I rarely leave negative reviews, but after spending thousands on what was supposed to be a…read morestraightforward spa coping replacement, I think it's important to share my experience. The project was estimated to take about five days. Instead, it stretched to nearly three weeks because one issue after another kept coming up. What became most frustrating was that I felt like I had to constantly inspect the work and point out obvious problems as they happened. The new spa coping profile didn't match the existing pool coping, but even worse, one half of the spa coping had a different reveal than the other half (see pics), the bullnose was noticeably uneven, extensive patching was required after the initial pour, and the mastic installation had to be redone. Every time one issue was addressed, another seemed to appear. The final, and still unresolved, problem involved the three spillways between the raised spa and the pool. During the project, the Castro team unnecessarily removed and discarded original spillway stone. They installed replacement stone, but after the spa was refilled, the spillways no longer functioned as they had before the project. Because of the way the replacement stone was installed, water that previously flowed fairly evenly across all three spillways now flows almost entirely through one, with little bit in the middle one, and pretty much no flow in the third. What disappointed me most was what happened next. I wasn't asking Isidoro to immediately fix it. I simply asked him to come back, look at the spillways with me, compare them to the videos from before the project, discuss what changed, and come up with a plan to fix it. Instead, after I had already given him the final payment, he told me it would cost another $1,500 to address the issue and he was too busy immediately to come fix it. He never came to inspect the work in person and on my last phone call with him, he told me to fix it myself and literally hung up on me. I understand that construction projects don't always go perfectly. Mistakes happen. What matters is whether a contractor takes ownership of problems and works with the customer to resolve them. That didn't happen here. If the workmanship issues had been the only problem, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. It was the combination of repeated quality issues, the need to continually monitor the work myself, and the unwillingness to come back and inspect a legitimate concern after the project was completed that left me unable to recommend Castro Pool Services.

What Camarillo with them where did is a common defensive move in service businesses: 1. Deflect - "We've never had complaints about Darrell." 2 itMinimize - "It's just wind debris." 3. Personalize - bringing up your job situation. 4. Blame the customer - implying I'm unreasonable. None of those address the actual issue: whether the service occurred. I asked them to come back and inspect themselves and to complete the service and then I'll pay the invoice. Otherwise I'm not paying and nor should I have to. We are having to replaster our pool 2.5 years later because of a very poor installation job. We also have multiple cracks in the new coping and the deco seal has also failed. They blamed everything on my pool maintenance company who has 20+ years of multiple pool maintenance contracts, many of which are still with him.

John made us believe that it won't happen again and guess what? That's right, the 3rd appointment is missed, now we're pissed. If it wasn't for my lady, he would have been off the job right there. So, we schedule a fourth and final appointment. They finally show up. Great, they're here!!! Not so fast. As we're watching more sitting than working, we also start looking at what's done. WOW!!! All you have to do is look at the pictures I've attached. These were taken AFTER we were told they were done. We call John to tell him our displeasure with the work that was done. John says he will be over the following day to look at the work that was done. The following day comes around and John shows up to inspect the work done. John states, wow, this work is not acceptable and that we might be a little nitpicky. Nitpicky?? Are you kidding me?? He says that he will have his guys out the following day to fix any of the issues that we have. Well, the same crew shows up and is refusing to do any repair work. John was actually arguing with his crew that things needed to be done correctly. After them bickering downstairs it was clear that his crew wasn't going to do anything. That's when my lady went downstairs and told John, you clearly aren't going to get these guys to do any work so maybe it's just better that we part ways now. John walked off the job not to be seen or heard from again. Now I know if John reads this, he's going to tell everybody that his contract was with my lady and not with me. First of all, there was never any contract written up, it was all verbal even after requesting a contract and a scope of work, which is required by law. I let that slide, thinking that John would do what he said. I could have very easily reported him to the CSLB for a number of violations. We finally had to get our lawyer involved as we had to pay another pool contractor to repair the horrible work that was done by this contractor. John ended up settling for the very substandard work. He and his assistant came out with a variety of devices and methods to search every possible source and were ready to dive into my full and very cold pool if needed. Over two weeks he would come by yet the dirt was still at the bottom. Then after he was here on Oct. 7th for about 30 minutes tops, the pool did not look any better. I tried calling him but the reception was bad. So I texted him to call me when he was in a better reception area. He did not respond or call me back. Finally I called him again the afternoon of the 8th. All he said is was the pool was too much work and that he was quitting. Up to this point the pool was not all that difficult. He just did not want to do some extra work when needed. He did not try to fix any issues, did not apologize for flaking last minute etc. My issue is that I told him upfront that I would work with him. I offered to cleaning the filter from time to time, vacuuming, skimming etc. to help out. All he had to do is call and let me know how I could help. Be honest up front and if things do not work out. Try to fix it before you just quit. IUf you have a simple pool with no issues and do not anticipate any issues I'd try him out. Otherwise stay away. He will just run out on you.
