The cabs in Ithaca aren't great overall, but Collegetown Cab is pretty okay! All three times I've used them they've been fast (though I didn't try scheduling in advance -- that doesn't seem to work with any Ithaca cab company...) The driver was OK and the rate was $8 for a trip of about a mile, which is comparable to the Uber minimum fare in SF of $6.75. (Uber doesn't expect tips, though!) Anyways, out of the cab companies in Ithaca, I'd recommend this one. read more

It's a crapshoot, no matter which of the three main cab companies in Ithaca you call. There is Ithaca Dispatch (which is every cab company except Collegetown Cab and Green Hornet - Do not use Green Hornet.) Your driver may or may not be professional and may or mat not take on other passengers. If you are a girl - always sit in the back. Ithaca dispatch at least has an actual dispatch. Collegetown Cab and Ithaca Dispatch work about the same way - you get drivers in various types of vehicles - some newer and well maintained, others not so much. Some drivers are also newer and well maintained, others not so much. Collegetown cab does usually tell you the rate up front, and can be expensive. Both companies often will pick up other cab fares while you are on your own cab fare (or someone else will be in the cab already when you get in), and charge both of you, even though you are sharing the ride - nothing is metered or regulated, as far as a price, - which is a failure of the City of Ithaca to protect its citizens - and frankly to guarantee a decent cab company operates in the city. Ridesharing causes myself to question whether I will be able to get somewhere on time and without sharing it with someone else - because of this - I do not use either cab company at all costs and pay more either for a private limo service to drive me, or for a friend to give me a ride. $20 to or from the airport - when you have to share a crappy, smoky cab with two other people is deplorable. However - I do have to use these companies occasionally - its NEVER a pleasant experience. Due to fewer smart people wanting to take cabs anytime they need them - and people not tipping - you possibly have drivers that do not like their jobs and declining sales - hence the cab-sharing policies adopted by the companies to eek out as much revenue as they can, but I'm sure it does not increase sales in the long term. I am a local. I'd like a better cab company. There's too many cabs that suck, (except at 1AM when you need one, even a sucky one, from the bars). Recently - I took a cab from Collegetown to up by the airport. The cabbies play gangster rap "nig**r this" "nig**r" that, loudly in the cab. Several other people got in for the ride. In under 15 minutes the guys had completed 3 fares at $15+ each. The cab companies should realize they are not competing with each other - in my mind - they are competing with buses, my feet, my friends car, my own car, and frankly all the cabs I have ever taken anywhere in the world. Cabs in Bangkok, Thailand are way better than those in Ithaca. $45 in 15 minutes - and we are listening to foul language. There are a few professional drivers out there, but most are not, and the companies are not checking on it - hurting their prospects at more people taking their cabs - but instead are packing people in to devalue the customer experience and fatten their own pockets. Sorry but that it no way to run a business. Cabs suck here. Cabs are a very last resort for me in Ithaca, whereas in other cities I have lived (Rockville, St pete, NYC) The drivers were professional, cabs were consistent and available, and I used them frequently - absolutely NO REASON to do that here, the bus is nicer and much cheaper and takes about the same amount of time with all the pickups on the way....Anyone who says the cabs are "so great" is f-ing crazy or living in a twilight zone. Plus you know when the bus is coming, and get on it, - half the time you call these guys and the phone is BUSY or you get voicemail. yeah voicemail - for a cab! Two bad experiences in one weekend: Came back from studying across the country to spend Cortaca with friends at IC. You would think they would make sure they had enough cabs for one of IC's biggest events? Wrong. On Saturday night I called at 1 am to request a cab as soon as possible I and was told 25-30 minutes, which wasn't a problem because I wasn't in a rush. All of a sudden its 2:30 am and no cab, no call. Ended up having to walk home. Called at about 4 am on Monday to schedule a cab for 4:30 to go from Kendall to the Ithaca airport. First, the dispatcher woman was extremely rude to me claiming that "I should have called way earlier" for the cab- since when is there enough of a demand for cabs at 4 am for 30 minutes to not be enough time? Anyways, I ended up having to cancel the cab (for a legitimate emergency) but when I called the dispatcher back to let them know, I kept getting voicemail. Eventually, the cab driver shows up. I didn't hear the call right away so the driver thought that beeping multiple times at a college apartment complex at 4:30 in the morning would be a good idea. After the beeping I checked my phone and the driver had texted me, asking if I still needed the cab. Although I was frustrated by the terrible communication I apologized and told him that I wasn't going to make it. I got a text back saying "Ok well thanks for calling me back". A friend ended up taking me to the airport about 15 minutes after I told the cab driver I wouldn't be coming. As soon as I walked outside I noticed that cab still parked in front of the apartments- when I got in my friend's car the cab pulled out in front of us. I'm not sure if I was just paranoid or not, but we ended up crossing paths with the same type of cab (green mini van) 3 or 4 times our way to the airport. Again, I'm not sure if this was a weird coincidence or if the annoyed driver was taunting me. This isn't the first time I've had problems with Collegetown Cabs, but my experience over the weekend put me over the edge. After using Uber in other cities I realized how much this company (its dispatcher and cab drivers) disrespect their passengers. I'm sure driving drunk college students isn't an ideal job on the weekends but as I've learned you can expect horrible service any day of the week. read more

I think I had the same driver. First he lit up a cigarette. I had to explain to him it was illegal to smoke. He looked startled as if no one ever told him that before but then he told me it was the first time he had ever driven to Syracuse and he didn't know the way so maybe he was really new. Then suddenly we stop. We already were running late because he had had another passenger before me but he was hungry so he went into a restaurant to get his lunch. I waited for a long time hesitant to get out because he left the keys in the car with the engine running and my bag in the trunk. Finally he comes out with his lunch half eaten and starts to drive again very fast while eating his lunch driving. He was speeding and eating because he realized how late he was. All the while he complained about how he was losing money. I just caught my flight with minutes to go. read more

I booked a cab from Mary Donlon on 2/22 at 10.25PM. However, when I reached Mary Donlon at 10.23PM, no cab was present. I called the company at 10.30PM to check where my cab was - they told me that the cab had left and they would call it again to come back. I did not receive an apology nor a time frame as to when it would return, except that it would be in a few minutes. It's currently 10.50 and almost half an hour past my original pick up time. My pre-reserved ride to the airport arrived promptly. The driver was friendly and efficient. I was very pleased. On the basis of that experience, I would have given them a 5. BUT for the return reservation, I would give a 1. I pre-reserved a ride from the airport to my home, providing them with the flight number and time of arrival in case of delay. Well, the flight was delayed and they CANCELED rather than adapting to the later time. This was EVEN THOUGH I had provided them with updated info three times by email after not being able to reach them by phone because no one answered and it did not go to voice mail. My cab driver, Brandon D., was very helpful and patient. He had a very nice attitude and his driving was smooth, especially given my condition of being injured. There was no need to even let him know. During off peak times this company is great. However a Friday or Saturday night around 10-11 it is often very difficult to get ahold of this company let alone any other cab company in Ithaca. Due to a cancelled flight out Ithaca Airport, I was rescheduled to an early morning flight July 22 and asked the receptionist at Best Western University Inn to order a cab for me at 4.15 am. I was standing next to her in the reception when she called and ordered the cab - and I asked her to call CollegeTown cabs which I remember from earlier. No taxi showed up in the early morning and when calling the taxi company, I was informed that no reservation or call had been taken from Best Western the day before. No taxi would be able to come before one hour later - too late for my plane. My problem was solved by a flexible hotel shuttle transporting pilots to the airport. In the airport I spoke to a couple in the line to security - same experience: Ordered taxi did not show up in the early morning. read more

I've never left a review before on Yelp, but felt compelled to because of how poor their service was. Took almost two hours to get a cab. Called 5 times and kept saying one was on its way. Shame on me for trusting them, but that won't happen again. I feel terrible saying this, but I can't wait until Uber/Lyft get to Ithaca and put people like this out. The drivers will make more and the service level will improve drastically. My girlfriend had an early flight out of Ithaca Tompkins Airport and I booked our 4:15 am ride the day before. In the morning we woke up with enough time to meet the driver outside. As soon as we got outside at 4:13 we received a text that our ride was cancelled. I called the dispatch and the woman on the phone was incredibly rude saying that she tried calling to tell us that we had to meet the driver earlier. When I asked what my options were she offered no solutions. Luckily I called Ithaca Dispatch (607-277-7777) and the man on the phone was very friendly and after explaining our situation he sent a driver right away. The driver was friendly and we got to the airport on time. Overall, I would not recommend college town cab at all but would strongly recommend Ithaca Dispatch. read more

Horrible! Needed a pickup early in the morning to catch a bus to NYC. Called to confirm pickup five minutes before and they told me they were running 15 minutes late. Based on that time frame, I would've missed my bus, some very important meetings on the City, and maybe lost my job. I called this service tonight to try and get a ride back to my college from the Ithaca Mall. It was after the cat stopped running back to ithaca college, meaning that my only option was to call a cab to get back. My friend that I was with and I called around six for a cab to come get us and take us back, and the woman on the phone told us it was going to be half an hour before the taxi would be there. I waited 45 minutes before calling back to ask where the taxi was, and I was told it was on its way. I waited about another ten minutes before I called another service to come get my friend and I, and they said it would be about 15 minutes. I try to call Collegetown Cab back to tell them not to send their cab, because I've called another. For some reason, it goes to voicemail. Twice. I decide to call off my friends phone, and lo and behold, they answer. I was extremely mad at this point, as it is not an hour past when I originally called, and I am now forced to sit outside because the mall is closed; so I curtly tell them that I do not need the cab to come, and that I did not appreciate being sent to voicemail twice. The assistant manager calls my friends phone back immediately, from a different line, and ATTACKS me. She is basically yelling and me and giving me every lame excuse she can as to why I have been waiting AN HOUR for a cab and why my phone call went to voicemail TWICE. She was rude to me the entire call, and I did not appreciate it. I call back home to tell my mom about the experience, and because she is a loving and caring mother who is concerned for me, she calls them to complain. My mother gets hung up on TWELVE TIMES. The assistant manager- who was apparently the only one to talk to tonight- was rude to my mother, and flat out said: "I don't have to answer to this." I will never be using this service again in my next four years here at Ithaca. And to the assistant manager, I hope your boss sees this review. Use Cayuga Cabs instead. I called and they were there in under 15 minutes. read more

Had an amazing cab driver - Rick - who really helped me out in an emergency. I had to take a drug test for employment and it was very last minute, so I was so desperate and I almost failed my test which would've lost my offer. Despite everything, he had an amazing attitude, got me there well in time, and was a great sport about it all. He really saved me. Phenomenal service and was there when I needed it. I have used Collegetown Cab a number of times to get to the airport from my home. They are always prompt and the drivers are very friendly and pleasant. Today after my pick up I was surprised to learn that the taxi was going to pick up another party on the way to the airport. When I order a cab, I do not expect a shared ride service. If that is what I desire I will order. To add insult to injury the taxi driver charged both of us the full taxi fare and there was no offset for taking a shared ride. If this company wants to maintain viability when Uber / Lyft comes to town later this year, they need to stop these practices. read more

This is the worst taxi service on this planet. I've had better taxi services in third world countries. Called them to pick me up on a rather busy day at Cornell. The taxi came a few minutes late but thats ok, I knew there were tonnes of people on campus and its perfectly alright to be a lil late. I had 4 huge bags and the driver didnt help me load any of the bags AT ALL. He saw a lean girl struggling with her luggage, chose to ignore it and kept talking on the phone about his next pick up assignments. I thought thats ok too, maybe he was just tired from driving all day. No complaints as such here. I got on the cab and he started driving. We got to an intersection and all of a sudden he starts shouting out cuss words to all other drivers on the road. And when I say cuss words, I mean the heavy motherfu**er, sisterfu**er kinds. He also threatened to kill another driver, while explaining how he would stick things up his a**. I said ok, I understand, he's frustrated. I did not react at all. All this while he kept talking to ppl on the phone and several times we came very close to hitting other vehicles on the road because his mind was not on the road AT ALL. I asked him to stop outside the apartment that I was supposed to go to for a minute so i could run inside and get a loading dock pass. He refused. I pleaded and he agreed to stop for exactly one minute. I made it on time and we proceeded to the loading dock. I flashed the pass on the post but the gates didnt open. He came out of the taxi after literally 15 seconds, said "he cant do this today" and basically pushed my stuff outside the taxi, saying I owe him $13. Oh btw this place was 0.5 miles away from where I got on. The rest of the money was charged for making him wait, for making him load (that he didnt even do) and unload. I had no choice but to pay him coz at that point I actually felt threatened and had a feeling he would punch me if I got into an argument with him. After that I had to drag 4 suitcases through the loading dock to get to the nearest elevator. I normally dont write reviews but I feel it is important for the world to know how terrible this taxi service is and I request you to never ever use it. read more

Positives- Pleasant and courteous drivers when the show up. Negatives- Cannot reach for several hours during busy periods 9has happened several times). I had a trip to the airport this past weekend. Could not reach them although I confirmed earlier in the day that they would be on time. Since the did not show you 30 minutes later I called another cab company. If I had missed my flight I would have lost my non-refundable airfare, non-refundable hotel stay and missed an important interview that could not be rescheduled. I would have been out at least $700/ plus a very important interview. I wrote to the owner. Several hours later he apologized and offered to make it up with a free ride. A few of my girlfriends and I have gone to lunch twice in the last month. We chose Collegetown Cab for transportation. We absolutely LOVED our drivers, each time!!! However, the man who answered the phone was rude and obnoxious. It would be a good idea for him to take an anger management class. The entire ride, he was yelling at the drivers over the radio. His language was just horrid! He was yelling obscenities over the radio! He was calling the drivers idiots and morons. I could not believe my ears! I felt so bad for my driver. If he had pulled over and said left us on the side of the road to quit his job that instant, I wouldn't have blamed him. I wanted to quit his job for him! That man in the office up there is just awful! Unfortunately, my friends and I will be seeking other means of transportation for awhile. That man needs to get his issues worked out. Talk about petty. I thought I'd try college town cab again to give it a second chance but for the three times I've called the dispatch center I've been forwarded to the machine. Unless got some reason i get disconnected after 2 or 3 rings I think they know it's someone that isn't afraid to complain. I think I'll stick to ASAP for my future endeavors. read more

I have always been a loyal user of this cab company and do my best to be a good customer. However last night (2/10) at around 12:30am, I was talked to so rudely on the phone by whoever was on duty that I will never use this company again and will be sure to pass my opinion on to my friends and my sorority sisters. I was talked to like I was an irresponsible child for the fact that my number was supposedly called even though I never had a missed call. When I recommended that we double check the number I was hung up on. I ended up calling an entirely other cab which arrived when they said they would and weren't rude one bit. When I called ctown cab back I was told it was my fault and hung up on again in the middle of me trying to apologize and saying it must've been a miscommunication. I will never use this company again for the way I was treated. I did everything in my power to accommodate the rudeness of the woman on the phone but to be hung up on twice in my mind is completely unacceptable. I will not be using this company again and I will do my best to deter those I know to do the same. read more

This cab service was not good. The guy was on time but he drove far to fast and almost crashed, picked up another passenger without telling me and then charged me for that distance. The cab smelled like cigarette smoke and he used his phone the whole time. Use another service. read more

Getting good cab service in Ithaca is pretty rare. These guys aren't always on top of their game, but I've had more luck with them than other ones in this area. Just schedule early and keep calling them when their lines are busy. read more
