I don't recommend the Cornish Hen, it was super dry and took way too long to make. The other dishes are good as well as the sides. Each side is good enough on its own, but the balance of freshness and clean (feels healthy but oh so tasty ). Would keep coming here, just avoid the Cornish Hen! The food here is great and prices are reasonable. We got seated around 15 minutes before closing due to being 7th in queue which has boring grind with the rating. Main concern was the hairs we found in our food. When scooping out sauce, there was a hair that was in the chili oil jar. It was quite long and wavy and was mixed into the chili flakes. When we picked up the spoon, we saw it and pulled the hair out from between the clump.. I didn't take a picture at first excusing that it happens since it's a public condiment. However, I did take a picture of the second hair. I ordered the signature Pho and after a few bites, as I pulled up more noodles, I saw this quite long and kind of gross hair entangled in my noodles. Hopefully it's not from where I think it came from but as a guy, the shape and texture of this hair doenst look like it comes off your head. This being in the soup that comes from the kitchen and is most likely shared by anyone who orders pho is a bit off putting. We did not complain since it was closing time already by the time we got our food and I didn't want to hold them up any longer. I remembered coming here with my mom when I was a kid and am kind of amazed that it has survived and thrived all these years later. Since this is still one of my mom's favorite casual restaurants (says a lot since she's a tough customer), I decided to make two consecutive visits on a Friday morning right when they open at 10 a.m. They already had a good amount of people dining in, and they turnover the tables quickly. I got their Bun Rieu (no pork blood & half vermicelli) and a single egg roll my first time back and it was the biggest bowl I've ever been served. It was delicious and they do not skimp on the protein. I love how they gave me a boatload of proper Vietnamese veggies/herbs and fermented shrimp paste alongside it. Most Vietnamese restaurants nowadays serve bastardized versions of a veggie/herb plate with their soup noodles to appease a devolved palette. Second time I was here, I got their dry combination egg & tapioca soy sauce noodles with the soup on the side and an order of a single egg roll. Man, do I miss this dish especially when it is served authentically. The bowl came with shrimps, thinly sliced pork, ground pork, a fried shrimp crisp, & quail eggs. But the flavor bomb comes from bits of fried shrimp, bacon fat, & shallots. Pro tip: balance the sweetness of the soy sauce noodles with the pickled jalapeños within their condiment array. The bowl of soup that this comes with is a whole other meal with a giant pork bone (how it is traditionally served) and a bunch of fish cake in it. This is a favorite com tam restaurant of someone in our group. We went on Thursday evening and met up for an early dinner before this place got too busy for our group of 8. There is a small parking lot behind and in front of the restaurant but there are plenty of free street parking if all the spaces are taken. Orders were taken and we were given a small basket of little buttery croissants too enjoy while we waited for our food to arrive. Portions are large. They are known for their broken rice (com tam) so that was what I had ordered. It arrived on a platter! The pork chop was juicy and tender. Everything was good. My family's favorite place for Vietnamese food. I will rave about this place until the day I die. It is very popular with the local Vietnamese crowd, and they serve pretty authentic dishes. Obviously you can order in English, but be prepared as it is not a super streamlined experience catering to non-Vietnamese guests. Immerse yourself and prepare for great food. Their eggrolls are made of rice paper which makes for a lighter and airy-er crisp. They are my absolute favorite. I enjoy them in the bun thit nuong cha gio. I absolutely NEED to eat this every time I visit the area. The portions here are enormous so feel free to share. Other stand out items are the banh beo and the com tam/broken rice dish with everything on it. The com tam is to order, so you can feel free to pick out whatever individual elements you like and just order it as com tam with item1 item2 item3 so on. The best imo are the suon nuong/grilled pork chop, bi or shredded pork, and the cha or crispy meatloaf. Each com tam dish comes with of course a mountain of broken rice, pickled veggies, fatty green onions, and a fish sauce based dipping sauce. They also have pandan waffles at the counter which I love. Went to Com Tam Kieu in San Gabriel today for lunch and ordered the number 34 com tam bi cha bo nuong tau hu ky which is broken rice with shredded pork, egg with crab, charbroiled beef and bean curd skin. They are known for their broken rice so make sure to order that if you come here. It really comes down to what type foods you like along side your rice as all the plates are customizable. If they have that item you want, you can always ask them to add it on top of your order. The meats have a nice charred taste to it and everything goes well with fish sauce. I like to add chili to my fish sauce for a touch of spice. The plate comes with a couple cucumbers and pickled carrot and daikon. Each rice plate comes with a bowl of soup as well for you to start off. My friends and I ordered the banh beo which are mini rice cakes topped with shredded shrimp and I believe mung bean paste and fish sauce. The rice cakes were soft and loaded with plenty of toppings on top. You add some fish sauce and try to slurp it up in one gulp. My friends and I came on Wednesday at 1:30pm and there was about a 20 minute wait which was odd. They have plenty of tables inside but the parking lot is small. We were able to find street parking and you can always check the back for parking as well. Average price per plate is about $15 which is not too bad as it is a pretty large plate. Wow, I barely recognized this place! I just visited for the first time since the renovation and menu revamp, and the vibe is completely different. The inside environment is super clean now and looks great with all the neon lighting. A few tips before you go: * The Wait: Even on a weekday, this place is packed. We had recommendations to try the appetizers of steamed rice cakes, broken rice dishes and dry noodles served w/ a side of bone broth soup. The bone broth soup was warming and full of flavor. My husband wasn't a big fan of the steamed rice appetizers but he really liked the dry noodles with grilled chicken and the soup. All of the dishes were very tasty and satisfying. If you have not tried this restaurant yet, it is worth the visit. The price is not like you would find in Vietnam, but the food was delicious & authentic. read more
