Collegiate Grill is similar to a few different burger joints that i've experienced in my life. The way the pack the fries reminds me of Five Guys The way they grill their burgers / buns reminds me of All American burger in NY What makes them unique is their 'slaw' on the burger. (unfortunately, their slaw comes premade and is made with dairy, so i did not eat it) The burgers that they have are offered in two sizes. regular and large. A regular burger is a 3oz patty, and the large is 4oz (1/4lb). Once cooked, they really didn't look much different, however the difference in price was also minimal. The burgers are cooked on an open stovetop griddle, and is separated by burgers on the left, buns on the right. The griller kept cleaning the grill every few burgers to get rid of all the excess fat that burns off, as well as all the char from the grill. The burgers cooked quickly, as they are fresh and squished (thin),, and you can see the juices pouring out from them. The buns were cooked on the grill as well, using nothing but the burger juices to give them a nice little 'toast'. (very much appreciated that, compared to dousing them in butter or oil). The man next to the griller, was the 'sous chef', as he prepared all the burgers after they were grilled / cooked. Putting on the sides (Lettuce, tomato, pickle, diced onion, mustard, ketchup, mayo, and of course, the slaw). past that, is the guy who works the fries. The fries were handcut and they had large buckets of them sitting next to the fryer. There were 2 deep fryers, and like the burger chef, the fry guy cleaned the oil out every few runs as well. I do appreciate how sanitary they were with the foods, as the chef changed his gloves numerous times (when he handled grilled cheese sandwiches), versus just flipping the burgers. I would have given them 5*, however i saw the fry guy make some cheddar fries, and the way he made them was to grab a handful of fries, then a handful of cheese, then fries again to stack on top. the container was overflowing, and he "Packed it in" on top of all the other fries. I was eating them previously (regular fries), but after seeing that, i stopped eating the fries. (cross contamination is a big no no in my book). The wait staff was very quick and helpful. We had 1 waitress help take our order, then another help serve the food. She checked on us a few times, even gave us some history on the place. She had a great big smile on her face, and having a happy server made the meal better! The decor of the restaurant felt more like a 50s/60s style diner, with a lot of great memorabilia hanging on the walls. the old metal signs that advertised $0.10 coca colas, etc. The 'diner' gave it a Nostalgic feel, and the staff made it warming and inviting. The place was pretty full, and was a 'seat yourself' type of restaurant. The parking is hard to find around that area, as it is located in the square. You may get lucky finding a spot nearby, or you can always park in the FREE downtown parking garage. read more

Collegiate Grill is similar to Five Guys, where the toppings actually override the patty. Collegiate is supposedly known for their slaw burger, which my husband ordered, and enjoyed. We all got strawberry shakes, which tasted like any fastfood shake -- good, sweet, thick. It was our waiter's first day on the job, and he was great: enthusiastic, on-the-ball. The place is clean, cheerful, and perfectly acceptable if you're driving through Gainesville and hungry for burgers. read more

A nostalgic American burger and milkshake joint that reminds me of an old soda fountain or drugstore diner. Very reasonably priced. Husband had the strawberry milkshake which he said was awesome, made with fresh strawberries and thick. I am an average sized female and got the large single burger which was enough to make me uncomfortably full. We shared an order of fries. Burgers are a little bland and could use a tad of seasoning. Staff was super friendly and overall it was an enjoyable place to grab lunch. read more

The decor menu and theme are kind of a knock off of The Varsity, but the hamburgers were absolutely delicious. Fries were great too. We came for lunch with a toddler and a 3 month old. On the square since Eisenhower was president turning out all beef burgers, top flight chili dogs and thick shakes. Awesome fries hand cut from fresh off the farm Idaho spuds. High school hotties do a great job taking care of their customers. First class chili dog on a fresh toasted bun with a mid grade wiener set deep so the meaty chili and cold Bermuda's can rise. I could eat one in three bites riding a bicycle. Chili is mild with a paprika kick and thick enough by Thursday not to tempt the adding of any more water. Decor is tiled Dutch blue and the walls are lined with local athletic history. It's spic n span clean and an institution just off the square downtown. read more

Only place in Georgia where I've had a real chili dog and genuine chili cheese fries (hand cut fries!). Their chocolate malts are absolutely delicious and I order one every time I go. Collegiate Grill. So it's a landmark in Gainesville. I can appreciate that. What I can't appreciate is paying $21 (not counting the tip) for a fast food meal. In fact - I'm still steaming about it. We could have had a good lunch at Red Lobster or Applebees for that. Anyone that knows me understands that I don't mind spending money on food - but there have to be value. I wasn't impressed at all. Maybe I'm not the only one - we were the only two people in the place. The food was ok - nothing special - I was expecting better. I can't say for sure that I won't come back - but I have a very hard time spending $10 on a hamburger, fries, and a coke. Cheeseburger Bobby's is by far the best hamburger and fries I've ever had - we can eat there for under $15 - which is still high for burgers - but at least you get something spectacular. read more

The BEST BURGER in GEORGIA! The hands-down favorite resturant of mine. I have been coming to eat here since I was a little boy and Mr. & Mrs. Brown owned the place and Mr. Brown handed out wrapped caramels to all the kids. Pastor Jeff & Donna Worley have turned this restaurant into something Mr. & Mrs. Brown would appreciate in Heaven! Great food, fries, onion, rings, and shakes! One of the cleanest and most sanitary places in the state. Saw many people wearing gloves and were always wiping, spraying, & cleaning when thy were not smiling helping people. I first came across the Collegiate Grill a few weeks ago and have been here three or four times since. That should tell you that I'm a fan! It isn't anything fancy but damn, is it good! If you want a classic, good burger with amazing fries, a stellar milkshake for dessert and quick, cheerful service then this is the place for you! Be warned though - it is greasy and definitely not suggested for daily visits or those with an upcoming cardiologist appointment. It's also messy (a sign of a good burger) so have some napkins ready and watch your clothes! It's been here since 1947 and it's easy to taste why! read more

Went to lunch here for the first time. I was very impressed. THis is a little shop tucked away just off the downtown square. The prices was very reasonable. I had a Large Cheeseburger for $5. The staff was very friendly and the food was great. Dont expect a fancy restruant. It is a small town grill that provides very good food for a good price. My only regret is that I just now found this place but am moving out of state this weekend. I missed a lot of good lunches. While I see some of the other reviews not overly positive, I personally like it. read more

The Collegiate Grill takes to back to years past, and is a local part of the Gainesville Square. It is a little pricey for burgers and fries, but everything is fresh and tasty. Great hand-scooped milkshakes. This is a genuine '50's burger joint - and I'm old enough to know. The place was packed and noisy the Friday we were there for lunch. Hardest working, most efficient waitstaff you'll ever see. Excellent service and food. Everything is served on "wrap paper". Plan to share an order of fries - too much for one. We were traveling north on the interstate. My wife had eaten there before and promised I'd like it. All local customers, plenty of young children with them. This is a real throw-back; restaurants like this are fading quickly. Menu is quite limited: burgers, fries, slaw, real hand-made milk shakes, BLTs.... and that's about it. Memorable, different, and excellent. Free muni parking lot across the street. read more

Four of us went Ziplining in Lula, just North of Gainesville yesterday. One had eaten here several times and recommended it. It is an Old time Greasy hamburger joint! Hamburgers, hot dogs and fries is the Entire Menu! So, I had to try a sm. Cheeseburger & a Chili dog. Both were good. I really liked the Burger with slaw on it. The chili on the Dog was good and reminded me a little of the Varsity. Overall it was good if you don't mind coming out smelling like a Fry cooker! If you are craving greasy burgers and hot dogs with good Slaw, then this is the place! read more

Pretty basic dinner style eatery serving predominantly burgers. Burgers were solid, cooked well, and topped with fresh ingredients. We also ordered a small fry and a shake which were both decent. Waitress was friendly and attentive. Place looks a little run down and out of date- way past its hay-day, and not in a charming throwback kind of way.
