 5 star restaurant. This place is a find! I sat in the Lander Brewing Company side of Cowfish----so two choices for ambiance in this place.....the brew pub side and the finer dining side with the same kitchen. The spinach salad was the best I've ever had....it had heirloom cherry tomatoes, toasted hazelnuts, warmed smoked bacon that was oh so good, dates & a honey mustard vinaigrette....good news people! Joe the barkeep made this mad scientist drink that was delicious and scurvy free I believe...it had lemons and limes, ginger and basil...I believe it had Grand Teton potato vodka and it was a party in my mouth...loved it! I chatted with a local at the bar and he recommend asking the server to go easy on Gun Powder Dry Rub so you can taste the Awesomeness of the Ribeye...glad I did....because it was cooked Medium rare like I love it and was the real deal, the roasted fingerling potatoes and crispy fried leeks rounded out the meal.
