Great cocktails and great food! A fun collection of cocktail options and great selection of food.
We had a fantastic time at Happy Medium last night! The kimchi fried rice was amazing. It was a Saturday night, so we had to circle the block for parking a few times. The service was excellent- we had multiple servers make sure we were okay throughout the night. It can get a little loud at night if you're having a one on one conversation, but it's great for a big group!
Super cool bar! The whole vibe is cowboy aliens, which is just really funny and unique. I love the garage doors that are always open to let the breeze in and allow you to sit half inside, and half outside. I got the kimchi fried rice and it was outstanding! Our server also came over to our table a ton to make sure we were all good. Great night out!
Unique cocktail drinks. I love the laid back, chill vibes of this place. It can be pretty crowded on the weekends (maybe because everyone knows that they have good cocktails!) For a while they had "99 problems" which was a Thai iced tea with banana cocktail or something like that and I wanted to try it, but never made it to this place. When I did, it's already gone! Argh!!! This is one problem that I really wanted to have but never gotten.
Chopped cheese was amazing! Have heard great things about the rest of the menu. Service was so friendly and sweet. Cocktails were well-made and not too sweet. Loved the disco balls and Christmas lights on the ceiling.
Walked in on a Friday afternoon to order food to go. I looked at the menu ahead of time and and choose my items- unfortunately I didn't have a chance to place an order beforehand. I highly recommend you do so if ordering takeout. I ordered the: Chicken Tortilla soup- just ok Philly Style Roast pork sandwich served with broccolini - pork was delicious Pastrami pie- cheese forward and a bit greasy Curry fries added chicken- delicious Crispy mushrooms - fun The items above were all served with sauce on the side which was great! The takeout packaging was nicely done, I got home with no spills. The only issue I have with Happy Medium is the fact their site/media page states takeout available. They must not get takeout orders often because they don't have a waiting area. I awkwardly found myself sitting at the bar waiting for my food. A quick "we'll text when ready", "we'll find you when ready" " we'll bring it to you when ready" "please stand over there and we'll bring it to you when ready..." Etc .. It's a busy bar; and seats at the bar should be for those drinking not waiting for food. Am I right?! So yeah some instruction on where to wait for takeout orders would be wonderful. For them and us. 5 stars for the chicken cutlet caesar salad wrap. It was great quality and proportions. I would advise going during lunch like I did for better service, prices, and food. Outdoor seating was nice.
I'm sad to be writing this but I just visited happy medium for happy hour this week with my friend and was excited to check it out. There was a margarita option as well as a margarita pitcher option which apparently consisted of different ingredients. My friend asked if she could get the margarita modified without elderberry since she was allergic, and our waitress told her she couldn't and said that she could only get the margarita pitcher if she wanted it without elderberry. So, we got the margarita pitcher which was a mistake. It was by far the worst margarita I've ever had and I've had my fair share of bad margaritas. It didn't taste like a margarita at all but instead more like really bad flavored water (with a slight hint of lemon). On top of that, they filled up the pitcher entirely with ice. When we mentioned our concerns to the waitress, she was annoyed and didn't do anything to try to help or make our experience better. So we ended up pouring it into a separate cup to separate the ice from the drink to avoid diluting it further. I'm curious if other people had a similar experience with their margarita pitcher or if I just happened to catch them on an off day. I'm all for checking out new happy hour spots, but it's safe to say that I will not be returning back to this establishment, which is truly a bummer considering how busy and popular this place usually looks. Fun neighborhood spot with great prices and happy hour! We came on a Tues around 5 and it was packed. Even then we were greeted right when we walked in and the whole time service was great. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The space isn't huge but we were able to find a spot right away. They have happy hour from 4-6 mon through Thurs and 3-6 on Fri with both food and drink options. I got a hazy IPA for $6 and my partner got the mini version of their espresso martini for $7. Love that they use Saigon coffee since they're right next door. We didn't get food but it looked like they had some tasty options. Even drinks on their normal menu are very reasonably priced around $13 with some good brands of liquor. We'd definitely come back!
I've been wanting to try this cute little spot for happy hour and so glad I finally was able to go! The staff were so sweet and friendly. There was no wait, we were seated right away. There's bar seating and booth indoor and outdoor tables available. Parking is usually tricky in this area, but we got lucky with a spot right in front. Food/drink review: Buffalo sliders: (4/5) They were pretty tasty but the chicken was a little dry and super tiny. Kale salad/fries: (5/5) Surprisingly, the kale salad was delicious!! The perfect amount of dressing and no bitterness. The fries were super yummy and crispy. Hot dog: (3.5/5) It wasn't my favorite. The hot dog itself was juicy and flavorful but the toppings weren't my favorite. Baja blast slushee: (5/5) SO good and refreshing! Perfect drink for a nice hot day. The cups are also fun! Ward 8: (4/5) This was pretty tasty and more on the sweet side. I'd order it again. The zlatan: (4/5) This is basically just an old fashion. Definitely a strong sipping beverage! Cactus cooler: (3/5) It wasn't my favorite and the flavors weren't what I was expecting!
North Park casual restaurant/bar that is must to visit for happy hour! My gf and I came here for a night out, stopped here first for some dinner and drinks. They have lots of seating but they seem like they'd get full quickly depending on the day. We sat outside and got service quickly, very kind ladies too. I order the chicken buff lo sliders, a kale Caesar salad with fries, and had two cocktails. All on their happy hour menu ranging from 8-13 dollars! In my opinion a perfect meal Loved the food, loved the drinks and the vibe. North park is such a great place for drinks and chats and Happy Medium is my new fav too!
No need to go to Taco Bell cantina for an alcoholic Baja blast freeze! Late night happy hour after 9 or 10pm as well
If you're looking for a bar that serves food after 10pm on a night out, this is your place lol. My friends and I were so hungry on a Saturday night but didn't want to settle for a fast food place. This spot was close to the place we were staying. It's a cute little corner bar, funky decor and old movies playing. Very clean and they have a bathroom. Not too crowded - it's a sit and chit chat spot, not so much dance. We got fries and some of their boozie slushies. Fries were good. Their ranch is really good, and it was funny drinking out of the kiddy cups lol. Strong drinks!
Best server EVER... We found a 1 top on the patio. She stopped by within 2 minutes on a busy Sunday, got us set with menus and described the Sunday smashburher specials. We opted for a chopped cheese and the Caesar salad wrap. Both were delicious and LARGE (bought the second half home!!) We completed it with the fries (heads up they are the coated French freis..I'm not a fan bit they were seasoned well) We enjoyed the bubble, a perfectly dry Cava! Located next to Lou's Deli (in partnership with). Street parking only, some metered. Located across from Saigon coffee. Lots of seating inside and out. Sat at the bar so service was quick. Tried their breakfast hoagie - Tots were good but egg mix was meh. I wouldn't recommend this one. The drink I ordered was super bitter. read more
Pretty loud but a cute dive bar vibe You can sit anywhere you want and the staff will serve you which is nice They have a cute happy hour menu including a girl dinner - kale Caesar salad and fries And other small yummy looking appetizers like meatball sliders and TJ Dog (bacon wrapped hot dog w/ pico de gallo queso and avocado crema The bartender was friendly and staff were also pretty friendly Affordable happy hour prices and tasty food And street parking in north park so depending on the time parking can be easy or a challenge but there's a paid public parking lot across the street Would recommend read more

We were out on a Friday night walking around North Park with no set dinner plans -- just seeing what caught our eye. We had our dog with us and happened to pass Happy Medium right as two tables opened up on the patio. It was around 6:30pm and the place was packed -- inside was buzzing, and outside was just as busy. One of the patio servers came right over to clear and reset our table, then brought menus. I wasn't planning to drink that night... until I saw the "Tiny-Teeny" -- a mini dirty martini. It was perfect: just enough to enjoy without overdoing it. My boyfriend ordered a margarita, which he said was fine but nothing special, so he switched to beer for his second round. For food, he went with the chopped cheese -- basically a burger but the meat is chopped up, which was a fun twist -- and I ordered the roast beef dip. I went with the roast beef. I ordered the BBQ sauce on the side because I had my eye on their honey mustard for the fries (huge honey mustard fan here). Turns out, dipping the roast beef into the honey mustard was even better than the BBQ for me. Highly recommend if you're a fellow honey mustard lover. Both sandwiches were excellent, and the fries were crispy and hot. Service was solid given how busy it was -- the patio servers were clearly hustling but still checked in and made sure we had everything we needed. The crowd was mostly groups of friends catching up over drinks and food, and the whole vibe was lively and fun. They also have little pup cup cones! Great drinks and happy hour menu! I had visited Happy Medium about a year ago for cocktails and really enjoyed them (try the bluegroni or one of the slushies). I returned to try the happy hour menu. I really enjoyed the old fashioned and tini dirty tini. For food, we tried the chicken parm sliders and the Chicago dog. All very tasty. The service was quick and friendly! It's a fun and lively atmosphere. read more

Are you fking kidding me right now? Pretty rude to show me such an optimal dining experience in this economy. However, given that we all will likely explode in nuclear warfare in the near future, I will be spending my retirement fund here on a weekly basis. (Its reasonably priced so dont take this the wrong way). I digress, If you are looking for a good time, or a will to live- I would recommend! Staff lovely too. One time i got in an accidental tiff with a server on a busy friday nite because I poured my own water from the server station. She gave me attitude about it and to that I say: 100% acceptable/ im sorry you had to work given your trying circumstances (being a woman) ! read more
I visited for the first time for happy hour. I arrived at 3 so there's no issue finding a parking spot near by. The place is spacious and I liked the open air setting. My friend and I sat at the bar. The service provided by both staff (don't know their names) was friendly and helpful. I ordered a Tiny Spro-Tini. It's like an espresso martini. It's tiny but tasty. My friend got a margarita. It looked like many people ordered a pitcher of margarita. We also ordered buffalo chicken sliders and kale Caesar salad and fries. The sliders were ok but i really liked the kale salad and fries. The price is reasonable for the portion size. I would go back again. read more

We were just wandering the street for a bit and one of us said we should get a cocktail and enjoy the sun, a woman near us on the street recommended Happy Medium and said we had to try the pickle beer. Who were we to say no? The place is popular, with quite a few seating options and a welcoming, fun atmosphere. We were seated quickly and had a super fun waitress. We all shared the pickle beer, agreeing it probably wasn't a drink by itself beverage, but one we'd have with others. We also all had some great cocktails and the table shared the corn dogs. Not gluten free for me, but worth sneaking a single dangerous, delicious bite. We all left agreeing this would be a place we'd be coming back to. read more
My wife and I love this place, perfect place to have a drink with your mates. They always have different "slushee'" Never encountered any bartender/waitress(or) who wasn't a vibe. This 32 weeks preggie lady was craving Happy Medium! Yes it's a bar vibe (sooo let me feeeellll somethinggggg) but they have amazing food as well! I was able to get the NA Aperol Spritz, which just felt so perfect on a summer day. One of my favorite cocktails from here (yes before pregnancy) is the "Super Grass." Missing those flavors: mezcal, lemongrass, mango, pandan. My husband ordered that this time and also "cactus cooler." He loved both of them. Both have unique flavors! It's always a fun atmosphere to sit outside and enjoy a drink! The food portions are great size and good to share a few things. We split the kale caesar salad (good even if you don't like kale), beef sandwich & fries! Love this spot and everyone is always so fun working there! read more

Word to the wise: DONT SLEEP ON HAPPY MEDIUM. Essentially--It's a bar with excellent food. Plain and simple. My party and I ordered the chopped cheese sandwich with tots, kale Cesar salad with chicken, and the San Diego fish n fries. Everything was 10/10. The fish n fries (fish n chips is my favorite in all of SD! Super crunchy with a great sauce). I also ordered the espresso martini with tequila which was super strong lol. Not mad about it. Came here for the first time which happened to also be their second year anniversary. So first off congrats on the continued success. I ultimately try to of their drinks one of which was recently added to the menu. It is not 100% sure if it will stick around, but I had to try it. That one was blue Monday. Definitely had a more bubbly sweet side to it, but there was a bit of an aroma taste afterwards. The other drink that I got was what I thought was Ward 8 but I think I accidentally was given something else. It was a good drink, but definitely on the strong side which meant it's more to take slow sips of. I didn't try any of their food but did see others getting entrées which helped make the place smell really nice. Do you keep in mind that The outside patio does not remain as open as the inside. Mainly since they are in a residential area. Completely understandable but definitely good to know in case you are sitting on the patio or are wanting to sit on the patio after a certain time. They will let you know so you won't be caught off guard. read more

For me this place isn't a top option on my list in North Park. It gets really packed simply just overcrowded. Doesn't matter how many individuals come in here they let everyone in even if it says it handles just a certain amount of people. I find that also the waiters do a walk through and keep circling even if your drinks are full and ask the same questions, like I felt like I couldn't have a conversation with my table because I was getting asked if everything was okay when you just came by two minutes ago? The food isn't that great. Drinks to me are very generic. I felt like I was being more sold on alcohol but maybe I just simply wanted to eat. The staff is nice though. Prices are definitely reasonable. read more

Life was giving me lemons so I decided to make it into a whiskey drink by coming to Happy Medium on a Wednesday night. Life instantly became better because the tv had great things on it. The service was quick and super engaging and present. The energy was nice. And the drinks were fire. It wasn't overly loud and the wait time was little to none despite it being about 60 percent full. Came with my homeboy and we ordered two drinks a piece. He went with beer which he thought was pretty standard. I had the Ward 8 which had bourbon, tang, lemon, pomegranate, bitters and tang salt. That was the winner of the night. I followed up with a drink from the holiday special menu which include beers and shots and hot toddy's etc. I went with the Brooklyn amber lager and a fireball shot and it was a good combo. Complimented each other well. There's a lot of open air so you'll get a nice breeze but they do have a covered outside area with some heaters so you get the best of both worlds. Parking is trash. It's on the corner off of a busy street so head to the side streets and hope you find some in the neighborhood. Good value for the money. And the spot was visually appealing read more
Return visit to sample the menu. It did not disappoint! Came on a Sunday afternoon with Saigon coffee in hand. The Happy Medium was teaming with patrons and dogs. We snagged the last table in the patio and perused the menu. Notice they collaborated with Saigon Coffee in their cocktails and serve lunch items from Lou's deli in the adjoining property. After lunch they serve their own menu items which I'll have to return to try. Today the same lady waitstaff greeted us and were still on point with service and a smile. I ordered the pastrami sandwich on rye and a pickle beer. The richness of hot pastrami washed down with a briny pickle beer resets your tastebuds for the next bite. This was a tasty twosome to say the least. I also had a bite of my son's chicken parm sandwich. Fried chicken breast cutlet topped with mozzarella and a spicy vodka marinara spinkled with parm was also a big hit. The tangy, spicy, crunchy, cheesy goodness of this hot sandwich was so comforting on this chilly afternoon. This time we brought our dog who was befriended by many and given the complimentary puppichino to her delight! Thanks for money well spent. I'll be back soon read more

Food and drinks were surprisingly yummy! Didn't think too much of this spot before coming in but super glad we did. The chicken Parm sandwich was delicious -- chicken was breaded perfectly and the sauce was so tasty. The espresso martini, super grass and the scooby snack slushee were all balanced very well. I really enjoyed the pandan flavor in the super grass cocktail. There are only a few big tables inside. About five seats at the bar and some small tables outside. I can see this place getting crowded. One plus is that there are two bathrooms. Pricing is reasonable and I'd definitely come here again. read more
My wife and I came here after spending the afternoon in Balboa Park. There was a table open when we arrived and they quickly took our drink order. The cocktails are unique and we enjoyed both of our drinks. We ended up splitting a kale Caesar salad and Italian sub for our meal. Both were delicious. The sandwich was served on a hoagie roll. Hoagie sandwiches can be dry if you don't add enough mayo/mustard, but they did extremely well. The sliced tomatoes were perfectly ripe and really helped round out the sandwich. The salad was great too. The everything bagel seasoning worked really well with the Caesar dressing. Would definitely come back when I'm in the area and will recommend to friends. read more
