Today was the day. Got up and went to get my hair cut before I get cast in the Lion King and then took a quick DNA test. Trying to straighten out genealogy from the 1750's and have an impasse with Ancestry.com with one of two paths so seeing if 23 and Me can give an additional insight. In any case, got the hair cut, took the DNA test and dropped it off at the Lincolnton Post Office and got to the Cat Square Family Restaurant around 1:00 pm today which is a Saturday. Parking lot was packed when we got there but most were in the front dining room while the back dining room still had plenty of space. Not much to look at from the outside being a repurposed gas station but don't let looks fool you. Food is great and Service is even better. Walked in and they have a slim staff with Covid and my wife asked if we should seat ourselves. They responded yes and we soon found a table in the back room. Always iffy if you get a back room because quite often, out of sight, out of mind. Not the case here. We had out first encounter with our server within one minute of seating and it was consistent throughout our dining experience. Cuisine is typical of what you would encounter in a diner or family restaurant but very well executed. Started with Mozzarella Cheese Sticks as an appetizer. When it was served, it as served with both Ranch and Marinara Sauces so we had a good choice. My wife likes the Ranch while I prefer the Marinara and while the Marinara was prepackage and not fresh made, that is better than a Marinara that does not have a nice fresh taste. The prepackaged was the better option in terms of quality. My wife ordered the Philly Cheese Steak along with Onion Rings. Both were great and portion size was such that she had extra for a later lunch. I had a BLT with Fries and both were great. I'm a bit of a purist because I consider a BLT to be the ultimate Sandwich and this one was very good although I do like my bacon a bit less crispy. I know I am a outlier but the sandwich was great anyway. Was surprised with the French Fries. Not undercooked, not pasty or grainy from being undercooked and not greasy but rather as close to perfect as I have found locally. They do not salt the fries as most places do and leave the amount of salt up to the consumer. Very good and will be back although note unfortunately, it's about a 40 minute drive from here so will not be a frequent as I would like.

We started with the nachos; they were delicious, though I do wish they came with a bit more meat. For mains, the burger was outstanding--probably one of the best we've had in the entire area. We also ordered the Brazilian steak, which was cooked perfectly and came with great plantains. The quinoa with tofu was good, too, though it was a little dry and would have been perfect with a sauce. The service really stood out. Our waitress was incredibly attentive and refilled my water at least four times without me asking. Great ambiance and an all-around good experience. Definitely worth the wait!

Our friends fared worse. The husband ordered a rib eye and deemed it "just ok." The wife ordered a filet cooked medium and it came out completely rare. She tried eating around the edges but left most of her steak untouched (I would have sent mine back to the kitchen if I were her, but my friend is wary of sending meat back; she said she was afraid it would then be overcooked). Her broccolini side dish was so undercooked that it was basically raw, so she didn't eat that either. The french fries and baked potato were fine, and our server was capable and pleasant. However, given the overall experience, we won't be back. That type of meal is handled much better by Stonewall's in Banner Elk.

I am so glad we decided to have dinner there! The inside is very cozy with music playing and friendly staff. They were very knowledgeable about gluten free and I felt confident in them. While we waited on our food my husband ordered a Smoky old fashioned and I had a Chardonnay. When our food arrived we were so impressed! I ordered a bone in pork chop with roasted Brussel sprouts and mashed sweet potatoes. The pork chops were topped with mustard onions. It was the best pork chop I have ever eaten! My husband ordered a burger with fingerling potatoes. Everything was cooked perfectly. For desert my husband had banana pudding and I had a gluten free fudge truffle pie. AMAZING!!! We are here for a few more days and plan to have another meal there before we leave. The prices were good for the amount of food served. The restaurant is very clean and is a lot larger than it appears from the outside. They also have outdoor seating and if you're in the mood for Corn hole they have a game set up for you. My burrata was delivered atop a spiral of beefsteak wedges, nestled among wild greens, with zero seasoning, which is a hate crime when it comes to tomatoes; golden beets would've elevated it considerably, normally without much consideration... however. I'd thankfully chosen to add salmon, which was cooked to perfection, saving the dish. Haley suggested salt and pepper, which was a clutch move. Given the pleasant part of my previous experience, the salmon salad I ordered two nights later was even more discombobulated. Emily asked what kind of dressing I'd prefer, and I managed to avoid recoiling from the options provided: bleu cheese, ranch, thousand island... and then, finally, a cilantro-lime vinaigrette - the only suitable option. Instead of a deep plate, this was served essentially as a "bowl" that one might receive from delivery, only in a ceramic vessel. "Crispy" garbanzo beans (?!) were in one section of the plate, worse green olives than came with my martinis in another, four sad cucumber slices and pickled red onions in yet another, and in the saddest section, under-cooked yellow beets - half-run through a mandoline to make matchsticks, only still-connected at one end into slices to make Hell-deemed beet sporks. Again, all atop mixed greens, which are commonly available, even at Wal-Mart. I didn't deign to more than glance at my neighbors' plates, for fear I'd take even more offense, but the people making food at The Social are either under-staffed or inexperienced, as being unserious would likely wash out if anyone were to pay attention. Regardless, management is to blame for such disappointing experiences, and not their cooks, and certainly not their bartenders. Do better by Boone, and stop reinforcing the notion that standards are somehow lower in the High Country. Don't make me go to Macado's when I visit again next year.
