It came with a giant minced crab meat ball and some very fresh snow crab claws too. I don't recognize two of the fresh greens that they included which just makes me believe they're including harder to source less common items. Their Com Tam is pretty good too. Though I believe I had their Com Tam togo before and just thought it was okay. They even give you fermented shrimp paste for the true OGs. So far this is my favorite Vietnamese Restaurant in the SGV. Here's why: 1. Pho broth is deep and aromatic. Noodles are tender and fresh. 2. The Com Tam rice plates have great tasting items. One item that I hated growing up knocked my socks off. That's the shredded pork skin. This place makes it good. Also the broken rice is just fluffy eventhough it's not whole grain. 3. Do try the pho hot pot. That sliced raw beef is actually better than wagyu to me. It's tender, well balanced meat flavor, and just not as fatty as wagyu. My dad loved all the tripe, meatball, veggies that came with that hot pot. We ordered a bowl of broken rice on the side. That broth makes it like pho porridge that you get from 7 course meals. I can eat a couple of pho both and just rice. 4. Service is very quick. 5. Some waiting due to popularity of their food, but I never mind the wait because I know the food is fresh. 6. Com Tam Kieu is one of my top picks for Vietnamese foods. They have a wide selection from rice plates, noodles/bun dishes to pho options. Their bun rieu is quite tasty and the rice plates have generous portions. I like that their steam egg comes with a salted egg yolk. The downside is that the wait can be quite long during prime lunch and dinner times. However, the good news is they'll be opening another location at the end of the same plaza. Hopefully that will cut down on the wait time. The majority of the restaurant is seated cafeteria style where you may find yourself sitting right next to another party. We arrived at Com Tam Kieu around 12:20 pm on a weekday and it was packed, with a lot of people waiting outside. Despite how busy it looked, the wait was surprisingly efficient. We put our names down for two and were seated within about 10 minutes, then received our food within five minutes of ordering. Service was super fast and efficient, and the restaurant seems very well run. There's a small parking lot in front, and we got lucky enough to grab a spot as someone was leaving. We ordered the Com Tam #40 and Banh Beo, and the biggest thing that stood out to me was the portion sizes. They are MASSIVE. These are probably some of the biggest portions I've personally seen at a Vietnamese restaurant, especially for the price. Even looking around at the soups and other dishes people were ordering, everything seemed consistently huge. We definitely ordered too much food for two people! The Com Tam was pretty good overall. I especially enjoyed the tau hu ky and cha, and the soup on the side was really tasty too. The thit nuong was good, although I've had versions I personally prefer elsewhere. It might not be the best com tam I've ever had, but I do think it's one of the best options in the area and a very solid choice if you're craving it. The Banh Beo was also good and came on a much larger plate than I'm used to, although I've had more memorable banh beo at other spots. Nothing we had was bad by any means, and I enjoyed the meal overall. I had a great experience at Com Tam Kieu and would absolutely come back. The cơm tấm was definitely worth the price, with enormous portion sizes and a side of soup included. The pho was good, but I've definitely had better. The broth was a little bland, and the noodles were the flat, wide kind, so keep that in mind if you have a preference. The summer rolls were delicious, though! I remembered coming here with my mom when I was a kid and am kind of amazed that it has survived and thrived all these years later. Since this is still one of my mom's favorite casual restaurants (says a lot since she's a tough customer), I decided to make two consecutive visits on a Friday morning right when they open at 10 a.m. They already had a good amount of people dining in, and they turnover the tables quickly. I got their Bun Rieu (no pork blood & half vermicelli) and a single egg roll my first time back and it was the biggest bowl I've ever been served. It was delicious and they do not skimp on the protein. I love how they gave me a boatload of proper Vietnamese veggies/herbs and fermented shrimp paste alongside it. Most Vietnamese restaurants nowadays serve bastardized versions of a veggie/herb plate with their soup noodles to appease a devolved palette. Second time I was here, I got their dry combination egg & tapioca soy sauce noodles with the soup on the side and an order of a single egg roll. Man, do I miss this dish especially when it is served authentically. The bowl came with shrimps, thinly sliced pork, ground pork, a fried shrimp crisp, & quail eggs. But the flavor bomb comes from bits of fried shrimp, bacon fat, & shallots. Pro tip: balance the sweetness of the soy sauce noodles with the pickled jalapeños within their condiment array. The bowl of soup that this comes with is a whole other meal with a giant pork bone (how it is traditionally served) and a bunch of fish cake in it. This is a favorite com tam restaurant of someone in our group. We went on Thursday evening and met up for an early dinner before this place got too busy for our group of 8. There is a small parking lot behind and in front of the restaurant but there are plenty of free street parking if all the spaces are taken. Orders were taken and we were given a small basket of little buttery croissants too enjoy while we waited for our food to arrive. Portions are large. My family has been coming here for what feels like two decades, and it's one of those places that just keeps doing its thing well. Over the years they've really stepped it up too from a nonfuzzy hole in the wall place back in its hay days. You can tell by how busy it is pretty much any time of day. I always go for the broken rice plates. The steamed egg cake still comes with that nice yolk in the middle, and everything is served on big plates and bowls that actually get filled. The portions are generous, and not just for show. The meats are flavorful, and the shredded pork has that slightly dry, fluffy texture that tastes housemade and really satisfying. Service is quick, which I appreciate in this crowded strip mall restaurant. They clearly keep things well prepped in the kitchen, so food and water cups come out fast even when it's packed. Glad we arrived during this time, as there was actually available parking in the small lot. Midway through our meal we noticed quite a line waiting outside, so I would recommend coming early. One we got called to be seated, we were given about 5 minutes before an older Vietnamese gentleman took our order. I ordered in Vietnamese and he was helpful with some questions. My wife wanted the bom rieu dac biet, but I believe the crab legs are out of season, so she got the normal one. She liked it a lot and said it's her new number one for Vietnamese food. I got the hu tieu dry noodle with the soup on the side. I found the sauce with the egg and glass noodles tasty with a sweet flavor to it. The broth had a large bone piece with just the right amount of savory flavor. The Banh beo was actually better than I expected, but each serving is quite large so we each had one and took the rest to go. They are served with a cup of fish sauce and some pieces of pork rinds. The shredded shrimp on top of each of the rice cakes was much fresher than I thought it would be and a major reason why they were good. The place is on the smaller side, but they are pretty efficient with the space they are working with. One thing to note is they do charge you 3% to use your credit card. My family's favorite place for Vietnamese food. I will rave about this place until the day I die. It is very popular with the local Vietnamese crowd, and they serve pretty authentic dishes. Obviously you can order in English, but be prepared as it is not a super streamlined experience catering to non-Vietnamese guests. Immerse yourself and prepare for great food. Their eggrolls are made of rice paper which makes for a lighter and airy-er crisp. They are my absolute favorite. I enjoy them in the bun thit nuong cha gio. I absolutely NEED to eat this every time I visit the area. The portions here are enormous so feel free to share. Other stand out items are the banh beo and the com tam/broken rice dish with everything on it. The com tam is to order, so you can feel free to pick out whatever individual elements you like and just order it as com tam with item1 item2 item3 so on. The best imo are the suon nuong/grilled pork chop, bi or shredded pork, and the cha or crispy meatloaf. Each com tam dish comes with of course a mountain of broken rice, pickled veggies, fatty green onions, and a fish sauce based dipping sauce. They also have pandan waffles at the counter which I love. They are not quite as chewy and bouncy as other places, but that's my preference as I like a more traditional waffle texture. Plenty of coconut shavings and coconut flavor. read more

Went to Com Tam Kieu in San Gabriel today for lunch and ordered the number 34 com tam bi cha bo nuong tau hu ky which is broken rice with shredded pork, egg with crab, charbroiled beef and bean curd skin. They are known for their broken rice so make sure to order that if you come here. It really comes down to what type foods you like along side your rice as all the plates are customizable. If they have that item you want, you can always ask them to add it on top of your order. The meats have a nice charred taste to it and everything goes well with fish sauce. I like to add chili to my fish sauce for a touch of spice. The plate comes with a couple cucumbers and pickled carrot and daikon. Each rice plate comes with a bowl of soup as well for you to start off. My friends and I ordered the banh beo which are mini rice cakes topped with shredded shrimp and I believe mung bean paste and fish sauce. The rice cakes were soft and loaded with plenty of toppings on top. You add some fish sauce and try to slurp it up in one gulp. My friends and I came on Wednesday at 1:30pm and there was about a 20 minute wait which was odd. They have plenty of tables inside but the parking lot is small. We were able to find street parking and you can always check the back for parking as well. Average price per plate is about $15 which is not too bad as it is a pretty large plate. Service is friendly and food comes out pretty quick after you order. Place accepts card but there is a 3% charge. No charge on debit card but cash is king. read more

Omg she's been SLEEPING on this damn spot. Such friendly service and flavorful dishes. This place doesn't skimp on quality ingredients! It's no wonder it's always a clusterF of a line for this spot! Can't go wrong with the combo vermicelli salad or their drinks. Their fish sauce here hits so well! It's just right not too overpowering and they don't skimp on the sauce! This place can get crowded, but the service is always fast and attentive, even during busy times. They have a large menu with plenty of Vietnamese options, making it a good choice for groups. They sometimes add tables on the sidewalk to accommodate more customers, which I personally don't love--I prefer eating inside. Food was amazing! We came with a table of 9 and were seated fairly quickly because we came right before the dinner rush. The space in between tables in a little tight but nothing I'd be bothered too much about. I ordered #39 and the plate was surprisingly huge. Did I finish it?
