Fransisco and team did a fantastic job on our vaulted ceiling project. The on site inspection was reasonably priced, and becomes a credit if you opt to get full drawings done. We wanted three walls removed and our 8ft ceilings vaulted to 11ft. He spent about 4 hours on site and covered every square foot of our home to make sure he had all the necessary dimensions, pictures and details in order to make an assessment. He presented three options to me for vaulting, discussed pros and cons of each and left me with a digital packet of all of the notes and pictures he took. The turn around time for drawings was one week and required one re-submission to the city with a minor note correction. Overall we are thrilled with the vaulted ceilings which would not have been possible without FJ engineering. read more

I searched for a structural engineer on Yelp and found their profile. Their reviews were great so I contacted them for advice. My original structure engineer had done a plan that I wanted them to review. Francisco (though inundated with work and projects) took the time to review my plans and provide his feedback. He was honest and provide detailed explanations in agreement with my original structural engineer. He didn't have to review my plans but he did. He didn't have to provide elaborate explanations but he did. He could have easily tried to get my business by disagreeing with my original structural engineer but he didn't. I can't speak to the quality of the work product, but they were approved by the city; therefore, I'm assuming the quality was fine; therefore, I am giving more than one star. With that said, the customer service from Francisco is lacking. Similar to what Albert W. wrote, I believe Francisco is unprofessional. While he did complete the work for me, on more than one occasion, he has told me that he is doing me a favor by doing the engineering work. I don't know about you, but it doesn't feel good as a consumer when the person who is doing a job for you is telling you that he doesn't need your money and he's only doing it as a favor for you. When I kindly asked about the status of the job because it was past the deadline they provided me, he became defensive, accused me of being hostile, and threatened to return money and not provide the services he agreed to. He told me that he has projects that are higher budgets and higher priority than mine. I don't understand how it went from 0 to 100 because I asked about the status of the plans??? In any case, he needs to improve customer service skills. The other members of his staff were fine and pleasant to deal with. read more

Anyhow it's my first time going through this process and I don't think we communicated very well on both ends. In the end, I think he saw me as a risk and respectfully declined to work with me. That's fair. My rating was related to the lack of communication and professionalism on both sides. Update: Francisco decided to reply to my comment and I will reply to his. He is making assumptions and his professionalism is lacking. This review is for FJ Engineering. Specifically, this review is for Francisco Garcia, a licensed Civil Engineer. My fiance and I bought our single story 1950s house in Monterey Park in 2014. At purchase, we noted that the roof had a sag in it. According to the inspector, the sag was stable and all that was required was "a 2x4 to prop it back up". Unfortunately, this was not the case. A subsequent inspection by myself and another licensed contractor discovered that the purlin (horizontal roof beam that supports the midpoint of a roof slope) had actually broken off in that section. Additionally, a ridge brace was buckling. I wanted an engineered solution and one that would allow me to effect a repair without costing undue amounts of money. Furthermore, I wanted an engineer who would be personable, informative, and local to my neighborhood. After some searching through the state engineer's board and various background checks, I decided to give FJ a call. Francisco came out a few days later and spent about an hour and a half sketching and planning. In the end, he provided a solution that was within our budget but would also ensure the safety of our home and family. The repair was conducted by my licensed contractor. Two months later, our roof slope remains normal and I feel much better knowing that the ridge brace is well reinforced. Through the whole process, Francisco was very helpful in answering both my questions and allaying any concerns that I had. What began as a deeply troubling worry ended up being a source of confidence as the winter rains poured hundreds of gallons of water over our roof.
