Visiting family in the area and went here. Nice place with welcoming bar area and outdoor seating in addition to restaurant tables. Great food and wonderful service! Four of us at the table and each had something different with everyone enjoying their order. I loved the Columbus House, food is simple fare but great and the Ambiance is rustic antique but the service???? I have been going there quite some time but only twice have I been served within the hour. I understand the food needs to be cooked and it takes some time but we're talking about a cheeseburger??? The main thing is that I've brought both my brother and sister-in-law when they were in from Iowa and we waited over an hour, the owner came and apologized but said a motorcycle group had come in and they were overwhelmed, OK I'll buy that. Then on two occasions, we came in, ordered and after 20 minutes another couple came in and sat at the next table. Obviously they knew the owner since he stopped to talk with them, they received there food, ate and were finished by the time we finally got served. The second time this happened I had taken my Sister from Iowa, my daughter from Buffalo and my grandson. The place was empty, then after 25 minutes another couple and an older woman entered, was greeted by the owner and I told my daughter they'll probably get served first. Needless to say that's exactly what happened and after an hour I went up to the bar and summoned the owner and told him this was ridiculous and that it seems if he knows people he serves them first and he claims they don't work like that. Then he he told me that it was on it's way. They came out with the order, put it on the table but we just left it sitting on the table and left the restaurant. My grandson was upset but there's a principle involved and this was the last straw. I will not be going there again unless I hear from folks I trust and find out that they've changed there ways. It's really a shame that customers he doesn't seem to know get treated so badly. read more

Rustic ambience in a nicely restored 200yo public house. The food is regional, fresh and flavorful, ranging from burgers to full dinners, and from wings to speidies, always with a special touch or twist. Try the custom brewed house ale. It's a genuine ale, not an obnoxiously hop-laced IPA. Refreshing. Prices are very reasonable. read more

Excellent food. We got two kinds of wings, garlic parm and medium, both were amazing. I had a bacon bourbon burger cooked perfectly that was saucey and delicious and we also shared an appetizer that was a bean dip on special that night which we ate every last bite of. I have been writing restaurant reviews for a couple of decades. I am a foodie and cook and some call me a food snob. I definitely know what I like and don't. The Public House in Columbus, NY is a hidden gem. First of all it is in a building that is over 200 years old. Given this and the historic quaintness of the town, you can feel the ages of good times here. The family that owns and runs the place are very friendly. My wife and I were just there this past Friday evening for the 8th time in 3 months. They always treat you with the hospitality of an old friend. The food is excellent. There are almost always specials, but some of the tried and true favorites are the pork chops, the fried pickle burger, Fried Chicken, and our new favorite...The Friday night Fish Fry. Generous portions at a very fair price. A very important inclusion to this would be to save some room for desert...don't miss out on that. Homemade deserts that are fantastic. They are reminiscent of the kind I would have after a Sunday dinner at my Grandma's house. If you are looking for a great place to eat, this is it. My wife and I travel 30 miles each way to come here. We usually stop at Roger's Conservation in Sherburne and walk the nature trails or Rexford Falls along Rt.80 before finishing off our picture perfect day at The Public House. read more

It was my first time there and was not impressed. I got a bowl of soup that was cold and there was a chunk of paper in it. The service was friendly but slow. My burger was cooked right but also cold. I guess the best thing I had there was my margarita. Very disappointed with over all experience. read more

This is the old Columbus Hotel that has been closed down for years. It has recently reopened under the name Columbus Public house. When I was a kid, I'd come here every Saturday night with my parents for dinner. This is way back in the 80's, when Kay and Jack Winton owned it. I have no idea who the new owners are. I was in today for the breakfast buffet. My first time being in this building since I was about 13 years old. The inside has been renovated, but some of the old things remain, which I absolutely loved. I immediately noticed that it was the same bar and light fixtures from when I was a kid, which brought back so many fond memories. I really had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately the experience was less than good. First of all, the wait staff was not well trained. Drink order of coffee and OJ, took forever. OJ arrived warm, with ice cubes in it. Seriously? The buffet consisted of over-cooked food that was not terrible but wasn't really good either. My wife could barely eat her French toast as it was very hard. I had the biscuits and sausage gravy which would have been really good if there wasn't way too much salt in it. To be completely fair, we arrived at 11:30 for the breakfast buffet, which is kind of late, but still.....seems they would freshen it up after it'd been sitting in a hot cart all morning. 2 breakfast buffets, 2 coffees and 2 small OJ's was $40. So, $15 a person for a breakfast buffet is pretty much on par with what you'd expect to pay at other places, but it kind of seemd high for the quality of what we had. To put the cherry on top, the waitress asked if I would prefer to leave a tip on my card, or on the table. I said I'll put it on my card, and she proceeded to watch over my shoulder as I wrote in the amount. Not cool. I'm gonna chalk this experience up to growing pains of a new place, inexperienced staff and hope for a better experience next time. Like I said, because of the nostalgia factor, and memories of going here with my dad, who I no longer have, I really wanted to like it here. Maybe next time. read more

As a previous reviewer stated this is a reincarnation of the original Columbus Hotel, now called the Columbus Public House. Our dining experience was last night at which time the three of us went there to have a few beers and dinner. We all had the Beef Vegitable Soup, clearly homemade, which was excellent. Simply prepared using prime ingredients and not over salted as you usually find when dining out. For dinner two of us had the Shepard's Pie which was also clearly homemade and served in a generous portion. The third person had a Cheese Burger Deluxe that was served on a very tasty bun along with hand cut french fries that we're exceptional. The appeared to be either air fried of baked in the oven, definitely not deep fried. This was a real enjoyable surprise. For desert they mentioned having a chocolate devilsfood cake with peanut butter icing. This is actually one of my favorite deserts of all time and I found the peanut icing to be the best part. It was pleasantly sweet and creamy while not overdone with too much sugar, it was just right. Overall it was a good experience with a fairly basic home cooked menu that was clearly excellent as far as the food was concerned. Since they have only been fully open for 4-5 weeks they are still going through some growing pains so don't expect perfection in the overall process. For example the ran out of two of their on tap craft beers but that is not the worst problem an inn could have since it means they are already doing a steady trade. I'm sure that a few months down the road much of the operational challenges will be solved. For now the community seems to be responding well with at least 30-40 people attending dinner last night. As far as the owner goes, he is a Sherburne native with extensive experience in the catering business, who along with his family provide the friendly and caring service. Resurrecting the Columbus Hotel was no small feat. This is the best iteration of this location to date. Burger and fries were very good. Assortment of wings is impressive. Beer menu could be expanded. Staff and service are nothing short of amazing. The owners are attentive and responsive. Good people work hard here. read more
