ComputerSense - It makes sense to call ComputerSense First!

Computer Sense has built my last 2 computers. I own a small community paper here in this community,…read more and I do all of the graphics myself. My needs are unique, I need a fast, graphically intense computer that can also handle Microsoft spreadsheets, billing, massive downloads. My needs are hybrid- and Andrew realizes that a "one size fit's all" is not going to do what I need. Even more impressive- beyond his technological skills, Andrew is a really nice person. I have been in his store and watched as customers, neighbors, senior citizens, have come in with "locked up" laptops. They clicked on "something" and now have the blinking virus screen. He just smiles, opens up their computer and has miraculously fixed a few right in front of me. He knows their names. He makes them comfortable. They didn't need to call for an appointment 3 days from now. That's why he has been in business for so many years. If you need a computer, or need a repair, do yourself a favor and go to Computer Sense. You won't be sorry.

They have repaired several computers for me over the years and I value their expertise. This firm also carries a varied inventory of computer equipment, such as new and used laptops and printers. They also accept outdated electronics for either parts or proper recycling. Most recently, I took a new Lenovo Yoga in to have them insert the data from an older laptop and to tweak the settings on the new machine to my personal preferences. This included additional software programs for protection from malware and possible hacking. All the work was accomplished within a day. Overall, the work done is very professional and the service courteous.

I asked if that is a flat fee if they are successful or unsuccessful. He said it was. I asked in there would be any additional fees, he said no. He said if they have to mail it out if they can't figure it out then it would be extra. I told him to not mail it out without first calling me to approve or not approve. He also asked if I wanted them to put the files on a hard drive which would be extra. I said no and asked if I could bring my own hard drive to transfer the files. He said yes. I asked if I should just bring it at a later date to do that and he said yes. He told me it would take 10-12 days. On day 14 I still hadn't heard back so I called. The guy who answered didn't know what I was talking about and had to call me back. Another call where the guy seemed confused about what I was asking. At this point I lost the tiny bit of confidence I had with this place. He called back a second time and said they recovered my files and I asked can I bring my hard drive at 3pm the next day to get my files. He said yes. I arrive the next day to be told by the store manager that it will cost me another $75 to transfer files to my hard drive. I refused to pay and told him nobody said anything about a hidden data transfer fee. He said then I couldn't have my files I paid $162 for them to recover. I was so upset and he admitted it was possible his staff neglected to tell me 2 different times there was this hidden fee. He offered to charge me $50 not $75 for the error. Had I known upfront it would cost $237 not $162 I would never have hired this shady company. I am skeptical and think this is a normal predatory practice of this place

The Computer Mechanic - new sign night

    The Computer Mechanic

While I'm usually the techy in our home, occasionally I get stumped and have to call in backup…read more Fortunately for me, I stumbled upon The Computer Mechanic in Schenectady! Before I get into it, let me give you some background... In my home, an annual trend has slowly formed with the simple phrase, "Something happened to my computer". It started with a pricey Macbook, where liquid was accidentally spilled onto the device. The Apple store happily offered a fix that cost nearly as much as a new computer -- which led to me purchasing a newer Macbook -- only to have the motherboard die 9 months later with another hefty $800+ fix. So now we have significantly less expensive, and oddly more powerful Chromebooks! Well the other day, the same chilling phrase echoed in my home, "Something happened to my computer". I researched and tried everything I could find online, positive that I was following the right directions, but to no avail. So I decided to seek outside help (!sacrilege!) and came upon The Computer Mechanic's Google Maps result and website. I filled out the online form, and within minutes, I had a short and to the point response. It was after hours, so the next day I hopped into my car and drove over. Being an 80's Nerd myself, the business was exactly what I had hoped it would be. Quiet, lots of computers and parts everywhere, a beautiful wall of old motherboards, and uncomfortably bright glow of several monitors. The guy behind the counter took the Chromebook and said, "when do you want it back by?" To which I replied, "when could it be done? I mean, I have no idea how long it will take." He said, "it shouldn't take too long", and it was late afternoon, so I suggested the following day. Then I confirmed that I provided my email and phone number on the webform and left. The next day, I emailed to check in, and they said it was read. I showed up, cracked a few jokes that didn't seem to land, swiped my Credit Card, and was out the door in minutes. In all honesty, these guys were really great and seemed to know what they were doing. They were even running their "Wipe & Reload for $60" special, so it cost practically nothing compared to places like Geek Squad. It's definitely a no-frills experience. But when you just want to get your computer back up and running, without being upsold on a bunch of garbage you don't need, this winds up being the absolute best type of experience one could hope for. And because it was so inexpensive, I can afford to go to The Computer Mechanic instead of wasting hours trying to figure it out myself. The next time I'll absolutely be back for my annual, "Something happened to my computer" pilgrimage.
