This was the first time I've ever used a moving company (living away from family means no more free help) and I was hesitant to say the least. I had been in contact with several companies and was having a hard time accepting what it was going to cost me. Amanda, the Office Manager, was extremely helpful and prompt with all of our exchanges (both via phone and email). She did not try to get me to add unnecessary expenses and broke everything down for me. Very professional and friendly. Rory and Amos are nothing short of god sends. I was very nervous about having strangers move my belongings and a crying mess that morning, to be honest. They communicated with me about how they were doing, reassured me whenever I started questioning what entrance/route/etc. and were very efficient! The job was estimated to take 4-5 hours, but they got it done in 3 on the dot. We moved a 2 bedroom townhome into a 1 bedroom apartment on the other side of Oakland, both with different parking and difficult entrances/stairwells. It was worth every penny. We purchased a new home but had to put our stuff in storage until our new place was ready. We decided to hire professional movers to move our stuff and I could not be happier with Commander moving. To save money, my wife and I packed up all our own stuff. Having moved many times myself I made sure I was organized, and well prepared for the team when they showed up. They worked their asses off and loaded my entire 3 bedroom house in about 3 hours. I couldn't believe it. I expected that since they were hourly that they would milk it. NOT the case, these guys humped our stuff into those trucks quickly and efficiently. My house took two trucks and I was worried that it wouldn't all fit in my 10x30 storage space, and I voiced my concerns a few time to Greg the lead and he assured me that they would be able to fit it all in. When we got to the storage space they continued their hard working fast pace and quickly loaded all of my stuff into the space with no problem. It was PACKED from floor to ceiling but they did it and did it quick. My entire job took only 6 hours. I could NEVER have done that with my friends and renting a UHaul. This will be my go to moving company from now on, hands down. Communication with CM was fantastic. They picked up immediately and had quick responses to emails. I spoke with the commander himself Karel, and he was fantastic in confirming details. He quoted me a 3 hr minimum (time allotted for driving between locations is counted as double, standard for all moving companies). My move was from Fremont to Emeryville, and in emeryville picking up a bed from apt A and moving everything to apt B in the same compex. The morning of the move, Greg and Johnny arrived, and called me in advance to let me know that they would arrive 15 minutes later than the scheduled time. (I really appreciated the notice). They were quick to load the truck and arrived to Emeryville 10 minutes after I arrived; I was pleasantly surprised, since I've had other moving companies purposely drive slower to take up more time. Greg and Johnny were extremely efficient, friendly, and careful in handing my furniture. They finished unloading everything and even helped me assemble my bedframe. And let me tell you, that thing is a bitch to put back together since It's not the easy ikea stuff. haha That saved me at least 2 hours from me assembling myself it after they left. And they didn't charge me anything more than the 3 hours that was quoted. All in all, they finished drove from fremont to emeryville (45 min drive), had three stops total in the move, loaded/unloaded, and assembled my bedframe in about 2.5 hours (by the clock). We used Commander for a move from a storage unit to our new house. Having dealt with moving companies recently, I expected them to show up late (or at the late end of the promised window) and be slow. I was shocked when they called 30 minutes prior to the start of the time window and said they were nearby and ready to go. Ricky and Jeremy worked quickly but carefully and had our stuff packed up, driven to the house, and unloaded in 4 hours. We were done by noon! They ran to and from the truck between loads. Excellent service all the way around. Had a one bedroom move from Oakland to Albany scheduled for about noon. Rory called at 12:00 to say they were 10 mins out. He and Jesse met my boyfriend at our (now former) house, packed the truck in 30 mins. Made it out to me in Albany, had it all unloaded and unwrapped in 30 mins. Were very professional and courteous. I was mostly outside watching the truck and street scene, but after they left I noticed they had taken care not to lean anything against the walls, very thoughtful. I've learned that moving isn't so bad when you hire movers to do it. Karel and his team are just wonderful. They helped me move under extremely short notice (2 days), and in the evening! I did a lot of price comparison shopping and found that Commander Moving had very competitive rates, the best availability, and was the most responsive to phone calls and emails. I think this makes them the best value there is. Even though hiring professional movers is more expensive than hiring day laborers, I feel that the cost of the services was well worth it. I've hired day laborers in the past and found that they are not as efficient, usually break stuff, and are not licensed or insured should something go wrong. When you factor in the additional cost of renting your own moving truck, dollies, furniture pads, shrink wrap, etc., it doesn't come out to be much cheaper, and requires much more organization. On moving day, Commander Moving arrived early and handled my belongings with care. They also wrapped up a bunch of my stuff in shrink wrap for free which was a super nice gesture! The team worked really hard and even finished the job in about 15 minutes less time than they estimated. They were super professional, trustworthy, and had a great attitude. Overall, they totally went above and beyond my expectations. I am moving my bf's stuff into our place next week and I made him hire Commander Moving for it. They made my move SO easy! I emailed them a couple weeks beforehand to make a reservation, and the manager emailed me back within about 15 minutes with an estimate. Every single time I emailed him, he was always prompt, friendly, and professional with his response. The movers themselves (Doug and Bruce) were about 20 minutes early to start loading (which was fantastic!) and they got everything loaded and unloaded quickly and with no damage. They brought LOTS of moving gear with them: dollies, tons of furniture pads, shrinkwrap, and even extra boxes. The good part about all this gear is that it doesn't cost you anything extra to use. They really mean what they say: the estimate you get when you email them is what you pay on moving day, down to the cent. I would definitely highly recommend them. The most efficient, painless, pleasant (!! who thought moving could be pleasant?!) moving experience I've ever had! I had packed all my own things and loaded them into two moving containers which were then shipped across country, from Boston to the Bay Area. (I used Door to Door which was great!). I knew once I got to the Bay Area, I wouldn't want to move my own boxes, so I found Commander Moving on yelp with great reviews. I bought the yelp coupon which helped. I contacted Julian and he responded right away. We got a date and time set up, and he was always prompt to respond, whether by phone or email. On the day of, I met the movers at my moving container storage facility, and they were prompt and courteous. Gary, PJ, and Malin were so kind, polite, and efficient. They got all my stuff loaded from moving container to truck in about 40 minutes. Wow! Then we met back at my apartment in Berkeley. They brought all my stuff up to my apartment, one flight up, in about an hour. They offered to help me assemble things, and they moved furniture into appropriate rooms. I love these guys! :) They are super amazing! Super accommodating, friendly, and on top of EVERYTHING! Having never hired a moving company before -- the old college method of enlisting one's friends to help move has always been the route for me, save money and all -- I finally decided enough was enough for moving, and looked around online for help/movers/storage for an unknown-period storage solution! Tada, Yelp suggested Commander Moving (along with a few others); but after reading even some of the reviews on here for them, I contacted them, and Karel immediately responded. He was incredibly nice. Worked with me for different times for moving. Even when I had to change the time, the day before, he was super okay with it. Told me not to worry about it, and even confirmed two days (then one day) in advance. They showed up at 8am SHARP (super awesome and on time!), and started moving everything. I already had everything packed into numbered boxes, and had tried to shrink the workload down for them as much as possible. They had everything out in SUPER FAST TIME! (this is 40 some boxes of varying sizes plus a bunch of furniture!) If that wasn't enough, they wrapped everything before loading (furniture wise) in copious amounts of bubble-wrap and tape to ensure that things wouldn't get damaged or jammed. They also were very efficient in transporting all the boxes and items...making sure the stuff that required more attention was paid attention to, etc. They were super funny and had really great jokes. C'mon, that's a very nice plus too! Were super patient and friendly having to deal with the neighbors too! Everything was out in record time (about an hour!) and they were off with my stuff to their storage. My stuff is still in storage; however, for $60 a month for almost a 2 bed-apt full of stuff for 1 box is AMAZING!!!! :D They are super amazing! Deft. recommend. These guys are miracle workers! They were referred to us by another company that didn't go out as far as Vallejo. I called them with short notice, and in 2 days they were at our place helping us move. Caleb and Shamar arrived on time and went straight to it. They wrapped everything carefully and moved everything meticulously. They disassembled our clunky bed and our awkward corner desk, and assembled both at the new place with no problem. They were courteous, friendly, fast and efficient. Within 4 hours, they moved everything out of our 1 bedroom apartment, and had it set in our 2 bedroom home, ready to go. I can't say enough good things about Karel and his guys! I was moving an office and needed movers with just two days notice. Karel was ready to go and was very flexible in terms of my needs. His guys moved everything out of our old office and moved half of the items to a new space in the same city and the other half of the items to our space on the other side of the bay. There was a little mix up with our drop off the next day, but Karel and his guys were very good about communicating and fixed the problem very quickly. I'm VERY glad I didn't work with Commander a second time. Threats and extortion are no way to do business. My reasoning was fully explained in my review, and the move was the exact same, as I detailed. (And for the record, Labor Cesar is insured.) However, your review by being two years ( 4/30 you bought a Yelp deal) after the move is not accurate and doesn't really reflect our company today. Why would you write this ? It doesn't help to anything and not sure why is this making you feel good. You are also comparing apples and oranges by comparing us to UNLICENSED AND UNINSURED moving company with no trucks. They don't pay for workers comp nor insurance or truck maintenance of course they are cheaper. We will report Labor Cesar to PUC, if the review will stay there. Our guys have to stop for lunch, because it is the law. This review is not fair and I will give you one more chance, please, think about it. I find you promoting UNLICENSED business very offensive and wrong. I will wait to write a public comment yet. The move it self was not the same. Did you move back to your old place ? The company has several strengths : Equipment : Modern trucks and extensive dollies and pads, to protect your items. Reliability : They wrote down the correct details and confirmed all contract arrangements. Staff : We had the two " Mikes" serve us. Both were fearless, dedicated, courteous and lifted like elephants. They did their work without slacking, taking only a brief break from their tasks. Value : The final invoice was in accord with their quote and at, or less than, their competition. read more

Commander packed some of my goods in March/April so my real estate agent could stage my house for sale. We sold in May and Commander came in to pack everything else. My original goods were in storage with them, and since I didn't have a final destination it made sense to have everything in one place. Had I known they couldn't move outside of CA I would never have chosen them. But the destination is somewhat irrelevant in this situation. Commander recommended a company called Shamrock, where several of them used to work, for my final move. When my goods arrived there were many improperly packed goods. Lampshades were nested in boxes with blankets and a firm plastic cutting mat. Other shades were stacked too tightly and are permanently creased. The most egregious error was to bind two encaustic works of fine art face-to-face with nothing protecting the finished sides. Then they were tightly bound together, wrapped in brown paper and then wrapped in stretch wrap as tightly as it could possibly be stretched. The result, when in unwrapped them was the them to audibly "pop" when the plastic was cut. All four corners of the two paintings are damaged. There are gouges of wax affixed to its opposite painting at the corners and along the sides. This type of damage occurs during a move. This is the 8th time I've used "professional" movers. I understand that you don't always get things back they way they were on packing day. But I do expect some prompt attention, a reasonable amount of ownership and a satisfactory resolution. I called Commander on moving day and never got a response. I called again in about a week. This time I got a voicemail back telling me I needed to be patient because whoever had authority to address the situation was on vacation. I think I waited almost two weeks more before I contacted them again. This time I got some attention...finger pointing. Since my goods had been transferred to Shamrock Commander's responsibility ended when my shipment was picked up. I understand that goods like lampshades, glass vessels and plates (all broken) could occur in the way Shamrock handled the packed boxes. That has not been my focus with Commander. The items that I know for a fact was packed incorrectly are the two paintings. And yet I still get quotes from them in my correspondence like "assuming it was us that was negligible". You are. Own up to it. At this point I realize I won't get any satisfaction from Commander Moving. This is posted as a warning to anyone else considering them. I would not consider them for any potential out-of-state work. In general I would question their packing quality and they should be watched closely. Beyond the above-stated damage there were several furniture scuffs, new wear marks and significant cracks to the molding and door of a 6' wardrobe. Buyer beware. read more

This was my first time hiring professional movers (hello, 30-year-old grownup!) and I have to say I will never move myself again. Commander Moving made it so easy! They were extremely responsive during initial research. They even come to your house to do a time estimate based on all of your belongings. When moving day finally arrived, I was super impressed by the two-guy crew. They were fast yet took their time to wrap furniture. Within an hour and half they had our entire place amazingly packed on the moving truck. God knows I couldn't have done that. I would still be packing if it were me. We booked our move and then had to reschedule once because there was an issue with our move destination not being ready on the date we originally booked, but the whole booking process AND rescheduling was super easy. Their office responds to inquiries very fast so if you are looking for a ballpark quote or want to schedule any moves, you will be sure to hear back from them right away. They also offer to send an employee out to give you a detailed estimate for free, which is nice. We moved from a 2 bedroom, 3 story townhouse WITH stairs between each floor to a 2 bedroom condo that was located on the 3rd floor also WITH stairs. (No elevator at either of these residences) and they promptly moved all of our furniture and boxes efficiently. They even provided wardrobe boxes and packed our clothes for us...I assumed I would have to pack the wardrobe boxes with myself. That was a big help. The moving crew that came out to do the move were all friendly, polite and very professional. They definitely were pros who knew how to get things fast and efficiently. The only complaint we have is that 2 of our picture frames were broken during the new move process, one of which held a poster that the broken glass had scratched up during transport. We didn't see this until after a day or two of unpacking. Both framed items were gifts so we can't really tell what dollar amount could be given, but aside from those, everything else arrived in tact. Moving is a stressful process, so it definitely helps to pick a moving company that knows what they are doing to make that process a little bit easier. I just used Commander Moving to move a one-bed apartment's worth of stuff from Oakland to Emeryville, and it's easily my best experience with any moving company so far. Nick and Rory arrived promptly at 8am and made quick work of loading the boxes that I'd already packed and my furniture onto the truck. I'm REALLY impressed at how they maneuvered my bed through a tight hallway and difficult doorways without having to disassemble it (it's IKEA furniture, so there're only so many times you can dis/re-assemble it before it falls apart...). On the other side, they unpacked and moved stuff into the new place just as efficiently. Throughout the whole process, they were both super professional and friendly. With just a two person team, they got the job done faster than the three-person teams I've used in the past! And this is my first move where nothing got damaged or broken - everything's in great shape at the new place. Caleb is the mastermind. He's sharp, he's quick, organized and nice as hell. All of them. It was a big job; bigger than they anticipated but still came in under budget. There was a snafu at the storage space and we couldn't get in right away, so they took themselves off the clock so we wouldn't pay for sitting around ( which they did not have to do!) I love these guys. I have a new favorite moving company... who knew there was so much to rave about! Just used Commander for the third time on Friday. They have been amazing every time! Rory and Amos arrived 10 minutes early and handled everything super professionally. It was amazing to see them carry our heavy stuff up a flight of stairs and they never complained. We will continue to use Commander in the future for sure. One piece of wisdom--if the office suggests a third mover be added, go for it! It will probably save you money overall to pay for the additional person because things will go much faster. read more

I had a great experience with Commander movers. Rocky, Jayson and Vince were rockstars hauling all my stuff up to a 3-story walk up on a hot day. Very respectful of belongings, nothing was damaged.
