They are cheaters and liars. They gave an estimate and changed it. We had a problem that involved micro soldering and we were told it would be $150 but then they bumped it up to 250 saying it was a difficult job. There are at least four locations in the area for Computer Answers - Albany, Schenectady, Clifton Park, and Bennington, VT. - according to the business card I picked up in the Clifton Park location. If you search online you may also see locations in East Greenbush and Brooklyn. I'm going to describe my experience only at the Clifton Park location. Attention: The phone number listed on Yelp is correct: (518) 383-0313. The number listed on their webpage and all paper generated documents at the Clifton Park store (e.g., claim checks & receipts) is incorrect. They list their business hours as 9 am to 9 pm seven days a week. This does not necessarily mean that they have a technician on duty during those hours. The Clifton Park location shares space with a Smoke Shop which is open during those hours. When I visited the store one afternoon to inquire about bringing my desktop PC in for repair, the employee I spoke with told me I could return that day with it by 6 pm. I did return by 4:30 pm and that employee was not there but a second employee whom I had observed during my earlier visit was able to receive my 3-year-old PC, add me to their customer base, and provide me a claim check. I also picked up one of their business cards from the counter and noticed the next day that it said on the reverse side that new customers could receive a 10% discount. CA makes a point of promoting free diagnosis within 24 to 48 hours. This was emphasized by the first employee I encountered. It being a Tuesday when I brought the PC there, I called them on Thursday afternoon to check on the status. The employee who answered the phone said they had not had a chance to look at my PC since they were very busy. When I asked when I might expect to hear the result of their diagnosis, I was asked if I had paid an "expedited fee." This was the first I was hearing about an additional fee, and it was explained that the fee would allow my PC to leapfrog over other customers who were in the queue. I wondered if that leapfrogging would apply to diagnosis, repairs, or both. I didn't ask, and I didn't inquire how much such a fee would be. I decided to give them until Monday, assuming they did not work on repairing computers over the weekend. Monday afternoon I went to the shop in person to inquire about the status of my PC. On this visit I met Dwayne. He pulled my order up on their database and explained to me what their diagnosis had revealed. He said that my rotary drive with all the software had a problem and needed to be replaced. I said I thought the problem was not with the rotary drive but with the solid state drive that stored all my data since a check disk analysis I had done was successful on the rotary drive but failed on the solid state drive. He assured me that their analysis was accurate, and they could start the transfer of the drive's content to a new drive momentarily. When would it be completed? He seriously doubted it would be finished by 6 pm when he would be leaving. When he came back to work at noon on Tuesday, he would call me. Not having received a phone call by 1 pm on Tuesday, I called them. Dwayne explained that they now had found that the solid state drive also had some sectors that had failed and that drive also needed to be replaced. The transfer process needed to run overnight. He would tell the other staff person to check it out in the morning on Wednesday, and if everything looked good, to reassemble my PC. He would call me when the work was complete. Not having heard from anyone by 1 pm on Wednesday, I called them. Dwayne said my PC was ready for pickup. By 2 pm Wednesday my PC was fully connected at home and the first thing I realized was that all of my data had not been restored to the solid state drive! Instead of cursing, crying, and pulling my hair out, I crossed my fingers and hoped that my practice of backing up the data on that drive nightly to the cloud would successfully now restore the missing files. YES!!! Let this be a lesson to those of you who may be reading this and considering that you can always rely upon someone else to pull you're as* out of the fire when you have a problem. I'm sure if I were familiar with repairing computers I would have saved a lot more money than the 10% on their bill. But you expect to pay them for their experience, available equipment, and the three year warranty that they provided. Either way, $441 before sales tax is either acceptable or unreasonable depending on your perspective. But what was that $18.87 service charge? Addendum: It's now Friday, and the PC has been working just fine since I picked it up on Wednesday and restored the missing data. The phone rings, and who is on the other end? Dwayne! Is he calling to ask me if I'm satisfied with the quality of their work? No. He's letting me know that they just realized that there were additional files that were available to have been restored to my solid state drive. read more

we got windows 11 installed and since then problems surfaced. Our printer is not recognized because the driver is not installed. We took the computer to the shop and they were unable to install the driver. We had a technician come to the house and he wasn't able to correct the problem. We made arrangements to have him come back a second time to try to connect as a wired connection, but he didn't come because he could not locate our phone number. We called and made another appointment for yesterday and got no call or visit. read more

This place is a trash can. Sold my buddy a MacBook for 500$ that doesn't work whatsoever. He didn't even have it in his possession for 24 hours before having to go back to the store. Now they've had it 2 weeks, it still doesn't work, and they won't refund him. Update: after a lot of arguing he was able to get a refund. I will not change my above statement nor my opinion of this place. I work IT and also used to work in a computer store. The fact it took multiple visits and phone calls to get them to agree to a refund is nuts. These guys also had a disgruntled employee post some of their other shenanigans costing customers a lot of money and in some cases their personal data. Stay far away from this place. At least at staples the services and products are guaranteed. read more

I spilled water on my 2012 Dell laptop and it died. The Geek Squad told me to come to Albany and when I did, they wouldn't even look at it because of how old it was. They told me to find a small repair shop to help. Enter Computer Answers. I called the store and spoke with Jake, who told me to bring my laptop right in. He said he would at least be able to recover the data for me so it could be transferred to a new computer. I really didn't want to buy a new laptop because mine has a lot of features they don't put in laptops these days (like a DVD/CD player). Jake called me later that night and said he would be able to fix it, gave me a price, and said he could upgrade me to Windows 10 (I had 7). I thought the price was great and gave him the go-ahead. He had it fixed within a few days and it works great! He gave me a new keyboard, mother board, memory, etc., and offered me a new mouse because he wasn't sure about the touch pad. I've got all my data, my laptop is working perfectly and even the touch pad is working now. I'm so grateful to Jake and his hard work! He saved me at least $800 on a new Dell that would have had minimal features. Highly recommend this place! Thanks, Jake!! UPDATE: Had my computer fixed by them and suddenly had a data breech where someone tried to steal money from one of my bank accounts. Called them because it was the only time the computer was out of my possession and they told me they don't see the data, only transfer it. Luckily, my bank and I caught the transactions before they went through (It was labelled Green Dot) but I had to close the account and go through the hassle of opening another. Don't want to suspect this company but it seems very suspicious that this happened right after they had my computer in their shop. I recently visited the store in Clifton Park and spoke with Dwayne and ordered a new battery and solid state hard drive for my laptop Mac computer.  I paid with my credit card and was told the parts should be in within a weeks time.  I did not hear back after a week so I did not call right away assuming a brief delay.  I called a week later and was told the hard drive was in but they were still waiting on the battery.  And, not to worry but we will call you when the battery arrives.  I did not hear anything so called again 2 weeks later, someone checked, the battery was still not in and they would pass the word so someone would follow up.  Another 2 weeks went by, I still had no phone call or feedback so I called again.  And again, someone would follow up and get back to me.  And again another 2 weeks went by with no response.  So now it's been 2 months since the original purchase.  That was it.  I called, finally reached Dwayne and told him to cancel my order and I wanted my money back.  That he and this business had completely lost my trust and I wanted no further dealings with them other than my complete refund.  He said he was going to call the supplier and find out right away .... and again I told him don't bother, I do not want your battery, just give me my refund.  He did not listen to me.  He called the supplier and got them to finally send the battery express delivery.  I again told him he needn't have bothered and I demanded my money back.  He said he needed to get approval of the owner and would let me know tomorrow.  Again I did not hear back from him after 2 days so I called and spoke with someone else from the store other than Dwayne, and was quite angry with him and said some things I should not have said.  After I hung up I called back and apologized to him because he was not the person who did not follow through.  He then called the owner apparently and said I could have my refund BUT ONLY AFTER PAYING A RESTOCKING FEE!  I told him you guys really need to work on your customer service to have the nerve to charge such a large fee after NOT DELIVERING on a service I paid for well in advance and did not come through with. NEVER use Computer Answers. They are incompetent. I was happily using Windows 7 but received warnings that I should instead be using Windows 10. I obediently took my computer to Computer Answers to have Windows 10 loaded. Days went by, and I became worried. I called, and they said unfortunately all my files on my computer were lost in the loading process. It was all gone. Everything. Family photos, books and articles in progress, many years of work, all gone. This is INEXCUSABLE. I am FURIOUS. What kind of operation is this? What kind of computer shop does not adequately back up files when and old program is removed and a new one installed? Now I have Windows 10 but an empty computer. read more

These guys are pretty cool. I brought in a laptop whose motherboard I had damaged with a botched repair; they did the job, but when I came out to pick it up I found they had also thrown in upgrades to a bunch of the components for free: 1. An upgraded version of the CPU I had on the old motherboard (i7 vs. i5) 2. A new case with a fingerprint scanner (my old one was chipped) 3. A new keyboard with a backlight (my old one was not backlit) The price was super reasonable, and they were pretty friendly. I think the one caveat is you should know a little bit about computers before walking in, just so you can make sure you get what you want out of the process. read more

Stay away from Computer Answers. In short, requested a custom built desktop with specific components including discs, brands, processor, etc. Agreed on price. I requested a written proposal with all discussed components listed to include models, speeds, capacities, type and generation of processor, etc. They proceeded to complete project without proving list of components. At pickup, I requested more info than listed on invoice and I was told he had to look for it. No problem with that. Paid for it, took it home and when I went to connect it, I noticed dirt on the power supply fan. Proceeded to open case only to find more dirt on mother board, cooling fan, graphics card and on the bottom of the case. The two discs were 2.5 in attached to the housing with Velcro. Not kidding! I have pictures. Requested refund and they refused, owner not responding despite four telephone messages in three different stores and emails to both personal email and business email. I know they have a non-refund policy but my contention is they did not delivered the promised product. Have filed complaint with BBB, warning you guys here. Will move on to contacting Google Business, Yelp, other social media sites. Small claims is not out of consideration except Courts are not hearing this type of cases. Gave them a phone to fix the screen over a month ago, we called them about 2 weeks ago and they still hadn't ordered the part, called then 2 more times and they still have no idea whats going, the part isn't in yet and most likely hasn't been ordered yet and i paid upfront. they seem to be giving us a run around every time, telling us they'd call is back, however that hasn't happened even once. hopefully they get themselves together and do the service, but at this point i'm not sure when that or if that will happen. read more

I was having problems with my computer - I called and a representative came to my home - I thought I was having one problem but he diagnosed the problem to be the hard drive in my 3+ year old laptop as failing. I had the hard drive replaced the next day - dropped the PC off at 10AM and picked it up after work same day! Hard drive replaced and the computer is working just the way it did when it was new with all of my files and data moved to the new hard drive!. I dropped my ps4 off was told they would be able to diagnose on the spot. I knew my disc drive needed replaced. when I get thier they say drop it off and we will call you in a few days and let you know our diagnosis and a price. Four days go by I call back and was told he would call back that day with diagnosis and price. Never calls. I called two days later and was told the need a blue ray disc because it played dvds fine. Which I knew and told them when I dropped it off. So on day 7 I go and pick up ps4. Guy still has no answers. As he is giving me my ps4 he is telling me he can take to Schenectady and drop it off to another shop. I ask him how much would it be. It's already been a week. He calls the other shop and price he gave me was 140-150. Told me it would take hours to do and they would have to solder new wires for the disc drive. Now I'm no dummies. If it takes you hours to take apart a ps4 and replace a disc drive you have no business working on them. It's a simple 4 screws. And thier is no need to solder anything. Myself and my husband refuse to go to this establishment anymore. Almost all the employees have talked to us both like we're idiots, and consistently try to sell us something that we don't need nor did we ask for. The last time my husband was there he was looking for scrap metal and told them exactly what he needed. They escorted him to their junk room and told him he'd have to dig out what he needed himself and then was asked by an employee to just give this guy $10 to get home. My husband had no idea who this guy was! Prior to this, my husband and I arrived there one morning for them to trouble shoot one of his gaming systems for him. This location was supposed to open at 9. We arrived at 9:20 and the doors were still locked and there was no one there. The employee showed up at 9:30 and told us to wait because he hadn't opened the store yet. 10am comes around and we're finally allowed in. The phone rings. He answered the phone and flat out told the customer that he didn't know what he was talking about and that "his price to pick up his computer had been set at 600" slammed the phone down and IN FRONT OF MY HUSBAND AND I called him a f***** retard.....real professional buddy.
