Upon arrival we were greeted and welcomed in very nicely. I brought my daughter here for her birthday and she was excited that they have fried green tomatoes. We got that as appetizer, and they were fried well and tasteful. She ordered chicken fried steak, with fries and she said it was good, also broccoli, she said it was too smushy. I started my order by asking for the fried fish and shrimp, I was told that they don't have any fish, but they can add more shrimp. I decided to get the pork chop with side of squash and baked sweet potato. When waiter brought out our food, she said the sweet baked potato would take about 6 minutes or do I want another side. I said I will wait for it. We were almost done with our food, and I asked can I get the sweet potato to go, and she they forgot, and they can give me another side, I asked if I could get a side price removed. She asked her manager, and they honored it. I saw other guest getting the basked of rolls and I asked can we get some and is there extra charge. We got it with no charge, so I guess you have to ask for it. The pork chop was a bit too salty, and the squash was too sweet.

Walked in and I was a little hesitate. Dining room had the bright cafeteria look to it. Sat down ordered chicken fried steak. I've traveled all over the country and this has been one of these BEST chicken fried steak I have ever had. Mashed potatoes were perfect and green beans perfectly seasoned. Come to find out everything on the menu is made from scratch. Food and service is a 10 out of 10. Oh and you got to try the Dr Pepper chocolate cake. Perfect suggestion from my server Valerie. Whether you're passing through or lost in east texas, this place is a must. Enjoy

A dump.we were seated next to bathroom although there were several better tables available. There was a drink spilled all over the floor, people were stepping in it. Asked for a better table which we got but nobody ever came to take our drink or food order. We waited an inordinate amount of time , nobody ever came so we left. There were plenty servers so there is no excuse for this. What a dump, avoid this place. Taco bell is right around the corner, much better than this overpriced joint where they completely ignore you

Chicken fried chicken was juicy and properly seasoned and the best we'd ever had. Ditto for the green beans and the okra. She wouldn't tell us what she puts in the green beans, but it's some combination of bacon grease and magic, I swear. The okra was fresh cut, fresh battered, fresh fried, unlike every other place I get it where you can tell it's out of a bag. Hot water cornbread was ah-mazing. I only wish I had honey to slather on it along with the butter. White gravy was fantastic, with just a hint of sweetness we couldn't quite put our finger on. Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes were delicious, but also the only things I can say were on par with some of our other favorites. Prices are extremely reasonable. And the service is as down home and personal as you would expect at a place like Sylvia Mae's. But don't expect quick delivery of your food. My husband ordered the beef tips & rice as well as the collards and pinto beans. Everything was so delicious but my favorites were the beef tips & rice and the scalloped potatoes. You get 1 entree and 2 sides with roll/cornbread for about $15. If you want a drink that is extra. If you want something other than fast food but more like what you would cook at home - try it. Everything that my husband and I had I can cook better at home. For starters, I would buy fresh mustard/turnip greens to cook and not get mine from a can. Same with the sweet potatoes. The rice was instant rice that was not cooked properly and was crunchy. When I asked for rice and gravy, the young woman serving me looked confused because there was no "gravy" selection and I had to point to the gravy with the hamburger steak- which by the way was frozen hamburger patties, not fresh hamburger meat hand shaped. So, if that sounds like good home cooking, go for it. I'll probably just stay home and cook.

First, the service was excellent, I believe our server was named Presley. Very kind, always checking on us and keeping our water and tea full. On the buffet, my dad enjoyed the salad he had, but was surprised at the little variety offered that day. He said last time he was there with my brother there was more to choose from. He then got the fried chicken, which was greasy and barely any chicken on the thigh. I tried to find a drumstick but it was just breasts, thighs and a few wings. He did like the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. As for the fried okra, you have to eat it fresh. It is sitting under a heat lamp just makes it soggy and slimy. I ordered 4 vegetables a la carte which came out to be as much as the all you can eat buffet. First, their onion rings are OUTSTANDING! So is their homemade ranch. What was disappointing was the green beans, they definitely came out of a can and were heated. At $3.99 I expected fresh. There may have been a small piece of onion in it. Not sure if that was how it was cooked or if it fell in from another dish. The black-eyed peas were tasty. I also had a cup of the chicken corn chowder which was good. However, there was pieces of cubed chicken in it which also made me think that it was a prepackaged soup and not homemade. My dad got the coconut cream pie, which tasted good, but could have used more coconut then just on the top. He wanted bread pudding or peach cobbler, however at the time of day we were there, they had been picked over way too much, not leaving much for anyone else to enjoy. I did like the selections in the gift shop and purchased a tea towel before we left. I always like to try a place 3 times so I may stop in and try something else. Again, great customer service.
