I was super excited to try Constance for their freshly milled matcha and it lived up to the hype! I got the signature matcha latte and it was basically everything I want my matcha to be. It was nice and creamy from the milk but the matcha flavor still shown through. My biggest pet peeve is when a matcha latte just tastes like milk or when the drink is grainy and thankfully Constance delivered. There's a ton of new matcha spots popping up and I have to Constance is one of the ones that actually serve a solid matcha that isn't simply dessert. Definitely come try the matcha! I may have to try the reserve one next time.
I really wanted to like this place due to all the hype with freshly milled matcha! I went on a weekday morning, so there wasn't much of a line. There are a few benches with small tables and bar seating by the window. Staff is friendly and does try to have conversations with customers when it's not too busy. It was a good experience and cool to see the machines (they have matcha tours apparently!), but the matcha was just alright. I ordered a simple iced oat milk matcha latte, less sweet (all drinks come default less sweet). The matcha flavoring was very light - I could hardly taste it. You could tell it was freshly milled though - it was a bit grainy.
Tried their freshly milled reserve matcha latte ($11.95) and I wanted to love it, but honestly it fell below my expectations. I've definitely had better matcha. I think the main issue is that the milk overpowers the matcha and dilutes its flavor by a lot. I wouldn't be opposed to trying just the matcha itself next time. I think it's super cool how they have it milled in house and you can see the machines in work towards the back of the store. There's street parking. The store itself is clean, compact, and you have the option to order with the staff or at the kiosk.

Many places turn around matcha fast as the demand increases. There is a place which takes time to make matcha for Don Juan de la matcha in SF. It's located in the Outer Richmond neighborhood and it's called Constance Tea & Matcha. On a less sunny day and in a blue moon in the Outer Richmond ( not the city of Richmond) in SF I landed on Balboa street. Constance Tea & Matcha is the only store to grind tencha leaves into matcha in house using a stone mill. I had to order the freshly milled matcha. I got the iced Freshly Milled Usucha which was refreshing. Great taste and already wanted another one. You can taste the freshly milled matcha. For the weekend of Outside Lands expect longer wait times . Good matcha for Don Juan de la Matcha is worth the wait. Come go on a Summer stroll to grab some matcha with Don Juan de la Matcha which is "great "the only store which grind techa leaves to "date"in SF and cities around the "Golden Gate "and good matcha comes for those who "wait" Watch the tea "spill"with tea leaves grinding using a "stone mill" you have it warm or "chill" at Constance Tea & Matcha and it's so good you need a matcha "refill"
Cool efficient service in a bright clean modern space. Such a rarity to find a shop that mills their own matcha with machines from Japan! The freshly milled options can sell out daily so best to go early. Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Latte Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Americano Our drinks were high in quality and prepared expertly by staff who were definitely professionals at their craft, efficiently preparing matcha and tea orders to a steady stream of curious customers. Overall, however, the taste experience was good but not exceptional as far as high end tea experiences go so a 4 out of 5.
I am not a big matcha fan so thats why it's not a 5 star. But the tea definitely is literally milk tea. There is not much sugar and is not like a boba spot. I think my friends definitely enjoyed the matcha, but the milk tea is not something that i would go there for at all.
Heard many great things about this new matcha establishment and although I miss Sweet House, putting a Matcha spot here is tremendously smart. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of my experience. What I ordered: Matcha Einspanner MATCHA: 6/10 A lot of their drinks look promising both on the menu and in person. However, my first sip was very underwhelming. I was hoping for a smooth matcha sip, but it was very gritty and the Einspanner tasted more like a salted cream cheese top. The matcha was bitter and drying. Now although, the worker did give a disclaimer that some of their matcha profiles do contain this, it still wasn't the quality I was expecting. SERVICE: 9/10 Staff are very kind, friendly, and informative. I appreciate how the worker gave a disclaimer as to what their different matcha profiles are. AMBIANCE: 8/10 Bright ambient lighting with a lot of seating than I expected. There is window seating and single seats all across the wall in front of their open cafe concept which I love. I think I wouldn't mind stopping by next time but probably to get a regular simple matcha latte than their crafted signatures. I would like to give this place a try one more time.
This is a small Tea shop where you can order at the counter or at a kiosk. We got the Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Latte and Black Matcha Latte. The Freshly Milled Matcha Latte was meh. The Milk overpowers the Matcha, so basically tastes like Green Milk. If you want to taste the Matcha, definitely just get the Matcha itself and skip the Milk. The Black Matcha Latte was also meh in flavor. I don't really know how it is supposed to be a Matcha drink, but certainly didn't taste like Matcha. Also, the Black Matcha didn't really have a great flavor. It tasted like Milked down Black Tea. Nothing special. Overall, this place is way overhyped and overpriced especially for the taste.
I came to Constance a few weeks ago and had a great experience! I dropped in on a Monday morning, half an hour after opening. To my surprise, there was no line and plenty of street parking which is unheard of in SF! This matcha shop is super cute, small, clean, bright, and has the sweetest workers that are dedicated to their craft. My bestie and I were a little confused on how to order but the workers broke down the menu and explained the different varieties of teas they offer. They have an extensive menu of freshly ground teas and offer a variety of stone ground tea drinks such as matcha, hojicha, and even black matcha. However, the star of the show was their freshly milled matcha, which is pretty unique in the bay area :) The freshly milled matcha is ground, in-house, using a traditional Japanese granite stone mill or ishi-usu. At the back of the shop they have three mills on display, which was pretty cool! I ordered the freshly milled matcha latte w/ oat milk substitute and cream top. Fyi, each drink has a fixed sweetness level and you aren't able to add a cream top to any of their freshly milled reserve drinks. This ensures that you can taste the notes of the matcha and appreciate the true flavors. My drink was delicious-- smooth, creamy, lightly sweetened, slightly earthy, and deep green! This latte was truly a treat and I believe all matcha lovers should give this place a try.. 5/5! I will be back at this location to give their reserve matcha a try next time!
The shop itself is small with few seating options, and the mills are protected in glass cases in the back of the store. Constance stands out by being the only matcha shop in SF to offer freshly milled matcha. The question on the top of my mind - can you tell? And even more puzzling - does it taste better? I ordered the highest grade of the fresh milled series (11.95$ ouch!) while a friend ordered their classic matcha latte at half the cost, to put this to rest. I can say for certain: yes you can tell the difference, though debatable if it's worth the cost. Both were grassy matchas but the 11.95$ one had a rounder flavor which did not have the bitter aftertaste the classic matcha latte did. Unfortunately, I did not like either drinks very much.... Maybe I would come back to try their einspanner or hojicha options.
we managed to beat the rush and came around 11am on a Sunday. I got the matcha einspanner and it was well balanced, smooth, and creamy. the hojicha einspanner was solid too. Both drinks were not too sweet and very enjoyable. I liked that they had seating inside and the space was open and airy. Service was fast and friendly. Would def visit again!
Constance is the first to have freshly milled matcha in the Bay Area! Their tea is very high quality and the matcha has a nice earthy undertone. However, I felt that both the black matcha and regular matcha got too washed out by the milk in the latte. Matcha taste was very subtle, but the texture was good. Given the price and the current lines, I would probably wait for the hype to die down a little bit. But definitely worth a try if you're in the area! Overall: 4.1/5
Matcha was super tasty! No line on a July 2026 Sunday afternoon around 1:40pm. The unique drink is black matcha tea which is grounded black tea. Hojicha latte is grounded roasted jasmine tea. Matcha is grounded tencha (shade grown jasmine tea). Order a matcha cream latte ($7.25) and a black matcha latte (7.25). I think the cream part was not needed, so I would order just the matcha latte. The matcha is smooth, had a great balance of freshness and it is not nutty. The black matcha was interesting, has a settle taste, but it is the most caffeinated of all the drinks. The flavor is not as fragrant as the matcha. Overall, the cafe has a great tea taste. A couple of benches with small tables to enjoy a cup of tea.

Ambiance: The cafe is modern, and clean. There is 1 large bench along the wall, and 2 bar seats along the window. There is no space for people to work or hang out FYI. Service: This place was constantly busy!! Be prepared to line up a bit, but the line moved fairly quick. Food: The matcha was delicious and tasted very high quality and fresh. I loved how intentional they were with sourcing the best matcha and took care to prepare it as well. You can definitely taste the quality! read more

Has a very chalky taste to it and the sweetness is very light. They have a syrup bottom on the side so you can add your to your liking. Not worth the price compared to other matcha spots The workers are nice and showed us the machine. read more

Gochujang latte - very interesting. Got it for free and not sure I would pay for it. It's creamy and sweet but also pretty spicy. Definitely tastes better after the spiciness dilutes a bit Freshly milled matcha latte - a bit overhyped imo - felt very watery. Price is premium for freshly milled matcha, but not sure I'd get it again. Ambiance inside is nice, and there's a few seats and tables but it's quite small inside. The staff were super friendly though, and I'd come back to try their einspanners & black matcha. read more

I highly recommend this place. I liked it so much that I came back the next day. One of the coolest things about this place is that they freshly mill their matcha in-house. I don't know of any other spot in San Francisco that does this, but I'd love to hear if there are others. I ordered the Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Americano, and it was absolutely worth trying. It had a smooth, earthy flavor without being bitter. I usually go for matcha Americanos because I'm not a big fan of thicker matcha lattes, and this one was especially refreshing. My partner ordered the Freshly Milled Matcha Latte and really enjoyed it as well. If you prefer a creamier matcha drink, that would be a great choice. On my first visit, I didn't realize you could customize the sweetness. Their default is "less sweet," which I actually thought was just right. When I came back the next day, the staff asked if I wanted to adjust the sweetness level, which was a nice to know. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. I also loved the clean, minimalist design of the place, it felt bright and thoughtfully put together. The space is on the smaller side, with a few seats available, but it seems like most people stop in for a drink to go. While I waited, I enjoyed looking through the photos and reading about the matcha on the walls. It made the experience feel a little more special while watching my drink being freshly whisked. The only thing I'd love to see is them selling their freshly milled matcha in tins. I would definitely buy one to enjoy at home! read more
I came here right after my half marathon because I was absolutely excited to try the first matcha mill in San Francisco! It's a cozy spot in the sunset district and the tables and booth are set up along the wall so you can talk to your neighbor. I ordered the matcha latte with light ice. The cashier let me know that ordering light ice doesn't change the amount of liquid in the drink and I was okay with that. I typically prefer less ice in my matcha drinks so I can taste the matcha better. You can adjust your sweetness and milk of choice as well. You can watch your drink being made since it's a glass between the baristas and the crowd. When I finally took a sip, I was sad it didn't have the matcha punch to it. It was pretty much milk I was drinking. I was looking for the matcha and could barely taste it. I even mixed it and still same result. The price of the matcha is the same as most places so you're better off sticking to your usual matcha place. read more
first time going to Constance Matcha recently Their Matcha is milled in-house just like you would expect from Japan. I think that's what makes it so good, they have reserve Matcha, which is the highly sought after Matcha that is even more earthier than what you would get from want to be Macha places. The service was good. They show you what the milling process looks like inside And the ambience has a row of seating so that you can watch them whisk Matcha and explain to you the process of crafting your drinks read more
Came here on a Sunday morning and there was a short line. My sister and I ordered the Matcha Einspanner, but the cashier accidentally rang one of our drinks up as the Black Matcha Einspanner and we didn't realize until the drinks came out, so we ended up trying both. I was excited to try it and the color looked good but I felt like the matcha itself lacked the typical tasting notes of nuttiness, umami, or sweetness that I look for. It was moreso grassy and bland so not my preference. The black matcha looked like a hojicha and didn't taste like matcha but my sister said the drink was ok. Both drinks were grainy but especially the black matcha. I watched the preparation of several drinks and it seems like the matcha wasn't being whisked thoroughly. If you aren't picky about your matcha like I am it might be worth a try. read more
Saw this on my reels a while ago and have been wanting to visit so bad because they have matcha mills in store and serve fresh milled matcha!! Store was very aesthetic, minimalistic, and they have not 1 not 2 but 3(!!!) matcha mills for showing. They were so cool! We came around 15 minutes after opening time on a Saturday, and there was no line! When we left around 11:30am, there was a longgg line out the door tho. We tried the fresh milled matcha latte and the black matcha einspanner. I was so intrigued about the black matcha because I've never seen or heard that anywhere else. Instead of grounded green tea leaves, they ground black tea leaves. The taste reminded me of black milk tea, only a lot grainier. I definitely think it's an acquired taste, probably like matcha is. The cream top was really good tho, not too sweet and not cheesy. It definitely added bonus points to the drink. The fresh milled matcha was solid! The matcha was actually really light, in the sense that it wasn't creamy. The taste was pretty strong though, although tbh I did expect a little stronger. I definitely want to come back to try some of their other options! read more

Love authentic matcha? Then this place is for you. Authentic meaning in its pure, unsweetened form. They do supply syrup on the counter though if you want to sweeten it up. Win. Taking more than 2 years to open, Constance has one very important distinction that automatically sets itself apart from every other matcha establishment in town. They've imported mills from Japan, so they are the first in SF to mill their matcha in house. Win. Black matcha?! What the wha...? Apparently, the definition of "matcha" is "tea leaves that have been finely ground," so enter black matcha & red matcha, made by the same process as traditional, authentic green matcha. I was uber intrigued, I'd never had black matcha before. Win. We came on a Sunday, in the last hour of service, & sure enough there was a line. But, we only waited about 20 minutes. Hardly a deal breaker, especially given the introduction to a whole new experience. Win. No doubt they had a line all day. But the cashier was still friendly & helpful. Win. We ordered one of each (green & black) with oat milk (oat milk is the only dairy alternative). Even though I didn't add syrup, this green matcha had virtually zero bitterness. Clean, yes. Bitter, no. Not sure if it's because this matcha latte is 12 bucks a pop, but it was outstanding & I was happy, so worth it. Win. Black matcha (served iced). I love black tea with milk, so I knew this wouldn't disappoint. It's not necessarily strong so much as you can actually taste the black tea notes despite the oat milk addition. Malty. Roasted. It was interesting & comforting. Win. A destination spot thanks to all the buzz they've been getting, it was totally worth the drive across town. Super techy in the back; there's live feed of the milling on a giant screen. If I lived in the area I would be coming here on the regular. The finest matcha in SF. 5 stars read more
Ishi-usu, which is stonemill in Japanese, is one thing I'll try to remember. This old contraption is good for grinding tencha tea leaves, maybe other loose leaves. Suppose we put in butterfly pea flower petals towards the center; eventually grinding them into a bluish powder form. Fun, right? All it takes is to turn the handle right; slow in the first few seconds until you move a little quicker, but at a steady pace. Such a bright airy space after coming all this way to Outer Richmond! A perfect place to lay back and enjoy tea lattes and premium Taiwanese handcrafted oolong tea leaves. The latest pick-me-up wasn't Uji Matcha nor hojicha, which Constance Tea & Matcha currently have. It's black matcha, milled from black tea leaves! If Korean matcha from the Jeju Islands wasn't the best taste of the season, how about Korean black matcha? Its flavor profile in a latte form was toastier than hojicha. THIS black tea powder form will now be so much better than the old school regular milk tea made from loose leaf black tea. I'll be waiting to find out if the baristas extend hours of business pass the evening. Till then, Constance Tea & Matcha is one of my favorite places to have solid tea drinks! read more
A unique experience with freshly milled matcha. The line was out the door on a Saturday afternoon . The line moved quick and drinks were made fairly quick as well. Ordered the black matcha latte and matcha latte. Both light sweet as the default with whole milk. It was nothing special and a bit bland. The black matcha latte was grainy with every sip. Cool concept but I don't think I'll return. read more
Why was this pretty good. The staff were friendly to the customers including the ones who were probably first time matcha consumers or just didn't know what to do. It's cute and has a robust menu, and you can stalk (watch) them make it if you're so concerned about it being like Starbucks matcha. Not a terrible price point, but there was a ton of ice and I should've gotten the hot matcha instead. read more

Grateful to have finally gotten to visit Constance Tea & Matcha during their soft opening. I visited on a holiday weekend, and so there was understandably a bit of a line. They appear to be in the process of building a parklet for outdoor seating. Make sure to wear layers if you have to wait outside, as the neighborhood can be quite windy and chilly year-round. The worker at the register was very friendly and relatively knowledgeable in answering my question regarding the difference between their Freshly Milled Matcha Latte and Stone Ground Matcha Latte--the freshly milled is milled in-house using tencha leaves from Uji (although it is unclear what cultivars), while the stone ground is powder milled previously using tencha leaves from Shizuoka. The employee mentioned that the matcha used in the Stone Ground Matcha Latte has a more astringent flavor that cuts through the fattiness of the milk well. My husband and I got both to try, and I definitely agree with the employee! I really enjoyed the flavors of the Stone Ground Matcha Latte, although both were very good beverages. I love that their default sugar setting is "less sweet". My only critiques would be: 1) to have ceramic mugs/glassware for patrons who wish to enjoy their drinks "for here"; 2) sell their freshly milled matcha in tins--I would definitely buy them and would love to have a local vendor; and 3) open earlier than 10AM so that this healthcare worker can grab a matcha before work. The concept of freshly milled matcha definitely cool, but could I actually taste the difference? Not really. I ordered the freshly milled matcha latte since the reserve and the black matcha was sold out. I also ordered the hojicha einspanner, and surprisingly I enjoyed that more than the milled freshly matcha. The milled matcha felt a bit watered down and didn't have the strong tea flavor I was hoping for. I came an hour before closing and still waited nearly 30 - 40 mins just to order and get my drink. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since they just recently opened. Again, I am no matcha connoisseur, but I'll have to come back and try their reserve. To note, the staff were friendly, and the matcha mills displayed around the shop were a cool feature. read more
We've been coming to Constance at least twice a week since they opened, and every visit has been consistently excellent. Ryan and Scott are always welcoming and take the time to explain the teas and how each drink is made. Constance is the first café in the SF Bay Area to freshly grind tencha leaves into matcha in-house using commercial-grade Japanese stone mills, and you can truly taste the difference. So far I've tried the Hojicha, Cassia Black Tea Latte, and Matcha Latte. The Cassia Black Tea Latte is rich and smooth with warm cassia spice, toasted malt, caramel, dark honey, and subtle cocoa notes. Every drink has been exceptional. They also use organic milk. The shop is small and gets busy, so be patient--it's absolutely worth the wait. Easily one of the best matcha and tea spots in the Bay Area. read more

And, they take it a step further by being the first matcha shop in NorCal to mill their own matcha! There's only one cashier so it may take awhile to order if there's a line and customer(s) have a lot of questions. I might be the only person who didn't really favor their matcha. It had more of a grassy flavor if you like that. The black matcha on the other hand was delicious! It really reminded us of hojicha but I heard it's not the same lol. Has a sesame after taste. I think the einspanner worked well with the drink because it provided a little more sweetness. Sweetness level is already at 30% and if you ask for even less sweet, that'll be no sweetness. On a Sunday morning we got there right at opening and there was a small line consistently even up until we left. read more
Having tried countless matcha cafés, this place really stood out to me for their premium in-house milled matcha. I came on a Saturday, and there was a short line, but I didn't have to wait too long. When it was my turn to order, the matcha barista explained to me how the in-house milled matcha differs from the traditional Japanese matcha and specifically called out that the nori flavor sets it apart. I ordered an iced freshly milled matcha latte with oat milk and was blown away. It tasted heavenly with a rich, umami flavor and zero grainy texture or grassy notes. This is going to be my #1 reco for anyone craving a cup of matcha in the city starting now. read more
Wow.. they stone grind the matcha from the tencha leaves right here onsite daily! Friendly courteous counter staff. It reminds me a little of Philz coffee where they have baristas that prepare your order. The owner is here to explain the entire process. It's fascinating to see. I loved my freshly milled iced matcha latte. Just smooth, and that's just from their standard grade. They have a fancier "Reserve" grade matcha available too. The aroma from the stone mill when they were reloading it was amazing. Stone milling just one batch of tencha takes several hours! We lucked out on a slow moment with no lines! Clean austere modern vibe with the expected white interior with wood accents. Yep.. definitely worth checking out! read more

My Matcha latte was so good. You could really taste the matcha leaves that were finely blended. So many options too. Service was good. Very informative. Ambiance was just as nice w/ a modern look. I will def be back. read more
Constance Matcha provides quality service, Japandi aesthetics, and delicious, smooth matcha drinks! I came here on a Friday morning around 10:30 AM (30 minutes after opening), and it was slightly busy. There wasn't a line, but there were a lot of folks waiting for their drinks. It's a bit of a compact space with some tables for waiting, but I wouldn't say this is the spot to socialize. In the back, they have their matcha milling machines that you can look at, but it's a bit tight with so many folks trying to take a glance. Between the two of us girlies, we got four drinks. I particularly got the Black Matcha Einspänner and the Usucha Matcha (which only comes hot in a 2 oz serving) to try out. The usucha matcha was nice, strong, and earthy. It cost $9, and if you're an avid matcha enjoyer who appreciates the taste, you'll enjoy its flavor profile. The Black Matcha Einspänner stood out the most to me. I regret not asking what makes it black, but what I really liked was how nutty it was, along with its creaminess and mellowness. I think it was the perfect amount of sweetness for me as well (the default is less sweet). Overall, if you are in the area, check this spot out! All of the baristas I interacted with were really friendly too, which is always thoughtful. read more

I come here whenever I'm in the area, and even sometimes will make a trip out just to come here. It's probably the best matcha I've had in the city and I'm a person who doesn't really like matcha. Their premium matcha had a flavor profile that almost changed my mind about how I feel about matcha. They have a black matcha on the menu which I've never really seen before and is also worth trying. Their hojicha latte is one, if not my favorite in the city. Service is fairly quick, especially when their isn't a line and the staff is super friendly! First establishment with stone mill grinding matcha in house. Store is set up with ordering in the front then long bench where you can wait for your drink. More of a grab your drink and go type of place. Teas and houseware are available for purchase next to the register. Staff provided recommendations for first time customers. Aesthetically pleasing environment. Order: Freshly milled matcha latte, organic whole milk on the bottom and fresh matcha on top. Oat milk is an extra $0.40. Default sweetness is 20%. Matcha had a grainy type texture to it, Grainy type texture to the drink either from matcha or the milk that was not desirable. Worth a try if you're in the area. It is a hot, new place. read more
Been monitoring the construction of this space for well over a year, and it's so cool to see it finally open! Line was down the block and it took us about 30min to get the ordering kiosk. The folks running Constance are so nice and eager to share their passion about matcha with you -- they took the time to go over the menu, the different types of matcha served, and the selection process. The menu does include other types of tea and tea drinks besides the matcha-based ones. Pricing is on the higher side, but seeing as how they freshly mill the matcha in-house, I think it's worth the little splurge every once in a while. We ordered the freshly milled Usucha ($5.95), which is a shot of matcha. The matcha was a lovely, bright green like tender shoots in spring, and the profile had this wonderful and refreshing earthiness that reminded me of chewing on pine needles. Did not have any of the bitterness that lower-quality matcha has -- I also suspect it's because they brewed it at a much lower temperature so it didn't burn or over-extract. Forgot to ask, but I'd guess the brewing temp was somewhere 70-75C. There's a long bench with small tables inside that seat about 10 people in total. If you walk all the way to end of the shop, you can watch the stone mills grinding the fresh matcha. Fascinating and cool to experience what's essentially a farm-to-table match experience. read more

New cafe that mills their own matcha onsite! I got the freshly milled matcha latte with oat milk and it was solid. Good matcha flavor! I like that all their drinks are lightly sweetened but they have a bottle of simple syrup so you can add more if it's not enough. The cafe inside is cute. Lots of light and there's some seating too. I would come back to try some of their other lattes like the black matcha latte or the hojicha latte. read more
Checked out the newly opened fresh milled matcha spot in Outer Richmond. Glad I did it. A wonderful cozy spot. Bench seating along the wall and a small counter. Many matcha options including fresh milled matcha, stone ground teas, freshly ground teas pulled to order, brewed teas. Friendly and efficient service. I chose the classic fresh milled matcha latte and it was perfect. No added sugar to allow me to enjoy the matcha. Wonderfully made and worth a future visit. Check this place out. read more
