That one star is a negative one star. Except for my entire dinner, everyone else's was tasty. Drinks were nightmarish -- no ice, ran out of water several times, and for one guest's drink the bar tender came over with a McGuyver fix, because he forgot an ingredient 5 minutes. All tolerable and fixable and might have only led to 4.5 stars had mine dinner not been a nightmare. I ordered meatballs that were described on the menu as topped by ricotta cheese. I ordered them (two orders as a main course) with no cheese. It's a preference and eating it would make me sick but not kill me. It came out with cheese. The waiter was appropriately apologetic and went to have it remade. 25 minutes later still no new meatballs and my dining companions were more then halfway done, trying to be polite. I asked for them and were told "they are coming". 5 to 10 minutes later they came, with different cheese melted. I repeated no cheese but that I didn't want to wait another 30 minutes for fresh meatballs with no cheese, and asked for a menu. Rather then respond to my request, the waiter took the meatballs back and was explaining to the kitchen what was wrong, while I was sitting.
I went to the hostess stand and asked to speak with the manager, discreetly. No manager came, but the executive chef did. I asked her, do you make your meatballs from scratch for each order, she said "yes". One doesn't need to have worked in an Italian restaurant to know that meatballs are not made to order, but more likely made beforehand and reheated to order -- or they wouldn't be good. So, I said again, I don't believe you make them from scratch per order and she then said "oh no we don't, we make them earlier and reheat them in the oven". And so I asked why did it take 30 minutes. I said it should have taken 5 minutes, at least the second time when it was correcting the order. She said "maybe 7 to 10 minutes" so I said I will have 2 orders with no cheese and went back to my table. A few minutes later she came to the table and said did you not want ricotta cheese or any cheese. I said no cheese, not ricotta, not cheddar, Parmesan, nothing. I can't eat cheese. She said, "oh, there is cheese in the meatballs themselves".
I said, I will have nothing. She offered to do something, I said no thank you, I want to remain calm and not embarrass myself in front of my family. She stood there, and I said "and you are still standing there, leave me alone". And she again said she was trying to make it right. It was already too wrong, and I wanted to be done.
15 minutes later my family was done and we waited 20-30 minutes for the check. I finally said are you bringing the check or keeping it. He said, I will get it right out. He brought it and said - "Of course we comped your meatballs", as if that was a magnanimous gesture. No offer of a drink, a coffee, an apology.
The staff and chef could not be more tone deaf. When a customer asks for no cheese, the cheese described as an ingredient on the menu, but there are other cheeses in the dish, is it too hard to ask 'what do you mean by no cheese' the second or third time once it is discovered?
That the waiter couldn't respond quick enough with a menu so I could eat while my family still was eating was another missed opportunity; that the chef didn't have the forethought either or know when to step away but felt entitled to another try at making it right made it worse.
We didn't set out for a free dinner. We wanted a cool place with good food, like most describe in the reviews. Our experience was so bad, and then I was stuck with a bill for $175 for 3 people who all ate, but not me is a bummer. That the restaurant couldn't do better is an indication of bad training and management.
I can't recommend this place. The pizza oven didn't work, the waiter was brain dead, the chef tone deaf -- and you might leave disappointed as I am. read more
