I like how this area has seating inside towards the very back if you wanted to stop in and work on something or simply just sit and enjoy your time there. Second time here. Pros: * phenomenal location. If you're a parent or a dog owner, I don't know many other perfect coffee spots than this. There's a great park with minimal through traffic that is facing the coffee shop. * the coffee is near perfect every time. I've had four drinks from here and all of them have been wonderful. Great espresso extraction, and my milks have never been burnt. * If you do use the lobby next to it, it is dark and perfect for study or work. Cons: * the staff is never friendly. Both times I've been here. The staff has been really condescending and aloof. Today I asked him a question and he didn't even acknowledge me. The only reason I don't come here more often is because of this terrible service and hospitality. * I really wouldn't mind the price, but especially for the service you are getting, this place is radically overpriced. If they had a really great hospitality and friendly baristas, price would not be an issue. I feel really stupid paying for this expensive coffee when I'm treated terribly here. I'm not a picky coffee gentleman. Black tea, iced or hot, that's my vibe. I used to be an aeropress / pour over guy though. The food here, that's what crushes all. It beats Izola imo. While Izola leans towards the sweeter side Communal has some of the best savory breakfast item's i've had at a smaller coffee shop. Avacado toast - incredible quality. Bread is not overly toasted, not flimsy and mid. It's perfect. The avacado is not all brown and poopy, its bright and perfectly ripe. The crushed red peppers on top make it. My sausage sandwich was the best I've had. We all like McDonalds sausage mcmuffin things. Imo that's an 8.5 out of 10. This is a 15 our of 10. Similarly sized, 3x flavor + there is some maple butter club sauce or something. It's not necessary but it adds a nice touch. The bonus here is the playground. It's primarily for little ones. 3 and under. My nearly 7 year old son lost attention quickly, my almost 4 year old daughter was entertained for a bit. Lots of little 2 year olds though doing their thing. One downside are the tables right outside the cafe and no organized line system. Super small downsides though, but noticble. read more

What a lovely space to do work or catch up with an old friend over coffee with. There is plenty of street parking, but be sure to get here early to secure a spot. The coffee shop is right across the kid's park and athletic work out area. It's a half outside, half inside place. The menu is simple and the coffee is made to order. My fiancé got the Gold Coast and I had the honey lavender latte. The Gold Coast wasn't bad and was a tad bit sweet. The lavender latte was perfect. The cashier also gave us little passes that we had to keep on our table in order to work at the beautiful hall that's connected to the apartments. It was quiet in there and the music wasn't overbearing. We got a lot of work done. WiFi was also provided. The food itself was also good and very filling. The portions were big and generous. Overall, the coffee shop and the study area itself was magnificent. Highly recommended for anyone who needs some work space. read more

My Instagram feed has been funneling this place into my brain, so I finally went out to try it. Parking is limited, so I recommend getting here early or getting lucky finding a spot. Once you order your drink, there is a nice area next door to chat, drink, or work. There is free WiFi and plenty of outlets as well as tables to sit at. I was first drawn to this place because of how aesthetic their working space was, which did live up to the hype. The design and decor of the interior made me feel cozy especially with their nice selection of plants. The baristas are friendly and helped us choose our drinks. My friend and I got the golden coast and the sweet mint cold brew. The golden coast was light on the sweetness and had subtle hints of honey and sea salt. I felt that it lacked flavors and could be stronger. The mint cold brew impressed me however, as the mint stood out providing a refreshing taste in the sweet drink. Upon getting here, the area was nice. I've been to the other communal coffee location and this is a great new addition to the franchise. I always loved the detail they put into the shops. I came on a Sunday morning with my fiancé. It was a pretty busy morning but the drinks and food came out pretty quick. The shop itself I would say is actually a walk up type of shop connected to the Kaya apartments. They have a pass once you purchase drinks/food to be able to stay in the lobby next to the shop. This lobby is the apartment as well so there are some seats mostly reserved for residents but the area was spacious with plenty of seating to do work/study or have a chat. There is outdoor seating as well and it is next to a park as well so it is very family and pet friendly. The coffee is great and the food was delicious. Gold Coast is one of my favorite espresso based drinks I've had in San Diego. It's espresso with honey and sea salt and topped with oat milk! Perfectly sweet and salty I've also had their ceremonial matcha and brown sugar latte, both delicious Communal shares seating with the apartment complex next door named Kaya. The newest branch of Communal Coffee is on the ground level of the Kaya Apartments in Bankers Hill. It's practically at a cul de sac with the suite facing north overlooking Olive Street Park in the distance. There was free parking on the opposite side of Third Ave where I was able to snag an open spot. A few small round tables were arranged in front of the suite, but the inside was only set up for ordering. There was a common area to the left (east) of the business where you could hang out, but I felt like it belonged to the apartment residents. See some of the other reviews for the details on the conditions to use this space. Three menu boards hung above the service counter. The left one featured coffee, espresso, and lattes. The middle one listed the matcha and non-coffee drinks. The right one contained the food offerings and was considered a seasonal menu. I picked a Lemonade from the middle board and the last item on the food menu which was a Harvest Bowl. The drink was available as plain, with lavender, or sparkling. I stuck with plain, but in hindsight I should have chosen lavender because my version was bland and not very tart either. The contents of the bowl were potatoes, sausage, broccolini, soft egg, sriracha mayo, and chives. The best parts were the broccolini and soft egg which was placed on top. For the $16 price tag, the serving size was small, and that was being generous. Communal is a convenient stop for those who live in or near these high-rise apartments. Based on the quality and cost of my order, I gave a three star rating. read more

I had a very nice cortado from this new Communal Coffee located in Banker's Hill. The cortado was smooth and rich and offered a very good coffee flavor. Customer service was friendly and welcoming. There's inside seating at this location, but I think there's a minimum purchase to sit inside the apartment lobby. There's an outside patio with several tables right outside and there's a small community park right next door. The inside seating that you see in pics isn't technically for the coffee place (I think it's for the apartment complex) and the front desk told us we needed permission from the coffee shop to sit in there, so we just opted for outdoor seating to make it less complicated. My friend and I both got the golden coast coffee. Mine came out to a little over 9 dollars with tip which is very pricey. I had no idea there was a communal coffee here and honestly I never would've gone based on my experiences at the other locations (not bad just nothing special). However, my friend recommended the golden coast latte as well as the seating area- this location and the latte are great! The golden coast latte has the best salty sweet flavor, if you don't like salt - it's not for you! The first sip is always strong but gets more delicious as you get used to it. This is one of my go to spots now and I love that they open at 630am. I've seen the same rotation of baristas and they're always friendly, fast, and helpful! Also, they ALWAYS shake my drink which I appreciate considering so many places skip that step and it does make a difference The picture makes the latte seem like they don't, but trust they do, the espresso just separates fast but it's well incorporated and a lil shake quickly blends it The location! You can ask to sit inside the building it's attached too and it's a great place to study or read. Good lighting and always clean. Communal coffee has branched out into the Bankers Hill area and opened its forth shop. Parking was a bit of a challenge, only street parking. Sharing ground floor space with Kaya, a newish residential apartment building and collaborated to share the lobby for indoor space for Communal customers with conditions: you must purchase from Communal at least $7 and only stay a max 2 hours. And just like the other Communal locations, the indoor seatings were all occupied by lots of solo people on their laptop nursing one drink. It was a sunny morning and the outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade was great. A community mini park is conveniently next to this shop, for kids and pets to enjoy. From the menu, I ordered one of the signature drinks; a Golden Coast iced latte with oat milk and an avocado toast. I requested a couple dashes of cinnamon to my drink, which was prepared rather quickly by John. The golden coast iced latte tasted ok, nothing special and wasn't as strong as I prefer and was mostly ice. The avocado toast looked ok, nothing fancy but the taste of rosemary herb was overpowering and a turn off. The description of this item on the menu does not mention rosemary herb at all. Sadly, rosemary herb is NOT a flavor I want in my avo toast, which appeared to have been added to the butter, which was spread on the toast. :( I ate the avocado, sans toasts :( and not worth it. The menu should offer more information as to the contents in food. I'm glad Communal coffee shop opened in this side of Bankers Hill as most of the coffee shops and restaurants are on Fifth Street and don't offer nice seating next to a mini park. It's a small spot connected to an apartment building, and if you order a coffee you can hang out in their lobby. Not quite what I expected from online pics, but it worked out fine. I had my baby with me, so we got a couple of looks, but I get it -- a lot of people are there to chill or get work done. I appreciate it how this was on the corner spot and it's also located right next to a park/jungle gym (great for kids). This might be the smallest Communal location I've visited. They catered their indoor space to collaborate with some other space that requires you to purchase something in order to utilize a seat for 2 hours. This is pretty ideal if you might want to be productive and cap your time, but could be a hassle if you wanted to stay more than that. It is connected to a small park as well but altogether is a small open space. I enjoyed my usual latte order as I do at other Communal cafes which is their Honey Lavender Latte, iced. It is the same consistency within the latte and they have a decent selection on the menu including kitchen items. I tried their Lox Salmon bagel, and it was pretty tasty, too. Overall, a new cafe in the neighborhood that is a safe choice, as Communal is a popular cafe in SD. Nothing new or exciting though in terms of the menu really caught my attention. read more

Originally when I arrived there was a massive line that wrapped around the corner into a dark corridor. I didn't want to stand in the line and have them not accept cash so I waited until it was only a few people in line. Well, at first, I thought I was okay since I didn't see a sign about it. But as I ordered and went to pay, the barista kindly informed that they only took card/ebt (I think? I'm not sure what that is). I said ok, never mind then. Then they were talking amongst the other workers and in the end said it was okay and it would be covered by them. Which was SO unbelievably kind! I cannot express my gratitude enough, I wanted to give everyone a hug lol. However, they do accept tips (cash). On my hike, I was thinking that I could have paid for my coffee in full in the tip jar, but it didn't cross my mind at the time. There's always next time to drop something extra for sure! (I hope it is okay to share this experience...some acts of kindness is best kept secret). So, just a reminder, they do not accept cash payments! Anyways, a friend recommended that I get this drink after we went to Communal Coffee in South Park once. I got the Iced Salted Caramel Latte with Whole Milk...I believe it was 16oz, ~$7! It was sublime! So rich and had the perfect amount of salt in it. The caramel was super lush and didn't overtake the espresso. It was the perfect balance in flavor. I highly recommend this latte. My friend had the Maple Gingerbread Latte and he recommends it as well! That one also caught my eye. The coffee shop kind of confused me as it's separate from the seating area. On Instagram, it didn't give off this vibe for their new space. So being there in person, I was confused as to where to go and if I was allowed to head into the space beside them. I think, it's a shared space but there was this lady seated in front of the doors that made it feel like a hotel or some sort of private seating area. Thankfully, there were lots of outdoor space and a park to sit at as well. I thought the park next to it was super lovely. They have some merch on their side walls and call out your name when the drink is ready. There's not much room to stand inside after ordering so you'll have to stand outside and open your ears to hear them call your name. Parking can be tough as most of the surrounding street parking is used by nearby apartment residents. I suggest giving yourself a few extra minutes to circle around. The setup here is a bit different: there's no traditional indoor café area -- just a small outdoor ordering window, plus patio seating. If you're planning a meet-up with other parents or casual hang with friends, it's actually a perfect spot (especially with kids in tow). But if you're like me and came to get some work done, the situation gets a bit more nuanced... The "Workspace" Situation Right next to the ordering window is a lobby-style space that looks like a co-working lounge -- part of the adjacent new apartment complex. It's sleek and modern, and about 80% of the people there were working or studying. I wasn't told until later that there's a $7 minimum order required to use the space, but luckily I had ordered a breakfast burrito, so it wasn't an issue. Just a heads up if you're thinking of grabbing just a coffee and settling in -- ask about the policy before ordering. I asked the barista if I could use the space, and he just said "Yes, after you place your order." After paying, I walked over next door and waited a few minutes for someone to check me in. You can also buy their signature coffee beans, cool merch with the Bankers Hill logo, and other fun stuff. The café is open from 6:30 AM to 5 PM every day, and until 6 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. which seems fair for such a nice space. My barista wasn't rude, she just seemed very introverted and wasn't warm or welcoming. THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: it's a tiny little cafe with 4-5 outdoor tables that are open seating. The adjoining apartment building (named Kaya) has a lobby that customers can work in for two hours with a minimum purchase -- but there's often a waitlist. Today (Wednesday) at 1130am the lobby was at capacity and there was a 7 person waitlist. So being able to get a spot, and actually get anything done is hit or miss. Overall, this wasn't worth the trip from home for me. If I were in the neighborhood, I might grab a coffee and go -- but overall, underwhelming. This new Communal location is a fun little spot! I've been to each of their other locations and I love how each one, including this one, matches the neighborhood and community they are in. This location is great for parents with kids as it is right next to a park - great for play dates! It's also a part of a brand new apartment complex and is a great space to pick up a coffee or tea if you work in one of the local businesses. The food is just as good here at their other locations. I ordered the peach ricotta toast on sourdough and throughly enjoyed it! The espresso tonic is my go to for a refreshing drink on a hot summer day. The staff was very kind and welcoming, especially since this is the newest communal location and they are still figuring out the best way to function. They took and made my order quickly - I didn't feel like I was waiting forever. There is a time limit to the indoor seating because it's a shared lobby space with the apartment complex and the staff made sure I understood this policy. While I stayed at an outdoor table to enjoy my food and coffee, I would find it easy to move from inside to another location if I needed to stay longer. This review is about the space itself, not the coffee. Communal shares a large indoor seating area with the Kaya apartments. This arrangement is confusing, we were there on a weekday early afternoon enjoying coffee inside and a woman approached us to ask if we were residents, and that residents have priority for the space and asked us to leave because there was a "wait list". About 25% of the seating was open, and on the way out we didn't see a single person standing inside, outside, or in line for coffee. I think they just want you to grab your drink and get out. read more
