A short walk from the courthouse on a sunny day! We were coming to the courthouse seafood restaurant for lunch, but stopped by here first. My visiting mother was so impressed by the seafood in the shop, that we bought a whole fish to eat at home instead. The fillets are very decently priced at 11.99 for steelhead salmon and 14.99 for Arctic char, while the whole fish options were even cheaper. They had branzino, tilapia, swordfish, and really delicious looking shellfish as well. You can order fish to be cooked in the restaurant for an extra $3 per pound. Outstanding food, unpretentious atmosphere, good prices. This isn't a "fancy" 5-star restaurant, but the food sure is. The restaurant itself is casual, and quite busy. Nevertheless the clerks were friendly and helpful. Now the best part: my lobster roll ROCKED. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, just a good old fashioned lobster roll, overflowing with fresh chunks of lobster, and only just enough mayo to hold it all together. They may not be sheriffs or lawyers or judges, but the folks at Courthouse Fish Market rule the neighborhood in East Cambridge. When the line of fish lovers at New Deal down the street was just too long for this impatient person, I stopped in here for the first time. Since then, I have been back many, many times. So moved. I do the blue fish test at new fish stores because if the blue fish is fresh, then they are a top notch fish store. I happen to love the strong flavor of blue fish, but it must be very fresh. The best is when it is right off the boat, cooked over a grill with a little mayo, lemon and salt and pepper. Not only is the bluefish at Courthouse Fish Market delightfully fresh and delicious, so is everything else. They have a huge selection of fresh fish. Objections overruled. There are so many options here at Courthouse Fish Market, and the guys who work here are pleasant, easy going and helpful. Sustained. Having the two best fish stores in town within three blocks of one another is one of the best reasons to settle into life in East Cambridge. I'm Japanese. I barely eat sushi at a restuarant because most times it's not the freshest and best quality... So when I want sushi, sashimi or some fresh seafood, I go here. My mom goes here too. They have fresh tuna, yummy scallops that can be eaten as sashimi for a price that no restaurant can beat. I could pay 7 bucks and buy a pretty good amount (like 2 person dinner to eat with rice). But you always have to remember that if it doesn't look fresh you don't have to buy anything. They usually have fresh tuna but on the rare occasion of when they didn't I've turned around and said not today with a sad face. (but ask if they have anything in the back too) read more

My mother-in-law is from Galicia, Spain, where--believe me on this--they know their dang fish. She lives in the Southwest now where she cannot get a fresh fish to save her life. (Not that her life is in danger--really, she's OK people, she just loves fish, alright?) She visits us about once each year, and each time, she INSISTS on coming to the Courthouse Fish Market for her seafood paella, pulpo (octopus), calamari, sole... you name it. She even takes their bacalao (salted cod) back home with her in her suitcase. Cooking up seafood bought from this market is the highlight of her visits. (For all of us!) And the staff are very friendly to her, even though she speaks no English. By now, in fact, they recognize and adore her. Oh, and the prices are reasonable. Mussels, lobster meat And anchovies - large and small. Prices are all reasonable for the quality provided. Precut, post cut. Fresh aNd frozen. I bought steamer clams here as it was on the way back from New Deal Fish Market, but when I got home I discovered the clams stank like sewage and all were opened and non-responsive. I tried to wash them thinking maybe it was brine or something but all the clams floated in my bowl. First of all, I want to say that the fish here is top notch. I have always been happy with the quality of the seafood we've gotten here, and the other gentleman that works here (short grey hair, glasses) has always been professional, straightforward and helpful. This is mainly a customer service review. A younger Hispanic man that also works in this fish market has often made me feel uncomfortable by being a little, well, creepy. I just want to buy some fish. Light customer-servicey conversation is of course to be expected, but on a few occasions they've gone in a direction that's made me (and my boyfriend!) uncomfortable to the point that we no longer patronize this place. We miss the fish! This employee first started speaking to me when he confused me with another Asian woman-- ANYWAY there was weird staring happening, even when my boyfriend was with me.. and it just became unpleasant overall. Unfortunately. Apparently being Asian can get in the way of getting good fish. At this place. Again, I'm disappointed. I have to pay Whole Foods prices again. FML. So again, product: great. Today I went to buy fish for the first time at this market as normally I dine next doors at their restaurant. My mom was with me. We stood there looking at the people behind the counter for 5-10 minutes and surprisingly no one was noticing us although we were ready to order. Then finally I excused them and one person said to me that someone will attend me shortly. Ok fine, I finally grabbed their attention although it is odd as there were only 2-3 customers in the market. What was even worst came next. A woman walks in the market and she immediately was asked BEFORE me although the guy had told me that someone will attend to me. I IMMEDIATELY left as it was not just embarassing for me but also was my elderly mom. We are happy we tried this restaurant. Soft-shelled crab was fresh and larger than usual and was on a bun. The Haddock Fish & Chips dish was excellent and one of the best we have had and pretty reasonable at $8.95. read more
