Great brewery. Wonderful for kids. Lots of toys and space. Plus they offer wine and a fire pit.

This is my husband's favorite brewery in Raleigh, and I suppose I should go back and give it another shot. The place has a cool vibe inside. The time that my husband took me here, there was something wrong with my beer. It had this awful metallic taste to it and after a couple of sips it made me think of what it tastes like when you have blood in your mouth. After that I couldn't drink anymore (even though I HATE to waste beer) and didn't want a different beer because I just felt nauseous. My husbands beer tasted just fine, so we enjoyed the environment while he enjoyed his beer. I guess we should go back again, but if we do I'll definitely be asking for a sample before I buy a pint. read more

Great, local brewery. I sadly, have not had the beer that they make on-site as I've been going for a while before they had the permit to do so and found other favorites that I've just stuck to. But what I've tried so far has been delicious and the staff is great. I've come for several date nights, mom's night outs, and even afternoon hangouts with friends with kids. The atmosphere is great with lots of seating and games at every table. You can swap out games, bring your own, or play corn hole, giant jenga, or just drink your beer and chat. You can bring in outside food so when we've had MNOs here, we've often each brought a dish. We've also seen people have pizza delivered in. On Thurs, Fri, Sat nights they have a food truck that you can also grab your food from. Sometimes we do a little of both as they'll post the food truck calendar so you can see what's in store. If you want a main dish from the food truck but they don't have dessert then we bring our own in, etc. The walls are covered in chalkboard material so kids can doodle if you come in the afternoons. It's really a great spot for just hanging out with friends and drinking delicious, local brews. read more

Pros: It's a nice space, size/decor/vibe are all really nice. The beer is middle-of-the-road for the hardcore craft beer enthusiasts but I'd say it's underrated and perfectly enjoyable and good for a day or night out. Plenty of screens for watching a game but they don't dominate the room. Cons: The online food truck schedule is not correct, and employees seem to not know how it can be fixed. Like a puzzle no human can solve. Check Facebook or Instagram if looking for current food truck info, the Twitter account isn't used much. If you don't see anything, don't plan on a food option. read more

The space itself is cool, but no doggos allowed inside and the patio is barely shaded. Also, as someone who has recently become Gluten Free (not by choice), there was only a few wines and 1 cider to choose from. Any place that has free popcorn is the place for me. This new brewery won't be a secret for long. Head to the north side for some of NC's best brews. Compass Rose was working toward getting their own beers on tap when I visited 2 weeks ago. It's still so fresh and so clean clean and the bathroom was remarkable. The food trucks roll in around 5 or 6 and you are also encouraged to order local fare from some menus they have up front. I like the open space and am willing to overlook the fact that because they are dog-friendly and cannot have a kitchen. The unruly pups, however, made my visit 4 stars instead of 5. It's a great place for large groups. There was a huge birthday party but no wait because the staff was efficient as can be. Compass Rose will join the ranks in my Raleigh brewery rotation. read more

I wanted to love this place so much! So close, but the main reason for the visit was simply disappointing. The beer just wasn't good. :( Pros: * Excellent chill, yet fun environment. Family friendly. Dog friendly. * Food trucks on the regular (although we missed the one that night). * Ability to have food delivered there from anywhere you want (yay for pizza and postmates!). * Friendly staff. * Very clean! * Great band playing the Friday night we went. * Games on the tables (if you can luck into a table). Cons: * None of the beer was tasty. The house beet belgian was OK. Everything tasted sour and flat, and we tried several both house and other breweries. Maybe the lines need to be cleaned? * Tons of seating, but this place was packed and we had to stand the entire 3 hours we were there. I feel that 3 stars is fair because it's a BREWERY. My pro list outweighs the cons, obviously, but my whole reason for going was delicious beer. There was no delicious beer here. :(( read more

This is an interesting brew house going through some growing pains. It's located off the beaten path, but just north of the Triangle Town Center area. It's a pet-friendly and family-friendly establishment, with frequent food trucks parked outside, and plenty of board games to play at the tables. The place is open and spacious, with plenty of table seating. I've been there a half dozen times, and have had mostly positive experiences. They do have a real problem with queuing during busy times. At most places, serving is multi-threaded: you find an open spot at the bar and place your order. Here, everyone queues up during busy times, leading to long service waits and some customer disagreements. I've witnessed two aggressive word exchanges and one customer walk out that resulted from this arrangement. The place is also understaffed and impersonal, which is a real change since when they first opened. There are a lot of complaints about kids running around the area, and while it's true, I've never found it disturbing. I take my kids there, and we usually play Jenga or Rummikub at one of the tables. Some parents do a poor job of supervising their kids, so it can get a little busy. Beer selection is usually pretty good, with some taps dedicated to house beers, and the other taps featuring rotating craft selections. My two favorites are their IPA and the American Saison, with the IPA really surprising me with its malt/hop balance. On my latest two visits, there have been some carbonation issues with every beer I tried. It was too consistent across beers to be accidental, but I'm not sure what the reason could be. All-in-all, this is a nice spot, but they do have some issues (that could be addressed pretty easily). If I want to talk beer, this is not the place I would go, and I no longer go out of my way to visit here; but when I'm in the area, and in the mood for a beer, I still stop in. read more

They seem to be doing great (good beer and family friendly...all good)...but I had an issue with their ability to run a tab. I had 3 beers but when closed out they had 7 beers charged to it. I told them what I had and they said they don't track individual beers or sizes??? I don't know what they are doing...but even telling them about the issue. I was more than double charged. I may go back...but will not run a tab. read more

I've been here several times. There must be a kids soccer park close by because it is always full of unruly children. If you like to go out drinking and can't afford a babysitter. Bring the kids This place is for you. Beer is really good lot of good selections I give them a 5 on their beer. And being dog friendly, one on atmosphere. Stop trying to be chuck e cheese. Not sure who trained your staff, but if your patrons are able to bully your staff into catering to their music taste & kicking a performer off stage at a planned event, you may want to retrain your staff or hire someone with some balls. Multiple people that are fans of this performer and took the time to come to your event are all completely outraged at the level of disrespect and lack of professionalism that was shown tonight at your facility. You've left a big ugly stain on your front doors that will likely discourage other artists from subjecting themselves to a situation like this. read more

I wish I can say that I like this place because it's so close to my house and I can bring my dogs. The bar tenders have as much personality as a doorstop and they always make me feel like I'm putting them out to get me a beer. I thought that's what they signed up for? It's not just one bar tender, it has been all of them that I've had any interaction with. I'm also not a big fan of their beer and I do love beer! One more thing... all the kids running around like it's a playground is obnoxious. It's a brewery not a daycare... find a babysitter! read more

This is my new go to for a North Raleigh brew. First, amazing beer! Second, amazing space! Third, amazing service! It's the perfect trifecta. This place was perfect for our group of four last night. They had the game on the big screen, tons of delicious beer offerings, and everyone was super nice. There was a live band playing, but it was the perfect volume. We didn't have to scream at each other but could still enjoy the music. There's tons of free parking and the place was super clean- major bonus points. If you don't live in North Raleigh, it maybe a little bit of a drive, but it's worth it if you're looking for a great brewery. I can't wait to visit more and try some more of their beers. Side note, huge tvs so we were able to enjoy college football while we were out. read more

Compass Rose Brewery is great! I really enjoyed the laidback atmosphere & the awesome beer selection. I brought my pup too which was definitely a plus! (Dog-friendly places always get extra points in my book!) The only downside was the service -- my bartender was only taking care of 5 people because that's how many people were inside & she ignored me 3x's because she was having a conversation with someone else. No worries though, I'll definitely be back to this awesome place! read more

Had a birthday party here. The staff helped set up the tables and the chairs and generally worked to make the party a success. We brought in our own food and non alcohol beverages. The bartenders were great in suggesting various types of beer which I thoroughly enjoyed. Nice birthday party in a great facility. I love this newly opened brewery (mostly because it's right across the street from my gym) for a variety of reasons. First, the bartenders are incredibly sweet and helpful if you aren't familiar with many of the beers they carry. However, a lot of the beers are local so don't worry about not finding a good North Carolina beer you will like. They have plenty of tasty beers to fall in love with. Second, the spot is nearly perfect with it being right off of Capital Blvd. and pretty close to downtown Raleigh. I like it being off the beaten path since it keeps me from having to drive downtown. Third, they're always coming up with cool things to keep patrons coming in such as trivia night, pizza night and yummy food truck rotations. Fourth, the inside of the place is so pretty to look at. You can tell a lot of care has been taken to select the perfect compliments to their beer. I would have to say this place has one of the swankiest bathrooms I've ever seen in a brewery in Raleigh. So, if you're looking for good, affordable beer and a nice place to lay your hat, this place has it. Someone start a run club here! Or better yet, just get over there and drink ;) read more

Love the beer. Love the atmosphere, UNTIL the entire child population shows up for play time. You should scrap the name "brewery" and list it as "family beer house." Every time I come here, the kids are all over the corn hole boards and run around unattended. We were here for a friend's birthday and someone threw their four year old's birthday and there were over 20 kids. It's a shame, but we will be back. It will be after 8 pm though. read more

I stopped in here a few weeks ago and this place was one of the nicest brew pubs I've been in. Loads of seating and open space so it feels really comfortable in here. It's even open enough that they had some indoor corn hole boards set up where you could play a game. They had a lot of other games laying around too which can be fun to goof around with as well. At the time we went the beer selection was unfortunately all from other breweries as they had yet to receive their permits to brew their own but it was ok. They probably have at least a dozen taps running so when they do get up and going it will be interesting to see what they start brewing for themselves. Also, place is super kid friendly. One entire large wall is painted with chalkboard paint so the kiddos can draw to their hearts content. They are obviously "outside food" friendly since they have several local pizza place menus laying around so you could order in if you didn't fill yourself up on their free popcorn. I think one of the things that kinda set this place apart from other operations that are moved into old warehouses is that they did up the inside very nicely. It is clean clean clean. The decor is also very modern but simple. Can't wait to go back here again sometime soon. read more

I have to be honest. We loved compass rose that is until they put in a new rule that children are not allowed in the brewery after 8:00. We were there a week ago on a Friday and as soon as 8:00 came the brewery became a ghost town. We were told the regulars complained. I can't imagine the regulars make up that much of a percentage of their revenue so good luck with your new rule. I would not be surprised if this causes them to go out of business. After making the place so kid friendly to then pull a 180 on that approach is an awful thing to do so we will be taking our business elsewhere as will the six other families we go there with two times a month. Don't waste your time if you kids, they are not welcome. read more

I've set a goal recently to visit 50 breweries in my 50th year of life! Fun right? Well it's only as enjoyable as the environment allows. Compass rose is a really large facility, and a great variety of beers to try. However, the staff was unfriendly, gave poor descriptions of the beers and had no suggestions for a first time visitor. I really like this place. It's chill and my friends and I like to go there and play board games. Nice tables/ atmosphere. Solid draft selection too. Only caveat: they really need to provide a bottle list. I was trying to decide on a bottled beer and the bar tender informs me that there's no list but that each bottled beer ~$5. Alright. Turns out I ordered a $15 bottle and wasn't told until I asked to close out my tab. Really not cool. I should have said something at the time because that's honestly not acceptable. I don't think the misinformation was intentional; however, having a bottle list would have mitigated that situation entirely. read more

What a wonderful new brewery! We happened upon this place shortly after they opened and were able to celebrate an anniversary event in their space. The brewery is gorgeous with rustic chandeliers and long wooden tables. Once of the nicest brewery decors I have ever seen, but it still manages to have a laid back feel. There are games scattered on all the tables, and plenty of guest brews to choose from. The entire staff with Compass Rose was great to work with for our event. Incredibly generous and accommodating, some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They allowed us to reserve part of the brewery for our event and made sure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this gem in north Raleigh for anyone wanting a great place to enjoy brews in a beautiful space. read more

If I write this a few weeks ago, I would give it five starts, but they are slipping. The place is great. Every beer is $4.50. That is great in a day in age when place like to charge much more. Their selection is really good too (they carry some of their beer and others too). The place itself is an awesome space. Plenty of room. Games everywhere. The service and clientelle made me knock a star off. Seems like they haven't figured out how to handle large crowds. They try to make everybody line up at the bar -- even those who are sitting at the bar. Really strange. It has also been taken over by families. There are kids running around everywhere. Forget about trying to play cornhole. Nothing against kids, but it feels like Chuck-E-Cheese. They also allow dogs, which is really nice. read more

What a beautiful taproom and brewery space in North Raleigh! They're not brewing their own beer yet, but were sure to put on a number of Wake County and NC beers on draft. I enjoyed the Draft Line scotch ale on $3.50 pint night (can you keep this going when you pour your beer?). Big massive space, which allows for good conversation as it can be quieter, with several large nice wood finish tables with both bench and chairs with backs. We loved the jumbo table Jenga (not 2x4) and stuck around for a round of Scrabble. Upstate/Western New Yorkers will appreciate the serve yourself popcorn machine and cornhole (yes indoors but not too loud). Heading back for a trivia night tonight. Hoping to bump this review to a 5* when they put on some good beers. read more

This brewpub is a really cool place to go out on a date night. We've tried to bring our kids here a couple of times but ended up leaving without staying for a drink. There is enormous activity inside and our kids don't really like crowded places a whole lot, so it just wasn't for us, plus many of the parents are too busy enjoying their beers to watch their kids, so it's a bit more chaotic. This is the only reason I knocked off 1 star from a perfect score. During evenings it's a great and more subdued environment, perfect for enjoying some terrific brews you don't come across everyday. read more

This brewery stifles local creativity and is extremely unprofessional. Elementary level research is all that's required for booking talent, if they're not fitting for your place do not book and promise payment just to kick an artist off during a set because a customer complains. That action clearly shows Compass Rose puts profit above the community . Pay and respect artists it's not difficult. read more

If you are willing to put in the effort to find this place which is tricky in itself then you will be rewarded with a cool place to grab a relatively good beer. Compass Rose offers the same bar games that 95% of other breweries offer. You have your standard darts, Jenga and corn hole, nothing too impressive. The venue is cool yet bare. Came here on a hot Sunday afternoon when many patrons would like to have a final time to relax but unless your idea of relaxing is waiting in a long line because there is only one, incredibly slow bartender, to be served then I would most likely avoid the place... read more

With the exception of serving no food, this is a very nice experience. We went there with friends who came in from out of state, on New Year's day. It was not very busy as I think everyone else in Raleigh had hangovers, but we are just a little too old to stay up that late. We had a couple of different beers and they were excellent. The place is very clean and very well maintained. During warmer weather I could see spending some time outside on their picnic benches and eating some food from the Cookout or even from a food truck should they have any out front.
