While he was there to provide the quote, he noticed the kitchen floor was really cold (he took off his shoes when he entered the house). He pulled out his thermal camera and we saw the floor was 30-40F! I had noticed that area of the kitchen was cold in winter, but didn't realize it was coming from the floor, where kitchen is cantilevered out past the foundation wall. He proposed insulating the cantilevered area with spray foam, and then said he could insulate all the rim joists in the basement for the same price. A week or so later, while he was onsite doing the insulating, I mentioned I was going to finish the basement later in the year, and expected to use 3 inch foam panels. He suggested using spray foam instead since that would give me a few inches more space in the room. He gave me a price and I said I'd think about it. As I thought about it, I realized getting a few more inches in the room, and also getting a better sealing product would be worth it, and would save me many hours of labor and a lot of material costs. In summer, I started work on the basement project, and once I had the framing up and electrical roughed in, I called (now July) to schedule the spray foam. Randy honored the price from January, scheduled the job quickly, and it looks great! Something I especially appreciate about Randy and Paragon is that the guy who quotes the job actually does the job; it's not some sales guy, it's the owner who quotes AND does the work! Because of that, any questions get answered and you know exactly who is accountable for quality and completion. I did get other quotes for the attic, and Paragon was very competitive. I really appreciated Randy's suggestions, and they did not feel like a sales pitch; it felt like I was getting good options to consider that would solve a problem I had.

Turns out there were mice living down there that we had no idea about. One even fell on a worker while they were pulling out the old stuff. Made sure to tell my wife who was on the fence originally about having this done. Big difference since then. No more mice sightings, heating bills are noticeably lower, and the house stays comfortable even when it's really cold outside. Solid work all around. This company is GREAT! After another company replaced my furnace and messed it up by miss matching…read morethe plenum size and furnace I got McHenry to do it. The other furnace was crap and only lasted a year before the blower failed (because of the pressure miss match caused by the plenum mismatch). They replaced the furnace with a good one, AND got it up off the floor like it SHOULD have been. In addition to correcting the plenum, they put a NEW and correct filter housing on it. That doesn't seem like a big thing except the prior company had some dummy install a filter housing with the screws facing IN to the slot where the filter sits making it a real pain to replace. So ya, I definitely recommend them.

In the winter, the plumber cut a pipe to my HVAC unit without knowledge that he had cut off service to this unit. I didn't give permission for this to occur either. As a result, when I realized this is what happened, I called and asked them to fix the pipe as a pro bono measure since it was a mistake. I didn't feel it was my responsibility to pay for an error they made. Although it is December and cold out, it took them two phone calls and over four hours later to call me and let me know they would charge me for the work but they'd be happy to send someone out to do it. As a small business owner, I feel this is a terrible way to treat clients. It is important for businesses to take responsibility for the actions they have caused. I clearly told the owner on the phone that I would no longer be using their services moving forward.
