I recently had the pleasure of doing business with Colorado Engine. They are honest people with a great family-owned business! I recently inherited a car, and there was a question of whether its engine needed to be replaced. The first thing I found out about Colorado Engine is that they have the best deals. For my vehicle, they would install a remanufactured engine with 4-year no-fault parts and labor guarantee with no mileage limit, for $7260: $4365 for the engine and $2895 to install it. They have used engines available too. And they were glad to spend time explaining all the details on the phone - no rush.  I called two other places, and neither even offered remanufactured engines. They have mechanics who personally rebuild existing engines. The process takes about 5 weeks, costing $7500 - $8400. And their warranties weren't as good. So just call Colorado Engine first! (Unless you are particularly attached to your own personal engine.)  So I was getting ready to go ahead and get the engine. I figured it was either that or get a different car. But I couldn't make a different car work out financially. So I called and told them I wanted to start the process to get a remanufactured engine. And they said, "Can we look at your car first, just to see if it really needs the engine? Maybe we can fix it." So I said "Sure." I brought it in and they examined It. And it didn't need an engine! It only needed a radiator cap, and in the future, a fan clutch! I don't gamble, but I felt like I had won the lottery! These people are not only kind, but knowledgeable and honest, too!  So if your car needs an engine replacement, call Colorado Engine - you'll be very happy! read more

After being told by several mechanics for several years that "It wasn't worth it" (their decision not mine--customer should make that decision) to be bothered sealing various leaks or addressing my rough running, '99 Ford Explorer & being told by the Ford dealer to" just buy a new car" (again, not the dealer's decision--besides I don't like the new milk-toast versions), I found Colorado Engine during my search for an engine replacement thinking I was stuck with no option but to buy a new engine (everything else has been replaced) . Of all the shops I contacted, I was impressed that Colorado Engine was the most knowledgeable & open in sharing with me by phone what was likely the situation with my 260K vehicle basis what I described & provided the fairest quote & reasonable process to determine if I even needed a new engine. They were neither patronizing nor vague. After actually bringing in my vehicle, turns out there wasn't even a reason to buy & install a new engine as other shops shrugged in resignation that i should do. There were just some tweaks & seals they could do to extend its life (which I knew, but no one else would do this for me when I HAD asked them to do exactly that!!!) So, 5 stars for being honest, fair, & for not trying to rip-off or condescend to the woman! Another 5 stars because my vehicle ran better after I drove away from their shop than it had during the last 3 years that'd I'd been continually asking other mechanics help. All for a several hundred $$ vs thousands for a new engine. My only negative would be the fact that they are always so busy that they are not able to schedule-in repairs without a longish leadtime. (Actually, why I hesitated to write this review! But, clearly the cat is already out of the bag with all the other 5 star reviews :-D) An honest shop like this is rare these days & I mean no disrespect to Mechanics; my godfather was one. Despite being 30 minutes away & having no other transportation to get to/fr them, they will be my go-to mechanic from now on. I went to the dealer for a some suspension noise and was told a bushing had worn out. The dealer said it would be $700 + labor for a new control arm. Skeptical, I was referred to these guys who honestly told me to just replace the $50 bushing. They had my car rolling after a few hours. Car has been running great for years. Came back a year later, they helped me when I had a seized caliper. Again they didn't try to upsell me with a new rotor and just machined my disc back into working order and got my caliper unstuck. Highly recommend this family owned, local business. Surprised to see the negative reviews, after reading them, they actually confirm my recommendation. I took them for what they were, just bad experiences. Everyone has bad experiences and needs to vent about them. It's how the business responds is what we should care about. (Unlike the guys from F&R Auto Sales that's gone viral on the news. 1,500 reviews in 24 hours. If you don't know what I'm talking about, search them. It's hilarious.) You can see from Co. Engine's responses that these guys took the time and made efforts to deal with these "difficult" customers. I am a lifelong customer to many businesses that I had horrible experiences at, all because the proactive owner cared and made active efforts to resolve our issues. Ok so I went there to get a NEW engine. I got a re-manufactured engine posing as a crate engine. I took their engine out and returned it. I got half my money back which wasn't enough for the things that they did. They replaced my gray painted torque converter cover for this rusty piece of metal among other parts that they swapped out for my new parts that were on it. Also the engine they put in was leaking out of the rear main seal after only 500 miles. Few tips for anyone 1: A crate engine is brand new from the factory. Despite what they call their re-manufactured engines a crate engine is 100% brand new from the factory. 2: There is no core charge on a crate engine from summit racing. It's $5 more but with free shipping and you don't get that pesky core charge and handling fee. In the end I paid them over $2200 for new shocks and some new parts and did most of the work myself. Do yourself a favor and buy a crate engine and install it yourself or have someone you know install it. You'll save yourself the core charge and have a brand new engine. You'll thank me later. I was going to let it go at the money they gave back when I returned the engine but then saw they switched out my torque converter cover and that's it. I may still take them to court. Originally I paid over $4500 to have them tell me I'm an idiot. What a disappointment. This only applies to the chevy 5.7l 350cu.in. If you have something different it will most likely be a different price so shop around. Don't forget a crate engine should be 100% brand new from the factory. Just cause it's in a crate doesn't mean it's a crate engine!! read more

I called several shops around the Denver metro area to replace the engine on my 1998 Isuzu Trooper. Most shops were reluctant or hesitant to work on my SUV. When I called Colorado Engine, they had a re-manufactured engine in stock and seemed confident that they can do the work. I also had them install a manual locking hub on my 4x4. I wanted to wait a few months and a put few thousand miles on my Trooper before writing this review. I'm happy to say that my Isuzu Trooper is running great and I'm very happy with the work they performed. What they quoted me was what they charged. No hidden costs. A bit of advice though. Make sure you have a reasonable expectation on how long the work will take. They originally quoted me that my car will only take a week to finish. However, there were 3 to 4 cars ahead of me so that was 1 car a week that they had to work on. So it took about 4 weeks before they worked on my car. That wasn't a problem since I had a spare vehicle to use to drive to work. Just make sure that you know how many cars they are currently working on before they can work on your car. read more

I would not recommend doing business with Colorado Engine. I brought my truck to them to have a rebuilt long block installed and was quoted $9500. I was made aware at the time that if they ran into other parts that needed to be replaced the bill could go up. When the job was done, the total was over $16,000 and I had no choice but to take their word that all of the extra parts needed to be replaced. The day after I picked up the truck, it started having drivability problems and the check engine light came on. The truck had never had these issues before they worked on it. I spoke to them on the phone a few times and ended up returning it to them a little while later for them to sort it out. They had my truck for over four months and supposedly did all kinds of things to it trying to fix it. They thought the turbocharger was bad. I agreed to replace it if it fixed the problem. The turbocharger didn't fix it. Then they thought the catalytic converter was bad. I agreed to have them install it and I was told that it could be removed if it didn't fix it. The I would catalytic converter didn't fix it. Eventually, they determined that the computer was faulty. They told me that I had to pay for some of the work they did trying to fix it before they would replace the computer. That work included a replacement turbocharger and catalytic convertor. As they had previously told me that the catalytic convertor could be taken back off if it didn't fix the problem, I asked them to do so but the best they would do was to take $100 off the price. They also told me that the $1750 they charged me for the replacement turbocharger was their cost for the part. Since they were basically holding my truck for ransom at this point, I had no choice but to pay the bill and authorize them to replace the computer. Three weeks later, the replacement computer was installed at a cost of $666.00 and they felt that they were done with my truck. When I picked the truck up from them, it was filthy inside and out and it was nearly out of fuel. I was pretty disappointed as they had also charge me $40.00 for fuel. By this time, I had already purchased another vehicle as I couldn't be without one for that long so I cleaned it up and listed it for sale to try and recoup some of the money I had spent. Two weeks later, I had put less than 20 miles on the truck and I was taking it for a drive and the same drivability issue and check engine light came back. I called Colorado Engine and left a message for Terry but he never called me back. It's been four weeks since then and I'm stuck with nearly $20,000 into a truck that I don't need but can't sell as it won't pass an emissions test. The license plates have expired but I can't renew them until I get the truck repaired so I can't even legally park it in my driveway. I recently spoke to the shop that supplied them with the turbocharger and I was told that they charged me more than $500 over their cost. I also spoke to the business that I was told supplied the rebuilt engine and they have never heard of Colorado Engine. Even if they were to call me and offer to try to repair my truck, I have no confidence in their abilities to do so and now I'm questioning whether or not all of the parts they replaced were faulty or if they actually replaced them in the first place. read more

I was told that my Ford diesel 7.3 engine had blown a head gasket from 'my' diesel guy across town who has done a ton of work for me over the years. Colorado Engine gave me a better price to drop in a remanufactured engine, so I brought it to them to make it happen. They told me right away that they took a good look at the engine and couldn't see anything wrong with it - the problem was just a couple hundred $ worth of radiator work! They could've just threw in a full engine and charged me $10K We're now a lifelong brand loyalist for this team. The trucks gone another 1000 miles - no problems. I drive a 2004 Pontiac Vibe with 275,000 miles on it. I have put all but 147 miles on my car, so I know it pretty well. Whenever I take my car to a shop for service or if I call around for pricing on service, I get treated like I don't know anything about my car. When I took my car to Colorado Engine, I was treated with respect and yes, they listened to me when I told them what was going on. Because my car has a Toyota engine, I had taken it to the Toy Doctor for an estimate on a new engine because mine currently has a head gasket leak. They estimated between $6,000.00 and $8,000.00. Now, one might be asking why I would want to keep a car with so many miles on it and replace the engine. Well, I love my car. It's more dependable than many people have been in the years I have had it and it drives like a champ in the snow. In addition, it was paid off long ago and who wants a car payment with higher insurance and higher repair bills? I drove out there and talked to them about a re-manufactured engine as well as one that was used. I asked them how they knew a used engine was gong to be good and what process did they have to ensure the engine was going to be o.k. They told me they get their engines from their 30 year supplier and if there's a problem with what they get, they deal with it between them and their supplier. Their price for a re-manufactured engine was $3,095.00 plus the flat fee of $1595.00 for installation, three year warranty. The used engine was $1795.00 with 66,000 miles, 30 day warranty. Because this is a big expenditure, I took the information, but before I left, I made an appointment to get the car really checked out to see just how bad things were. I took the car back the next week. Tony got it up on the rack and after a while he came and got me to look at everything he found. Yes, I have a head gasket leak, but certainly not enough to replace the engine over. YIPEEE!!! Yes, I do need belt replacements and new water pump. It was the water pump that had been leaking the most on my garage floor with a slight combination of oil from the head gasket. I also need the mope door actuator replaced which interestingly went awry the same day I got the car back after airbag recall work done by a dealership. Tony is great! He topped off the coolant, drained some of the oil as it was overfilled, added a couple of bolts to replace plastic ones lost along the way, and took the time to show me, while the car was on the rack, where the problems were and what it would take to fix them. He took the car out for a short drive to make sure the car was not over-heating because of other concerns I had and gave me a written estimate for cost of repairs. For all of this, and his time, I was charged $50.00. Will I go back? Absolutely. It will be the only place I take my car for repair, unless I can't get there for some reason. read more

We have a 2002 Ford Explorer that we LOVE it fits our family perfectly and it was PAID FOR. We live in the mountains on dirt roads and have 2 dogs that go everywhere with us. It starting running badly and after a diagnostic test, we found out that the engine was in bad condition. We looked at buying a new vehicle, but could not find one that would work as great for us as our old Explorer. It is in excellent condition cosmetically. Almost all of the used cars we looked at were high mileage and in poor condition cosmetically. We opted to have the engine rebuilt in our wonderful Explorer. We are so glad we did. Unrequested, they researched correct paint colors to ensure the engine block color matched 1953 MG colors. Several unique one-off install modifications were made to ensure correct fit and a safe, well engineered engine installation. I recently had to replace the engine in an '06 Ford Escape. I called and got an estimate and an approximate timeline for the install. When I towed my car in, they were very helpful in making sure I knew what to expect, and if there were any additional costs for parts, why they might be necessary. I felt very comfortable that they knew what they were doing and they were completely up-front about what needed to happen. The install was done in a reasonable amount of time and the only difference in cost came from needing to replace parts we didn't anticipate needing to replace when we first discussed the job. The best part was turning the key and listening to the new engine purr and getting the car back on the road after a long time in storage. This team is everything an engine shop should be. I've been taking my cars and trucks to Colorado Engine for a number of years now and have always received good work at fair prices. Those repairs have ranged from a new transmission for my F-250, to a rebuilt transmission for an Audi A8. Their prices have been very fair and the repairs have lasted many years. Working with George and Terry is always professional and a pleasure. It's hard to find auto repair services that can do the little stuff but then handle the big stuff like a replacement engine or transmission which is always a major expense. Everyone here was very nice and helpful. However my truck was having clutch issues so they replaced the clutch and the slave cylinder and gave my truck back with a check engine light on, which wasn't on when I gave my truck to them. They said it was just a bad connection on the C02 sensor but couldn't fix it. A few days later the clutch was acting up again I took it back and they said it sounds like I need new syncros. After spending $1100 dollars It was hard to believe I was still having clutch issues and that I'd have to spend $1800 dollars for new syncros. I just took my truck to another shop who said from the symptoms I was having it didn't sound like I needed a new clutch. He took a look at it and told me I have a bent push rod going to the master cylinder. Which should account for my issues. WTF. I could be wrong but I think I was taken advantage of and that these guys are crooked. read more

Based on my experience with Colorado Engine thus far I have to say that I challenge the validity of some of these reviews. I have a 68 Bronco that I brought to CE after a horrible experience with Superior Motors. My motor and transmission had less than 5k miles on it since the last rebuild, they told me both needed a full rebuild, I was skeptical but went along with it hoping that if I just had them rebuild everything that I could feel secure in knowing I could get from point A to point B. I picked the truck up when they first said it was ready and made it about 5 miles down the road before it overheated in traffic. They came and picked it up and I found another way to get to work. I must have put 1000 miles on that truck just driving it back and forth from their shop, every time I got it back from them something different was wrong, sometimes I didn't even make it out of the parking lot before I was calling someone to come pick me up from the shop again. They were short on solutions and knowledge leaving me to troubleshoot and provide them my findings, I however am no mechanic so this was a little frustrating. They kept my truck for weeks at a time typically culminating in a disappointing and inconvenient experience each time I went to retrieve the truck from them. Ultimately they told me that they did not want to perform work on the truck. On one occasion Terry (manager or owner) told one of the mechanics to get my truck out of the parking lot before something else breaks on it, this was after they moved my power steering reservoir and lost some of the parts for it which had PS fluid shooting about 10 feet in the air. I'm a very patient customer and they told me such on more than one occasion. My expectations were not out of line and they were aware of this. Out of frustration I took the truck over to another shop and had them take a look, the results were rather troubling. The other shop showed me that Colorado Engine had dropped the engine in on faulty frame brackets and motor mounts in such a manner that my headers were resting on the frame. I called Colorado Engine and they informed me that they wouldn't even fix the header leak caused by their bad installation, as you can imagine I had no interest on having them correct the motor mount issue due to their lack of integrity. I would later determine that Colorado Engine had used the wrong pulley combination on the motor causing the overheating issue. I did so many round trips to this shop, I paid them in excess of 10k for work performed, it was nothing but a waste of money and time, I could not possibly recommend them to anyone and I would advise you stay clear of them. read more
