Last Saturday, my partner spoke with Jim about a Honda Civic. Jim asked my partner to speak with John, who was in the office that day. When we arrived, John was incredibly friendly. He kept referring to my partner as "my friend," and showed us pictures of his recent trip to Ireland. He also immediately started talking to my partner as if the purchase of the car was a done deal. He accompanied us on a test drive of the vehicle. During the test drive, John mentioned taking the car onto the freeway, but then directed my partner back to the office after driving right down the street, circling a lot, and then driving back. When we arrived back at the office, John pulled out some paperwork and gave it to my partner. Again, he was acting as if the transaction was a done deal. When we started trying to negotiate with him, everything changed. "My friend" went straight out the window, his smile turned into a frown, and he said to us twice that he wouldn't have had us come all the way down there if he had known that we were going to try to negotiate. What car dealership expects customers to purchase a vehicle without negotiation? I had to bite my tongue to keep from telling him that he didn't have us come down there, and that we chose to come take a look at the vehicle. At one point, he pulled the old "let me go talk to my boss" routine and stepped outside for a few minutes. When he returned, he refused to negotiate. Needless to say, we did not purchase the vehicle. And also needless to say, we do not recommend this business.

I arrived to a shop that looked like an abandoned building, but inside was filled with beautiful classics. I'm only talking about this so that if anyone in the future decides to look into this company ahead of time, just know you are in the right spot when you pull up to a white, abandoned-looking building. Here's what this place did great, and here's where they went wrong: Right off the bat, when I walked in the door, they had the carfax report on the table and were very open about the 2 crashes the car had been in. I appreciated that. This 4Runner I was looking at also happened to have extensive documented maintenance, that was prepared and on the table for me to view when I walked in. We then took this 4Runner out to the shipyards near magnolia where I was given free rein to drive it around. This 4Runner was a manual. The clutch was seriously wrong, and it was noticeable. It did not have transmission issues, but the clutch pedal was not effective and it was tough to drive, so it was noticeable. We drove it around for a little bit and headed back to the shop where I sat down to look at the maintenance records they had available. This particular 4Runner had a lot of clutch work done, so I was concerned. I brought it up to Alex, and he recommended to take the 4Runner into their shop to get it fixed before they were to sell it. That was much appreciated. They didn't try to shrug me off and move on to another customer and try to sell a broken 4Runner for $14k to the next customer, they stopped, addressed the problem, and tried to move on. In my opinion, that's how business should be done. Kudos Here's where I believe they went wrong. They were trying to sell a 4Runner with 90% of the factory options for the price of a 4Runner that had 100% of the factory options. When you go on used car markets elsewhere, you could find that exact car for $8500-10k easily because nobody wants a 4Runner without all the 4x4 factory options. To make things worse, they were trying to sell that 4Runner with clutch issues. In my opinion, that is not how you do business. They had already taken the time to do repairs on the 4Runner ahead of time, the clutch pedal should've been addressed prior to listing or the price should've been lowered. I wish this team the best of luck selling that 4Runner, and I wish you luck on finding a car that's right for you. If you decide to come here, make sure to ask for Alex. He's about as stand up as a dealership salesman can come. I will still recommend this shop to anyone looking for specifics. To me, this shop appears to only buy specific cars that are in high demand due to rarity, price, etc. so they might have what you're looking for. I should also add that even though they had some questionable ethics, this shop was the most honest dealership I've been to in the last 3-4 weeks and I've been inside 7 different shops across the Seattle area this month. P.s. I ended up buying a truck of Facebook marketplace. I went to this shop with the intention of buying the 4Runner, but was turned off by them asking $13,900 for a 4Runner without the factory lockers and with clutch issues. You can find the same 4Runner on Facebook marketplace for anywhere between $8,500-10k because nobody wants a 4x4 4Runner without the factory lockers.

I bought a good used car here three years ago, and outside of oil changes and a few added fluids the car has gotten me to work and back home every time. Lucino and his family hand pick every car they sell. Although they are higher priced, they are worth it, because you can count on them. And should something go wrong, Lucino is quick to offer a free fix or at worst, charge a reasonable labor fee at cost, which would be rare if it should happen-- in other words, Lu is a cherry picker, and he likes cream puffs, both of which you will find here, but at this "grocer" of cars, there are no lemons. Lucino also finances in house for those who cannot go through the banks like me, and for that I am very grateful because nobody really likes taking the bus, and often the car will get you there four to five times faster. He pulled up five different luxury cars for me to test-drive--back-to-back--never once rushing me, and did it all with a smile. At one point another customer came in who was looking at a more expensive vehicle, and even then, Pat stayed focused on me and made sure my experience stayed the priority. That meant a lot. Pat is knowledgeable, honest, and someone you can trust in an industry where that can be hard to find. Have had bad experiences at other showrooms where some car salespersons have been pretty rude and tried using "wolf of wall street" tactics, but I was glad when I dealt with Peyman. He was very patient during the test drives and even stayed after hours till the finance department got free to begin the paperwork. Even the finance staff was fun and nice, despite working after hours. On the car pick up day, things were again smooth and Peyman answered all my silly questions. Despite being a loyal customer who has purchased multiple vehicles from him over the years, my recent employment at the dealership has revealed a side of Darryl that goes beyond the "aww shucks," "harmless little old man" routine he employs. The narrative began when I agreed to purchase a 1982 Datsun 200SX for a project car, with a down payment of $500 and a total cost of $2000. Darryl assured me that the car had no major issues and would be up and running soon. In an effort to assist his struggling business, I offered to work for him, not only to work off some of my balance but also out of genuine concern for the chaotic conditions of his shop and office. Despite my efforts to contribute positively and make him money by selling other cars on the lot, Darryl consistently refused to apply the cash payments he gave me for my work towards my outstanding balance, providing vague assurances like "we'll take care of it later" or "don't worry about that yet; we still need to get it running." However, when it came to the small commissions he offered for selling cars to customers, I insisted on at least applying that money to my owed balance, to which he reluctantly obliged. The breaking point occurred when promised repairs to the Datsun were continually delayed, and the car remained inoperable. Despite my attempts to schedule repairs, I was met with vague promises that never materialized. This led me to explore the option of finding a buyer for the Datsun who was better equipped for the project. When I informed Darryl about potential buyers willing to purchase the Datsun for up to $2500, his demeanor shifted. Suddenly, he claimed that the repairs needed were extensive, suggesting I take a different car and transfer the credit towards it. Agreeing to this, I opted to take a 1987 Chrysler LeBaron Coupe at his suggestion, a vehicle I had been helping him find a buyer for even before it was offered to me, as I am an active Chrysler LeBaron enthusiast and owner of a LeBaron convertible. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when, after agreeing to purchase the LeBaron, at his suggestion, Darryl deceitfully claimed he had no temporary license plates for multiple days and later changed his mind about selling me the car altogether. His objection was based on my intention to invest time and money into the car over the next year, enhance its value, restore its paint, and eventually sell it for a better price after I had some time to drive and enjoy it. This abrupt change in attitude revealed his greed and a complete lack of respect for our agreement and working relationship. Furthermore, his disrespectful remarks about African, Indian, and Asian customers or "those people" as he put it, coupled with a derogatory comment about potential "black" buyers for a Cadillac, or "boys coming up here that are just going to try to talk me down" were beyond the pale. This, combined with his manipulative behavior, left me with no choice but to reevaluate my association with University Motorsports. His refusal to take my payments for the Datsun and his attempt to renege on the LeBaron deal indicate a clear desire to monopolize potential profits over everything, even fair treatment of his own employees. He wanted to ensure that any hypothetical profit from these deals would go solely to him even thought every car he sells on his lot is bought for far less than $1000 and sold for $3 to $4,000 or more. This is about my employment and our dealings, I haven't mentioned the hiding of rust under spray paint, the high milage vehicles with leaky engines and transmissions filled with leak stopper products that will fail once you get home and he has your money. Buy with caution and plan for emergency because he believes "what they don't know won't hurt them." In our final conversation, he attempted to shift blame, claiming I hadn't even paid anything for the car and should have forced him to take the payments when he refused. However, it was evident that he never wanted me to pay for the Datsun because he would have had to fix it, and there was a chance I would have made a profit if I sold it and as a new car collector, I would have only sold it after I had a little fun in it and got to experience driving it, filmed and photographed it for my records. In conclusion, Darryl's actions have exposed a level of greed and manipulation that I never anticipated. I worked diligently for the dealership, only to be treated as competition rather than a valued employee. This cautionary tale serves as a warning to anyone considering employment or business dealings with University Motorsports. Exercise extreme caution and be aware of the unethical practices that may tarnish your experience with this establishment.
