Long story short: JUST MOVED FROM BROOKLYN TO BOSTON, WITH THE HELP OF COLLEGE EDUCATED MOVERS, AND WE LOVE THEM.
Short story long:
Whenever we've moved, my boyfriend has always managed to get help via his friends and his father, so we've never hired movers before. This time, however, we were too far away from family & friends, and there was just no way that I was going to help my boyfriend move our enormous tv.
Since we're used to doing all the labor ourselves in the past, we weren't sure what to expect from a moving service. After doing research on many of the moving services in the area, and taking into account the plausible complaints-dings on dressers, etc.-we decided to pack our own belongings.E.G., there were a lot of complaints about damage to wood dressers on many of the reviews for moving businesses, so my boyfriend bought special tape to wrap our wood dressers in, in order to prevent them from getting inadvertently dinged.
I think these are basic precautions everyone should take with smaller mom & pop companies that don't offer full service luxuries, such as furniture blankets, tape, etc. If you don't want your big furniture scuffed, protect it!
Okay, so, we packed our stuff, and protected our big furniture, and were ready and waiting for the movers to arrive on Monday morning at 8am. They got stuck in traffic, so were a wee bit late, but we didn't care about the extra 30 minutes. Once they arrived, all we had to do was sit back and relax while we watched the 2 strapping young lads (Pete & Mike) easily haul all our stuff out to their van. I was worried they'd find our biga$$ tv too hard to handle, but Mike assured me they wouldn't need any extra help, or a dolly & a ramp, even; Pete & Mike got that gorilla of a tv out of the apartment and into their van smoothly and professionally.
Let me tell you, just bedside manner alone, Pete & Mike were great. They were unflappable, no matter what. My bf & I, being the movees, fretted an awful lot. We didn't think their van was big enough; it looked way too tiny for a 1000 sq. ft. apt worth of stuff. We started thinking of things we could throw away, or come back for on a second trip; we thought we'd go rent a secondary truck; but there was no need for any of this alternative planning. Pete & Mike knew the spatial relations of their van well enough to tell us they could get everything in there. And they did!
Also, we felt bad, because we came in over our estimates. I had estimated correctly, that we'd have 30 boxes worth of stuff, plus furniture, but then there were a bunch of odds & ends and doo-dads that came in over the estimate. We gritted our teeth and sweated a bit when we were told we had more than we estimated ... how much more was this going to cost us?! We were afraid we'd be bled dry, but, as it turned out, Pete & Mike said it would be about $60 more. That was more than fair.
Did I mention this was not a local move? This was not a local move. We moved from Brooklyn to Boston; we weren't even sure if this moving company moved people outside of NYC. Well, they do, and we are very relieved for that.
Poor Pete & Mike! They sustained a flat tire about an hour away from our destination. They were good enough to call me and tell me about their issue, & how long it would delay them.I think we were at our house about 1 or 2 hours before they were, but, given their situation,we were relieved it didn't take longer for them to arrive. They were lucky enough to find a place that would fix their flat within 45 minutes,so none of this really impacted our timeframe at all.Really, all it meant was that we had a little more time to get a midday meal, and some coffee for us and for Pete & Mike once they arrived.
Once Pete & Mike arrived, everything was under control! All I had to do was open the front door for them. I fell into a chat with one of my new neighbors, who wanted to feel out who the newbies in the 'hood were going to be, and Pete & Mike just carted stuff from the van into the house without having to be directed much about anything.
I was worried that their flat tire might have hurt some of our stuff, but that was not the case. All the glassware & plateware survived the trip. We do have one floor lamp, and it appears that the material to weight it down on the bottom broke to bits, but Pete & Mike told me that's common with floor lamps. It didn't hurt the look of the floor lamp, and, in fact, it might make the blasted thing stand straighter, but since this appears to be an epidemic with the darned things, you might want to take precautions with yours, and wrap the bottom of it in bubble wrap.
Bottom line:all our stuff made it here in great condition, and Pete & Mike were so easygoing and good to work with. My boyfriend even said he'd like to get movers every time we move, and I can't think of any higher recommendation than that.He wouldn't be saying that if the move had been a disappointment in any way. Kudos, College Educated Movers, kudos. read more
