Another excellent visit at Key and Cleaver! We stopped in on a rainy evening, just after Happy Hour. The place was packed and the cool skeleton "Fred" was posted up at the front door to greet us, so so cool. We are always welcomed as soon as we arrive and we find that to be very very customer service oriented. Everybody that works here has a smile on their face and we appreciate that. We chose a seat right next to the door and there were so many people that it was just an exciting time to be in the restaurant. We love their Rosemary fries and everything about all of their burgers. I love that they have the option to have salad because I'm a salad person but today I specifically wanted a good burger. We ordered the Smashburger, which is two smashed patties with cheese, medium, plus added avocado, and a Western burger medium. We also ordered the No Alcohol IPA and a Ginger Ale Soda. Our food came out hot and yummy. delicious. Our food was so delicious and we were so stuffed that we couldn't enjoy the brownie afterwards. That's OK because we love coming here and will definitely be back. The vibe here is positive and everybody is very friendly and customer service oriented. On this visit, we saw families and other people coming from a formal event. Also, just a whole variety of different customers that really wanna have a good experience. Really enjoyed the Double Smash Burger, veggies on the side (additional $1.50). Loved their super hot fries, although wish they were a little more well done. Their chicken wings with the garlic Serrano was doused in minced garlic and very much welcome. Their house-made ranch was so good that we ordered extra (additional $1 each mini cup). I would definitely have no problem jumping on board if Key & Cleaver was the engineer of the best burger of all time train. The Swiss Mushroom hit every note with umami from the mushrooms, funkiness from the Swiss cheese, brightness from the garlic aioli, and some sweetness from the fluffy bun all complimenting the perfectly seasoned and juicy beef patty. I took my time with this one to savor every bite. Don't forget the crispy outer/fluffy inner rosemary salted fries. Then how about you wash it down with a citrusy, piney West Coast IPA from Burgeon called Treevana. All around flavor overload in a good way. I came in with my wife and 6 year old son just after 9 on a Saturday night and we were welcomed warmly by Chris, who gave us outstanding service through our entire meal guiding us through the menu and assuring we had everything we needed including crayons and puzzles for my son. Super unsuspecting spot on the edge of city heights heading towards college area. You almost wouldn't even notice this joint is here til you walk in and it feels like your almost transported to another neighborhood. Inside it feels like a cozy sports bar. There's a number of tvs positioning in front of one long bar. We were greeted by Chris who was super friendly and told us about where their meat is sourced using only grass fed grass finished beef. You could tell there is a lot of care going into their ingredients and what they make. They've got a number of sauces made in house like a homemade ranch and Chris brought us a spread of the different sauces to try out. I went for the smashburger which is always a good mark for comparison of top burgers. This burger has no frills, just cheese and grilled onions, and just the way I like that. Burger was cooked well, juicy but not greasy like smashburgers can be. Grilled onions were grilled down perfectly. Just the right amount of cheese to not drown out the meat. The meat was flavorful, with a clean beefy taste. The bun was a nice fluffy brioche, my favorite. The fries were also bomb, very unique, kinda like a cross between a chip and a fry but still crisped up well. Can't say I noticed the rosemary, but they were still solid nonetheless. There was a cool selection of beers on draft and it looked like they had some clever cocktails on the menu. I wasn't looking to drink when I was there, but I definitely wouldn't mind coming back for another burger and a beer. It seems like a homey place to come where they know your name, and you can catch the game with the other locals. Can't say it was my favorite burger of all time or my favorite part of town, but you can tell there is a lot of care being poured into this place. I had to go for seconds , it is a spicy drink. I usually don't order spicy drink but this drink blew my mind; it was quite tasty. We also ordered some burgers. I ordered the black & blue burger: it was blackened seasoned beef patty, topped with blue cheese crumbles & buffalo sauce. On the side it had lettuce, tomatoes, onion and pickles. My friend ordered the burger of the month which was the "Pastramarami" which had beef patty, provolone cheese, sauerkraut and brown mustard. Both were cooked medium and burger meals came with a side of fries. We both liked our burgers. It was very fresh, the ingredients and fries were cooked perfectly. Burgers had lots of flavors. The Pattie's are from the Perennial Pastures ranch in North county and grass fed. The fries are insane, crispy, flavorful and compliments the burgers. My daughter was craving a burger and found this place right near her house. Located on busy section of University Ave, finding parking is the hardest part.of trying out this hidden gem. Although the buns felt a little small, the burgers were plump and juicy...much thicker than your typically find and perfectly cooked. Although they were under-seasoned, you got to taste the beef which was a very nice locally sourced grass fed beef! Say that in one breath! The garlic aoli was fantastic with a nice hit of garlic. We both enjoyed our blue cheese and mushroom Swiss burgers so both get our recommendations. I hate to say it, but the star of the show was the rosemary french fries. They are perfectly crisp and perfectly seasoned. They were kind to bring extra sauces without us asking so that we could try on or burger or fries but I preferred THESE fries without anything, and I'm a big fry dipper!
