This is not a 5-star hotel, nor does it try to be. I give it 4 stars for convenience, not luxury. It feels like it's trying to be an affordable place to stay in Merced while still making the experience as comfortable and appealing as possible. The price is right, and during the week you'll probably see a lot of people staying here for work. The rooms are clean, and overall, everything feels like a fair match for the price. The one thing that has bothered me is the coffee machines in the rooms. The last two times I've stayed here, mine didn't work. The good news is that you can get a free refill at the Starbucks downstairs, so it's not a huge deal. There was also an incident involving someone being arrested during one of my stays, and I honestly had no idea it was even happening until afterward. The hotel handled it quietly and didn't let it disrupt everyone else's stay. Things happen... what matters is how they handle them. If you're staying here mainly for Marriott points, I'm not sure it's worth it unless you stay here regularly. I don't stay enough to get much value from the points. The gym is small but functional, and there's also an indoor pool. For a work trip, you really can't go wrong here. It's affordable, clean, convenient, and gets the job done. read more

Adding this review because this experience was extremely concerning and I don't feel like it's been resolved. I would like to know this if I were thinking of staying here. We stayed here in June and experienced harassing and intimidating behavior by staff. Management response was limited. I am listing the more egregious issues here. We had connecting rooms and no door stoppers, the rooms did not have key access to one another so when the door closed unexpectedly, we got locked out. It was early morning so the door latch was still on from night before. I was in the connecting room with my kids when the Maintenance man opened the door. He notified us by swinging the connecting room doors open twice without knocking. I was surprised because we hadn't gotten an ETA for resolution but super grateful and in a rush. I said thank you, thinking thatd be it. Turns out it wasn't. The maintenance man had to be pushed out of my door way because he had been told by the "manager" Priscilla that I was "pressuring them" when I called to ask for a time estimate for the service so I could get my kids morning medicine & other belongings or make other plans. The maintenance man stood in front of my door, looking at me intensely, and said "it's her ? She's the one pressuring us? We don't have to do this (unlock the door).." I said thank you several times before realizing what was happening then told him I didn't pay to argue as I was pushing the door he was blocking to get him out my room. Priscilla was in the hallway and asked if I had gotten corporates number then Scoffed when I said no. He didn't budge until I put my phone up. I wasn't sure if I was going to record or call 911. I notified management and corporate by email, informing them every detail and that there was also a sink not working since our arrival the previous night but I was uncomfortable getting it fixed without coordinating w management first. I was so uncomfortable, I didn't want anyone in my room, I was uncomfortable that they had access to my room (and personal information). Despite my request to coordinate the fix, They sent housekeeping without notice. While housekeeping was in the room, I also received a call from Priscilla who informed me not to email mgmt but only ask for support at the desk. I told her I didn't feel comfortable, and she proceeded to argue that she had been "realllyyy nice to me" then hang up abruptly after I told her this conversation was inappropriate. We didn't get a response from management until we had decided to check out a day early later that evening. And it confirmed our decision to do so. There was no reassurance that we'd be left alone, but an offer to a free dinner at the restaurant in the same lobby as where Priscilla worked. It was incredibly insulting and there was no way I trusted a meal from this place. Upon checkout we also found that communication to the later staff had been that we had refused service, implying we were being difficult, not that the staff was being inappropriate and unprofessional. Marriott is a hospitality company but this experience was so below the bar I am still shocked and uncomfortable. I wasn't looking to be wowed, just not end up entirely disturbed. They could have just *not*, but it seemed that they went out of this way to create this experience. While we received a refund and a case closure email citing the free meal, the experience was still not okay and I don't think it's been or will be resolved at this point. I'm still shaken weeks later. Can't imagine what could have happened if I were alone in this case, shorter or more timid. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. read more

When I first checked in, I thought that this was a good choice: +Nice room, clean +Good food @bistro But the more I stayed, the more problems there were -Front desk worker was often away from the desk talking to friends or coworkers. This happened both when I checked in and when I checked out. -Sliding glass door latch broke But +maid worked really hard to find something to block the door from opening -bistro was advertised to be open to 10pm or 10:30pm, but closed at 9pm. OMG this place is the best for Merced. They have a few rooms with HUGE bathtubs and nice TVs. Feel like Tony Soprano or Montana or TONY THE TIGER! ESSSS THE BEST!!!! We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott in Merced recently when visiting relatives. It appeared to be a nicer option than anything else in the area unless one wants to splurge more and stay at the refurbished El Capitan downtown, which this quick trip did not call for. That assessment seems correct. The place is not very interesting or characterful, but is nice enough. The room was nice, comfortable, and clean. There is a reasonably nice lobby with a small bar and eating area, plus a lounge sitting area. The bathroom was pretty nice and the shower worked well enough - although I'll always complain when there's no hand-held shower head option, as was the case. I acknowledge that it is rare to get one in the US but keep hoping that will change since they are very common in so many other countries. The beds were comfortable. There is an indoor pool, which was nice, although in the hot weather, it would have been nice for it to have been a little cooler. The staff seemed friendly and helpful. At the bar, they were happy to serve us even though they were just closing down (although the drinks were not good). Takeaway breakfast food there was quite good. The location is in a typical freeway-side area which is rather scuzzy. It is not a nice walk to downtown or anything else. However, it is as easy to drive and from downtown, which is not far away, just too far to really want to walk in that area of town. It does the job fine and I'd have no problem staying here again if staying in the area for a short visit, unless I really wanted to be downtown at the El Capitan. In other circumstances or a different town, I might give this 3 stars, but for here, and the options, all things considered, the nicer aspects move this up to a 4 for here. read more

I came here for a conference we hosted at UC Merced. I came to check in at 2am on October 17th. I was not feeling well and came to check in. When I arrived to the front desk and a man in his late 30s was there at the time. He was rude when I said I was coming to check-in and he didn't pay no mind. I gave him my ID and he said no I don't have that name here and completely ignored me. I wanted to lose my mind because our company had booked over a dozen of rooms for our colleagues there. THEN I had to pull up an email showing my email with names he knew booked the hotel with my confirmation number email and had to ask him to PLEASE check the confirmation number I had. He then changed his attitude and finally treated me like a normal person. I literally gave this guy my ID and didn't double check the key cards that had my last name on there!! I would not come back because it's crazy for someone to judge me based off of me wearing my pajamas and hoodie at 2am. I've been to more hotels that are luxury hotels and did not have this problem. read more

Stayed here as I was attending a funeral nearby. The morning of my checkout approximately 9am I hear the vacuum turn on outside my door. It stayed on until we left at 10:30. When we opened our door to leave, we noticed the vacuum was on and laying on the ground right next to our door. Housekeeping had left the vacuum on and laying right next to our door for an hour and a half!! What a nice way to start an emotional day. read more

the pool at evening time was really really nice. The air in the pool room was toasty and the water was just right!! There were two shallow depths at 3'6 and 5', so that was very pleasantly safe to relax in. Great service and clean rooms. We had a very roomy suite and the indoor pool was clean. I also got into the Jacuzzi.

The staff was pleasant and very accommodating. The room was clean and the shower had great water pressure . The only downside was the bistro was only open for breakfast. When I stay in Merced again, I will stay here. read more

The internet wasn't working on my tv yesterday evening. The gentleman at the front desk went above and beyond to get it working. Nice place. I wasn't really sure about the neighborhood, but I didn't have any issues. The rooms are nice. The front desk staff was very friendly. There was a little area to buy snack items and convenience foods. There was also an open dining area near the lobby. I didn't check out either so I can't speak to the prices or items. The room I was assigned was ADA compliant on the first floor with a roll in shower. There was also a spa tub in the room, next to the bed. Rather strange, I thought. The walls are thin...I heard the TV going all night long in the room next door. Bed and pillows were very comfy. There was an indoor pool, exercise room and a computer work area, too. read more

My room, cleanliness, amenities, etc., were all overshadowed by the ineptness and rudeness of the supervisor on duty upon check in. Aron (or Aaron) was the supervisor. Prior to my arrival and at the time I made my reservation, I contacted customer service and stated to them that I was traveling with a coworker and putting the room charges on my corporate card. I stated I would not arrive before my coworker and wanted to ensure my coworker had no problems checking in. I was asked for my coworker's name. I provided it. Customer service responded that there would be no issues with him checking in before my arrival. Nothing more was said. I thought all would be ok. The day of arrival, my coworker arrived and was told he could not check in until I checked in with my credit card. He called me. I called Customer service and explained what was conveyed to me. They contacted the hotel and were told by the supervisor that I was given incorrect information and that my coworker could only check in if he presented his personal credit card. That was not conveyed to us prior to making our reservation. The supervisor was rude and unwilling to look for any alternative solution. I even offered my credit card over the phone and Aaron had the audacity to ask me to fill out and send in a credit card authorization form, while driving in my vehicle. That was not only ridiculous and patronizing but just rude. My coworker waited in the lobby for two hours for me to arrive. We asked if we could cancel our reservations and get a refund to go down the street to a more accommodating hotel chain. We were told no. This was probably the most ridiculously bad service I've ever received in my travels. Absolute indifference to the customer, that paid in advance, with a corporate card. Absent any intervention from Marriott Corporate offices, I don't see us, or any of my coworkers staying at any of their locations again. There are more customer friendly places to stay, other than Marriott locations. read more

Came to Merced to visit after being gone for 30 years, and decided to stay here for the 3 days of my trip. Currently staying here and so far i don't really feel unhappy or unsatisfied. The room is spacious, the beds are super comfy, loving the round love seat where I can sit and edit my work, and the traffic noise doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it soothes me to sleep, as I like some sort of background noise when I sleep. Couldn't hear much over the AC anyway. Staff is friendly, lobby is nice and there's an area to sit and watch tv on the big screen. Forgot my toothbrush and even when I was out and about, I forgot to buy one. I called front desk to see if they had a convenience store where I could purchase one, but they ended up giving me A complementary one along with a small toothpaste. In that moment, Marriott saved my life LOL. It was 9pm and I was soooo tired and not in the mood to go out and get one! I don't know if all hotels have complementary toothbrushes? But it sure was nice that this one had them! I do wish they had coffee makers in the room buuuut, the lobby had a bistro and morning menu so I didn't even have to leave the hotel (that makes me sound lazier they I actually am. Ha.) anywho - convenience! And who doesn't like that? I requested some sort of a "view" (I know, not much of a view) and they gave me a room with a balcony which I love. Don't care that it faces the freeway or that there isn't really a view - I love stepping out here at night and having coffee out here in the morning! The only con I suppose is when I arrived, my bathroom sink stopper had been pulled up and there was dirty water in the sink with I don't know what, floating around. Bits and pieces of something. There had been a used hand towel on the counter as well. I think it's imperative the rooms are tripled check during this whole pandemic. Due to the nature of my career, I've had to travel quite a bit. This being said, Marriott is typically a top choice of mine when it comes to booking a hotel. Upon checking in, the person who helped get us checked in was friendly and helpful. The room we received was somewhat outdated, but it was in good shape, so it didn't bother us too much. What we weren't expecting was the amount of noise from the nearby highway. I've stayed overnight in major cities across the country and the noise level was nothing compared to the noise level at this hotel. We were only able to sleep for an hour or two. It was BAD. I don't know if it's the windows or what, but it was not what I'm used to when it comes to Marriott properties. If you're planning on staying at this property, I recommend bringing earplugs. read more

Okay so I came here for a quick bfast before work. I ordered the bfast sandwich w bacon and I added tomatoes. It was good until I had to pull out of my mouth a long black hair-and I have blonde hair so this one wasn't mine. Yuckkk! I was suddenly full. I didn't say anything to the wait staff... The menu doesn't state that the bread is a croissant or that it comes w a side of fruit. They should change this so people know. It also doesn't state the prices which I don't like. Minus the hair the food was good. And the food came out quickly! They serve Starbucks so I got a white mocha. Everything together was $13 something but I'm not sure what costed what since the receipt I was given only had the final total, no breakdowns... read more

A truly disappointing and offensive establishment. The front desk associates in the morning (Jacob Kleinen and Breanna Lambert) can't help but talk poorly about the hotel guest and management! I understand management isn't the easiest to deal with but, when you're apart of management (Jacob kleinen the Assistant General Manager) it's downright disgusting. The bistro staff were very generous in assisting me with another hotel down the street, Towneplace suites by Marriott, which was spectacular. Simple, clean hotel that does the job. We stayed here for one night while driving up to Tahoe and needed a place to stay and get some shut eye. It was already past midnight so we called the front desk to check on their availability of rooms with two queen beds. The friendly receptionist said they had that available and were available for walk in. Once we got there we were promptly checked in. The room and bathroom were clean and looked modern enough and had just right, minimal, amenities. We stayed in the room facing the freeway and although we heard noise it was as expected. I used the white noise app on my phone to cancel out some of the noise and it was fine. Overall, this was a good choice when needing some rest during a long drive. read more

My Boyfriend and I stayed there this last weekend stayed Saturday and Sunday. We checked in Saturday no problem. And went on our way to our room. About 5pm I used the restroom and heard voices outside the door. I come out to find my boyfriend on the phone saying a family just came into our room into the phone talking to the front desk. My Boyfriend said that while I was in the bathroom he was sitting on the couch watching tv and the door opens and a family walks in. We waited a while to see if the front desk would call us or stop by the room. Nothing so my boyfriend goes down stairs and they just apologize to him. He comes back up and his room key doesn't work, my room key doesn't work either so he had to go back down to get them reactivated. I can't believe that all they said was a sorry. Those people could have had covid infecting our room. We could have been indecent. They could have been dangerous and hurt us and the best they could do is I'm sorry. The next day we went out and came back and guess what the room keys weren't working again. This hotel was just one mistake after another that they didn't make right just said sorry. They could have took some money off of the room or something but nope all you get is an I'm sorry. read more

I have used several hotel chains and Marriott has always been good. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful and our room was clean. I also loved the later check out time as some hotels force you out at 9:00-11:00. They had a complementary breakfast that was good enough and the pool and Excersise room looked nice enough (although we didn't get to try it). I did like the smell of the shampoo and conditioner, but I have also had better. I do have two caveats as they don't use disposable cups or have complementary coffee/tea/hot chocolate like other Marriott's. I don't care how clean those glass cups and mugs look as I have seen the report that showed most hotels don't clean their cups to safety standards. We did spend money on the vending machines and I had a water bottle with a filter built in. I really recommend a filtered water bottle to anyone that travels if they have the room. read more

Clean, large rooms. Comfy beds with all the amenities for a basic stay. Helpful, friendly staff and they are located right off the 99 fwy, central to most of Merced. They have a Starbucks/Bistro located in the lobby which had great breakfasts available for a charge. read more
