(Long review!)
Even though there are quite a few bike shops between where I live and Cosmic, I will definitely be making them my main bike shop.
I first went there to check out their sale they were having at the end of the summer, because I was in the market for a new seat and a few other accessories, but I'm on a tight budget. NOTE: I'm usually nervous walking into any bike shop, because I am not someone with flashy equipment or a lot of money to spend. I have found many bike shops to have a kind of elitist vibe and I eventually walk out feeling like something is wrong with me and the kind of cyclist I am since both of my bikes were less than $200 on Craigslist. I was able to find my saddle, some new handlebar grips, a side-view mirror, and a new (dinosaur-shaped, squeaky!) "bell," all for a pretty good deal. PLUS, ***magical miracle bonus: turns out Cosmic Bikes is ACTUALLY related to my former favorite neighborhood shop from my old 'hood- Rapid Transit! (***One thing I loved about Rapid Transit was that they stored all info related to my bike and purchases in their system, including the serial number info for a bike lock I purchased from them in case I ever lose the key- and Cosmic also does this... plus they're able to access your prior info from Rapid Transit if you were previously their customer, like I was) With all of this info I was pretty sure I had found my new shop. Plus, Justyna was super reassuring when I expressed concern about whether or not the new saddle would be comfortable for me, and told me to feel free to ride it for a while to be sure it was compatible with my anatomy. (Luckily, the seat works great for me and I had no need to return it.)
Then in October, my man surprised me with a trip to Cosmic Bikes for an anniversary gift of a brand new sparkly helmet. Unfortunately, it turned out that the young associate I asked about the helmet's fit on my head was maybe not in his area of expertise, and in my excitement for my shiny new headgear I accidentally went home with a way-too-big helmet! I called a few days later to ask about coming in to be properly fitted and exchanging my helmet for a new size and Justyna said it would be no problem.
So, when I was in a car accident a week later and my bike was on the back of the car, and I noticed some loud-ish rubbing when I next tried to ride my bike, I of course took it right in to Cosmic for a once-over and a long-overdue tuneup. They were able to get back to me with a quote for the work I think the same day that we dropped off the bike, and although it might have been a bit more than I was expecting, I was happy to have the work done by people I trusted. Plus, my bike happens to be "yarn-bombed," or almost all covered in crocheted yarn I've attached to the frame, and I was afraid that an overzealous technician might cut some of my bike's "sweater" off if it got in the way of repairs-- so I made sure to emphasize that I'd be happy to come remove any of it myself but would prefer they call me instead of trying to remove it themselves. Although it turned out it wasn't necessary for them to remove any of the yarn, I was pleased that they took my eccentric request (and bike) so seriously, and I even noticed on my receipt that they had made a note in my account to call me about the yarn! I rode my bike the 5 miles home the other night and the new brakes they put on worked like a charm when an evil Uber driver tried to kill me and I had to swerve and slam on the brakes to avoid being hit when he decided to drive in my lane to circumvent traffic.
And, as an extra bonus, Cosmic Bikes has a lot of guarantees for their repair work so I'm confident that if anything comes up in the next month or so I can call them back and get it worked out.
So, in case you weren't yet sure, check out this bike shop! They are committed to all cyclists regardless of level or miles or budget, and even offer free community classes and rides. I especially love an independent business who places importances in and uses resources for community-building. read more
