Came here on the recommendation of my Barber NZ with my wife to get away from the kids. I was fortunate enough to get served by Tomas and Loni. Tomas was able to help me pick out a wine that paired well with the dish I wanted to try out which was the beef bourgignon. FYI they have a small bar with beers and authentic French wines - absolutely lovely! The dish was delicious and I really loved the atmospheres which made me feel like I was back in Paris. Every aspect of this place is what I love about small businesses. It's charming inside with a vibe that transports you to what feels like having a small meal in France. Ok, so I've never been to France, but that is exactly how I felt when eating here. Came here for a birthday on Sunday, and we had 2 LARGE tables up front. Pre-set Sunday Brunch meal, and it was delicious. EVERYTHING was amazing. The salad was fresh and refreshing, the Au Gratin, WOW, the Quiche(s) were cooked to perfection. Surprisingly, while I am a bacon connoisseur, the veggie quiche was so rich and flavorful. The Tartine was delightful, and the Croqu' Monsiuer was equally as delicious. The mimosas were a little on the pricey side, but you could tell this wasn't a $5 bottle of Brut. My favorite was the Kir Royal, which had a Raspberry Liquor. However, the star for me was a beer on tap, 1664, a French beer with great flavor and body. Loved it. Service was top notch. I believe the owners were on the floor along with 2 other ladies who were kind, charming, and the absolute cherry on top. It's service like this which makes regulars of these establishments. I think I've found a place I would love to stop by more often when I am in San Pedro... and you should too. A little breakfast outside the downtown street may just be an amazing time for you and company. Shout out to the Giant Lego Eiffel Tower up front. LOVE IT. read more

This is one of my favorite places in the neighborhood, but I usually only have wine and appetizers. The wine selection is top notch, probably the best in the area. The appetizers are also great. The pate is probably one of my favorite things to have. We came here last night and we had the pate beef salad and octopus to start. The octopus was the only underwhelming opener, with the octopus slightly overdone and the sauce underneath it super salty and heavy. Otherwise the other apps were great. My main course is where it fell short. I ordered the chicken, and I feel like if you're at a gourmet upscale place, they have to really do chicken well to justify even having it on the menu. I looked up pictures on yelp before ordering it, and it all looked crispy and well seasoned. The dish that arrived was not that at all. It was pale with no crisp for the skin whatsoever. The breast part of the chicken was a dry and not very tasty. It it was a little disappointing, but considering the wine and appetizers were so great, I didn't let the server know. I wasn't pleased. This isn't a review to throw a shade at an otherwise stellar place, more as a heads up to the restaurant if they read this that they should make sure that the chicken is on point always. My husband and I came here on a Sunday afternoon, for a day date after a movie. We absolutely loved Compagnon for our day out! We sat around 4:15 and the restaurant started getting busier and busier as we ate, they open at 4. We ordered the French onion soup, the octopus and the duck confit, all we would highly suggest, all were absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is lovely, I felt like we were in Europe! The service was great too. We will definitely visit again and I highly suggest this spot for a date night or a unique night out experience! read more

Stopped by Compagnon on a Thursday, right as they kicked off dinner service and I'm glad I did. No reservation, no problem. I was seated right away and had a glass of Prosecco in hand before I could even open the menu. I ordered the escargot, a small fromage board, French onion soup, bouillabaisse, and the lemon lavender posset for dessert. The food came out quickly, fresh, and full of that "I-just-took-a-quick-trip-to-Paris" flavor. I the escargot was a lot more flavorful than in Paris, I liked the kick of garlic! The owner even noticed the posset wasn't quite picture-perfect and graciously took it off the bill, talk about integrity and attention to detail. Inside the establishment also gave me a "family" vibe. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in San Pedro, because those mussels are already calling my name! read more

Food was excellent. Two of us had the steak frites, one had the Branzino (fish) and the other had the Beef Bourguignon. All great choices, but next time I'm get the BB! Wife was kind enough to give me a taste of it, and it was superb - exactly how the waitress described it! I would have preferred the BB "au jus" to be served with the steak frites instead of a peppercorn sauce. The restaurant is in Old San Pedro, I believe. Quaint little area with some old shops. They also have an outdoor area, but we ate inside. It was our son and d-in-law's anniversary and they brought out a little mini-chocolate mousse with a candle which was very kind of them. Overall good food. Cute interior. Small restaurant & had customers come all evening. Beet salad & octopus was very good. My friend really enjoyed the tomato mustard tart & the bouilliabaissie. For me, the bouilliabaissie was a bit too fishy & salty. Friendly enough service but can use more attentiveness. We ran out of water on the little carafe & the servers walked by several times without noticing it. I had to ask for more water then they seem to be more attentive. Maybe didn't have enough # of servers tonight. Basque cheesecake was fluffy & good. The small chocolate mousse they gave for my friend's birthday was good too. As the southernmost extremity of LA city, San Pedro has a sleepy and maritime vibe that differs from most of the rest of the city. Located in downtown, Compagnon is casual yet sophisticated. Starting with a warm welcome, one is impressed by the care that goes into improving your dining experience. We were most impressed with the food especially the beef bourginon that had the tenderness and flavor only achievable through careful braising. The branzino was also excellent and a bargain. The mousse au chocolat tasted of the cream and high-grade bittersweet chocolate needed for the unctuous creamy texture and alarmingly intense chocolate flavor that puts most of what passes for this popular dessert to shame. Enhancing the experience is Stella Liberté beer, my fave non- alcoholic brew. Though a long ride from the Westside, the excellent food and service combined with moderate prices justifies the long drive. Compagnon was incredibly delicious. It's strange how there are so few french bistro restaurants in Los Angeles. Compagnon does it right and has all the classic bistro dishes on their menu. I had a hard time choosing, but I ended up with the beef bourguinon which I was very happy with. It was tender and rich. My wife had the special fish, trout, which she said was amazing. I had a bite, and agree. Our friends were also happy with their dishes. For starters, we shared escargot and a dish of mussels and frites. If you like butter, these will satisfy that craving. We also shared the liver pate, which was also delicious. Finally, for dessert, the Apple galette and lemon tart which were also quite good. There is a few things I'd like to try next time, and the drive here from LB is so nice when you go over the bridges by the port. We are coming back for sure! The food is excellent. We have enjoyed everything we tried. And, yes there is an excellent wine selection. Allow the server to choose for you. Service is very good, everyone pitches in. The facility to cozy but not cramped. The seats can get a bit uncomfortable after a while, just so you know. Indoor and sidewalk seating The street is not too busy so it is pleasant in good weather. I love this place and have been eating here regularly since it opened. The food is wonderful, and I've tried everything on the menu. The specials offered nightly are always worth trying. On my last visit, the special was my absolute favorite fish, black cod, and it was served on puréed parsnips and lentils. It absolutely melted in my mouth and was perfect with a glass of Sancerre. The wine options are extensive and I usually seek the advice of (owner) Thomas for the best choice to accompany my dinner selection. I also belong to the Bistro's wine club, for more of Thomas' wine choices. I enjoy 2 bottles monthly and he never disappoints. They're always delicious, usually French, and never the same. The restaurant's décor is charming, and the bar is an inviting, well-stocked spot to sample wine and a meal, while sitting next to a few local regulars. Try this restaurant! This is easily my favourite spot in San Pedro, even in the South Bay. The ambience is inviting and very comfortably French. There is always soft pleasant music playing so you can easily chat without interference. There are no bad seats... comfortable tables, bar seating, and outdoor seating. The wine list is fun and extensive. Their food is amazing. They offer so many good dishes, both traditional and creative. Their onion soup is the best. And they serve a good espresso. Very nice medium sized French restaurant in San Pedro. The food is interesting & excellent as was the Pinot Noir wine on special. I had an octopus salad as appetizer which was very tasty but a bit too sweet but still very edible. For my main I had a duck leg confit that was out of this world with crispy skin & a satisfying layer of duck fat between the skin & meat. I was concerned about the fat but according to Google it is as healthy as olive oil with mono- & polyunsaturated fat (the good kind of fat!). My wife had mussels in a cream sauce which she loved. Portions are substantial necessitating the skipping of dessert. Service was attentive & friendly (at least for 2 of the 3 servers. Though it was filled, it was comfortably quiet (except for one lady who spoke nonstop at about 80 decibels). Highly recommended. read more

The first time I came, I ordered the BB. A MUST TRY. It will not let you down. Last night, we had one of their specials - 16oz ribeye with roasted potatoes and arugula salad. Which is big enough for two, but It was so juicy and flavorful, we ordered a second one lol. I feel so lucky to live within walking distance of this gem. You really do get the feeling of being in a quaint, classic French bistro when you dine there. Thomas is from outside of Lyon, France, the absolute capital of French gastronomy (sorry Paris), and his passion shines through in every dish. We had: Small Charcuterie Board with Pork Pâté Gewürztraminer Dessert Wine Duck Leg Confit Branzino Rosé & Pinot Noir Crème Brûlée The duck leg confit was tender and juicy with a delicious creamy sauce, potatoes and veggies. The Branzino was super flaky and soft, cooked to perfection. The crème brûlée was TO DIE FOR!!! The wine recommendations were on point and it was all worth every penny . Parking is a little difficult because it is on the street and there is metered parking. Staff is very friendly. Ended up ordering escargot for starters. And the branzino and steak frittes. First time ever having escargot. It was delicious. The garlic butter and oil sauce it came with was amazing. Along with the mini biscuits on top. The branzino was cooked to perfection. I asked for polenta instead of rice. Was very very good. The steak was also cooked to perfection. Highly recommend this place. read more

The food (and wine) are eclectic, beautifully presented, and tastes wonderful ... the service is also outstanding, and the atmosphere reminds us so much of France in the countryside and the cities. Here's an update ... The owners ... Thomas and Loni have also purchased the restaurant next door ... "The Whale and Ale" will be a pub with hamburgers, fries, etc. [And hopefully prime rib at least once a week] We know people are fickle ... and a restaurant can quickly fail ... not here. I decided to try this local spot after reading the good reviews. After all, I love a classic French bistro. It's a charming little place but I must say, I was rather underwhelmed. I ordered a classic, the steak frites and a French onion soup. Both were simply average. Nothing to write home about. In fact, at $39 for the steak frites, I left thinking it was overpriced. I get that cost of everything has gone up but if there isn't anything that makes me feel the dining experience is worth the upcharge and the food is something I can make at home and make it better, then there isn't much point.. Alas, this experience only made me long for the little French bistro next to my office back in NYC that had excellent food at much more reasonable prices! read more

First time here didn't know this place existed but very happy to have found it. It's located in San Pedro which is very close. The Service and ambiance was amazing. Such a beautiful relaxing atmosphere. It's a French restaurant which adds to its appeal. We ordered the charcuterie board that also came with a baguette so fresh and so so good.
