If it weren't for what you're about to read, I would give this place four or five stars, but food safety has to come first. There was a quarter-inch rock in my burrito. We're talking tooth breakage. We're talking dental work the cost of a hundred burritos if I had bit down harder. How hard is it to sort stones out of your pinto beans? It is profoundly disappointing that I cannot trust this restaurant to provide food that doesn't contain foreign objects. If you're reading this and thinking "It's just the one time and they're hard-working folks, cut them some slack!" then know that this is not the first foreign object I have found in my burrito from Comal. The Next Door Salad is amazing. I really can't imagine how this salad could be better. I've had it three times and each time the lettuce has been top quality, the pepitas, cheese, all the ingredients are fresh and perfectly portioned. I don't know what's in that green salad dressing. It's amazing and there's plenty of it in its own container. All this costs only $10. The salad is even better if you get a side of meat added. Other reviewers have note the quality of the meat at Comal. This is a great way to get a pretty substantial portion without the heaviness of a burrito or the teenytinyness of a taco. The pineapple orange ginger is very refreshing...very pineppley and not too gingery. The chips with guacamole and salsa are also good. I love the green salsa. The guacamole is only a one person size guacamole so if you are one person, it's great. read more

A handful of people I know have been ordering from here lately and I finally got around to trying it last night. Let me just say, the food here is so fresh. The salad, the guacamole and the veggie burrito were all delicious and flavorful. I just want to make a note to read all the ingredients BEFORE placing your order. I just glanced and didn't read too much but there were chiles in my burrito. I'm super sensitive to spicy food but I'm finishing my left overs right now with lots of guacamole and sour cream to balance out the chiles. Other than that, I enjoyed every bite. This place is very hit or miss-- which is a shame, because when they make the dishes right, they're so delicious! I've been burned twice now and won't be ordering from them again in the future. Buttermilk Fried Chicken Torta-- Instead of whole chicken breasts/thighs, they chop the meat up into slivers. On one of my orders, there was barely any meat, it was literally a measly scattering of chopped up chicken skin and connective tissue. It clearly didn't taste right-- didn't have the expected texture, flavor profile and ratio of ingredients and so I opened up the sandwich and was shocked at what I saw. Yuck. It was enough for me to call up the restaurant to complain. The guy who answered was apologetic and said next time I could put in the Door Dash order and then call the restaurant ahead of time and let them know I had a previous bad experience and they would make it right. I never ordered that dish again. Veggie Burrito-- Tonight, I bit into the burrito and was greeted by rice, beans, and cheese. Ok...where are the promised zucchini, chiles, potatoes, cilantro, and onions?...I got through half of the burrito and saw a few kernels of corn...but this was seriously disappointing. I don't know if it's because it was the end of the night and the kitchen ran out of ingredients and so they just slapped whatever they had left into the tortilla and called it a veggie burrito. Chips and guac and chipotle salsa-- the chips have a satisfying heft and crunch to them, but are admittedly on the oily side and will leave a coating on your tongue. Guac is good, a little one-note (garlicky). Chipotle salsa packs smoky heat. Anyway, you can take your chances ordering from this place. If they get the dish right, you'll be rewarded deliciousness. When I tried to place the order online there was no option for that so I tried to call to pickup. I said: "hi I'd like to place an order for pickup." "Ok." This restaurant is amazing, from the service to the food, to the cleanliness of the whole establishment. We ordered the Chilaquiles with green sauce and eggs, the nachos with no meat and the chicken torta. The food was amazing. This place has broken Chilaquiles for me. The presentation and flavors are perfect. Their nachos are exactly what you would hope they would be, and the torta is amazing. The portions are very generous, you won't leave hungry but if you do have room, the chocolate chip cookies are delicious. The manager, Alex, and his staff were very nice and helpful. Food is too expensive and low quality. I ate here once and would not come back. The Mexican food in the Bay Area is amazing and the tacos are cheap. For $5 per taco, it needs to be well prepared and it just left something to be desired. Bland, not very warm, too mushy. I ate out of hunger, but not pleasure. Nearby Doña, another local restaurant, does a similar style of food/price point and is way better. And any local taco truck will make a tastier taco for a fraction of the price as well. They literally just opened in Oakland 2 days ago!! So thrilled that they've got a location in the Adams Point neighborhood!! Ordered their Carnitas Burrito, Chips, Salsa & Guacamole; carnitas are so flavorful and the burrito was a large portion- super heavy when I picked up the bag. Their chipotle salsa has a perfectly smoky flavor and went really well with the simple fresh guacamole. Several times, I've ordered burritos that have been wildly inconsistent -- ingredients missing or all weirdly distributed (like half, lengthwise, with all beans, the other side with all meat?). Great ingredients but their proportions are all off. Last time I ordered a bean & cheese burrito but added beef. The burrito I got was 75% beef, 20% cheese and 5% beans. Overpriced, dry, TINY tacos. Microscopic amounts of onions and cilantro. Meat is very dry. 3 tacos are equal to 2 normal tacos elsewhere. The web site was having issues for pick up orders but we worked around it by selecting the Caviar option. The tacos are the thing; the chicken taco with added cheese was pure comfort food. The carnitas taco with added crema and roasted green chilies was a good second place. The barbacoa burrito was large enough to split but got to be a bit one note after awhile and could have used some spice (maybe add the chipotle salsa?). Took an afternoon walk around the lake and was looking for a quick bite. Comal Next Door looked nice and casual and the people were really friendly. This was a much better vibe than GLK which was a few doors down. Ordered the special - carne asada tacos and had the hibiscus lemonade (FYI bar opens at 5pm but they have to go cocktails). I'm really excited for Comal Next Door to have come to Oakland. We're sorely lacking in really good Mexican. I think the tacos are spot on. As well the salad is pretty great. I think the burritos could use a bit of work -- the ones we had were on the soggy side. I'm not sure what it was, perhaps the tortilla brand they use? I've had hundreds of bay area burritos in my life, most of them can somewhat stand on their own if unwrapped (not that you'd do that, of course). Comal's burritos had a hard time not falling over even with a bit of foil unwrapping -- extremely soft & unformed. Hopefully this improves over time! read more

Like the food, but the service times need to improve. You cannot ask for people to pay $12-15 for burritos and make them wait 20-30 minutes past their scheduled pickup times (an hour after ordering). *** Beware *** Food is good but this is the second time that the cashier add tip when I didn't select anything since I tip them with cash. This time I asked for my receipt and he hesitated and said he would take it to my table. 30 min my food was still not ready, and of course no receipt. After finishing our meal, I went back inside and waited for my receipt and sure enough he added tip on top of what I put in the jar. Tips are not required and while it is customary in California, employees should understand that not all customer Can afford the extra charge. read more

This place makes the best chicken burrito I have ever had but they often give me a pork burrito instead of a chicken burrito. I have ordered an uncountable number of burritos from them but I don't eat pork. This unfortunately has happened to me at least 50% of the time in the last year. I called to let them know and although not outrightly rude, they were far from concerned and a bit curt. There are many people that don't eat pork for religious or other reasons so check your burrito before you leave the restaurant or you might get a surprise. read more

But this food is good straight from a box, cold-ish from the delivery, and even sloshed around a bit from the drive over. I can't imagine better tasting Mexican food. The rice is real and it has a richness other Mexican rice doesn't have. The beans are a cut above, the corn tortillas and the elote, so flavorful. We have ordered food from Comal Next Door in the past and enjoyed it. However, tonight was a disaster. We ordered through Doordash at 5:30 and by 7:50, no food had arrived. Doordash was not available for assistance either by phone or online chat. Neither was Comal Next Door. Finally, I went over to the restaurant in person at 8:00. Their website and voicemail say that they are open until 8:30 p.m. Doors locked. Lights off. No one was there. At this point, all we know is that we have been defrauded of $47. Not a good business model. Follow up: I learned later that the street was closed down for the holiday and then there was a shooting across the street and the restaurant shut down for the night. Totally understandable. I know it might be a lot to ask under the circumstances, but if the restaurant had left a phone message saying that they had shut down because of an emergency, I wouldn't have gone over and gotten caught in the chaos myself. I went to Comal with three other people for lunch today, a Tuesday. It's set up with tables outside on the sidewalk, but there were empty tables inside and we took on. At Comal you must order from the counter and then they bring the food to your table. I ordered a horchata, which was delicious, elote corn, which consisted of one small ear, and it was tasty, although it wasn't covered with very much cheese. I also ordered a large order of guacamole and tortilla chips, expecting a bowl full of guacamole and adequate chips, for $9. Instead we received a baggy-sized bag of chips and about half a cup of guacamole in a plastic carry-out relish container. I spoke to the male reddish-haired waiter who was working, and said that they must have brought me the wrong order, a small-sized guacamole. He said no, that they brought me what I had ordered and offered additional chips. I complained about the tiny size of the guacamole they charge $9 for. The waiter screamed at me, "Do you run a restaurant!?!" and walked away in a huff after he brought another baggy of chips. Afterward he spent the rest of the time in the kitchen. I have never been treated in such a rude way in a restaurant before. I won't be back and neither will my other three companions. This restaurant offers very poor value and very rude service. read more
