We visited the Collegiate Grill on four or five occasions when visiting Gainesville. They have a variety of burgers and hotdogs, but no Chicago Dog (my favorite). The food is always good and the service is quick. The restaurant is across the street from a city parking deck where you can park for free. Jobs and careers cause us to adjust our living schedule and location. Came to the Collegiate Grill for lunch while working at NEGMC in the 80's. Then the career required moving. Any of you locals would remember our waitress who always took our order (for 6-7) of us, never wrote anything down, no pad, no pencil, all from memory. Didn't realize the place was still open. First visit to this classic spot that has been open since 1947. I arrived for lunch apx 11:30 am on a Tuesday and the place was already near capacity. I took one of two remaining seats at the counter instead of waiting for a table. Seems very popular with locals as well as the folks that are working downtown. Collegiate has a relaxed, 50s feel to it with its decor and music. I ordered two chili slaw dogs and a 1/2 order of fries, and both hit the spot! Part of the magic of the hotdogs I felt was that the buns were very fresh, buttered and slightly toasted! The toppings were wonderful. The fries are hand cut, which makes all the difference. One thing I didn't like was the barstools, even though they looked cushioned, were super hard. Time to reupholster these and get some cushion underneath them. read more

I have been coming here when in town for 40 years and I always get a burger and fries because this is the best of the best! Diner, atmosphere, great service, just a classic diner that has the best ambience great service and food that has been perfected for over 50 years. I love the fries and will often sit here generally with a client but break all my rules and eat a cheeseburger with the fries and a sweet tea and you can't get any better. This diner has history. You walk in and you can feel it. Sitting on the covered deck, I was able to listen to the sounds of the city and the musical birds in the nearby trees, with an occasional light breeze. Very comfortable. I had a chocolate shake, hand-spun, perfectly blended. A cheese burger with grilled onions, which had just the right amount of grease, and chili cheese fries, which had a ton of cheese and chili. The waitress, Rachel, was cordial and full of southern hospitality, just a pleasure to be around, had great energy. This joint has good reviews but it wasn't my jam. My family said they could grab me some grub when they visited so I can't speak on the environment. Looks like they do burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes. I ordered a cheeseburger and hotdog, very specific with my toppings. I was in the phone when the person was ordering in person so I know it was passed on correctly. However, my order wasn't quite what I asked for. Cheeseburger - missing the, mustard, mayo and slaw that was requested. The patties itself were in the thin side and didn't have flavor, which is unfortunately a miss quite often with burgers. I love a variety of toppings but the patties needs attention!! My mom said how years ago when she orders from there that the patties were bigger. Hotdog with chili, slaw mustard and raw onions. First bite, I love that they toasted the bun!! Had a buttery taste and slight crunch that stood out. Greatness! Unfortunately it was the best part. The hotdog could have been cooked longer for my liking. It also didn't taste like it was all beef. I could be wrong here. It it was all beef, it wasn't a very quality brand. Sorry, no pix. What used to be my go to place for a burger in Gainesville, was bought out recently by a neighboring restaurant. Ever since there's just something off about it. It used to feel like a 40s diner but now so much has changed it feels inauthentic. You order at the register now, which isn't so bad, but there's no waiters or waitresses anymore because the new owners fired all of them, and I mean ALL of them in favor of a different system. The cooks are also different and the food is always overcooked now. Very unfortunate, not a bad place to go, but it's nowhere near as good as it used to be. read more

Their shakes are awesome. My husband and I would try to go there but found it difficult since they are only open a couple hours a day. (Not being able to eat burgers and shakes for dinner how weird) they are only open for lunch so we stopped trying to go there. But their shakes are good. They had staffing issues for years and said they had to cut hours. They recently got new owners. The hours didn't improve and their prices increased. If you find yourself downtown during lunch hours grab a shake but it's not a regular spot for us bc of how inconvenient it is. read more

I eat there when I'm up in G-Ville. The food is great and the staff is very friendly. The only time I was disappointed was when I went there and it was closed due to staffing issues. Raised in Atlanta, I believe the best hot dogs in the south are Varsity all the way dogs. But moving to Gainesville I discovered my close second in Collegiate Grill. If you haven't tried this one yet, then do. The atmosphere is 1950's diner, complete with 1950's music. The staff are polite and friendly without being invasive. I decided to try the hamburger steak plate. And since I don't care for coleslaw, I had double fries. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The hamburger was flavorful and the home fries were great. I liked that I was able enjoy my meal and my book while still receiving great service that was in no way obtrusive. I highly recommend Collegiate Grill, and I WILL be back again. read more

You can find a hot dog any which way here, and I chose the slaw dog. I had to go southern! The slaw was good and juicy, but the quality of the hot dog left something to be desired. Since it says in their window that they were voted "Best Burger" and mentioned in USA TODAY, I would go that route next time.
