In my Yelp Ethics class at HCCC(*), one of our favorite topics is how to rate places we like but find it too pricey. The debate can get more fiery than a Comptons spicy chicken parm and there is no real consensus other than let's not compare places to dollar pizza. I certainly enjoyed that parm, as well as the BLT burrata. Comptons is full of creative permutations of main ingredients and sauces. Its brilliant market niche also helps it get into occasional trouble on the review front. Its deli-adjacent positioning is causing some folks to compare it to their bodega. But how is the BLT burrata at your bodega? My two visits here were inspired by time considerations, when "it's only a 35-minute wait for a table" wasn't an option. One thing I can say about Compton's, you don't walk away hungry. The size of the sandwich sandwiches here are ginormous. I like their breakfast sandwiches. There's always unique varieties. There's tables to sit inside, but it can be a little chilly if it's winter time. I suggest you buy two sandwiches and share so that you can try two of their unique concoctions. Pretty solid sandwich place in Astoria that was a bit of travel from the Blink Gym I frequent but it was worth the journey. Stepping inside the place has a lot going on, there is a Pac-Man Arcade 1up machine which I used to kill some time waiting for my meal, there is a large TV on the other side of the place which had The Flintstones on when I was there and the music playing in the background is enough to give a rush of nostalgia if you're a millennial like me. Not like golden age 90's nostalgic but the music playing was around the 2000s, basically music I've listened to as a teen and young adult so it's definitely a spot right on the nose for 80s babies like myself. The menu is pretty expansive in variety, though I already figured what I wanted. The New Yorker Breakfast Sandwich (classic Bacon, Egg & Cheese) and the Turkey Pesto hero. I'm trying to kick the habit of mulling over how much things cost in this day and age because inflation is nothing new. Still at first I thought 2 sandwiches, a can of soda and chips for close to $30 was a tad steep but I'll excuse it because that food was very filling. You can't really go wrong with anything you'll select here. Service was also solid. Props to the woman behind the counter who got my order done in timely matter. I got the cheesy egg n mushroom. It was just okay to be honest. I liked the saltiness from the cheese but the mushrooms weren't super great. I also tried their strawberry banana smoothie and that was okay! I'd still come back but I'd probably try something different off the menu. On a side note, the inside of the shop is really cool. This place was awesome! After walking around Astoria for a while, I finally decided to head inside. The sandwiches are almost all under $20, and they're all going to fill you up. I got Spencer's Cheesesteak, which was $16, and the sandwich was slightly shorter, but probably twice as wide as a subway sandwich. The place was super clean, and was a tile-floored, brick accented place. Very bright inside, with drinks on the side. They used to open at 8am and now they open at 9am. When I called at 9:08am no one answered and then after showing up and knocking on the window I am informed that the kitchen is still closed the door was still locked and the lady at the front told me to come Back in 30mins!! Great sandwich spot, a little elevated from your standard NY deli but not too pretentious or skimpy on the servings. A huge variety of hot sandwiches, I got the Spicy Chicken Parm and it absolutely hit the spot. Also has the classic Boyland soda range that really makes it a classic NY deli lunch for me. So I ordered the hamburger and fries for lunch today. I was kinda disappointed with the hamburger, you could have added some lettuce, onions and pickle . Instead just patties with cheese. For same price I would have ordered from McD's or BK. The fries were decent but not the hamburger. read more

Came to the one in Astoria this time around. Much bigger than the one in LIC. The sándwich I had I wasn't that happy about it. It was supposed to be hot but because of the fresh burrata it wasn't it made it cold and it was on the messy side. Compton's is my go to spot when I'm feeling extra lazy to find food anywhere else or when I just need a delicious breakfast or lunch sandwich. I typically get California for a "light" meal. I don't have any complaints from the multiple times I've come by. I've done walk-in, door dash, pick-up. I heard they're expanding to include seating so I'm looking forward to that day! read more

Really wanted to like this place due to all the good reviews but it really disappointed. I ordered the Spencer hot sandwich AKA the Philly cheese steak. It tasted good but for $16, the sandwich was lackluster. This is at most a $12 sandwich. If prices were lower I would give this place a better rating. I'm unsure why other reviews say the sandwiches are huge. They're tiny... I included a picture with a Roku remote for scale. If you want a good sandwich or a sandwich that's actually worth your money, go elsewhere. If the higher prices are paying employees a better wage or better benefits, I wouldn't mind paying a higher price. But nothing on their website indicates that. Won't be returning. read more

The Spencer. GOOD. The Meat on this Cheesesteak was bursting with flavor not being dry at all nor being alternatively greasy. The flavors of the Peppers & Onions were also pronounced blending well with the Meat. The BEST Cheesesteak I've had yet 'cause of the size and taste of the Sandwich. Nice and thick. RIP to one of the greats! This used to be one of our favorite places in Astoria. Recently they've expanded and opened a ton of new locations and the product has clearly suffered- quantity of the ingredients has gone down as well as the quality of what's in the sandwiches. The sticky tender sandwich was one of my go to orders and now they barely put any chicken on it. The chopped cheese has chopped all the meat out and you're left with mostly bread. Another one of our favorites was the grilled chicken burrata club- they're using lower quality chicken now that has this stringy consistency and they burrata is no where to be found. I never had a problem with Comptons being a little pricey before because the product was amazing. But after all the expansion and switching to all the branded bags and paper, it's clear to see they're more focused on expansion than quality. Such a shame read more

This was our first sandwich experience since moving to New York and I give them a solid 3.7/5! We were instantly drawn in by the menu, the flavor combinations are so unique and everything sounded delicious, it was hard to settle on one thing each! I decided to go with the spicy chicken parm sandwich with pesto added and my husband went with the chadie, a chopped cheese with mozzarella sticks. While I thought i would have the winning sandwich, it was unfortunately just too spicy to handle. Typically I love a spice you could taste but doesn't overwhelm the food but this was too overwhelming for me. The cheesesteak on the other hand was extremely flavorful and surprisingly not too much. I would recommend skipping the fries, they were lackluster and flavorless. I love Compton's so much. I've had the Reuben, tuna salad, chicken parmesan, and meatball parmesan so far. I really love their tina salad. Fresh, not too wet, and really silky. The chicken parm is also really solid and hits the spot every time. I am so glad they opened a second location in the heart of Astoria. read more

Usually, renditions don't work for restaurants, but the 2nd location of Comptons on 23rd Avenue is much better than that overpriced sandwich shop on 30 Ave. The seating and staff are better, even the sandwiches are better. We ordered the vodka meatball sandwiches, which were delicious. I ordered a coffee, and my partner a tea and a bagel. The seating is nice. However, there are no toilets, so we had to use another store. I do plan to return! read more

Massive sandwiches that are absolutely delicious! Being born and raised in Queens (coming from Whitestone where we have Cherry Valley/Christina's and Tony's in Beechhurst, to name a few), I've experienced a decent range of notable sandwich shops and Compton's is right up there with the best -- they have both classics and the kind of sandwiches you crave when you're absurdly hungover lol. The family-run Astoria sandwich shop just opened their second location when another sandwich business couldn't 'make it work' at the same space. Guess it was fate that brought the Compton's to this spot. Just meant to be for locals to feast on their savory sandwiches and even introducing new specialities, thanks to a bigger working space. I ordered their Rob sandwich, it was turkey , bacon, tomatoes, onions, avocado and, Aioli. The problem is that their Aioli is nothing but mayo. I called and the Queen on the phone told me it was their Aioli, made with egg, oil. That's MAYO. I can't eat mayo Aioli is made with garlic, oil, lemon , salt. 5 stars for creativity and vibe, with just a little too much williamsburg vibe for queens. It's hard to rate this place because there's so much variety. I can't resist ordering the weirder combinations, which it seems are designed to be innovative and so that you'll either love or hate them (i've had both reactions). They also seem to be missing key ingredients pretty often, maybe just my weird luck. Overall it's absolutely worth trying and I've enjoyed the breakfast more than the lunch. read more

Ordered the Tuscany, which is supposed to have a balsamic glaze, as per their menu. They must have run out of balsamic glaze, which would have been fine, and could have been communicated to me when I purchased this sandwich. Instead, they took it upon themselves to put a liberal amount of mayo on the sandwich. Both sides of the bread worth of mayo. Completely ruined the sandwich. I could not eat it. Very frustrating. I don't write reviews for things. I felt like I needed to in order to channel my frustration somewhere. I live in the neighborhood, and I'll think twice before ordering here again. read more
