This place has gone downhill. I've been coming here since the '80s 's. At one time it was the only diner I would go to in Middletown. Americana diner was packed so I came over here cuz I was so freaking hungry . The Food SUCKED. French onion soup was tasteless and The cheese wasn't great. They must have put an entire cup of breadcrumbs which sopped up most of the soup. Anyway, then they brought me the French dip. Who the hell makes a French dip with American cheese and tomatoes? Open-faced? These dummies do. I had them send that back. I was nice about it of course and said instead of that "just bring me an American grilled cheese sandwich with sliced tomato". Guess what came instead? Grilled cheese sandwich with mozzarella cheese. I'm so glad I just ordered that dumb sandwich because I can't imagine having had the French dip. I did taste the sauce for the French dip. It tasted like soy sauce. I won't be coming back here anytime soon. The service was pretty good though and I did give a tip because it wasn't her fault. As a side note, the woman with the wide hips and large butt with really bad roots and her fake blonde hair gave me a really dirty look instead of apologizing for a crap meal. read more

I had ordered the Grand Slam breakfast at CD. The pancakes werw light and fluffy. Eggs were scrambled well. Bacon was soft and the sausage was cooked well done. Best. Diner. In. Middletown. No joke. Colonial is a masterpiece that has lasted in Middletown for decades, and with good reason. Their level of service is top notch. The waitresses are always so pleasant and nice, and love to converse with you. They check up frequently to make sure everything is going great and that you are happy with your meal. The diner itself is a true testament of its time. The theme has never changed ever in my life. There is no need for an update or a remodel, when you step through the doors it has the appearance of the decade it was built in, and that's wonderful. You never have to worry about it being open or closed either, because Colonial is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are never closed. My friends and I have this phrase that you've never really lived until you've gone on a 2am trip to Colonial, and we've done that plenty of times. Colonial is a great diner, honestly I would say it's the best diner I've ever been in. You should give it a chance if you're thinking about stopping in. read more

Ah good ole Middletown. You're a crap-hole but I still love you! Whenever I go home I have to, have to, HAVE TO make a stop at the Colonial diner. So many memories come flooding back, like when I'd have a break from class and just head over to get a bite to eat with friends or being drunk as a skunk after partying ridiculously and needing some food to sober me up. Yes, I love the Colonial diner! Cheese fries and gravy!!! No one, not anywhere in the United States make cheese fries and gravy the way the Colonial Diner does. This is the one menu item I long for the most. So fattening but so delicious. My mouth is watering thinking about the mozzarella on the fries and the delicious gravy just oozing all over those fries. Best diner in Middletown. The food is pretty good depending on what you get. Staff is usually good and attentive. It's open 24/7 which is great for a late night bite! It's clean inside & the large windows are nice because they let in tons of light. Good breakfast and there's daily specials for a good price. I personally love their chocolate milk and carrot cake. Such a nice waitress, and such a great diner atmosphere, with fun Italianate lamps on the ceiling, and a view of fall leaves out the many big windows. I heartily wish I had ordered a breakfast dish--because other folks around me were getting waffles and pancakes and eggs, which looked terrific. I opted for an overpriced (all included) broiled salmon and vegetables and soup and pudding, because I was ravenous. The soup was great (Yankee bean.) Everything else was terrible. Terrible. Mushy unseasoned overcooked vegetables, an insult to vegetables everywhere. And the fish had a weird, suspect, possibly gone bad taste. Could not eat it. Tried. Could not begin to eat the vegetables. Even the pudding, which normally would perform a redemptive function, had that sad, chalky, refrigerator-tasting faux whipped cream on it. It seemed to be the kind of pudding that comes from a box, and to have sat in the cooler for a while, picking up other flavors. I told the cashier how inedible I found almost everything, and he said I should have told the waitress. But she never asked, despite picking up my nearly untouched plate. EVERY restaurant/diner gets bad reviews from haters but this seems that the reviews just are just looked at as - we'll no one looks at the reviews. Well I got news for you - there are other places one can eat and all it takes is one bad experience for someone not to ever visit again and bad news travels faster than good. Food was average barely ate all of it, just took bite out of each peice of the chicken and ribs, the ribs where ok but needed more sauce. Feel the price was high for what we really received. Especially when we ask pit server if It was worth it and she said it was alot of food and then I received it and there was 4 small ribs and a small piece of chicken. If I tasted good I wpul d have ate everythig no problem. My boss got the steak and he said it was good defiantly would do it again but again the price was high for the amount given. I have been to the Colonial Diner several times. It's your typical upstate NY diner with nothing special but nothing bad either. Food is good (breakfast and lunch) and the service has always been good too. Prices are about average for a diner like this, not the cheapest but the place keeps you coming back. read more

Five min off 84 and worth the trip. We pulled in to two good signs. Overflow parking lot and locals at the counter. Waitress was quick and accurate. Didn't blink when the kids all had special requests. Hubby had great breakfast for dinner. Wraps were great. Turkey dinner came with desert too. Four of us plus an app for 66 dollars. Can't complain. One week ago I called the Colonial Diner when the caterer for our daughter's after wedding brunch cancelled 10 days before the wedding weekend. I told them what my crisis was and these complete strangers sprang into action and promised to take care of us. This morning they delivered delicious food and sooo much of it. All of our 120 brunch guests raved about all of the food and especially the French toast and sausage (many said the sausage was the best they ever had). I personally love this diner. I docked 1 star because they got my husbands order wrong. The coffee was very good our waitress friendly and informative. I ordered the old fashioned French toast half pork roll and half sausage roll. So so DELICIOUS! My husband ordered the Colonial breakfast (ny steak and eggs) Hemoglobin ordered it to be cooked medium. However they cooked well done. He was too hungry to try and get our waitresses attention and did a bunch of chewing. I'm sure had it been cooked medium he'd love it a little more. He also said it was not seasoned at all. So he seasoned it himself with the salt provided on table. I was nice & shared my deliciousness with him. He did say the eggs and hash was very good. Sad he had not good food because mine was yumm! We were enroute to Maine and wanted to have a diner as opposed to a fast food meal while on the road. Stopped off at Colonial. The staff was friendly and their baked goods looked amazing. I got the fish and chips. The breading was very crispy and the fish was just okay. Fries were fine and it was an interesting addition have a soup or salad with the meal. Got the lima bean soup, which was again just okay. My husband got the Reuben which was HUGE and (3rd times the charm) just okay. He said the corn beef was somewhat of a low quality. And even though the desserts behind the counter looked really good we were way to full to even consider it. Would we go back... no, but it was a fun experience during our travels. read more

We are from out of state and didn't realize everything closes pretty early up here. Found this on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. Our waitress was an absolute darling. She was sweet and accommodating, letting us swap out stuff to our heart's content. Fiance ordered a veggie omelet and had bacon subbed for the potatoes. The omelet was huge and cooked to perfection. He hates runny egg omelets and this one was perfect! I wasn't overly hungry so I had Rice Krispies. Was pleasantly surprised to get two of the little boxes instead of one. This is a really fabulous diner. The prices are all reasonable on the traditional diner food and it was all SOOO tasty. I attended with a few friends here late last night and we were a bit rowdy because we hadn't seen each other in forever. However, the waitress was a champ and she treated us so nicely regardless of how rowdy we got. Haha. I really appreciate her, she was such a sweetheart. The food was super good, too. My SO & I got Veggie Burgers, My Sister & BFF got Chicken Sandwiches, and my Brother and his SO got An Omelette and French Toast. We all had dessert and had super enjoyable time! I have ordered the same thing every day for the past week and the price has been different every single time. I don't get it... What does the price depend on, what mood my waitress is in? The price is one thing and quality is another... until today, the food has been good. This morning however, I was served a muffin that must've been over a week old and was told it was "fresh". This place is understated. You can tell as soon as you pull in that it's the type of place that locals frequent more than passersby. So what? The staff is pleasant, the food is affordable and it's delicious! I had homemade clam chowder along with some baked macaroni and cheese. The boy had a real nice looking bacon cheeseburger and all in all, it was an enjoyable dining experience. I have no reason to go back out to Middletown unless I'm on a mission to go find something that isn't in my neck of the woods for some reason (i.e.: gander mountain). Okay diner but most of the food is just that diner food, gone down in quality over the years and is really just a everything's closed no other options type of place. Service is pretty awful now a days too, you can be sat and wait over 10 minutes to put in a drink order or see your waitress. It's also pretty expensive for a diner. Take out isn't bad but they will tell you 20 minutes and it will take 50 or longer. read more

Every accommodating- we were a party of twenty. We ended up at two tables, (it was the best they could do considering the size of our party) one of eleven and one of nine. They managed to pull this together in about fifteen minutes during a Sunday brunch rush hour. we love diner food and this food is great! We had breakfast and the coffee was superb! The waitress was great, friendly and checked on us often. If we are ever back in the area again, we will be returning here. The diner was clean and the amount of food was decent for the price. However, I had to ask the waitress for a glass of water four times. The forth time she said she would be right back. I saw her go to the fountain, get three soda refills for one table, then two more for another table. I was so thirsty, I chewed my daughter's left over ice. The worst food I've ever had. Went for breakfast, the coffee was bitter, my "over easy" eggs were solid as a rock, the corned beef hash was raw and cold, and the toast just had a glob of butter in the middle of it. We couldn't complain though, the one time the waitress came to our table she was talking on the phone and just refilled one coffee and walked away. The bathroom was also nasty, and the cake in their case was discolored on the edges and looked to be at least 3 days old. Great place to stop for a bite to eat! Friendly service and very affordable meals. Whenever I am in Middletown, I like to stop in for lunch for their Greek salad. Lots of fresh feta cheese and crunchy lettuce. Tasty little greek olives too. With a wide variety to choose from. there is something for everyone on the menu. A few years ago, I stopped going here because an employee who was taking our takeout order via phone had laughed and made fun of us loudly after asking for us to hold on! needless to say I was put off from spending my money here. Years later and the current staff are all kind, patient, and welcoming. So today I took my son to get breakfast as we usually do once a week. This morning I went to a different diner than usual becuase we were in a rush. The bacon was microwaved soggy and the eggs were dry and over cooked,the home fries were burnt and had no flavor.

I struggled between 4 and 5 stars. Because as far as a Diner goes its awesome. You can come late at night for that greasy hearty food you need, or you can come early to have a coffee and make friends with some old timers. But at the end of the day I put 4 because it's something I don't go to often, but when you have the craving for this style of food there's only 1 option to satisfy it and that's this diner. read more

Normally I would have rated this diner as a 4...but after my last 3 experience I'm down to a 1 and will not be returning! 3 visits ago....about 1 week ago, went for breakfast. Asked for "soft" bacon (bc I HATE hard crispy bacon that crumbles when u bite it). My bacon came out RAW!!!! Really????? Last night (Sat evening around 5pm). We called to do take out....was put on hold bc the hostess doesn't take orders....the phone was placed on the counter and I was left "on hold" for 10 minutes. Pointless to hang up and call back bc their phone was just off the hook!!!! So, we decided to go and sit and wait the 15-20 min to get a to go order. We arrived...took 5 min to have the hostess come talk to us. Then she informed us that a waitress needed to come take our order. I informed her about being on hold...she searched for the phone....and hung it up! Again, we stood waiting for an additional 10 min only to be told repeatedly by the hostess someone will come take our order.....WE LEFT!!!! Worst service I've ever gotten. Took 10 minutes for the waitress to get to our table, when there was three tables in the whole diner. It then took her up until right before our food came out to bring us our drinks, after she sat down at the counter looking through the menu for a good five minutes. We ordered an appetizer which was brought out to us with all our food. After receiving our food, I asked for my steak med and was brought out a raw steak, as well as we ordered a crispy chicken sandwich and was brought grilled instead.
