We really wanted some chicken fried steak and chicken and we'd eaten at the Cotton Patch Cafe in College Station so we decided to try it out here. The service was good, they were really busy when we first got there but it slowed later and things god really good. The sweet tea was really good and I could not stop eating those darn rolls. We must have gone through three baskets. The corn muffins were good but those delicious hot rolls were just just to good to miss. Both the chicken fried chicken and steak were very good. The mashed potatoes went well with them and the gravy had a nice flavor. The other sides were good and the overall dining experience matched our expectations. They have a large menu, so everyone in your group should be able to find something they will enjoy. read more

Our food was excellent, and plentiful. The restaurant was very clean. Our server, Rhianna, was THE BEST !!! She knew the menu well, and checked on us often. We couldn't have been better taken care of. The Chicken Fried Brisket is great - especially with their Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce !!! We live 100 miles away, but I see a Specialist there. I received a gift card and went to use it. I ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes. The chichen was cooked just right, firm and juicy. The hot rolls and butter topped off the meal. They came out to our car and we paid via card and upon return with the card, she brought us fresh dinner rolls. This restaurant is new, clean and well staffed at the moment. The food was decent but a little greasy for my taste. We had the fried mushrooms that are battered, not breaded which has an odd taste. The BLT sandwich is huge and probably the best one that I have ever eaten and we then finished with Dr Pepper cake which was delicious. My friend and I went here for lunch to try something new. We split the fried green tomatoes appetizer and they were delicious! After that I got a lunch combo of the strawberry salad with some amazingly tender grilled chicken and the chicken and dumplings soup. The salad was soooo good but the soup could have used a little more spices. We finished off with mamas butter cake and it was so unbelievably rich. When we were getting our checks, the manager came over and gave us both a goodie bag with a salt and pepper grinder and free appetizer coupon. Definitely coming back! read more

I had the most wonderful visit the other day. Fast efficient and friendly service from Monica and an attentive manager. The food came out fast and was hot and delicious. I had my favorite crispy chicken salad with honey mustard dressing. Everyone at our table enjoyed their entrees. We sat and talked for over an hour afterwards and never wanted for anything. Monica never let our drinks get too empty and cleared our table quickly. It's not jUst a great restaurant but a great place for old friends to get together and reminisce. My son and daughter went there on Saturday for their special birthday lunch. We were seated right away. The chicken fried steak was on special for $5.00 for their Birthday. However, after getting our steak, it was tough as could be and tasted old, the mashed potatoes were cold, the green beans were luke warm and the rolls were very old. It was hard to cut the rolls and we didn't eat them. We got an order of onion rings and they were hot and good. Evidently the tea must have been $3.00 as our $15.00 of chicken fried steak and $5.00 onion rings turned out to be over $31.00. The waitress didn't give us an itemized bill and never came back so we could ask her. There are too many good places to eat here in San Angelo so we will not be eating here again. read more

On a road trip we chose Cotton Patch Cafe to experience some local flavor (rather than a predictable chain restaurant) and we are so glad we did! The atmosphere was welcoming, country music in the background and four big screen TVs, service was prompt and attentive--Carol checked back on us often, and those hot rolls we had while waiting for our food--yum! The chicken fried steak was the best we had ever tasted, and we've eaten plenty of chicken fried steak. The black-eyed peas were cooked perfectly, as was the okra. Dinner salads were typical food service quality but other than that everything was tasty. Too full for dessert but the list sure was tempting. Wish this was down the street from us! read more

My wife and I went on a Sunday evening for a quiet meal and had a most enjoyable evening. I had Chicken and Dumplings with steamed veggies. The chicken and dumplings were seasoned just right for my taste; a little soupier than I like but not a deal-breaker. The steamed veggies were incredibly good. Times of now are very difficult for both restaurants and consumers. This COVID challenge has been going on for months. Some places with strong management have adapted quickly as the curbside and to-go pick up is the primary service. I waited 1.5 hrs for my order today. They said they were busy despite that when I called it in I was told 15min. Finally got my order, the young lady was very nice, apologetic and said they just got overwhelmed. I drive home to find they forgot to give me my sides, gravy and my salad was brown. I called back and the same girl said come back and she would have my stuff ready. I drove back and again she was very nice, said thanks for not yelling about it all. Then it hit me.... a verse that was just shared with me 4 days ago. I immediately shared my story with her. It's all ok I said! I told her 2 Cor 12:7-10 Sometimes we are given thorns, we can complain about our thorns and ask for them to be taken away, but they are to remind us to not be conceited or think of ourself as higher. In times of difficulties we should know Gods grace is more than sufficient for us. His power is made perfect in our weaknesses. read more

He isn't anxious to go back however, I've had chicken fried steak at other Cotton Patch Cafe's in Cleburne and Lake Worth and it was great at both places which is the reason I will give this restaurant another try. I have been EXCEPTIONALLY critical of this Cracker Barrel want-to-be establishment. Up until a few days ago, that is. Even on 8/21, as my friend and I dined on the basket lunches, the service was still exceedingly slow and borderline rude, but I maintain that the food never disappoints. However on 8/26, the same friend and I had an occasion to revisit the establishment for lunch. More crowded than usual, we were greeted and seated.. immediately, yes... immediately, the waitress, Brittany, took our order and sped off to get our drinks. When my guest had to use the restroom, I attempted to guide him from behind his walker and Brittany stopped what she was doing and walked him to the restroom. She came back with refills, our order was exact and hot and she even came to ask if my guest needed to be checked on as he was taking a while in the lavatory. She, and others, were apologetic at the lack of servers for the day and mentioned Illnesses as the root cause for the slow service. This is when I happily informed her that this was, by far, the best experience I have had at this restaurant since moving to San Angelo a few years ago. This prompted her to become a tad emotional and notify the manager who came to our table to talk with us about our experience. As of 8/26, I can honestly state that The Cotton Patch Cafe is working hard to turn their reputation around. If Thursday was any indication, I think they are well on their way. The food here is very tasty and the ambiance is perfect for a family meal. The reason for my three star review is the service we received last night. Knowing COVID restrictions have many restaurants closing early, we checked Yelp for updated hours and asked the hostess upon entry. Both confirmed this location closes at 9:30, it was 8pm. We had a party of six, walked through the empty main dining area to the back where all chairs were on the tables and staff was trying to close this room. They pulled chairs off the tables back onto the dirty floor while we stood around and waited. Our waitress was rude and trying to rush us out for the entire meal. All of our requests (if delivered at all) took at least ten minutes. We were informed the kitchen is closing in ten minutes, even though the twice confirmed closing time was an hour away. She stood around trying to pre-bus plates we were obviously not done with. Tried to take our full bowl of queso instead of offering a chip refill & when we requested one she brought about seven old greasy chips and said that's all they had. Brought our five year-old a large lemonade. Husband and I both have a long history in the service industry and we understand that life. However, this is your job you chose and we shouldn't be made to feel intrusive while on a very rare outing to support our local economy. I had to beg my husband to leave her a 15% tip on our $100 bill the service was so bad. read more

I like it when managers are walking around and available, too, and one really wasn't here. He was present but I never felt like I could really grab him and express this.
