I was curious about this place due to its TMNT style art on its storefront. Finally stopped in and got a slice. Very small storefront with seating outside, this place immediately was doing a good approximation of a NYC pizza by the slice place with a ton of variety of slices on display. I ended up getting the splinter which was a cheese slice with a variety of cheeses on it. The execution of my slice was delicious although it was a little pricey. But the 7$ slice was pretty generous and unlike certain pizza by the slice places who just give you a huge bad slice of pizza for your price, this place gave a decent sized slice that was delicious. Really solid NY style pizza. I stopped in here after reading reviews and was super pleasantly surprised. Now to be fair it's not Chicago style pizza BUT it's not supposed to be. So for anyone in the neighborhood belly aching about that in particular, give it a rest. Bridgeport has a lot other offer the city but too often so many refuse to change and welcome the new kid on the block. The world is changing and so is the city and so are neighborhood tastes. So let's roll with it. Why not right? I've never been a huge fan of NY style pie but I enjoy it on occasion. That's just me being, well, me, a loyalist to Chicago pizza (which not for nuthin' is NOT deep dish). That said NY style done right can be really good. I'm always suspect when it comes to pizza so naturally I was about Cowabunga. But after reading plenty of great reviews I had to walk a few blocks over and try it. First off it's a true 'neighborhood joint' in that it's situated on 31st street and it's tiny with a few cool picnic benches out front and it offers that happy neon glow a neighborhood joint should. The from of the building is fun and obviously pays homage to the iconic Ninja Turtles. That's fun. Step inside, and it's a whole different world. The Turtles own this joint and the kids should love it! I sure did. It made ordering pizza fun as well. Decorated with plenty of Nijnabilia and other cool memorabilia. Gotta love it first sight. The display case has a nice offering of various good sized slices some old school others super original and all looking great. You can tell this pie doesn't sit long at all. The employees are fun too. The counter fella I met turns out he's literally the new kid on the block. Bandy from Arkansas has been in the neighborhood like a few days only and walked in to Cowabunga an wallah, git himself a gig! Gotta love a guy who wants to work and isn't afraid to put himself out there. His service skills are excellent and at all of 21-22 years old you can tell he's been in the service biz for a while now. Enjoy living in Bridgeport Bandy and welcome! I tried two slices,, The Donatello and the Leanardo. Both really really solid! Plenty of flavor in the crust which is huge and the sauce if right on point. The Donatello was my favorite, not better, just I love the garlic and that's a hit on this one. Both were large sized and as I are then I thought about trying another but I was stuffed from the two slices. I gotta tell ya, the reviews were right, Cowabunga Pizza Pies is right on! I hade a good chance to meet the owner John. A cool cat originally from Hawaii I think he said. He's part of the neighborhood for sure, and he brings flavor and a new thing that is much needed. You should stop in and pay a visit to John and welcome him. He's been around a while but I know how hard we can be on new comers and not always as inviting as we should be. I've driven past Cowabunga! Pizzeria so many times, and today I finally decided to stop in. We happened to be in the area and got there right as they opened. The moment I walked through the door, I can tell this place has a personality of its own. From the name alone I knew I was in for something fun, and inside it's a full-on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme. Toys, collectibles, old-school memorabilia, video games... everywhere I look there's something cool to notice. The owner was incredibly nice too and made us feel welcome right away. There were so many pizzas to choose from, but one immediately caught my attention, the Street Shark. Pepperoni, pineapple, bacon, green peppers, jalapeños, and garlic. Sweet, a little meaty, and straight-up heat. I had to try it. And what a slice. The first thing that hit me was how well all the flavors worked together. The pineapple brought a juicy sweetness, then the pepperoni and bacon came in with that rich, smoky, salty flavor that balanced everything out. Just when you thought it was all sweet and savory, the jalapeños kicked in with a nice heat that slowly built up without taking over the pizza. Every bite was different, but somehow every topping belonged there. The crust had a great texture, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I'll definitely be coming back to try more of the menu. Cool little pizza shop in Bridgeport! I've been meaning to stop here for a while so when I was on the Southside one day I took advantage. It's a small space decked out with Ninja Turtles and retro 90's posters, games, etc. It was pretty busy when I went when it opened but the folks working moved quickly to get everyone their slices. I ordered a slice of pepperoni and a slice surf slice. Both were delicious NY style slices and they had others that sounded good. The owner and I chatted a bit and he was super friendly. Tried Cowabunga! Pizza Pies in Bridgeport and it's such a fun spot for kids. Huge NY-style slices packed with flavor for around $8-9 a slice. There's only a couple picnic tables outside, so maybe not ideal for big groups, but there's a park nearby which makes it easy with kids. Found this place on TikTok and knew we had to stop by before our White Sox game since we'd be in the area. We were delighted by the atmosphere filled with nostalgia. There was so much to look at! The slices in the case were also quite the sight to see! There was a great variety and my group was able to try a few. The names were great and most of the slices hit the spot. I quite enjoyed the crusts and I usually give mine away! The staff was friendly and answered any question we had and gave us suggestions, like the garlic sauce. GET THE GARLIC SAUCE. Truly amazing. Don't expect to eat inside if you have a big group or small children as it's just a counter top. There are two picnic tables outside though. Tonight I came I by and there was a few minutes left on my pizza. Chatted with the main guy there about old movies. He pulled my pie out and wasn't satisfied- felt he toasted the crust too much. He tossed a new crust and put it in and gave me a slice from the one he wasn't satisfied with while I waited. It was excellent but I could tell what he meant - just a tad dry on the crust. As someone who has grown up in the Bridgeport area(with tons of great pizza over the years - Lina's, Ricobene's, Phil's, etc) - it's refreshing to get a different style of pizza in the area. This NY style pizza spot is small, although it is very cool with the ninja turtle theme, the large variety of pizza slices, and the extremely friendly customer service. Today I got two slices(one cheese and the pepperoni/sausage). The pizza is fresh, very little flop + great crunch, the ingredients all work well together. For two slices of pizza cost around 15$, which is fair - nothing is cheap anymore. I love the small outdoor sitting area, I love the effort put into the interior, and I'm looking forward to coming back to try more. Seeing as this is on 31st street, parking should be manageable although I had to walk a block + to find parking - no biggie :) So whether you're in the Bridgeport area or visiting for a white Sox game, or just want NY style pizza in Chicago - definitely worth your effort to come out and check this spot out! read more

Great new pizza spot that just opened in Bridgeport, just down the street from Maria's on 31st. It's been a welcome addition to the neighborhood, specializing in NY style slices, to compliment the more traditional Chicago pizza style places that are already in the area. They have a wide variety of topping choices, with various meats and sauces and vegetables on top. I've tried 4 different ones so far, all really good. While the inside is small, it's filled with a ton of 80s/90s nostalgia, from retro video games to VHS tapes to other cool decorations on the walls. The owner is very cool and friendly, and seems like this was definitely a passion project of his to start. The only downside is that it's only open half the week. Hopefully as it grows in popularity it will be open more days. Will definitely become a regular here! read more
