    Courtyard Marriott in Merced, California.
    Wulfstan C.

We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott in Merced recently when visiting relatives. It appeared to be a nicer option than anything else in the area unless one wants to splurge more and stay at the refurbished El Capitan downtown, which this quick trip did not call for. That assessment seems correct. The place is not very interesting or characterful, but is nice enough. The room was nice, comfortable, and clean. There is a reasonably nice lobby with a small bar and eating area, plus a lounge sitting area. The bathroom was pretty nice and the shower worked well enough - although I'll always complain when there's no hand-held shower head option, as was the case. I acknowledge that it is rare to get one in the US but keep hoping that will change since they are very common in so many other countries. The beds were comfortable. There is an indoor pool, which was nice, although in the hot weather, it would have been nice for it to have been a little cooler. The staff seemed friendly and helpful. At the bar, they were happy to serve us even though they were just closing down (although the drinks were not good). Takeaway breakfast food there was quite good. The location is in a typical freeway-side area which is rather scuzzy. It is not a nice walk to downtown or anything else. However, it is as easy to drive and from downtown, which is not far away, just too far to really want to walk in that area of town. It does the job fine and I'd have no problem staying here again if staying in the area for a short visit, unless I really wanted to be downtown at the El Capitan. In other circumstances or a different town, I might give this 3 stars, but for here, and the options, all things considered, the nicer aspects move this up to a 4 for here.

The best service ever! I love how nice and clean the hotel is. The best part of this was the pool! I just loved everything about this hotel. Sonia at the Bistro bar was Amazing! Her service was just over the top! Her food was just amazing and because of her we will be coming back here every time!

Pull out bed was really uncomfortable and I was bit by bed bugs but the service was good and the food surprisingly delicious for a hotel.

Let me put it this way; it's a "bistro" in a Courtyard hotel on a street named "Motel Drive" in Merced. Manage your expectations.

When I arrived, Evelyn was so welcoming and took care of my check-in. She also gave me a rundown of all the hotel's features. My room was spotless and tidy, and there were extra towels, just like I asked for in the app--thank you, Luz! The gym is great and open 24/7, so I could get my workouts in during the mornings. The breakfast was also delicious. Thank you, Kit. The area was well-kept, and she even helped me with the waffle maker. As someone who doesn't eat pork, I was hoping for a turkey or beef option for the sausage. That's my only gripe. One evening, I went to the lobby to grab some snacks and met Stephanie, I think that was her name was. We chatted for a bit, and she even suggested an ice cream cup snack, which was fantastic! Our conversation went so well. She was such a lovely person to talk with. The postcard with the QR code to tip the staff is a nice touch, and I made sure to tip everyone I met. I didn't see Stephanie on the list, though. Thanks to everyone for making my stay so enjoyable. Keep being such wonderful people!

Big mistake, this place looks nice when you get in but when you get to your room. It appeared nice (mind you I had been driving all day and only needed a place to crash and shower before I continue my drive.) Mattress sinks, thought it was very comfy lol and pillows were great. So that's a plus. Later I went to the restroom...the shower was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!! Soap scum so thick on the glass doors, which okay soap sucks but then I opened the shower and the shower pan was even worse!!! It's as if people with gross feet had paraded in there and they never washed it for years. Needless to say, I couldn't shower and I feel gross. Then I go down to breakfast. Grabbed some cereal, the fridge only had a ton of chocolate milk and no cereal milk. I asked the desk, they checked and they're out...how do you not have milk?! One of the ladies suggested I use chocolate milk if I'd like. Went to get some sausage, looked over cooked and dried the heck out. I don't know but this is not how I remember Marriot representing themselves. This was quite a letdown.

The front desk was extremely short staffed with one person trying to check-in four parties, and the check in process took a long time, mainly spent waiting in line. Our room was not cleaned yet, so we went to an early dinner. When we came back after a leisurely meal, the room was ready but lacked a refrigerator, requiring us to move to a new room next door. My sister pulled the bedspread back, sat down, and immediately started itching. There were short black hairs all over the bottom sheet; my sister has long, blonde hair. We notified the front office, and they immediately sent housekeeping out to change the sheets. It took several hours for the room to cool down, even with the air conditioner cranked up as high as possible. The barn bathroom door did not close all the way, which was unfortunate as we had three people sharing the room. (We're sisters, but come on... some things are private.) Additionally this second room had no towels, and the bathtub was absolutely filthy with black marks all over the bottom sheet. There was no fire alarm in the room. I requested a call from the hotel manager as he/she was not available when we checked out. A woman called me later, saying she was a manager. She told me that our $120 stay would be refunded; (Unfortunately, I did not write down her name.) I also received an email from Kay Dhaliwal (Manager) which did not mention any refund but acknowledged my concerns and thanked me for my feedback. Days Inn did indeed refund me $120, but then charged me $120 TWICE on my card. Since I have nothing in writing documenting the promised refund from the property, I have no further recourse other than to leave reviews. I sent an email back to Ms. Dhaliwal requesting a follow up on the promised refund, but have not received any response. DO NOT RECOMMEND! DIRTY! Poor management and housekeeping!

We were towing a trailer and given permission to park along several spaces since they had many rooms empty for the night. Our room was quite clean. Nothing to report out of line. The worst of it was the air filter for the air conditioner smelled of cigarette smoke. Thankfully, we had a can of air freshener and just hosed it. Overall, the place wasn't bad. The people in the neighboring room left me wondering if they were trying to sell drugs out of the parking lot. Every time we stepped out, there was anywhere from one to three people at the back of their vehicle. Traffic noise wasn't bad. Actually, there was little to no freeway noise and it was far enough from the city Street that you didn't really hear much go by. Would I stay here again? Probably.

Apparently this company is like so many other American companies these days: they love to take your money, but their overarching goal is to give the customer as little as possible in exchange, including little (if any) pride in workmanship or service. The one positive thing I *can* say about this place is that the entire front desk staff, with the exception of one young man who referred to me as "boss," was very nice; however, if you need to reach the front desk from your room, good luck getting them to pick up. (Note to all young men: as I have no employees, nor any DNA test telling me otherwise, I am neither your "boss" nor your "bro". Therefore, please do not refer to me as such, because it's *very* unprofessional and disrespectful.) As for the facility: there was a burned hole in my sheet (the maids can't see a hole 8" from the upper left corner of a fitted sheet when they make a bed? really??), forcing me to sleep on a washcloth because the edges of the burned area were hard and crusty and were scratching against my back. The left end of the towel rack in bathroom was very visibly lower than the right side (are towel racks really so tricky nowadays that they can make their installer look like he's working under the influence?). Paint on bathroom wall & ceiling was peeling--A LOT. No stopper in sink. The breakfast bar was understocked a full half hour before it was supposed to close. And when I came back to my room at 2:30pm, the maid was still cleaning the room 3 doors down from mine (she never even bothered to knock to *see* if I wanted my room serviced--that means no clean towels, no *nothing*; and no, I did *not* have the "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging outside). Now, I realize no one from corporate, nor the franchisee of this property, gives a damn about what I've said here because all this could have easily been prevented or corrected before I was assigned my room... IF they took any pride in their product (which is why I didn't bother reporting it to management--if *anyone* knows about the lousy shape this building's in, they do; obviously, no one cares ). So I kinda think of this review as my equivalent of the free night's stay (I only stayed 2 nights) I deserved but would never have gotten had I complained to management (because I've dealt with these kinds of people before---I'm on vacation, and I'm simply not going to waste my time getting upset with people who care less about their product than I do). I believe this is the first time I've ever stayed at a Quality Inn; and I'm not anxious to repeat the experience. "Quality" comes in levels, and this "quality" was right down there with Motel 6. They should really change their name to "Good Luck Inn," because the "quality" you're going to get is a complete crapshoot (unless, of course, this is typical of *all* their properties, in which case they should just change their name to Motel 6 and be done with it). Makes me glad I can't afford to go on vacation more than I do.
