A blast from the past retro look for this diner, plus awesome sun room they have. Service was pretty friendly and pretty quick to get your order and bring the food. For the food itself, really like to see a breakfast special section where you get a drink with your meal if either coffee, tea and a small juice, appreciate not having to order a separate drink. I'm still confused as to what exactly was served to us... the chicken parmesan was served with orange slices and raisin bread. The Greek salad was full of BONE-IN anchovies (gross on many levels) and olives with pits. The French dip had tons of diced tomatoes. In addition, the chicken Parmesan was so overcooked it was hard to cut. The chicken wings were also very dry/overcooked. The Greek salad was supposed to be served with bread and a soup and it came with neither. I had to ask for the soup. Still never got the bread. Where do start! Sliced London Broil was AWFUL just awful. The Sliced London Broil were chucks of over done meat. It was like chewing on a shoe. Philly Cheese Steak meat chewy and no flavor and they charged me $1.14 for extra onions!!Fries & Mozzarella Cheese the french fries were stale and the cheese was one clumping the middle. The place looks nice the average diner look, not too busy. My server is very sweet, you don't get that kindness much these days. The split pea soup was ok, it had small chunks on ham and the croutons tasted good. Broiled fillet of flounder was soggy and salty. The baked potato was good but they gave me margarine instead of butter. The string beans and red pepper were well cooked. We didn't see a waiter or waitress for twenty minutes when he told us "I'll be right there". My wife used the restroom. Then I did with my son. Still no one took our order. We proceeded to leave & then the young dude who was our waiter looked at us as if he was shocked we were walking out & said "I was coming over..." About thirty minutes & we couldn't even get an order in. I wonder how long we would have waited for our food if we were actually able to get an order in. The Colonial Diner is a classic diner on Dolson Ave in Middletown. I might even say that it is one of my favorite diners in Middletown! It has its own parking lot and plenty of seating on the inside. The menu is extensive and the staff is always friendly. Some of the items that I recommend is their soup or their rice pudding. It's seriously that good. read more

This is honestly the worst experience I have ever encountered in my entire life of eating out. My co workers and myself ordered French toast with homefries and bacon, pancakes homefries bacon and sausage, and a chicken quesadilla with French fries. $52.62 total. Which is insane. We are not even 5 minutes down the road from the diner, and the food was all ice cold. My coworker called explaining the situation and they asked what we wanted to do because it'll come out the same way. After an exhausting conversation they said okay bring the food back and they'll remake it. My coworker went back and the owner started arguing with him saying since there was 1 piece missing from quesadilla she wouldn't remake it, when on the phone the man said they would. She took back the quesadilla and the bacon with homefries from my French toast and never gave them back. When my coworker came back we were missing his chicken quesadilla and my bacon and homefries. My co worker went back again and asked for new quesadilla or refund and the owner laughed in his face and said no and handed me back the now 45 minute old quesadilla. I then called myself and explained the situation and the man on phone said okay he wants to help but doesn't want the owner to know, and he said "Don't send the 2 guys that came here" I said what do you mean? He said "The Spanish one and the black one was rude and acting loud". I have all of this on recording and would gladly attach the voice memo's to this review but I can't. I'm sick that someone could be so openly racist and unhelpful over a simple solution which would be to just remake the food or offer a refund. I didn't expect a simple order to turn into this unacceptable situation. This is One of the few diners I been to in Middletown. I came for brunch and ordered a custom omelet and pancakes. The omelet was sausage, cheese and tomatoes and it was really well seasoned and delicious.The pancakes were a bit dry and just your average everyday pancakes. Overall, it was a good experience coming here. I'm looking forward to try their fish and chips some other time. read more

The Colonial is a staple in Middletown - if you grew up here or have lived here long enough, you've probably been here at LEAST once. If not many, many times lol The longevity of this diner is absolutely part of its charm. Food-wise - pretty basic diner food. They can get very busy, especially on weekend mornings, and as with any similar diner, service and speed/quality of food is sometimes dependent on how busy they are (which is why some of my favorite meals here were very late at night when I was a teenager and we had the place to ourselves lol). Servers are generally very friendly and attentive. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you've never been. read more

My girlfriend had two eggs. I will tell you that I do understand the criticism of an earlier reviewer about the soup - it really didn't have much flavor. I ordered it with that pre-warning - but I still wanted to try it for myself. I wouldn't order that particular item again. My turkey breast was fine - and the eggs were good but nothing to write home about. The Colonial Diner is a good place to go when you want variety, but as we know when there's a lot of variety there's not much of anything down great here. It's also at an advantage as your go to eatery because it is open 24/7. It's a place you go to for convenience but not really for great food, the food is just ok, it's too over priced to be considered good. I think the food is better during breakfast times, but as soon as it hits darker hours it loses finesse. $13 microwaved nachos with cheap, greasy, clumped up cheese with a side of Aldi's brand salsa and NO guacamole NO sour cream or even refried beans is just not even worth half the amount it's priced. read more

I asked for motza ball which I paid extra for, it had no flavor. He had meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Been here before it's nothing great but usually ok. The host was our waiter. It was dead with only three tables. Told him our order I could tell he was not paying attention. Kept playing with his diamond tennis bracelet. He brought the food out it was wrong. He argued with is and wouldn't take the food back and fix it. Burger was plain as always but I am ok with it. I've eaten here many times, but only once in the last 45 years. Visiting friends in Middletown, one of them suggested the Colonial Diner, and we all thought that was a splendid idea. We came for lunch, and the staff was a bit harried, but friendly. We eventually got served nicely. The menu selection is extensive for a diner, and I had one of the lunch specials (see photo); scallops, which I liked a lot. Everyone else liked their food as well. Convivial and approachable, the Colonial showed why it's been around for so long. They expanded from the last time I visited, but I recognized the booths immediately. My son had eggs and pancakes and barely scratched the top of those pancakes they were so big. My husband god French onion soup dripping with cheese and a gyro. Real pieces of chicken. One minor drawback was that you can't substitute things like dessert; my child's meal came with ice cream and mine came with pudding or Jell-o, neither of which I wanted, but they would not let me sub for ice cream... This place has gone downhill. I've been coming here since the '80s 's. At one time it was the only diner I would go to in Middletown. Americana diner was packed so I came over here cuz I was so freaking hungry . The Food SUCKED. French onion soup was tasteless and The cheese wasn't great. They must have put an entire cup of breadcrumbs which sopped up most of the soup. Anyway, then they brought me the French dip. Who the hell makes a French dip with American cheese and tomatoes? Open-faced? These dummies do. I had them send that back. I was nice about it of course and said instead of that "just bring me an American grilled cheese sandwich with sliced tomato". Guess what came instead? Grilled cheese sandwich with mozzarella cheese. I'm so glad I just ordered that dumb sandwich because I can't imagine having had the French dip. I did taste the sauce for the French dip. It tasted like soy sauce. I won't be coming back here anytime soon. The service was pretty good though and I did give a tip because it wasn't her fault. As a side note, the woman with the wide hips and large butt with really bad roots and her fake blonde hair gave me a really dirty look instead of apologizing for a crap meal. read more

I have been to this diner about 4-5 times in the past two years, and am rating it overall for those visits. Pros: Good lunch specials, tasty food, huge selection, in general friendly staff Cons: If it's not a special, it can be expensive, service is slow. This place can get pretty busy around lunch time because of it's specials, which in general are a good deal. I most recently got the baked macaroni and cheese, the large, which was HUGE and very good. You can get stuck here a while sometimes, because as I've said, service is slow, so if you have to be somewhere soon, don't come here! read more
