Awesome Steak House! The steaks were well priced on the menu and looked amazing. But the Hamburger Steak was calling my name. Cooked perfectly and so juicy with the the perfect amount of seasonings. It definitely doesn't get enough credit. The baked potatoes was soft and like a pillow on the inside mixed with butter and sour cream. I was in heaven. The hand cut (or so it seems) fries were delicious. Deep fried to a golden brown that was crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside, like all fries should be. The service was great and the atmosphere was wonderful. We really enjoyed dinner there. The waiter was extremely attentive and met all of our request easily. After a 12 hour drive punctuated with gas stops and pit stops, I had built up quite an appetite. I saw this independent steakhouse and so after checking in to the LaQuinta, we worked our way back there. The menu was an abbreviated one due to Covid. You could tell that social spacing had meant removing several tables. It was a pretty simple menu. Steak. Baked potato. Green beans and tea. All were just fine. Steaks cooked to perfection I had seen some reviews about their steak sauce being made out of vinegar. I let them cook the steak like they always do and asked to have a side brought to me of their sauce. The sauce by itself was pretty sour with vinegar. It is not meant as a dipping sauce like Heinz 57 or A1 sauce. It is used more as a grilling sauce. It was fine the way they use it and it has worked for them a number of years. They have a cadre of faithful customers. One cowboy hat wearing older fellow could tell we were newcomers and told us we were in fir a "treat". He was right. I'd stop there again. Conestoga has been the home-town steakhouse in Dothan for a long time. I will also say that their steak is the closest to the taste of a steak from off the grill from the house. Be prepared to spend around $20. They do put some kind of special sauce on their steaks. But the sauce is akin to au jus. For the sides, I recommend the fries. They are freshly-cut and have the at-home taste to them. There isn't much to the salad. It is lettuce, tomato, and a crumb or 2 of blue cheese that adds a zing to it. I will never turn down Conestoga but the reason I am giving it a 4 instead of a 5 is because when I go out and eat, I want something that does not taste like home. I want something I know I have to go there to a get a specific taste. Conestoga is way too close to home. The only benefit is that I don't have to cook it haha. Great staff. Just not great food. Should be on the door of this "Steakhouse" After landing in Dothan for a few day trip we were told by several people that this was the place to go for steak. We were told that this place has been here for ever and if there were one steakhouse we needed to visit this was the one. Boy were they wrong. We showed up at 4 pm as we heard that this place fills up fast. By 4:10 every seat in the place was full. We were very excited that we had found "the place" to eat. The decor is very old. The tables and chairs are very old. It is clear that there has not been a decor update in 30 plus years as the paneling on the walls would attest to. The staff first sat us next to a set of double doors leading to the kitchen that had we remained there would have ruined the meal. Imagine doors flinging open every 20 seconds while you eat. The staff was nice and was happy to re-seat us. There was a bathroom in the other dining room that was surrounded by two tables. Boy am I glad we didn't sit there as one of my companions who had to wait for the bathroom and could "hear" what was happening in there from outside the door which means the diners could also hear. Once we sat down we were greeted by a very friendly server who seemed happy to work there. At first glance of the menu I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices. I would later regret not taking this as a warning and leaving. Crackers and butter were brought to the table. This seemed low rent for a steak place but I wasn't going to waste my hunger on it. There were four of us at our table. Two of us ordered the rib-eye's and two of us ordered the filet's. The meal came with two sides. The first side was a salad that may have been one of the most plain boring salads I have ever had in my life. The lettuce was bland and the dressing seemed like it came from a huge industrial bottle that nobody cared about it's taste. Our steak arrived and I was excited to dig in. How can a place that is know for one thing all these years not be amazing. Not only was it not amazing, I would go so far as to say this was the worst steak I had had at a restaurant in my life and this includes Sizzler. It wasn't the way they cooked it, as the steak was cooked properly, It wasn't the brown sauce they put on it, that wasn't that bad it was that this cut of meat was about the furthest thing from Grade A as you could find. It had none of the juicy, fat and rich flavor that you could get with even a low priced Wal Mart rib eye steak. It was if this was the place where all bad steaks went to die. I tried the other rib eye at the table just to make sure it wasn't just mine. It wasn't. I also tasted the filet and it was about the same. It did not surprise me that the waitress offered, without asking, if we wanted more of the "steak sauce" that the steak was cooked in. It seems that this is a ploy to make the customers forget just how bad the quality of the steaks are. The broccoli, sweet potatoes and the the rolls were great. No issues. We shared a slice of cheesecake. I am not a big fan of cheesecake in the first place but my guests seemed to like it just fine. I know people who read this might think that I am some snob from Los Angeles who comes into town and badmouths a loved institution but I can assure you I have traveled the world and have been in 3rd world countries that serves much better food than this. If you are from the region and love this place. More power to you. If you are from out of town and have understand what great steaks taste like this place might not be for you. I like a little more blackened seasoning but the flavor was very good. The side salad was fine, just a little lettuce, shredded carrot and a slice of tomato. The broccoli was hot and cooked just right - dark green, not mushy. We went at 6:00 pm on a Friday and only waited about 15 minutes. There were plenty of wait staff so we had plenty of attention and my steak came out in about 15 minutes. Erin, our waitress did a great job and ensured we had all we needed. If you want atmosphere and wait staff singing between tables - don't go there. It is a family run business, interested in providing good food and friendly wait staff. From the outside, the building looks tiny and you'd never even know it's a restaurant. My dad travels around Alabama for work and he took my family there tonight. Apparently they have been voted to have the best steak in the area for the past 17 years straight. Let's just say, that award is 100% backed up by their steak. I got the 12 ounce ribeye and it was amazing. The boys got the filet and loved how tender it was. The sauce it was cooked in gave it such an awesome flavor that i didn't even need my A1 sauce. The staff did an amazing job of keeping the place clean. Dividers between booths and a very thorough cleaning between patrons made me feel safer than in a hospital. The Conestoga finally got steaks back to previous quality before Covid hit. The issue I have besides the price being double pre- pandemic ( probably explains slow customer base). When you spend $30 on a meal and your slow there is not reason to get old cold fries (mine) or cold baked potato ( wife's) and cold rolls with your meal. Waitress was great but the cold food turned me off. I've been going here for close to 40 years and live in Florida to boot- really disappointed. I've overlooked a lot for various reason last year or so but not anymore at these costs.
