Ellen was responsive initially, but this was only until they received payment. After this, trying to get a response was like getting blood from a stone: close to impossible. My architect had asked Julian, the engineer, if he could draw a rough mock up before he put together a full set of plans (to which he agreed). We never got this, despite checking in multiple times, and instead, it was only right upon the 'deadline' we had provided for the project that we received a full final set of plans. This was disappointing. The plans themselves were riddled with errors: it seemed like a lot of copy / paste work rather than careful attention to detail. The wrong county was listed, and certain structural details were copy pasted from the wrong city, which my architect had to point out. We had around 30 local contractors look at the plans, as well as two peer reviews of the plans from other licensed structural engineers, and the feedback was that it had been over-designed (consistent with one of the other yelp reviews). After multiple emails attempting to get Julian (the engineer) on a call, he was incredibly defensive, and rude. It was at this point, I was appalled that he would speak to a client like this, so decided to cut ties with this company and use another structural engineer instead. If you are in absolutely no rush, and have no concerns about over-design: perhaps this company will work for you. But for our residential project, this was one of the worst experiences I have had with a "professional" service, and I want to warn others.

The first was figuring out how to realign a very complicated roofline so that rainwater would channel properly. The house has been built and added onto in stages over roughly 100 years, so every addition and alteration made the roofline more complicated and less cohesive. I had literally spent hours sitting on the roof trying to figure out a workable solution. Eugene looked at the situation, thought it through for about 10 minutes, and sketched out an option that simply would never have occurred to me. It was practical, elegant, and made immediate sense. The consultation was some of the best $400 I've spent. The second issue was understanding how well the house is braced for earthquakes and how the existing foundation works structurally. Again, Eugene combined a strong engineering mind with real-world practical experience and explained everything in a way that I could actually understand. I almost never take the time to write reviews, but I was impressed enough that here I am writing one. Eugene is smart, thoughtful, practical, and very good at explaining complicated structural issues in plain English. I would absolutely call him again.

Excessive Charges, Terrible Communication, and Poor Customer Service…read more My experience with Sten Engineering has been extremely frustrating. What started as a $1,500 charge for structural plans to remove a load-bearing post ballooned to $6,000 to add a sliding door. Worse, I wanted to open up both sides of my fireplace, but the engineer insisted only one side could be modified. My new contractor believes both sides can be opened, yet Sten now wants another $2,500 just to add a window to the plans! Their proposal lists revisions at $100/hour, so how does adding a window justify 25 hours of work? Communication has been appalling. Every time I reached out with questions, the focus seemed to be on collecting the next installment rather than providing answers. Management doesn't respond, and I had to contact the city myself to clarify that the change could be submitted as a revision. We are days away from demolition, and instead of helping move the project forward, they want to charge thousands more. Extremely unprofessional, unresponsive, and seemingly more interested in collecting payments than helping clients. I deeply regret hiring them. Homeowners, beware!
