This is an update to my earlier review. We have been coming here weekly now for over a year and I'm consistently blown away by the food. I am going to go out on a limb and declare this the best family Mexican restaurant in all of Phoenix. There, I said it. People may wonder why I would say such a definitive thing for something subjective like food. It's because almost everything here is mind blowing really good. I don't think there are better beans anywhere. Their rice is always tender and flavorful and not the rock hard rice cooker. Crap you get in almost every other Mexican restaurant. Standouts for me here include the Carnitas, which are amazing. The chunky beef enchiladas are the best. I've had anywhere in the United States. The shredded beef tacos are super tasty and greasy and hot and full of meat and just excellent. The fish is particularly good., especially the "mojarra" or whole fried fish. It's tender and flavorful and fresh. There's nothing on the menu that I would say is even mediocre. The chicken enchiladas are excellent, and the burritos are all to die for. The only thing that didn't impress me was the fajitas, but I would still give those a four out of five. The service here is amazing even on a crazy Saturday. I don't recommend coming here if you're starving because there's going to be a wait. Come for lunch and come after 2 o'clock and there won't be any wait. People come here from all over Phoenix and it has been here for almost 60 years. There's a reason why and it's because, as I said, this is the best family Mexican restaurant in all of the Phoenix Valley, and possibly in the state of Arizona. Consistent and fantastic. Love their green chili con papas. Love the lunch soup. Love eating here for lunch. Takeout is great also.

Happened to stumble across this place and have to say I am completely blown away. Everything was so good. Love the green sauce enchiladas and that beef and potato taco was so good. Comedor Guadalajara is one of those spots you can always count on for great flavor. I had the shredded taco combo plate, and the hard tacos were excellent; crispy, fresh, and packed with taste.The rice and beans made it feel like a comforting, well-rounded meal. I will say service can run a little slow when it comes to drink refills, and portions feel a bit smaller compared to the past. But honestly, the food is so delicious it's still worth the visit. This is an amazing and authentic Mexican restaurant. Don't let the dated building fool you! On the inside, you'll feel like you're attending a family event and the staff makes you feel like family too! I only had the Green Chile Beef burrito, enchilada style, smothered in green sauce. My wife asked me to bring her home the same thing, a relleno and a taco. Even though I had an hour drive home, she loved it all and said the taco was AMAZING! So the food was good, but the nopales tasted like they came from a jar because there was a high taste of vinegar to them. So they weren't fresh, which is sad because Nopales are always in season, so there's no reason you shouldn't / couldn't make them fresh. read more

Not gonna lie, the location is not the best. The entrance is kinda hidden, but my goodness! This legit authentic Mexican food!! You know somewhere is amazing when there's no advertisement, but yet the place is packed all the time? This is it!! I wish I showed up when there's live music. I'm so glad my friend recommended this restaurant for. I got a free soup as soon as I am seated, then later free chips and salsa - I'm spoiled! The server is lovely. However, I wish he would elaborate the special of the day further. All he did was said a Spanish term and didn't tell me exactly what it was. I ended up ordering the shredded beef taco and cheese enchiladas from the lunch menu. I was going to save some leftover, but 5 minutes in, never mind lol~ 100% will return. read more

The Mexican food joint that just about everyone has heard about. A Phoenix staple, Comedor has been around for nearly 5 decades. My dad, who was long time friends with the owner, would often bring us here in years past. I'm extremely picky about my Mexican food and this place has always been on of my top 3. A must try for out of towners. I ordered my usual, Molcajete de Camaron con Nopales. It was as delicious and savory as I could remember, as it's been about 2 years since I stepped foot into the restaurant. I really appreciate the consistency and authenticity. Served in an oven hot molcajete, the dish is served piping hot in a rich red chile sauce & also comes with a side of rice, beans & tortillas. Of course I had to pair a Michelada with my meal, and it too was refreshing & delicious just like the years past! Complimentary chips and salsa are also both incredibly good & spicy! Some may not like the consistency as it has no texture, but packed in flavor. My husband had the tripas y asada fajitas and holy smokes!!! Sooooo good! The tripas were perfectly crunchy just how we like as most place serve them overly chewy. The asada was tender and flavorful as well. Everything about all our meals surpassed our expectations as always. The restaurant is HUGE! There are 3 main dining areas with lots of tables to help cut down on wait times as there is ALWAYS a wait, so be prepared! I wish they accepted reservations. Hours are very odd and they close quite early every day, so be sure to check before you go. What a great restaurant. First let me confirm what others have said. Yes they charge for another basket of chips. Yes their salsa is HOT. Those really didn't detract from the overall great service and food. We went because of an article about great mole in Phoenix. All of us agreed this may be one of the best mole dishes we have had! The chicken chunks were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The chili relleno was fabulous. The green chili chicken enchiladas were great as were the shredded beef tacos. As much as I enjoy food here and how authentic it is their operating hours are stupid ridiculous. The idea they still run with COVID 19 hours and get away with it is laughable. I can only imagine the business they lose month to month due to their hours. Friday and Saturday you have to be there before 7pm for dinner! Today I visited this restaurant and was helped by a wonderful woman named Ashley. She's one of the hostess that seats all of the customers. I have never ever had a problem with Ashley. She is polite, kind and always has a smile on her face. She is one of the main reasons I go back because her friendly service. But today, I witnessed Ashley's boss, Terri, who's the owner of the restaurant, be so childish, unprofessional and just straight up disrespectful. As a customer seeing that, made me realize just what kind of person the business owner is. Ashley did not deserve that kind of treatment and I hope her terrible boss, finds it within the deep depths of her terrible character to give Ashley an apology for her childish and condescending comments. This isnt the first time I've seen this happen. But as of now, today was my last time going all because of a terrible owner who try to belittle her employees. read more

Outdoors: There is plenty of parking, even though we decided to try them out on a Sunday. In observation they have a person watching the parking lot, could have been valet or someone. I didn't ask Hostess: there was a young lady and gentleman who were handling all the people coming in for dine in, the wait was 30-45 minutes at around 11:35 am. We got seated after 24 minutes, so I do appreciate the faster response. Server: he was a young guy who was so kind, professional, knowledgeable and had great suggestions. He offered his advice and opinions which I greatly appreciated. He stayed on top of service, I do want to mention that on the menu they do post: First bowl of chips & salsa are on the house but anything there after there's a charge for it. Drinks: yummy their agua fresca de jamaica is so good. Please order this if you enjoy cold refreshing refreshments. Food: Amazing!!! Full of flavor, my god it's so authentic to the Guadalajara culture that it's like I'm eating at my mom's kitchen. We ordered as follows one chicken enchilada plate with mole, chicken chimichanga accompanied by rice and beans & lastly 2 hard beef tacos those two also accompanied rice and beans. Her here early for an amazing breakfast experience! The line starts at least half hours before doors open but once you are on the list you will be well taken care of. We were seated by 10 after and were promptly provided drinks, chips and salsa. The menu offers too many good choices but breakfast will never disappoint. I opted for the shrimp enchiladas and wow! I would give them five stars for their Steak Picado, and their Chiliquilles, but today I tried the fish tacos and they weren't very impressive. Then we had a piña colada for $12 and you could barely detect any alcohol in it... Don't waste your money on any mixed drinks. This is not the place for it. Service is good, as it always is. First time at Comedor Guadalajara. We arrived at 3 PM on a Thursday. Surprisingly, there were a couple dozen other parties seated at the massive restaurant. We were greeted up front by the very pleasant hostess. She walked us to our table, left our menus and said farewell. The restaurant had great ambiance with the Hispanic decor and music, tile-like floors and overall relaxed vibe. Chips and spicy salsa were brought to our table quickly. The salsa was so good, we ordered another bowl of chips, only because we still had salsa left. Our server, Israel, took our orders. My wife got the Number five (two shredded beef tacos) and a margarita, whilst I got the Number ten (chicken enchilada and a chile relleno) and an iced tea. It came to $50.17 plus tip. Very comparable to the other popular Mexican restaurant in lower South Mountain. Our meals arrived, on screaming hot plates, in about 10 mins. There was plenty of food on both plates. The tacos were pretty large, with good beef flavors going on. My relleno was good but the chicken enchilada was really good. I've usually talked about ordering that combo at other places but never have, so I'm glad I did today. It was well balanced, just the right amount of heat and savory, juicy chicken. The wait time here can be lengthy, but well worth it. When you come to eat here, you can almost always expect a wait time, and they don't take reservations, but those who frequent the restaurant already know this. And, the wait is well worth it...believe me. The food is beyond tasty, large portions, super authentic like mom's home cooking. Everything is made fresh, and the food reflects it. What a bummer to have to write this review after coming here since I was a teen. This is the second time in the last couple months that I've come here and I hesitated to write a review the last time because I figured an off day but after today I see that it is not. Idk if they have a new cook, new cook staff or what but the food has definitely went downhill. I ordered Machaca and chilaquiles and I left my plate. The Machaca idk had like a fish taste or something off... the beans taste canned now..not sure if they are or not. The wait time to be seated, to receive your food is pretty long. My fiancé ordered the chille relleno and hard tacos. They tasted like they were fried in the same oil as the sea food. The hard tacos were extremely hard and the meat was tasteless and hard. We were quoted 40 minutes and waited about an hour to be seated. When we finally got seated it seemed to not be at capacity and made me wonder why more people weren't getting seated. I asked for water and a soda but never got water. Thankfully their soda portions are enormous. The food was pretty good and service was alright. Ambience is casual and relatively weathered. I recommend skipping the flour tortilla and going with corn. My flour tortilla was massive but it was extremely dry, burned and had no butter to make it edible. Service was good and the restaurant is clean. Food: You get chips & hot sauce, which the hot sauce was just tangy hot, so I wasn't a fan. I got the tripe tacos which were very crispy and good but I wished they had better hot sauce to go with it. They give you guacamole & salsa but those were both very bland IMO. The red chile burrito w enchilada sauce was also good and probably the best thing that we ordered. Combo taco & tostada and both were also very bland and didn't have much flavor. I asked them for a chicken burrito minus the jalapeño but they said it couldn't be taken out, which clearly means everything is prepared ahead of time. I ended up ordering carne asada tacos. I'm not sure if my palette changed due to my world travels, or this place has gone downhill the past decade, but i went with my wife the other day and it was terrible. i went a few years ago during the early pandemic for chilaquiles and i did not like it. I thought it was just me, because they make it a little different. But i went and got the chille relleno and taco and the rice was hard. like old or not cooked enough. i ordered the churros and ice cream again and the churros were super old and stiff. i noticed most of the awards on the wall where i was sitting ended about 2014. super disappointed. read more

Me & 4 girlfriends get together a few times a year to celebrate our bdays. 4 of us ordered menudo and one the machaca & egg breakfast! Everything was DELISH!! Sad lunch, not the same vibe and energy as before. We had relatives and friends from California try this place. The quality and attitude has gone down the hill, it was embarrassing. I felt as if we were the bon bons on I Love Lucy and we were on a factory line. It was a long wait, which we expected. I did explain this to them, we were glad to wait an hour but not for this quality of food. We were all disappointed with the blah and tasteless food. I really don't know why people all flock to what used to be a nice, roomy and Latino owned business. It disheartening, the servers were sweethearts. It was weird that the owner kept looking at the table and counting heads at the end of our hour. I know it's a business but it is really a business owner taking advantage of people's loyalty to their restaurant. Here is a picture of my nopales and shrimp molcajete before I tasted it. It was boiling hot so shrimp were overcooked, the fried onion looked old and the the few nopales that they added were too little for the amount of soupy tasteless salsa. Can you believe salsa not having a great picante flavor but with a shrimp aftertaste. This was just subpar, please do better and go back to how it used to be. read more
