This review is for their happy hour: my bestie and I went to communion on a Monday (when happy hour is all night!) right at 4pm when they open. The courtyard to the elevator before going to the roof is adorable too. My friend was getting some work done there while waiting for me We got to the restaurant and pictures do not do this place justice. The view is beautiful! 360 degrees of the skyline, water, and mission valley. The decor and vibe of the inside was bright and summery. There's also seats outside on the patio to really enjoy the view We were sat at the bar where Angel (main bartender) and Armando took care of us. They were friendly and attentive. My friend got the tincho and guava margarita (seasonal) both were tasty and refreshing. I got a dealers choice where the spirit of the day was amaro (?) and I prefer more refreshing drinks, so Angel made me something that was so smooth, light, and it tasted like a cocktail I've never had before. I also got a smoke in the grass from their regular menu but subbed gin for the mezcal since I'm not the biggest fan of the smokiness. It was floral, herbal, and fresh. We also ordered everything from their happy hour menu minus the oysters. Our favs were the fries that were crispy, well seasoned, good portion. And the chicken skewer that was juicy, flavorful, and a little spicy. The nugz and fried artichokes were tasty but probably wouldn't get them again. We added the house brioche and it was delicious. The brioche was fluffy and sweet plus the combo of salt, honey, chives on top with the butter was chefs kiss. The views are great, the decor and ambience are also on point. Everything else was just ok. The wait time on drinks was pretty excessive. I know all the craft cocktail places are slow but this ran 20-30 minutes to the point where we almost cancelled orders. We did cancel our dessert order after waiting over 30 minutes, everyone was just done by that point and out of patience. We also were missing items entirely from our order, while other things got doubled up that we didn't ask for two of. I honestly think the servers had a really hard time hearing people because the music is so loud. We hoped the food would make up for how slow everything was, and some of it did. The duck was amazing, we liked the burrata too, the hangar steak. Absolutely skip the chicken tenders. We thought it would be a fun unique item and it was a major let down. Very small amount of caviar you didn't even notice it was there. Our tab was about $1,000 for 6 people. We had 3 entrees and 6 appetizers, and drinks. We returned to communion and their new chef is great! We highly enjoyed their last chef as well. We ordered a few items and shared everything. We also brought our own bottles of wine and the corkage fee was only $35 with a 2 bottle max. Brioche loaf- it had honey drizzled over it. It was good but it was sweet. Ahi Amarillo tiradito- absolutely fantastic. Little gem salad- so fresh and the shaved carrots - yummy! The chef gave us a melon salad (not on the menu on the website) that was so delicious, fresh and perfectly ripe. Hanger steak- very cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely and the onion rings were crispy and very good! Heritage Pork chop (I don't see it on the menu on their website)- it was juicy and tender and big! My husband had a fabulous dish but I can't remember what it was called (not on the menu on the rebate) but it was a crab pave- holy cow it was good. If you like pave and crab- when they are married, they are fantastic! Dessert- creme brûlée and ice cream with espresso over it. **This place has the best bread in San Diego** The bread in Communion is amazing. It comes out warm and soft topped with honey and salt. The butter is sweet. The bread is a bit sticky but it melts in your mouth and it's just so tasty. I only wished they had a cup of coffee so I could enjoy it properly. The rest of the meal is really good too. The chicken nuggets are amazingly good. It's again comes out hot and soft and so flavorful. The zucchini on the menu is the most different but it tasted fresh and Smokey. I went here with a small group to celebrate a birthday. Parking is street parking so plan ahead. You first enter downstairs on the ground floor, where there is a large seating area and a hostess stand to check in. The hostess was very nice and said we could either wait downstairs or head up for our reservation. Since we were early we decided to sit downstairs while we waited for our reservation time. We took some pictures and played a game they had on the table. It was a card game where you ask each other questions to get to know each other better. The questions were very fun and a nice way to pass the time. Once we were ready we took the elevator upstairs to the rooftop for the restaurant is located. It's not a huge space, but very nice. We sat in the corner near the ledge so we had a great view of the area. The server came over and was very nice and went over the menu with us. It's not a huge menu, so unfortunately it is a bit Limited. They do make sure at reservation to ask about dietary issues or allergies, and they review that again at the table to make sure nothing you order interferes with that. We decided to order the bread and the steak frites. The bread was delicious and you definitely want to eat it all. The steak was good and not chewy. It wasn't the best I have had but it was still good and the flavor was nice, nothing too overpowering. The french fries were good as well and made fresh. We also ordered drinks, I went with the Sadie Hawkins which I definitely recommend if you like an old fashioned. It had cherry, and cola reduction, and was a very good take on the drink. Prices were a little expensive but definitely not the most expensive in the area. The Vibes are nice and coming for a sunset dinner like we did is a good idea for a special occasion. My April is off to an amazing start! Last night my girlfriends and I had a rooftop dinner celebrating one of the gal's birthday. We came early and were able to snag one of the free parking spaces in a residential neighborhood 2 blocks away. We were early for our reservation and while waiting for the birthday girl, we took advantage of the beautiful entrance that separated Communion from its sister restaurant, Paradis. Between the 3 of us, I'm sure we snapped about a hundred photos, and more when the 4th member of our party arrived. We were escorted to the elevator where we rode up the to the top floor. The entrance to the restaurant was very welcoming and had the most beautiful ceiling. We were seated at a corner table and had a spectacular view. To start off the evening, we each ordered a drink. I was the designated driver, so I ordered the Pink Moon. One of my friends didn't want the mint that came with her Aurora Borealis, so I added them to mine and it made my drink even better than it already was! If you like pomelo and don't want an alcoholic drink, then I recommend giving it a try. I enjoyed its refreshing taste. We ordered a brioche for the table and can honestly say we could've easily devoured one for each of us! It was coated with honey and came with a side of whipped butter. Make sure you order this, you'll thank me! For my entree, I ordered the Market Catch. The fish of the day was salmon. The salmon was perfectly grilled, juicy on the inside with the skin still crunchy. It was served over a bed of jasmine rice and surrounded by yuzu dashi butter sauce, pickled daikon, turnip, beech mushroom, and toasted sesame. The dish was beautifully plated and cooked to perfection. I was very pleased with my dish and my friends each tried a piece of salmon and agreed it was a masterpiece. I have a bite of the steak frites. The skirt steak was cooked medium rare, just how I like it. The meat was packed with flavor and the right amount of salt. The fries were addicting, but I was good and only had 2 pieces. We ordered the Pistachio Entrement for dessert and the birthday girl got a smaller version of this dessert on the house. If you like Dubai chocolate, the wafers used as the crust gives it a similar taste to Dubai chocolate. I'm sold at pistachio and dark chocolate mousse. I watched my girly figure and only allowed myself a few bites of this incredible dessert. It took some serious willpower not to eat more or to get one all to myself! We had a few servers tend to our table and they all did a great job making sure any crumbs were dusted off the table and water glasses promptly refilled. Our evening was perfect and we definitely want to come back for brunch! They are very busy so make sure you reserve a table in advance! As a decades long resident of Hillcrest/University Heights it's been challenging to watch all the ugly boxes of mid rise buildings going up all around us and The Sasan was certainly one that turned my stomach that it's pepto bismol color did not sooth. It took me 21 months to finally suck it up and try Communion out. Happy hour is my favorite activity so I arrived at 4:10, ten minutes after they open. Coming in at that time was perfect because we got the best bar seats in the house and the parking was not an issue (a nice little block and a half walk). The view of downtown and the bay is so lovely! The bartender (Angel) was super friendly and made a delicious gold rush and old fashioned! The food menu was decent but could use some fresher options (not as much fried stuff) which is the only reason why I didn't give this review 5 stars. Don't get me wrong, the artichokes and spiced fries were tasty so if you can tolerate fried food get them. Australian Winter Truffle Pasta - Still dreaming about this. Absolutely divine. Yes, it's $50, but if you split it with your table, it's a must-order. Filet Mignon - Perfectly cooked medium rare (if you order steak any other way, we can't be friends ). Tried it with a bite of the truffle pasta and it was HEAVEN. Vanilla Bean Cheesecake - My favorite dessert. The gingersnap crumble, poached pear, and honey caramel combo was chef's kiss. WHAT DIDN'T WORK: Steak Tartare - It's my favorite appetizer ever, so my standards are high. This was good but not the best I've had. The bread it came with was mental though (in a good way). Local Line Caught Swordfish - Dry as hell, unfortunately an absolute pass. The cannellini bean stew had maybe 3 beans total (lmao), but the broth tasted like artichoke and was actually good. THE SERVICE: Daniel G was THE BEST. Attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely cared about our experience. The views of San Diego are stunning, and the space has been designed beautifully and thoughtfully, plus getting to see the planes fly by is always fun! I've now been twice, once for dinner and again today for brunch with a group of gals, and both were such a treat. For dinner, the sourdough was amazing (no like seriously worth it), the steak frites was perfectly done, and the Basque cheesecake with caramel sauce we all fought over to the last bite (still dream of the caramel sauce btw( Brunch was just as wonderful. I came here for drag bingo and it was one of the best experiences I could do on a Sunday brunch day. The host was fabulous, entertaining, and fast paced. The fresh focaccia is great, especially if you sandwich it with the steak tartare, butter, and aioli 10/10 Crudo was yum as well. Why 3.5? I ordered my filet mignon medium rare. It had a real nice char on top so I thought maybe it's even more done. But while cutting it with my butter knife, it was definitely raw. Returned it and tried the truffle pasta. (Which was actually a "truffle Mac & cheese") As the server placed the dish in front of me, I smelled the strong scent of chlorine. I thought maybe it's the dish itself? No, it was the black truffle. Manager came out and said maybe I'm just not a fan of their truffle and it comes in fresh every day. I am definitely a fan of truffle and every dish I have tried has never gave that scent. So now, as much as I hate complaining at restaurants- I get raw meat. Then I get bad truffle. What am I supposed to do? Whatever at least their dessert was good Cute rooftop bar, nice atmosphere. The decor is very cute, and the views of downtown San Diego and the ocean are definitely a highlight. My friends and I shared several dishes: - House Spiced Fries (2/5) - Housemade Focaccia (4/5) - Pasta Salad (3/5) - Fried Spanish Artichokes (3/5) - Hamachi Crudo (4/5) The fries had a curry-like spice and came with a basil pesto aioli, but they weren't my favorite. The focaccia was solid and enjoyable. The pasta salad had good flavor, though I wasn't a fan of the noodle texture. The artichokes were a bit soggy, but I did enjoy the sambal aioli they came with. The hamachi crudo had great flavor. It was served with kiwi, passion fruit, habanero, and lotus root. It was one of the better dishes we tried, though the hamachi itself was just decent. Just came here for brunch for my friend's bday! It was super good and service was great. Love the aesthetic! My friends ordered ordered some adult drinks, and the Kyoto coffee which I think they liked. I got the pink moon which was a refreshingly light grapefruit drink with tajin on the rim, I liked it! We ordered and shared among the 4 of us: the hamburger, the short rib hash and the French toast. I loved them all but I think the French toast was my fav and then the burger, but my friends loved the short rib hash... they thought the burger was too heavy and needed tomato or lettuce. The view is beautiful but we got hot about 3/4 through our meal since it was a warm morning so we were happy to wrap up after about an hour. The food came out in great timing, very nicely played. This is always how I check out the new places in San Diego, try out their happy hour and plan to return to check out the full menu. We had drinks and some appetizers that were offered. I thoroughly enjoyed despite doing this review almost 4 months after my visit. However, I do recommend it for the view and ambience (you have to take the elevator to the restaurant. It's not a Mister A's view of the city but a view of Mission Hills and surrounding areas. The restaurant sits atop the pink condo bldg and they have an affiliated resto/cafe below that have special nights (like paella). Overall, I will try the restaurant next time too. read more

DEALERS CHOICE ($12) - Japanese gin and yuzu. Yuzu infused cocktail. Seemed to be the popular pick at a glance around with everyone sipping from the same looking glass. This was a citrusy and sour kind of drink since I was looking for something fruity this was recommended. Choose widely, will this pair well with your meal? For me, it didn't. MUSSELS ESCABECHE ($28) - confit garlic and tomato, basil, toasted sour dough. I was expecting seeing the shells but this was served with no shells and a lot of mussel meat! The mussels were cooked good, nice and tender and easy to swallow after minimal chews, but some of my mussels did have grit/sand. The broth was a little tangy and acidic from the tomato sauce but the basil flavor toned it down but another sour flavor from the sour dough. Love the bread and how it rafted even better when dipped into the sauce! Will note, didn't pair well with the Dealers Choice drink.. too many sour and citrus going on. We came after a trip to SeaWorld...without much planning, it was easy to get a table inside. Then we saw the views of the rooftop patio and asked to be moves. They were really nice about it and moved us after we'd already settled in. Overall, this place has great vibes for a date night or girls dinner. I wouldn't say it's the best place for kids since there's no kids menu but I did ask them to modify the pasta dish to be a mac n cheese with no truffle. Sadly, my kid did not enjoy fancy Mac n cheese. He actually did like the steak and veggies. We asked if they had a birthday thing for my son and thought it would be free like is sometimes convention??...but was not. Should have known. Be warned! Check your bill - for me it was just a difference of a dollar, but still questionable that I was charged more than what was listed. Stopped in for a drink before a dinner reservation across the street on Christmas Eve, despite it being their happy hour hours, they weren't offering HH (maybe because of the holiday?) which was disappointing. read more

When we saw a spot open up for drag bingo brunch, we knew we had to snag it. We were so glad we did. We were greeted by the friendly staff and sat at the bar inside as that's where bingo was being held. We were greeted with their Tincho drink which was quite tasty. I did the mimosa flight. The flavors were very fresh and they are light on the juices! Be warned (in a good way), one flight definitely got me there. I got the bibimbap breakfast. I would definitely not call it authentic, but it was delicious. My wife got the French omelette and she thoroughly enjoyed it. They had several gluten-free options for her. It was a great energy and fun vibe at bingo. Obviously a lot of energy but that's what we signed up for. We will definitely be back to have brunch outside and enjoy the fantastic view from all the seats in the restaurant. read more

Came here for dinner this past Friday night and had such a great evening. The view from the patio is obviously amazing, but the food was really delicious too! Had the lamb, octopus, chicken nuggets, black cod and the cheesecake. All great. The service was also 10/10. We felt very well attended to but not so much that it was overbearing or annoying (as can sometimes happen). Our server's name was Daniel and he was amazing. I hope management reads this because that guy deserves to be recognized--he's great at his job. Will definitely ask for him next time. :) read more

My friends and I came for HH on a Wednesday afternoon! We did make reservations and were seated right away. HH is only at the bar or outside standing area fyi. Surprisingly, I found parking fairly easy on the Main Street. The views are absolutely beautiful from the restaurant and the little patio is so cute when you first walk in. The service was fantastic and everyone was so welcoming and nice. The cocktails and appetizers were delicious! Definitely would come back again. Food/cocktail review: Dealers choice: (4/5) We tried two different variations and they were pretty tasty! The bartender made one with a mocha (made in house) that I wasn't a huge fan of but it was still yummy! Gold rush: (5/5) I loved it! Super refreshing and balanced. Fried artichokes: (3.5/5) These were just OK. The batter was good but something was off with the artichoke, can't put my finger on it. It wasn't our favorite. Rosemary bread rolls: (5/5) YUMMM. They were so soft and flavorful. Delicious with the butter. We ended up ordering 2 of them. It only comes with 2 rolls. Chicken skewer: (3.5/5) These had potential but they were really dry. It is only a single skewer, so we ordered 2 to share among the 3 of us. Pork wings: (5/5) These were my favorite. They have great flavor and were tender! The sauce was delicious. Great portion for sharing. Pasta salad: (4/5) This dish was just OK. I'm not a huge fan of olives and I felt like it had olive juice flavor. But overall, refreshing and flavorful. This is an interesting review. I gave it a 4 stars not because anything in particular was fantastic. I think it's a four star because everything was just good. Nothing wowed me but nothing about the experience be it the food, drinks, view, wait staff, elevator ride, energy in the place etc. was terrible. Because they did nothing wrong. I feel like it's four stars for me. We came during restaurant week. When you enter, you pass by a coffee shop and a patio. Look for the elevator to your right to go up to the restaurant. You're immediately greeted with the front of house staff. We didn't have reservations so we had to sit at the bar. The bartenders were semi busy. It was a full house but they weren't necessarily running around fulfilling orders left and right. Bar seating was super comfy. It was a U shape. I ordered off the regular menu and they ordered from the pre set menu. We ordered the following: Lamb lollipop which had a zaatar crust, vadouvan curry yogurt, frisee, and mustard vinaigrette. It cost 36 dollars. It was beautifully presented. Flavor was somewhat there. You can taste it was well salted but I was searching for more than just salt and I couldn't quite name what seasoning was used if any. The crust was nice. But dont expect a crunch. About 5 lollipops came in it. Coconut Milk Poached Fresh Catch which was served in tom yum broth, with tomatos, mushrooms, chili oil, and coriander. It's gluten free. It was light and easy on the stomach. If you're a hungry person, it won't fill you up but you'll be delighted with the broth and the mushrooms. Visually its a pretty dish. Lots of color. Teriyaki Glazed Pork Belly as an appetizer with pickled zucchini & red onion, and topped with sesame seeds for 26 bucks. You have a sweet and savory dish here. If it's one way or the other, you have the pickled zucchini to help cut the taste for you. Its a tasting rather than a small plate in my opinion. But probably my fav dish of the night. POG Panna Cotta (passionfruit, orange, guava) was served in a cute little dish. The combo of tart with sweet with creamy was a refreshing end to the meal. Mussels Escabeche was a super pleasant dish. The aromas was intoxicating. The basil, tomato, and confit garlic were great. For 28 dollars it was a little steep but for good dishes, you have to pay a good price. Its served with toasted focaccia bread. Escabeche is a broth / marinade. No parking lot so we parked on the street. It was late Sunday evening so we found one right in front of the place. Vibes and views are 5/5 but the food was very, very disappointing. We went their for our anniversary on a Tues. When we got their they had a little table marker to let our servers know it was our anniversary which was nice. We reserved on the terrace and the view was sooo nice. Highly recommend. For food we got the heirloom tomato salad, the chaat potatoes, the tom yum soup and the POG panna Cotta for dessert. The tomatoes were not good. All different levels of ripeness. The flavor was so mild for being heirloom. And the sauce they had with it tasted fishy to me. If you've had chaat before from Indian restaurants, don't order it here. This was a super sad interpretation. The potatoes were nice and crispy and thinly sliced which was different. But all the flavors paled in comparison to what you would expect for chaat. They had a chutney which had good flavor. But it felt like the dish had just chutney and yogurt. The yogurt was like a thick, plain Greek yogurt that was on the bottom of the dish. The tom yum soup was also a much more toned down version of the original Thai version. They also had it with Opa instead of sea bass which we didn't like since the fish ended up being much firmer and didn't soak up the sauce as much. They also put a sweet coconut cream on top of the fish that felt weird to me. Dessert was fine but nothing to write home about. At the end of our meal they gave us small, complimentary champagne which was a nice touch. Overall we would not go back for food. Maybe for happy hour or drinks. read more

Came here for February 13 valentines three course which had the same items on the normal menu. Atmosphere:5/5-like the lights, most of the decor, entrance, staff, service, etc. Menu selection/range: 5/5-fits several diet types. Bathroom:3/5- not a fan of black toilets and dim bathrooms. Could barely see myself in the mirror. Only three stalls. Food:3/5- I got the pave (5/5), cod(3/5), Black Forest trefoil (4/5), Paloma mocktail (2/5). Pave could have used more crab but was so good I could have eaten a larger portion for an entree. I would try a different entrees, the cod was good but the rest of the plate was lacking-spinach was. Super salty, baby turnips were odd, slime-like... flavors didn't seem to go together for me.. plate felt dull and wet-swamp-like, compared to other entrees I saw others devour. Mocktail seems flat and lacked zinginess. Overall nice date night. I think I would return for brunch or alcoholic drinks. I'd stick to apps or entree sharing. read more
