I don't know of any other spot in San Francisco that does this, but I'd love to hear if there are others. I ordered the Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Americano, and it was absolutely worth trying. It had a smooth, earthy flavor without being bitter. I usually go for matcha Americanos because I'm not a big fan of thicker matcha lattes, and this one was especially refreshing. My partner ordered the Freshly Milled Matcha Latte and really enjoyed it as well. If you prefer a creamier matcha drink, that would be a great choice. On my first visit, I didn't realize you could customize the sweetness. Their default is "less sweet," which I actually thought was just right. When I came back the next day, the staff asked if I wanted to adjust the sweetness level, which was a nice to know. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. I also loved the clean, minimalist design of the place, it felt bright and thoughtfully put together. What I ordered: Matcha Einspanner MATCHA: 6/10 A lot of their drinks look promising both on the menu and in person. However, my first sip was very underwhelming. I was hoping for a smooth matcha sip, but it was very gritty and the Einspanner tasted more like a salted cream cheese top. The matcha was bitter and drying. Now although, the worker did give a disclaimer that some of their matcha profiles do contain this, it still wasn't the quality I was expecting. SERVICE: 9/10 Staff are very kind, friendly, and informative. I appreciate how the worker gave a disclaimer as to what their different matcha profiles are. AMBIANCE: 8/10 Bright ambient lighting with a lot of seating than I expected. There is window seating and single seats all across the wall in front of their open cafe concept which I love. I came here right after my half marathon because I was absolutely excited to try the first matcha mill in San Francisco! It's a cozy spot in the sunset district and the tables and booth are set up along the wall so you can talk to your neighbor. I ordered the matcha latte with light ice. The cashier let me know that ordering light ice doesn't change the amount of liquid in the drink and I was okay with that. I typically prefer less ice in my matcha drinks so I can taste the matcha better. You can adjust your sweetness and milk of choice as well. You can watch your drink being made since it's a glass between the baristas and the crowd. When I finally took a sip, I was sad it didn't have the matcha punch to it. It was pretty much milk I was drinking. I was looking for the matcha and could barely taste it. I even mixed it and still same result. The price of the matcha is the same as most places so you're better off sticking to your usual matcha place. read more

Saw this on my reels a while ago and have been wanting to visit so bad because they have matcha mills in store and serve fresh milled matcha!! Instead of grounded green tea leaves, they ground black tea leaves. The taste reminded me of black milk tea, only a lot grainier. I definitely think it's an acquired taste, probably like matcha is. The cream top was really good tho, not too sweet and not cheesy. It definitely added bonus points to the drink. The fresh milled matcha was solid! The matcha was actually really light, in the sense that it wasn't creamy. The taste was pretty strong though, although tbh I did expect a little stronger. Grateful to have finally gotten to visit Constance Tea & Matcha during their soft opening. I visited on a holiday weekend, and so there was understandably a bit of a line. They appear to be in the process of building a parklet for outdoor seating. Make sure to wear layers if you have to wait outside, as the neighborhood can be quite windy and chilly year-round. The worker at the register was very friendly and relatively knowledgeable in answering my question regarding the difference between their Freshly Milled Matcha Latte and Stone Ground Matcha Latte--the freshly milled is milled in-house using tencha leaves from Uji (although it is unclear what cultivars), while the stone ground is powder milled previously using tencha leaves from Shizuoka. The employee mentioned that the matcha used in the Stone Ground Matcha Latte has a more astringent flavor that cuts through the fattiness of the milk well. My husband and I got both to try, and I definitely agree with the employee! I really enjoyed the flavors of the Stone Ground Matcha Latte, although both were very good beverages. I love that their default sugar setting is "less sweet". My only critiques would be: 1) to have ceramic mugs/glassware for patrons who wish to enjoy their drinks "for here"; 2) sell their freshly milled matcha in tins--I would definitely buy them and would love to have a local vendor; and 3) open earlier than 10AM so that this healthcare worker can grab a matcha before work. The concept of freshly milled matcha definitely cool, but could I actually taste the difference? Not really. I ordered the freshly milled matcha latte since the reserve and the black matcha was sold out. I also ordered the hojicha einspanner, and surprisingly I enjoyed that more than the milled freshly matcha. The milled matcha felt a bit watered down and didn't have the strong tea flavor I was hoping for. I came an hour before closing and still waited nearly 30 - 40 mins just to order and get my drink. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since they just recently opened. Again, I am no matcha connoisseur, but I'll have to come back and try their reserve. Really enjoyed my visit last weekend! The staff was super knowledgeable and helpful. I told him what I was in the mood for and he made great recommendations based on what I liked. I ended up getting two drinks, the reserved matcha latte and the hojicha latte. The matcha was smooth with no bitterness and had a nice balance overall. The hojicha had a strong roasted flavor that I loved. Both drinks were amazing. The owner was also really welcoming and gave customers a tour of the cafe, including the tea milling machines. What makes this place special is that they mill their matcha fresh every day, and you can really taste the difference. The space is on the smaller side but there are seats available. We've been coming to Constance at least twice a week since they opened, and every visit has been consistently excellent. Ryan and Scott are always welcoming and take the time to explain the teas and how each drink is made. Constance is the first café in the SF Bay Area to freshly grind tencha leaves into matcha in-house using commercial-grade Japanese stone mills, and you can truly taste the difference. So far I've tried the Hojicha, Cassia Black Tea Latte, and Matcha Latte. The Cassia Black Tea Latte is rich and smooth with warm cassia spice, toasted malt, caramel, dark honey, and subtle cocoa notes. Every drink has been exceptional. They also use organic milk. The shop is small and gets busy, so be patient--it's absolutely worth the wait. Easily one of the best matcha and tea spots in the Bay Area. read more

We had the hot matcha latte and also the hot Americano style matcha made with only hot water & matcha without any sugar. The staff members focus on preparing each order with care. Worth waiting a little more for our order. There is seating inside this small shop but people do rotate in and out and don't seem to linger too long so we did get nice eats. Love authentic matcha? Then this place is for you. Authentic meaning in its pure, unsweetened form. They do supply syrup on the counter though if you want to sweeten it up. Win. Taking more than 2 years to open, Constance has one very important distinction that automatically sets itself apart from every other matcha establishment in town. They've imported mills from Japan, so they are the first in SF to mill their matcha in house. Win. Black matcha?! What the wha...? Apparently, the definition of "matcha" is "tea leaves that have been finely ground," so enter black matcha & red matcha, made by the same process as traditional, authentic green matcha. I was uber intrigued, I'd never had black matcha before. Win. We came on a Sunday, in the last hour of service, & sure enough there was a line. But, we only waited about 20 minutes. Hardly a deal breaker, especially given the introduction to a whole new experience. Win. No doubt they had a line all day. But the cashier was still friendly & helpful. Win. We ordered one of each (green & black) with oat milk (oat milk is the only dairy alternative). Even though I didn't add syrup, this green matcha had virtually zero bitterness. Clean, yes. Bitter, no. Not sure if it's because this matcha latte is 12 bucks a pop, but it was outstanding & I was happy, so worth it. Win. Black matcha (served iced). I love black tea with milk, so I knew this wouldn't disappoint. It's not necessarily strong so much as you can actually taste the black tea notes despite the oat milk addition. Malty. Roasted. It was interesting & comforting. Win. A destination spot thanks to all the buzz they've been getting, it was totally worth the drive across town. Ishi-usu, which is stonemill in Japanese, is one thing I'll try to remember. This old contraption is good for grinding tencha tea leaves, maybe other loose leaves. Suppose we put in butterfly pea flower petals towards the center; eventually grinding them into a bluish powder form. Fun, right? All it takes is to turn the handle right; slow in the first few seconds until you move a little quicker, but at a steady pace. Such a bright airy space after coming all this way to Outer Richmond! A perfect place to lay back and enjoy tea lattes and premium Taiwanese handcrafted oolong tea leaves. The latest pick-me-up wasn't Uji Matcha nor hojicha, which Constance Tea & Matcha currently have. It's black matcha, milled from black tea leaves! If Korean matcha from the Jeju Islands wasn't the best taste of the season, how about Korean black matcha? Its flavor profile in a latte form was toastier than hojicha. THIS black tea powder form will now be so much better than the old school regular milk tea made from loose leaf black tea. It's a bit of a compact space with some tables for waiting, but I wouldn't say this is the spot to socialize. In the back, they have their matcha milling machines that you can look at, but it's a bit tight with so many folks trying to take a glance. Between the two of us girlies, we got four drinks. I particularly got the Black Matcha Einspänner and the Usucha Matcha (which only comes hot in a 2 oz serving) to try out. The usucha matcha was nice, strong, and earthy. It cost $9, and if you're an avid matcha enjoyer who appreciates the taste, you'll enjoy its flavor profile. The Black Matcha Einspänner stood out the most to me. I regret not asking what makes it black, but what I really liked was how nutty it was, along with its creaminess and mellowness. I think it was the perfect amount of sweetness for me as well (the default is less sweet). Overall, if you are in the area, check this spot out! Been monitoring the construction of this space for well over a year, and it's so cool to see it finally open! Line was down the block and it took us about 30min to get the ordering kiosk. The folks running Constance are so nice and eager to share their passion about matcha with you -- they took the time to go over the menu, the different types of matcha served, and the selection process. The menu does include other types of tea and tea drinks besides the matcha-based ones. Pricing is on the higher side, but seeing as how they freshly mill the matcha in-house, I think it's worth the little splurge every once in a while. We ordered the freshly milled Usucha ($5.95), which is a shot of matcha. The matcha was a lovely, bright green like tender shoots in spring, and the profile had this wonderful and refreshing earthiness that reminded me of chewing on pine needles. Did not have any of the bitterness that lower-quality matcha has -- I also suspect it's because they brewed it at a much lower temperature so it didn't burn or over-extract. Forgot to ask, but I'd guess the brewing temp was somewhere 70-75C. There's a long bench with small tables inside that seat about 10 people in total. If you walk all the way to end of the shop, you can watch the stone mills grinding the fresh matcha. Fascinating and cool to experience what's essentially a farm-to-table match experience. read more

For a 2 oz pour, the matcha was definitely light where I prefer a deeper earthiness. If you are into lighter taste profiles then this may be for you. Love the concept of this place with freshly milled matcha but the drink didn't live up to my expectations at all. The freshly milled matcha simply tastes like what I would get from Starbucks, overall profile is lacking matcha flavor/umami for an almost $10 drink! Friend and I got here right around 10am on a wednesday and there was already a line. It cleared up after we ordered so the line was only about 10 ppl long. Their matcha mills weren't running when we were there btw. Tried both fresh milled matchas as lattes bc we are dairy fiends. Did a blind taste test of both pre mixing and the reserve matcha is VERY umami/thick/grassy/slightly astringent. Non reserve is a lot lighter but still good flavor, wonder if they use different amounts of matcha since one is much thicker than the other. However, once we mixed them in with the milk the difference was relatively negligible. Would just get the regular fresh milled matcha unless you're drinking it as usucha. There's some seating and small circular tables but not enough to work on fyi. read more

Premium matcha shop, made in house. Very unique and a premium service which you pay for. More than a comparable coffee drink like a double espresso. Definitely good quality matcha but you'll also include the whole experience. Tour of the matcha mill stone and description of what you'll be consuming. I guess "freshly milled" doesn't always translate to "good quality". A couple of people in our party who got the regular matcha latte felt it was underwhelming. I got their signature "black matcha" which is a misnomer because the drink has nothing to do with the traditional matcha that we all know. I had 24 hours in the Bay, and as a matcha fan, this was at the top of my list!! It was worth it! I wish we had a place like this in LA! We tried the freshly milled matcha, which was so fragrant and had such a vibrant and bright flavor. It was better than the regular match, which was still one of my top matcha lattes I've had. The black matcha is also super unique and is not too sweet (a compliment if you're Asian ). All the choices make it so hard to choose but you can't go wrong w any of them! We were lucky enough to get a tour of the place and learn abt the matcha milling process by the owner Bill. He is so knowledgeable and excited to share his love of w tea everyone. I wish they would open in LA!! But I'll def be back if I'm in town Tip: We went on a Sat morning at opening, and the line wasn't too bad and moved quickly.
